    Hey,

Just been reading through the thread.
Got the p870dm a couple of weeks ago.

I appreciate it is an enthusiasts machine but I got it for the raw power for portable gaming, and I wouldn't have a clue about how to tinker with it.

Got the 4k, 6700k, 32gb ram, 256gb 950, 980m sli with single adapter from CEG

Any recommendations for what to do with it to get the best out of it given my experience? (dont want to open her up, as I said no experience oc)

Primarily play bf4 but also rs siege and a few others

    Thanks
(ps, spent all night reading and now hitting the sack so please don't take offence)

The machine is great no doubt about it, but I wouldn't get one for benching purposes. More of trying to figure out how to make it work better. Like what you are doing now. :)

    Thanks.

    Mythological

    Rjtech
2161.00 +409.97(cpu+Memory) to match same config above.
Non Reseller prices. Retail only. Reseller would be far less again.

Much cheaper because I already have those parts laying around. Even Cheaper if I use my own 980M's instead of buying the 980. (But what's the fun in that)

That's why I say for me it would cheaper.

I would need more clarification from mythlogic on this life time upgrade and what you as an end user can do or not do to your machine and still be covered. This is where Dell just out surpassed everyone at. (At least about 98 percent of the time)

Ah, I didn't disclose part of the important detail too :)

The price I have for Mythlogic is for the barebones config, lowest CPU / Memory, no OS, no disk, and then subtract $170 for no CPU and subtract $70 for no memory - you have to ask they don't present the no CPU/memory options in their configurator.

    After talking with Mythlogic
    Mythlogic: $1,975.95 - 170 - 70 (est) = $1735.95
    rjtech: $1,736.00

    .05c higher!! Outrageous!! :D

Then adding the CPU, drives, OS, etc are equal being they are the same darned thing.

I actually thought it was a bit further off, so lets say they are equal except for the upgrade plan with Mythlogic - but I bet if I called RJTech they might offer the same thing... IDK.

Waiting for @Mr. Fox to play with the SLI 980m's and dual power adapters first

Update: It looks like the 980m is the same, but the 980 config, the one I want at the moment, is $425 at RJtech and only $385 at Mythlogic, to upgrade from 980m to 980!

And, the upgrade from 980m to 980m SLI is $625 at rjtech and $605 at Mythlogic... so they are both pretty close overall. :)

Actually I used the Chat and email functions, but same effect. I want to send them a delidded binned 6700K/6600K, 2666mhz/3000mhz memory, and a drive (already have it) to do the build, so needed to discuss details.

BTW, someone finally posted a youtube video / unboxing review for the GT80 SLI 980, but not benchmarks yet - and it's in French... anyone care to translate the useful bits - the google auto-translate captions aren't very good:

I find it totally impossible to take that machine seriously. I mean, c'mon... it is shackled by a worthless BGA turd CPU.
    • Latest 6th Gen. Intel® Core™ i7-6920HQ processor/ i7-6820HK processor
...instantly demoted to jokebook status... just like a disposable new Alienware or a $200 Walmart crapbook. Even if it ran extremely well it would still be a disposable piece of trash with a BGA CPU. Might as well just solder the RAM, GPU(s), WiFi and battery to the motherboard, too.

Yeah, I actually edited that out (put it back in now), after considering the audience :)

But, maybe it will help to motivate Clevo to release a 980 SLI PM870.

I lean toward the 6700K @ 4.5ghz providing just that edge needed to feed those hungry 980's, over the 6820HK @ 4.0ghz :)

Yeah, it's a matter of principle. Soldering any major components like that to the motherboard is an unpardonable sin. I would totally abandon the pursuit of any kind of gaming or benching on laptops if that's all there was left to choose from.

"... MSI have assured us that the highest end Intel Extreme Edition processor will be an option for this system."

I guess the MSI Marketing department lost their subscription to Intel Weekly

    MSI GT80 S SLI 980 specification, at least the first release is a 6820HK / 6920HQ with 980 SLI.

That was just a publicity stunt and a bunch of blatant marketing lies to deceive the public... unless the clowns at MSI think a low-TDP BGA pile of crap CPU is "extreme" LOL. I suppose they could have accidentally omitted the word "garbage" from that sentence. Then they could say it was a typo instead of lies.

Then they should have made it 1/16" thicker and used a socket with a 6700K instead of wimping out with a crippled soldered turd CPU. They have no legitimate excuse for producing garbage, just like Alienware doesn't. Then they might have had something for sale that is actually worth buying. Since they chose the BGA road, the best they can hope for is taking the "king of jokebooks" crown.

To be fair, both the GT80S and PM870 come with 1 330w power supply, it's a dealer option to add a second 330w adapter + coupler box... but there isn't a PM870 SLI 980 option yet, so that could change... I am hoping for a 500w-750w external power adapter.

Finally, got this behemoth of a laptop earlyer today. I gotta say, for my first laptop its amazing, more than I could have imagined. Coming form a gtx 660ti on the desktop side to a 980 is almost too much!! dont know what to do with all my frames!

Your gonna need them, its pretty fast. especially when you make the lights all red, then it goes even faster! But in all seriousness, I saved up extra and decided to go without a meal plan this semester at college to buy some ssds' and I tell ya, if you never had them before ssds' will change your life.

You can order the 29th Anniversary Edition version here:

    http://www.gentechpc.com/showpages.asp?pid=1565

So, there are actually 2 Special Edition GT80S 980 SLI models, and I would assume a follow on normal every day 980 SLI edition, so that's 3 models :)

I am waiting for the benchmark results of all the new Clevo / MSI models before jumping off into a new laptop. It's nice to have so many choices.

Guess i will have to wait and see. It's been over 6 months with talk of a 980 sli setup. Still waiting on that.

Now I have to call Ken to see if they actually have one.
Edit: If Ken confirms then I will be force to jump on Team @hmscott.

    Edit:

Going to reserve this...i can't tell what that guy has in the first video.

At least with you we don't have to ask you to please benchmark it, and wait for weeks for no response. Looking forward to the results :)

Do they offer the 2nd 330w power adapter + coupler, you probably already have it anyway :)

The other guy, the video, was of the Blizzard Hero's special edition, unless you are into that game it's probably not of interest - it's got cool looking graphics on it.

The other thing I heard, but not sure, is that the Hero's editions are Asia / European release, so it would require an import to the USA.

Maybe we should move the GT80 portion of the discussion to the GT80S 6QF SLI 980 forum?

Mounted new 1mm heatpipes. Temp of GPU 2 is now roughly 8c warmer under load. Peak temps are in Heaven in the region of 65c for GPU 1 and 73c for GPU 2 with maxed fans. CPU gets a little bit hotter now, but this is difficult to quantify.

I am still not completely satisfied. Next thing I will do (when I find the time) is to remove the black paint from the original clevo heatpipes because I think heat transfer between original pipes and additional pipes is not optimal.

Any suggestions what would be the best strategy to remove the black paint?

I'm not so sure it's a good idea unless you want to scratch it in specific areas. Black paint, if it is what I think, increases thermal radiation, so if you remove it completely it can give an exactly opposite result.

I would only like to remove it where contact is made with the added 1mm pipes, so radiation of heat shouldn´t be a problem.

Yes, but you won't be able to revert this process. You would probably be good with just something between for the first attempt, like thinner pipes. At least that's what I'd do. It's like applying a generic thermal paste insead of stock paste. It's not "CLU", but at least it gives the idea of how it's going to work.

That's what I'm planning to do, just removing the paint where they make contact. I would use a fine grit Sandpaper (maybe 800 grit)on a small wooden block so you dont sand them unevenly. I'm unsure how thick the stock heat pipes are (because mine STILL hasn't gotten here), so I would be careful about taking too much material away but you need as smooth a surface as possible for optimal heat transference.

Interesting. Notebookcheck have a review of the P775DM and internal shots show it is using two different fans: The GPU fan seems to be the same as the GPU1 fan of the P870DM while the CPU fan seems to be the smaller fan located in the middle of the chassis in the P870DM (GPU2 fan).

Also, the 180W version of the GTX 980 seems to be as fast as the 200W version ;-)

Cooling system is louder than P870DM, one fan seems to be quite high pitched as the review states - I would say probably it´s the smaller one.

I was ready to buy one when they first (falsely) advertised an Extreme CPU way back when. As soon as I saw the option was actually a BGA CPU it was instantly removed from my list of desirable purchase options. It is also not worthy of being discussed in this thread any more. It is in a lower grade non-enthusiast disposable gamer class, and off topic. Sorry for contributing to the distraction... partly my fault.

Try some cotton balls and nail polish remover. If you don't have a lady in your family that you can steal some from, the local drugstore or dollar store should have some dirt cheap. Just don't drip it on anything that you want to not have the finish ruined on, 'cause it will do that. If you're not already exposed to it by the lady(s) in your life, you'll also want to use it in a well ventilated room... the fumes will tear you up.

Guys, I have been away for ages. Last time I posted here, there were no selfie sticks, climate change was not being discussed and Mr.Fox was new on the forums :). Thus, I have some questions to get acclimated.

I thought the P870D cannot do the 980 in SLI because the 980 MXM module is a bit wider than normal and takes up a portion of the second MXM slot? Can the P870D handle 980M in SLI well?

What you mean is the 200w variant. That will fit only once in a Phoenix. BUT there is also the 180w variant. This one is SLIable and will (hopefully) be available soon. There was also mentioned a 120w Low Power variant of the 980. Dunno what's up with this one....

    Edit: Btw: Welcome back!

If you get one somehow, take some pics of that 980 SLI setup.

Curious to see if they're using standard MXM3.0b cards or if they're slightly bigger like the rest of the variants we've seen thus far.

Any idea when this one is coming out? I just purchased a Phoenix with a single 200w GTX980.. Still has to be assembled by Mythlogic but I'd much prefer having the option to SLI in the future. I do know they have the lifetime upgrade plan like you guys mentioned but why pay for the same card, unless they trade..

I'm not really looking forward to 980 SLI as some of the non-gaming applications I use make it very messy...

Aside from that, my unit comes in tomorrow. That and the Razer Blade finally sold, so I will have to do some updates...

Well looks like a confirmed Desktop 980 SLI laptop will be out next week. No pictures yet of the sli card though.

Edit:This is for the GT80 and not the P870DM
    Per hmscotts Request.
