Thats too bad and I think you will regret pretty soon.
I sort of just did, I replaced a p775dm3 with a p750 to get a smaller more portable machine.
Now 2-3 months later I have gotten a p870 and getting rid of the p750
-
I'm not buying right away, I'm gonna give myself a few months to think it over.
Plus the upgrade process is so tedious that it isn't worth it in the long run. -
Do you still have warranty on it? Try and sell it with a month or two left if possible.
If you do decide to sell, chuck the 980dt back in it, sell the 1070 separately it'll still fetch a good price. Otherwise I think you will really struggle to find a buyer for 980dt card only. -
the only problem is heat sink is modded. it cost too much to get a replacement. I was contemplating adding the 980DT as a spare card but not installed.Last edited: Aug 13, 2017

Yes! Aliexpress resolved in my favor and I should be getting my money back soon.

What happens if it is the panel? Would be interesting to see if there is a tracking number on it. -
Sorry, it wasn't. Just a pair of fidget spinners.

Good news: I managed to find a potential buyer for my 980DT.
-
Got my new P870DM-G laptop assembled yesterday, bought a new barebone from Ebay.
Specs
i7-6700 (got it for a good price)
2*8gb 2133 so-dimm
Samsung 960 pro 512gb m.2
MSI mxm gtx 1060 6gb , bought from taobao
Installing this msi mxm 1060 wasn't completely plug'n'play, had mod the main heatsink, there were 2 components in the the way. Used my trusty Dremel again to make room for the components.
http://www.kolumbus.fi/Saltsi/kuva/004_sink.jpg here can be seen a little.
http://www.kolumbus.fi/Saltsi/kuva/006_sink.jpg Here's the whole gpu assembled, on the right side you can see the mod that was required.
Got a Firestrike score of 10160, graphics score 11862. Temps for the gpu are around 70 degrees when playing.
Had to modify the Nvidia drivers also to get it installed, everything is working except G-Sync (knew it wont work with Default Clevo bios).
Was this the first 1060 install in p870dm-g ?dzpliu, bloodhawk, bennyg and 1 other person like this. -
@j95's drivers worked for me. Also do a TDP mod and you'll get better bench scores.

That should run nice and cool with that kind of cooling

My 980DT should be sold in the next few days

They can be a little tricky to shift as they are fairly niche now. -
Hey people! anyone know links on standard original LATEST bios for my clevo 870DMG 980m cards? im firmwared Prema bios, but it sux, anytimes with Bsods, but i cant find newest version, only old by 2014 age. Can you help me? Site Prema right now private,i cant download original from his site.
-
Can't give you warranty that the vBIOS versions is correct and work for your machine. Take a look here https://www.techpowerup.com/vgabios...vo&model=&interface=&memType=&memSize=&since= or ask your reseller.

Always take a backup of the original bios before flashing, especially custom firmware.

Sold and shipped to new owner. Not as much as I want but yeah, no one is gonna pay a lot for it when it only works on limited hardware configs.
Now, onto selling my P870DM-G sans RAM and SSDs.Last edited: Aug 27, 2017 -
I am having somekind of heat issue with the 980m in my p870.
In some demanding games and benchmarkes the screen shuts off, then the gpu fan ramps up to full tilt for a minute or so before computer restarts.
I use auto fans, on full fans it doesn't happen or it takes longer before it happens.
I have seen it do this from 84c and the highest I've seen is 92c.
So I don't think that the gpu coretemp is the problem.
Any theories?
Are there any way to check other components temps? Like vrm's
What temperatures is other people seeing on their 980m in p870dm? -
No software can measure temp for other than the gpu core. Open up and take a look on the thermal pads and see if they sitting correctly and is ok. I would start with replacing the pads with new if they are damaged and put on new quality thermal paste.estens likes this.
-
Also check contact is nice and flat when you put the heatsink down on the card while out of the laptop
My 980M heatsinks were horribly misaligned, bad core contact, thermal pads too thick up the vrm section once the core was fixed. Odd black screen with fans blasting. Took a few goes to get it right, but once that was all done, with liquid metal I was getting mid 70s at >1350mhz core OC on both 980Ms on full fans -
Thats too bad.
I'll try open her up and see if the pads are making good contact.
Are there anything on the backside of the 980m that needs pads aswell? I can't remember..
I'll do that
Wow, that sounds good
Full fans I get mid 80 at 1200mhz -
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
Nothing is required on the back of the card.
-
What's your opinion on backplates for memory chips on the back? Unnecessary?
-
Reseated, repasted and checked the pads last night.
Small improvement but still issues. Looks like all area has good pad coverage, but I think the gap between core and heatsink is large as it needs alot of paste.
Sometime in the future I am going to upgrade to a 1070 and for that I guess I need the 200w heatsink.
How does that heatsink fit the 980m? -
If you buy the MSI 1070 then you can still use the 980M heatsink or you can get the 980DT heatsink and do a bit of modding to get it to fit nicely. I've done the mod myself and it works great.

Is it posible to get the 1070 from 870dm2/3 working in these machines?

This has already been discussed and the answer to no.

If you are feeling brave I suppose
-
Brave? You mean like that nutcase who bought $1250usd of seconds MXM GPUs from the other side of the world via ebay and shoehorned them into a 5 year old laptop with no functional display?
-
Pass! Current laptop works fine so can't complain... Other than it not being coffelake.

No current machine is I suppose, but most people wont notice 4 vs any other higher core count.

I'll post this here too, since its P870DM related:
Installed the AUO B173QTN01.4 panel on my P870DM-G. Original LP173WF4-SPF1 was not up to par, only 60hz for me, only 63hz by overclocking max.
Stock clevo bios
Stock MSI gtx 1060 vbios non g-sync
Ran against the same EDID issues as everyone else, screen lighting up only without Nvidia drivers installed, or safe mode. Tested Linux, Linux is working fine without any issues.
Workaround: Made an edid override INF file with moninfo. After first Nvidia driver install, switched laptop screen to use that moninfo made driver. Disabled internal monitor after that. Found out when i had an external monitor attached via hdmi during driver install, in "duplicate screen" mode. The screen lit up after driver install. After that i got a picture, switched to extended screen mode, changed resolution to 2560*1440 120hz. Took hdmi off, still got an image!
So using duplicate screen mode with external monitor via hdmi during driver install causes the internal screen to light up.
Found out also that i have to keep Windows Test Mode on and keep the internal laptop display disabled in device manager. If monitor is not disabled, it will stay black in the next reboot. Same without test mode.
After that its fully working except brightness control. Can shut down the laptop, reboot or what ever, its working as normal. Can dim the display using nvidia control panel.
So if you already purchased this display, its possible to use it like this. Hardly an ideal situation, maybe there will be some kind of fix later. Full 2560*1440 120hz working great, really good quality panel
Edit: Seems to be working without test mode also.
Edit: display gets no signal after screensaver or sleep mode. Reboot fixes itLast edited: Oct 1, 2017poprostujakub, ameatball, bennyg and 1 other person like this. -

Hello All,
Just ordered a barebones P870DM-G, just been reading through all these forums and been reading some pretty interesting stuff from you all so thanks for that!
I plan on going for a fairly standard build to start off with, with an i7 6700k 4Ghz CPU, Corsair Vengeance LPX 16 GB RAM (just one to start with) and hard drive wise I was thinking of Samsung 250GB EVO PCI Express SSD and a Seagate 2TB 2.5 inch SATA3. I am still undecided on GPU, I think at this point I will go with the 980M. It will be a huge upgrade from what I have at the moment (HP Envy M7 with a 940M) and then I can build up and upgrade from there.
Why have I gone for this laptop? Well, I wanted something powerful but is still portable, my portability may be a bit different from yours as I work on a boat so I want to have something with the power of a desktop that can sit with 2 monitors on a desk at home but then I can pick up, take to the boat with me and then play on board but store it away easily when needed. I also wanted something which was future proofed, I hate the fact that my current laptop is almost a throwaway item (luckily I still have a use for it as a CAD laptop for 3d printing) and wanted something that is expandable and can be upgraded easily.
I am a complete luddite compared to some of you guys and this will be my first self built PC, something I have always wanted to do. I know my way around computers but I still have a lot to learn. Hopefully I can contribute a bit with what I learn and find out on my journey.
My cabin mate has the shenker U727 version and it just runs and looks incredible.Last edited: Oct 1, 2017Papusan likes this. -

Interesting you can still get a barebones. Take pics and share how you get on
-
This is what I have bought, http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Clevo-P87...e=STRK:MEBIDX:IT&_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649 , I have just ordered the 980m off Aliexpress,, I'm hoping I don't get the same result as what Ghosts did with his 4K screen! I have a spare SSD and HDD knocking around the house so I may just fit them in.
The ebay advert says used but it looks to be very little use to me and still comes with the original accessories box, I'm guessing from the what the seller has said, it's a project that never started and I'm guessing he used the GPU elsewhere, I have bought the spacer for the 980m off him separately too.
Looking forward to getting it all together and I reckon I'll save nearly 300-400 off buying a similarly specced laptop off the shelf. -
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
For that price, it's not too bad, especially as a project you can enjoy.
-
Yeah, hopefully. I'm no IT specialist but after spending time playing with Raspberry Pis, 3d printers and the PCs and network I look after at work, I'm looking forward to having something like this which will last me for a few years of gaming and beyond with upgrades etc,Papusan likes this.

I bought a P870dm-g.
All the pieces are here. But the gtx980m came without the x-bracket.
Everything installed (except the gpu). I thought the notebook would start and use the video card that is integrated in the 6700k. But I was wrong and I saw that it does not start.
I bought a x-bracket on ebay, but it will take 15-20 days to arrive (from china).
I searched the clevo in portugal but I had no answer yet if they will sell me only the x-bracket.
When you buy a gpu, have sure is a x-bracket inside.
LOL -
@Papusan @Mr. Fox And everybodty else
I bought my paste, but am confronted with a dire situation.
I have a screw stuck! Cannot unscrew it from the GPU! What do you do in this situation? I tried applying more force, I tried heating up the PC and unscrewing right after. Left with no ideas for the moment. As far as I know, things like WD40 are not safe for circuits, and I cannot apply more force, but the screw is pretty much stuck in place at the moment.
