My p870dm-g is getting on the older side these days. It has turned into more of a desktop...so I figured I would up the cooling and overclock it some :D. Thought you guys might appreciate this hehe

Why not just get a desktop at that point?... I've seen it all with laptops now lmao. Like I can't even imagine myself buying a laptop over 1k just to set it up and spend more money on a screen, keyboard, etc when it already has that attached on it....

From what I understand it is an existing laptop and together with the killer deal on the external 2070 the OP decided to keep it for a while,

As for not using the screen I think that is very common as many members use external screens when they use their laptops at home - it also would allow to place the laptop in a way that provides additional cooling like for example with very powerful yet relatively quiet external fans.

Why not just buy a Clevo MXM GTX1080 used on eBay? Or a Clevo RTX2070? Then they would run inside your laptop and both options would be faster than the graphics box RTX2070.

I have seen used Clevo GTX1080’s on eBay go for $400. And inside of your chassis with a Vapor chamber you can run over 2Ghz with incredible performance.

I run a GTX1080, and at 1080P it still hammers everything I throw at it. It pushes a steady 1,898-1,911Mhz on the GPU and the GDDR5X runs 11,384 effective.

Learn the history. Vapor chamber don't fit in the DM (wrong shape). And you'll need mod the heatsink + change the pipes routing and make the MXM slot electrically compatible with 1080. Not a easy fix as you think it will be. Doable, yeah. But for everybody? I'm not so sure.

Adding a better MXM GPU would run me 700-800, external gpu can be used with future laptops as well for a reasonable price. The i7-6700k still holds up well for gaming/encoding/editing I mostly do. I suppose I could have built a desktop but again it would cost closer to 800 to function better and nowadays a much more portable laptop just as powerful can be had closer to 900/1000. Also the fans are just 8 small holes in the back of the case. When I picked it up around 2015 I was doing a lot of editing on site. Sadly I missed the 10 series GPUs by like 4/5 months ‍♂️. Also I just got married so no money haha.

I totally understand, I was thinking your machine was compatible with newer MXM modules. You got a great deal on that external GPU anyways. The Aorus external GPU’s boxes are nice and this was a pretty good option to get more power out of this older machine.

Yeah I got them for a desktop build like 7 or 8 years ago and have been looking for something to do with them. They eat electricity and don't work with a lot of fan controllers, also had to drill some new holes in them to get the grills to fit. At full tilt it feels like they are hovering if you hold them xD.

I used maglev 120mm fans in my temperature controller notebook stand. They have a good balance of noise and pressure.

You do want to optimise for pressure rather than flow so it can get in the casing.

Hi. May be I bad searching but not can find info and not know that do.
I bought P870DM-G barebone with DSANKE BIOS without anything add components (no CPU, Memory, GPU, HDD).
I installed G3900 (for test, also was try i5-7400 from corporative desktop), 4x8Gb DDR4-3000 G.Skill, 2x250Gb NVMe SSD and GPU GTX 970M 6Gb from my old MSI Laptop GT780DX with MSI vBIOS.
After press power button start lightning of led in button but I see black screen. Why? Because GPU not have Clevo vBIOS or I need searching another reason?
    Thanks

Come in for a bit of a moan really but...

Eurocom are really annoying me at the moment, paid 750 GBP/975 CAD for a 1070 to fit my DMG in October. Bit of a delay on me getting it as I had it sent to my friend as I'm working away, at sea, so he brought it out for me. I get it on board, rip out my 980m, go to fit the 1070 aaannnnddddd it's the wrong card.I had to use the supplied paste and pads to refit my 980m. Emailed Eurocom and get a reply apologizing and saying to send it back. I sent it back to Eurocom, at my cost, of nearly £70. I then have to prompt them to let me know what's going on. They reply, nearly 2 weeks later saying they can't source a new card, do i want a 980 desktop, another 980m to sli or an AMD card for 3d design.
I've declined these options for a refund while I decide on whether I upgrade the chassis and start looking down the 20 series card route. 2 weeks later I have to ask them again. Not wanting to fall out in case I decide to buy the upgrades from them. It's now been over a month since I asked for the refund and 2 months since the card was received by Eurocom back from me.. emailed AGAIN, reply was a fob of "sorry I passed it to the woman in the office" over a week ago and nothing again ever since, despite saying that I'm now going to pass it to my credit card company to reclaim.

The pity is, I want to support small niche companies, not send my money to China. I bought my first GPU from china for this laptop and there was a problem with it, i got fantastic customer service, a card sent straight out when they were happy it was faulty and constant clear communication from them. When the same card is half price from China, you really should be working hard to ensure customers are happy!

    Rant over. :)

That may be but I'm usually happy to pay an extra on top to a reputable company to send me the correct part and deal with me if it's gone wrong. :(I know you guys (Clevo resellers and gaming specialists) have a lot of experience and I'm happy to pay for that. It's just a real shame that companies still to this day, don't understand basic customer care.

    Hi.

Anyone know the latest driver for this model's Control Center/Hotkey app?

I'm having an issue with the Fn button not working to let me adjust various settings via the keyboard hotkeys.(Fn + Screen Brightness, Fn + Volume, etc...)

All I can find from Clevo is a 12/2016 driver "Control center AP (5.0001.1.01) for Windows 10 64-bit."

    Thanks.

The Sager site has an older driver: Control Center Utility for Windows 10 64 BIT 5.0000.0.32 16-Nov-15

I guess Clevo never updated it beyond v. 5.0001.1.01

They do have extra output options on the quadro cards and the bios structure can be different too. What happens with a driver installed?

I have a p870dm-g with a single 980m in it with 16 gigs of ram but no cpu at the moment. I'm thinking about selling the system. It is is working just fine but I had to use the CPU in my DM3 after that chip died. I can't find any for sale and I am curious what a fair price would be on the system with its power block and everything except the CPU. thanks for any input that can be provided.

What reseller version is it? Panel type? Condition? Memory type? Age?

Post in the price check category here:

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/forums/price-check-forum.1062/

As for a sale, a fine seller is currently sitting on a P870DM-G with a full blown 980 (not 980m) AND a 6700k CPU for $700.00 in the for sale forum and it hasn't moved for a month?

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/threads/fs-clevo-p870-dm-g-gtx-980.832131/

As for value, I sold a barebones last year w/ 4k display for ~450.00 but the market has shifted with the new Clevo's announced and coming out and the fact the Z170 is ~5 years old now. The current economic downturn isn't helping either.

There's a dual 970m w/ 6700k 16GB and SSD system sitting on eBay for $950.00. It's been there for quite some time now:

    https://www.ebay.com/itm/PCSpeciali...488563?hash=item36606558b3:g:nqQAAOSwXjtebxUh

The P870 line is EOL and really for someone looking for top dog performance, they are going to track down a Vapor chamber compatible chassis to use 1080 and 2000 series cards along with proper cooling to support 9th gen CPUs.

I Dsanke'd my P870DM and it was running a SL 8086k most proper and it is great up to 8th gen, but 9th gen was a thermal mess. I picked up a HIDevolution TM1 and parted ways with the 870DM but up to that point it was awesome.

On the plus side, you are running a normal 980m MXM which has a decent reseller value ~$200-250.00

    You could part it out:

    Barebones ~$300
    GPU: ~ $200-250
Mem: ~$35-70 (depending on make, model and speed)

If I could find a barebones p870 for that price I'd be all over it.
Maybe when people upgrade to ryzen gear there will be more of these around.

Maybe you should talk to @soulvengeance

He has one for sale in the forums for $700 with a 6700k and a full 980. You could part it out and get the barebones down to your "all over it" range quite nicely. :)

Have you checked your startup list to ensure it is not disabled?

Yes, I have a lot of Quadro P4000, M4000M, M3000M, K4100M, Tesla M6 cards and I can get BIOS from there

So I just bought a used "barebones" P870DM-G (Origin EON17-SLX version).

Laptop comes with the 980mx card, but no CPU, RAM or drives. (Does have all of the other parts though). However, I have a spare MICRON 8GB 1Rx8 DDR4 SODIMM, a SSD and I pulled an I5-6500 from an old PC that I can put into it to test it when it arrives (Which is obviously not the optimal configuration but should get it running enough for me to check it over)

I've also downloaded the service manual and pulled the drivers for it off of the Clevo site.

While I am waiting on it to get here, I've got a few questions...

~ Any oddities or quirks that I should be on the lookout for with this particular model when getting it up and running?

~ I am guessing that the 980mx GPU heatsink that is already in it would need to be swapped out if I upgrade to a 1070m?

I know that the "official" CPU list is:

    I5-6400
    I5-6500
    I5-6600k
    I7-6700k

~ I am assuming that those are the only CPU options available without a modded Bios.. Correct?

~ Assuming that I pick up a 6700k for it, what RAM would be optimal?

    Thanks....
