no word on an updated BIOS?

EDIT: @Mr. Fox, what's the max RAM speed I can use? Can I go faster than 2400MHz?

Honestly, you should have just bought a 1070 from @woodzstack over the 980DT since it provides better performance than the 980DT on a lower power budget.

there were some games that struggled with the 980 but were a breeze with the 1070.

Now it`s Prema modded completely, thanks again!

1070 is a no go for me until it`s properly unlocked (vBios) to its true 200W potential, right now it`s an gimped card (by put or take ~30%).
Plus I got a good offer with "T" shaped heatsink, which I will need for unlocked 1070 anyway.
Plus I need G-Sync, can`t play anything without it, after my first game play at P870DM-G - it`s soooo good.

I still haven't found any cheap 4K screens for the laptop and whether or not it'll work with my 1070.

Getting a cheep 4k screen seems odd to me when a good 1080p panel gives a better experience IMO.

Hi, I'm just wondering if anyone has ever gotten this to run OSX with the 980m doing the graphics acceleration? I just keep getting black screens trying to use it. Also i don't have Prema BIOS on it so that could be related to that, or is the optimus not disabled in it? I can't seem to find much info beyond that concerning this laptop.

Optimus, quicksync, anything related to the iGPU is disabled and there is nothing you can do about it - while still physically there in the CPU its not connected on a hardware level

That's a good thing for me. In theory I should be able to use the dedicated card for graphics acceleration if there is no optimus present I believe.

Does OSX support optimus? But regardless you need to find the right driver combo most likely as if you have everything else working there are nvidia drivers that should work.

OSX does not support optimus. when optimus is present you are forced to disable the discrete graphics card and patch the intel graphics to work. It cant switch between the cards.

I have actually got the 980m being seen now and outputting signal to internal and external monitors now so you are correct the web drivers do support the 980m, Sierra is just a PITA. I still have a weird issue with the screen rolling, I guess you could call it that in a way. It looks like you are on mushrooms till you put the thing to sleep and wake it back up.(every boot makes me feel like I'm living in the 60's). I think it might be a sync issue but haven't figured it out yet. The display isn't detected as g-sync which is probably due to the nature of laptop g-sync lacking the module. I'm curious what would happen if i disable g-sync at a bios level. Which I think you can do with prema bios? I don't have them on this system and I guess I never will as it seems they will never see a public release. I cant blame him really if someone stole my work I would be pissed too.

On a side note what realtek audio chipset is used in the system? I have no audio right now and would like to see if i can get that patched and working. cant seem to find out what the hardware is though. if any one has any experience with this

Anyone know how to fix the keyboard color not being set properly? On login, I have to manually launch the FlexiKey program to get the color to change. On reboot, it resets the color and I have to launch the program to go to the present.

Nono it is set to auto start. Let me reiterate.

Launch utility - color changes to white.
Restart - color sticks cause it's not a shutdown.
Login - color is still white but shortly turns blue/green once it autostarts. Have to launch it manually to get white again.

I don't see any major issues with the creators update.

Also, a 4K screen + cable = $181 AUD on aliexpress.com...tempted to do that upgrade now.

Try and make sure they send you A grade, no dead pixels etc. Established Chinese ebay and aliexpress stores seem pretty scared of negative feedback so I've found they're pretty honest when you ask them direct questions beforehand e.g. "what is the exact make and model of the panel you will send me"

For desktop real estate, production, editing etc, the 4k is unreal. For games, mixed bag. The B173ZAN panel is a slower transition panel with great image quality. Games with great graphics look awesome, I remember staring for about 5 minutes at the view of the mountains in Far Cry 4 from nutso bad guy's villa. However, i don't think a 1070 even max oc will cut it. By avoiding SLI it'll be better than my 980Ms, which struggled with frame pacing more than raw fps, I think the 120hz 1440p panel, if the banding is fixed by the new versions, would be a better choice for games especially if you play more fast paced ones.

I spent far too much of the day editing videos on the P170EM, [email protected]. I miss my 6700K. Move the time slider, wait a few seconds for preview to complete... With the 6700K it was basically able to do it in real time I could work so much faster.

Cool, will send a message to the seller of the panel. I also hope that aliexpress will take my visa debit card. Last time i tried doing so it failed miserably.

It'll be the last major upgrade that I'll be doing for this laptop. The real reason for replacing holding out was the price as I don't have the need to pay over $600 for the parts.

The price was reasonable so why not. Will see if it works with the 1070.

The 4K panel is the best quality wise compared to the others. If you like picture quality over 15 more hz then you'll love it.

Probably only the OLED on the AW13 is comparable.

Pretty much. At work people literally find it better than most of the Mac book displays that we normally use for previews.
Obviously it doesn't beat out professional 4k monitors , but it's the best display out there if picture quality is the main necessity.

I'm fine with or without gsync since the 1070 + mobo = no gsync.

Anyway, parts are ordered so will see about going about doing the upgrade and I'll definitely need more thermal paste.

I am running the 4k AUO on both my systems now. Have a Alienware 17 R4 coming in tomorrow, and subsequently i ordered the new 120Hz QHD panel , the one without the stupid pixel banding issue. Lets see when that comes in.

Can you use your debit as a credit card? Its a better idea generally (credit is easier to dispute/chargeback, you may get points on an awards scheme, and other things irrelevant here e.g. free travel insurance etc)

Full instructions are in a thread by the guy I bought mine off, google techinferno 4K upgrade P870dm you should find it easy

Mobo is back in my hands. Sending it off to metabox next week. Stupidest longest saga eveerrrrrrrr

I used my AU visa debit card and it worked, I got charged for the items. I don't know why it didn't work back in 2015 when i tried to buy something off them with my canadian visa debit card.

Time to order some more thermal paste.

EDIT: looks like the panel has already shipped...hopes the EDP cable does too.

I wonder what I can do with the 2 x 4-pin gpu power plugs? other than my original idea of LED strip lights.

is there enough of a gap to stick a fan on top of the heatsink?

That's 5V from USB powering the fans, not from the 19.5V 4-pins. You'd need a step down (buck) converter to do pretty much anything with them.

Its an easier setup to do, finding wired connectors for the ports is headache enough.

The plugs can be had here:

    https://www.moddiy.com/products/4%2dPin-Mini-GPU-Connector-Extension-Cable-(40cm).html

It's just a matter of finding which pins do what and from there it's just power conversion from 19v to 12v.

No need for max converting aka down to 12V for fans (more heat the lower you convert the voltage). Quality fans can run from 12 up to around 15V. Aka less heat when the voltage is converted down to 15v and not the lower 12V

It physically fits with a case mod, and should work if wired correctly (look up the DM service manual for schematics of J_DC1 and J_DC2) and then of the DM3 to replicate it

Its price is stupid though. Thats more than what I bought my 2x 1070s for including two lots of international shipping as separate <$1000 packages to dodge the 10% GST which would apply on import to Australia - which would be added to that price and its shipping as well!

Have to cut a rectangle part out of the frame because the card is longer than 3.0b MXM.

Whether your big double rad heatsink fits depends on how much was changed (if anything) between your 980DT and the Clevo 10x0 cards.

I am assuming that it's because of the heat pipes. Gosh dang it! I probably would have gone this route if it was already figured out.

I also bet that the alignment is not great either.

    Thank you!

I got really confused by the large number of diferent SSDs you guys use around.

I should avoid anything that has NVME in its name though? This one isn't NVME, no?

I'm asking because I want to make it OS SSD and such...
