I am confused.... Are we getting a 980 SLI p870dm now?

Anyways, G-Sync is not working on fallout 4 with SLI. It was working before I switched to the hotfix driver and switched back. Hmmmm

I don't get it. Is desktop 980 sli for P870DM confirmed now or was this a joke?

    MSI.

    GT80
    GT80 not the P870DM

No one seems to have a definite answer for this. Just a bunch of speculations. Although when I called no one seems to even know about the DT 980 SLI.
Or they are waiting till next week to say something.
This stems from a GT80 post above.

This thing looks absolutely beautiful. I am so tempted to jettison my Haswell desktop and laptop and center around this gorgeous hunk of machinery.

It is really amazing, and a gorgeous beast.

For those that have been following my review at PremaMod.com (which still is not finished) you saw the memory performance of the various modules.

This evening I was able to do some tweaking and got the 16GB (64GB total) Crucial/Micron 2133 modules to run a stable 2400 CL15-15-15-36 1T. (I was able to do CL14, but got a few errors in tm5 testing, so I locked it down to the SPD at CL15 in a custom XMP profile.)

While not as fast as the smaller 4GB and 8GB HyperX Impact sticks that I have overclocked to 2800, it's still a nice performance bump for such huge memory sticks.

    Who? Me? Or, @johnksss ?

I haven't decided for certain. Do I want one? Helluvah big yeah... but, not if I have to go into debt to acquire one. I think I have all of my Alienware stuff sold off. If that deal goes through I need a replacement 980M for my Panther. If I have enough to pay cash for it, I will definitely grab one. I might even settle for single GTX 980 since I already have 980M SLI in the Panther. That would give me a really sweet gaming/travel machine that I can overclock to the edge of its functional limits with just one 330W AC adapter. That's nice for the sake of convenience and would save me a few bucks versus 980M SLI. I have already earned quite a few hardware points with it on HWBOT.

I am so close to 5.0GHz that I would hate to give up too early. There are a crap ton of BIOS settings that I haven't figured out yet. I may never get 5.0GHz stable, but who knows what kind of tweaks might be available that I haven't figured out yet with some of those menus that I cannot find any definitions for anywhere on the internet. All I can find is posts from desktop owners on Overclock.net with 6700K asking questions about what some of them are for, but no answers. I have been looking at Z170 desktop board owner's manuals and even those are absolutely worthless as far as defining what some of the settings are actually for. I'm like, " duh-err, silly derps... I can read what's on the menu staring at my screen; so don't put it in the stinking manual unless you intend to tell me what it's for, and why I should care" LOL. And so many useless acronyms that only lead to dead ends on Google... crazy... like they want to keep it all a mystery. Stuff like RSR, TDC, PSP, PS3, PS4, IMON Slope, etc.

Wow, that's extremely unfortunate, especially considering it's the only laptop with a competent Quad Core CPU that is actually capable of making GTX 980 SLI be all it can be with only 4 cores/8 threads to work with. I wonder what the deal is and why they changed their minds? Maybe the sub-200W versions aren't enough of an improvement over 980M SLI to bother? Or, maybe dual 330W AC adapters won't cut it for 980 SLI extreme overclocking demands?

Maybe if we can source the GPUs elsewhere that would be a nice aftermarket upgrade for the Panther. I could use 3 x AC-100 adapters and 4 x 330W bricks to cobble together 1320W of power if I need to.

I won't be winking at the crappy BGA CPUs on the systems that ship with them just for the sake of having it... cannot bring myself to stoop to that level of compromise just to have two 980 GPUs.

This is the one thing with the GT80 model with SLI that I really want to find out, to see how it performs in comparison. As well as how any other single 980 models might compare to the Clevo in the future, since the Clevo looks to be the most powerful (as far as I know).

Yes, I would like to see how those GPUs compare with 980M and 200W GTX 980 as well. It's hard to know how much is unfounded hype without some hard numbers to look at. The 200W version is definitely a beast, but it's only a guess on those toned-down versions at this point. I am starting to become abnormally skeptical about marketing hype where NVIDIA products are concerned. They seems to be doing a better job at that than they do with hardware and drivers lately.

Pat, is it 100% confirmed that the GT80 will have the sub-200W GTX 980 in SLI, and is it available for order yet? Seems like we are having a hard time deciphering between myth and reality, and I wonder to what extent this is marketing hype or a statement of future intentions rather than something that is actually ready to buy. Although it would not be compelling enough to dismiss the castrated CPU configuration, it would be really ironic if a model shackled by a BGA CPU got it and the better-engineered product with a socketed desktop 6700K and double the power supply did not.

Should be interesting to see what lengths they have to go to re-engineer it to handle that, with the extra phases needed on the motherboard, etc.. And, I wonder what they are going to use to power it... 330W won't be enough power to move it across the street at stock clock speeds. Surely, or hopefully, they won't try getting by with just one 330W AC adapter. That would be both tragic and laughable (like an Alienware 18 running 980M SLI with only one 330W adapter... woefully inadequate). Maybe they will do something nice, like develop a single 800W AC adapter that we can use on machines with better CPUs in them.

Edit: Oh c'mon... really?!? No way, Jose. Ain't gonna happen. I just pulled +360W with one 980 in the Sky X9. Either that's wrong information, or they are going to pull "an Alienware" on us.

They obviously don't care about the functionality of their products or the customer experience. And, they must have no intentions for anyone to receive full performance, much less the thought of overclocking. 230W... That's just absolutely nuts. Like having a Peterbilt with a 5 gallon fuel tank... it will run for a long time... at an idle.

    1: unlocked 6700k
    2: unlocked 980

    The opposition
    1:locked 45W cpu
2:lock 200W max per card, with throttling...er ah boost technology. And max when it's one card not two.

Look at the machine you are testing. It was the exact same way before it got unlocked. lol

Edit And the Alienware 18 was flat out locked at 330W when we all know the adapter will run out at 440W to 452W max.

That's why I made the statement " They obviously don't care about the functionality of their products or the customer experience."

But, if it gives us an extra source from which to steal GPUs from for use in a better product, I hope they knock themselves out building that junky castrated crap.

Nah, this wasn't anywhere near bad. Ran really great stock, just lots better unlocked. Held solid 4.5GHz on the CPU in physics testing on the stock BIOS doing nothing but changing the multis to 45x4, LOL.

Does this mean that Clevo will just not sell this configuration or does this mean it is also technically not possible?

I think we should still be able to pull out 2 980s 180W of lets say 2 P775DM and put them into P870DM? I think the question is, if the 180W version will be sold separately in the future and if the SLI heatsinks of the P870DM fit onto the 180W cards.

Indeed... way too much funny stuff. What we don't know, and maybe should not even really care about at this point, is what kind of worthless morphodite GPU they might be selling. It may be a fancy name on a marginal product, designed to sucker unsuspecting consumers into getting something based on what it's called instead of how it functions. If they destroy its performance in order to keep it in an abnormally low power envelope it will be an excellent example of the "jokebook" and "turdbook" expressions that I invented when Alienware took a big old hot and steamy BGA dump on us. That being the case, there should be nothing for a single GTX 980 or 980M SLI Clevo owner to be envious of... just a shiny foil wrapper around a puke-flavored chocolate nugget.

Better to wait for them to build it with the right stuff than rush it to market crippled and broken like the GT80 is destined to be. These GPUs required extra hardware on the motherboard. The MXM slot is not not enough. On top of the hardware requirements, one 330W AC adapter is just barely enough for one GTX 980 and two 330W AC adapters is only adequate (not ample) for overclocked 980M SLI. If Clevo is not releasing it, I would be willing to bet that there is a good reason behind it. If you have to cripple the machine to make it functional, you're only selling a gimmick and pandering to ignorant consumers in order to make a fast buck.

Since the GT80 will use a BGA processor instead of a desktop one I'm sure they'll make two 120W 980s work. It won't use as much power as the 6700K.

Also, like @johnksss said the 330w adapter can pull up to 450W max.

There's no way we'd see dual 980s (even if they were the 120W versions) work on the P870DM with a single 330w adapter LOL.

I think I heard over at the MSI section that the GT80 was able to use 2x330w adapters since they use the same connector as Clevo but not sure.

Clevo didn't changed their minds, SLI GTX980 as never planned for P870DM.

LOL John, the 230W is a typo. :D

As far as I know it's not possible, what I understand is because of the GTX980 PCB.

All 6700K s will do 4.5 to 4.7 ghz out of the box.. That is a given. If it doesn't then it falls to user and or firmware.
Here is a whole list of scores. Starting from the bottom that are based off stock configs.
    http://www.3dmark.com/search#/?mode...3dm11/P/1061/500000?minScore=0&gpuName=NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980 (notebook)
just about everyone on that list is running windows 10 though. And looks like at best 3 to 5 different users. Speculation of course.

true that, with that bga crap cpu theyll be at max. 240+45=285W, lets say 315W at stock for the whole system, thatll give u a HUGE 15W to do overclocking before ure starting to hit the psu's limit *lol*

Glad that was a typo. That would have been a very "Alienware-ish" thing to do, LOL. Still should be kind of cute to see how GTX 980 SLI runs on a single 330W AC adapter. Probably OK stock with a crippled stock NVIDIA throttle-master vBIOS, with no overclock headroom to speak of.

There are two GPU auxiliary power ports on the motherboard that looks as if they had a reason to, at least in the motherboard design. But, I'm not sure what kind of heat sink and fan arrangement it would require, since single GTX 980 cooling system already takes up the space for its own cooling system and hogs most of the available space for the second GPU in SLI, it would likely take something more than what the 980M cooling system provides.

Oh, and don't forget about the amazing NVIDIA BATTERY BOOST technology! Yeah, that's the ticket, LOL. NOT!!!

Yeah it as a typo LOL. No body would believe a 230W will work. :)

As for P870DM with SLI 980, the PCB layout is the issue.

prema has already spilled several hints as to clevo internally testing a 980 version in regular MXM format (as in 100% standard, no mm wider or longer) and that the testing should push a potential release of such a card to a later point in time. also, hes been driving me nuts with breadcrumbs about some "secret hardware project".

ask yourselves, why the P870DM special phoenix edition hasnt been released yet? im still very optimistic about 980 SLI.... :D

Since Msi maybe would release gtx980 sli; Because Msi can create their own graphics cards for laptops?

they all can :) the laptop manufacturers / ODMs are responsible for designing and building the MXM gpus. they only get the chips from nvidia and the memory from samsung/hynix/etc...

so yeah, each manufacturer can basically make their very own design of the 980, both in TDP level, clocks and form factor / dimensions...

Maybe @ GenTechPC can help us there, but there is another desktop cpu using notebook which looks like nothing clevo, and has msi bells and whistles all over it.If so whats stopping msi from using this design that they odm in their own machines.Well according to customer support, they confirmed msi oem it (however credible their info is).

We've discussed it elsewhere , just not convinced this is Clevo's doing.Unless two re-sellers did a major screw up in images and specs sheet.

Edit: I've seen consumers inquire about them on the inter-webs,with replies passing them off as clevo DM/ZM series and that feels like misinformation.

120-150watt? don't comment.. Desktop cpu and 970m-980m? Might as well call it........

    Sorry for the topic derail

donno why all the hype about 980 SLI its likely a dead end with no upgrade, we all know nvidia getting rid of these extra chips so they can still make money and make us pay premium. if theres enough buyer for pascal mobile and chips are used up they won't bother with 1080 SLI edition, unless 1080m would fit into this machine too.

the heatsinks are way too small to rid of heat generated with two 980 SLI anyway. the other guy with mod could still do well but then would have to clock down CPU from the looks of it. imho 2x 980m sli is the way to go, or just wait for pascal in general.

    edit: lol @ http://www.pcgamer.com/intel-skylake-cpus-are-bending-under-the-pressure-of-some-coolers/

i guess this won't happen in laptop cause heatsink is puny compare to some desktop cooler, but this is pretty funny with thinner pcb.

Either one, but only in the following circumstances: (a) Win8+ and (b) No RAID0

Unfortunately, NVMe is too unfriendly to the world's last good version of Windows OS (W7) and the Samsung 950 Pro NVMe has some problems working correctly in RAID0 (does its impression of the invisible man and mysteriously cannot be seen by the BIOS). Samsung needs to update the firmware or something because it's a little buggy. If you already own them it's too late, but otherwise I would give NVMe another year or so to mature before adopting it. Got way too many new car bugs. I know I won't buy it right now. I'm really glad the review unit had them because I might have jumped on NVMe had I not been directly exposed to it. If I buy one of these it will have ordinary M.2 SSD and preferably no G-SYNC feature.

I've been thinking about the same thing. That's entirely possible... special heat sinks and elaborate cooling for something that has no successor and no upgrade path. I'm not hip on blowing a huge wad of cash on one-shot wonders. Might turn out to not be smart to jump on it now and wait to see if there is even a round #2 for this. If not, then it's going to suck to own a proprietary pile of trash and have to buy all new standard MXM cooling system parts for the next GPU upgrade. Early adoption is always dangerous, and when NVIDIA's name is on it, it is extra dangerous. They do make some awesome stuff, but they are also the masters of gimmicks. They are too preoccupied with their stupid GFE bloatware crap that caters to the jokebook children. It wouldn't surprise me if they do something extra super-retarded in the near future, like drop SLI support since jokebook gaming and stupid stuff like Shield streaming has become such a huge distraction from producing world-class hardware and drivers. I'm not forgiving them for the clock-block shenanigans... they'll need to show me a track records that spans several years of excellent behavior before I let them off the hook for that evil deed, and I'm still bitter about them ruining my perfectly good 780M cards with their cancer drivers. And, don't forget the active thread on the LCD bricking. These scum-sucking worms are not trustworthy.

This is me too. Sad, but I'm down to my last Alienware when I usually kept a minimum of two and sometimes had three or more on deck over the past 4+ years. I had so much fun tearing them down, modding, 'Dremelizing' them and more, but the new stuff just isn't for the modder/enthusiast.

This is exactly what I was thinking of doing. Selling my last Alienware and desktop and settle into a nice 6700k + 980 and go from there. It would make the perfect laptop/desktop solution for me along with something super thin/light like a Surface Pro 4 or similar.

This is exactly how I feel. I understand the how and why they are moving th BGA and their market demographics, but unfortunately it isn't mine. :(

Ngreedia's new found love of streaming and the cloud scares me,Tried out a beta GFE which allows you to stream games through chrome.Sound like pretty soon manufactures will release some gimmed toys with subscriptions and praise how because of this new engineering we can go even thinner and lighter.

Think the industry is to hell bent on following apple even if it means soldering every darn thing.

Lets not start with the consumers,a dude reviewed the g752 and called it very upgrade-able.

To keep backing us into corners and saying its whats best for the user is.... i dunno...
I love advancements in tech but when its pissing in our eyes and calling it rain, thats something else

I really hope that we don't face the Situation in the future where we are forced to use "Terminals" to access the web, games, etc. This is where the main "Cloud-Providers" wants us to have: They provide the Hardware/Performance and you choose how much Performance you wanna have and pay for it "abonnement-like" + they get all the Data you produce while using it.

I know, sounds nightmarish but the actual "Trends" -> Tablets, lighter/thinner devices, BGA crap, Cloud Computing, Big Data, did I miss something? - are pointing toward it, though it may take awhile! In the meantime we have The Void! ;)

That could really happen. There are plenty of imbeciles in the world that are willing--even some so stupid as to be eager--to go along with such an idiotic approach to technology. 'Possums also enjoy eating feces, but that doesn't mean that we should join them. Still, there will be those that are jealous that they did not receive an equal portion of the smelly solid waste and willing to fight to get their 'fair share' of it.

Thats the biggest reason I have gone on SLI bandwagon. A single 200w 980 is gonna be impossible to sell once you want to upgrade. Barely anyone will buy it. Honestly, as I commented on a earlier thread, I wonder what is the clock per clock performance of a 980 vs 980m. I am guessing no more then 15-20%. Just from looking at 970, the crippled shader barely did a thing to slow it down, the reason why 970 is less powerful is probably mostly due to the 192bit bus and lower stock clocks.

Especially when I am matching 970 SLI scores with a stock OC on my 980m SLI that is lower then 970 mem stock clock.

I am willing to do a clock per clock test if anyone is willing to underclock their 980.
