It depends, I will upload a video of my SLI config on games after I get it back. Hopefully that will make it a little clear to you. If you really need that optical drive, I must say, my old GT70 didnt hold any candle to this beast. Do you really need an ODD everyday outside of home?
-
If you want SLI, and you're aware that SLI support is likely to be extremely bad at launch for new games and that a decent few games using Unreal Engine 4 or Unity 5 will never support SLI are going to come out? Then go ahead and buy SLI. Microstuttering is not really a problem unless a game is badly coded (some games like Black Ops 3 and Killing Floor 2 are awfully coded and will microstutter like crazy in windowed mode, for example).
As for the reason why people are considering this machine in single-GPU, it's because it's upgrade-able to (Pascal/Polaris) SLI/Crossfire in the future, as well as having the highest-TDP 980 (best for overclocking) and the best cooling for that card as well. It's a better designed system for cooling and overclocking (especially with the CPU) as well.
But if single GPU is all you're concerned about and you do in fact want the ODD, the GT72 would be a more useful buy, though upgrading would likely not be possible in the future (I guess maybe if MSI's upgrade guarantee holds, however one generation for Maxwell was used, and the upcoming maxwell refresh might be considered the next "generation" so no pascal upgrading will happen, and the CPU can't be changed out).Terrablade likes this. -
Got to tell you. that put my mind at ease there. ODD is not that BIG of a deal what its a BIG of a deal is the darn Keyboard. More than 8 years using AW and or XPS with a 17 inch keyboard its going to make it real hard for me to get used to. I hope them cheap folks decide to spend an extra 50 bucks for a suitable 17inch keyboard not so far from now. It really sickens me.
-
Guess the option should be the desktop class right? The GPU? http://prntscr.com/9t7dtd
-
Honestly, for only 220 dollars more, I would go with 980M SLI, but I am a huge advocate for multi gpu.
Speaking of the keyboard, it is not the worst keyboard I ever used. Which is not saying much coming from a guy that had been using cheap dell/hp keyboard all his life. It is usable..... -
D2 Ultima got me out of SLI with his posts. If ithas issues now and the system is upgrade-able, i rather go for100% working and upgrade later if issues are resolved, than start with issues right of the bat. And KF2 is 1 of the games i currently play

There is also a stuttering fix in there for KF2 SLI.

That's a long wait, we could hear about Pascal releases around that time, or just after.
Did they mention a cost difference between SLI 980m and SLI 980?
And, lots of questions, but the main ones are, is it going to be based on the P870 frame, or a new one? Will they provide larger than 330w power adapters and support dual power adapters of the new wattage?
Pretty cool stuff, been waiting for this

I would imagine there is a price difference. Right now I believe the 180w 980 GPU from eurocom is still priced to be 1700 CAD while the 980m is 980CAD. Though moving from 98 to 980m only costs 300 cad.
My gut feeling is it will be 1000-1500 CAD more than the 980m sli system. Honestly I am happy with my 980Ms until pascal. I am planning to get a pair of pascal flagship when they release it next year.
I believe it is still the same chassis as its all based off clevo systems.hmscott likes this. -
I finally got the laptop. The delivery woman made a mistake and I thought that it was lost! But it was not and daaamnn I love this beast and you guys helping each other your are the best and the reason why I bought this one over a msi laptop! My thoughts on the keyboard? It's okay to me!

Ya I hope not but I was assuming it's the same 180watt card in the sky x7 already offered. I sent an email to ask if so and how much

Lucky.
I dont know anyone who wants to buy a pair of 980Ms. I suppose if you can sell them off, its a good deal. I do want to know how much for each 980 though. -
Well that sucks. They went with 5ghz memory. Most desktop 970s are 6 to 7 ghz
-
The sli 980 went with 5ghz vram?
-
Yup 980MX has 1664 cores. That's the only difference I can find from a 980M. It isn't even 970 desktop level since they're using 5ghz ram as apposed to 7ghz ram.
GTX 980 will be the fastest laptop card until pascal it seems. -
That probably explains why its stupidly expensive.
-
Seen the cores, but that 5ghz memory is like a straight buzz kill!

@Prema
So this is an image of my Eurocom Sky X9 which is at the HIDevolution office right now, does this VBIOS look like a PREMA VBIOS or is it the stock VBIOS?
-

wrong as in that's a stock VBIOS heh? how can I tell anyway? is there anything that tells a user its a PREMA magical BIOS ? -
That's my BIOS/EC and ME, but not my vBIOS, that one is stock.

Right, that should be an easy fix! Thanks chief! -
Anybody know if the 980MX has the same segmented vRAM bullcrap? I called it, but I haven't kept up with the specs.
As someone who's tried this, it doesn't work any longer. It's best to just use the nVidia SLI profile, or force it to AFR2 in NCP. The batman profiles now crash the game on first launch, and don't offer any benefit over the default one.
All desktop maxwell cards from the 960 and up are minimum 7GHz memory, not counting obscure OEM ones that I don't know of (like the OEM 960 that has the core count of the 970M and a 192-bit memory bus). -
What is the solution for this problem?
-
What would be a safe temperature range for the 980 desktop gpu for long term use?
-
Figured I would show you guys my first benchmark with gpu +125/300

Push dat_GPU MOAR. It's barely competing with my 780Ms! I EXPECT IT TO TEAR FIRE FROM BRIMSTONE ITSELF

OK so if I am crashing at 130 core what would be my first step? Increase power limit in msi afterburner? It's greyed out currently but I can basically crank core up as high as I want. Don't wanna overdue it but need some guidance to push GPU just a tad more. I don't wanna get into the 90s for temps so I'll do what I can up to that point.

Ok so...update on my OCing the GPU.. I now am not exactly sure why it's crashing. I did firestrike tests at 125 and some gaming and now all the sudden my screen will go black after playing for 5 mins. That was with core at 135...130... or 125. Is this driver related and windows 10 related?
-
Does it happen at stock?
-
I confused even more now! It happened at stock this time yes. The other times it jut crashed to solid color screen then went black but the sound was still going on the background. The time is crashed at stock was a little different... the video driver crashed and reset and screen came back on 2 secs later. So im not sure... thoughts?

Why not use the laptop at stock speeds for a week at least to make sure it is fine before you try to mess around with overclocking? This way, you don't even know if you got a properly functioning laptop or not since it might be the overclock or it might be the laptop itself or any other component. Take it one step at a time.DreDre likes this. -

What driver are you using for the nVIDIA GPU? I suggest sticking to the latest one provided by CLEVO that is more stable than the latest nVIDIA one. IT is available here:
Clevo P870DM/DM-G Drivers Mirror -
359.14 is the one Mythlogic has installed out of the box.
-
Spartan@HIDevolution Company Representative
ok that's close to the one from CLEVO which is 359.00, the latest one (361.43) is garbage but this one should be fine. -
Use DDU and try 359.00 or 359.06, or even try again 359.14. I know Mythlogic generally doesn't screw up QA testing at all, so this is likely some kind of other weirdness.
That kind of crashing usually happens (from what I gather) when something other than the core is overheating on the GPU... but since your machine is fresh it's unlikely. If it happens after DDU and reinstalling drivers, then contact Mythlogic to find out what to do. It sucks to get a machine that's essentially DOA, but that behaviour is not right at all.Spartan@HIDevolution likes this. -
It's weird because it's not a crash i'm used to. It's like the video driver crashes... I do have to restart the laptop but all the sound is going on in the back and if I continue to execute certain abilities in world of warcraft my character responds to them. So its not like artifacts or blue screen or anything. I feel like there could be an easy fix.

I've tested 359.00 drivers from Clevo, they are perfectly stable. Try them. Uninstall the old one using DDU though don't do an over the top installation -
I'm going to speak to Mythlogic tomorrow I feel like I'm missing something. I doubt this should crash with such a light over clock. Hopefully just something I'm missing.

Voltage may be too low. If you are running stock vBIOS, ask Mythlogic to provide the PremaMod, as they're a partner.hmscott likes this.

I finally got to run the Cards again but this time around I couldn't get the +380/+60/+150mV setting to stabilize. I dropped it back to +350/+70/+125mV and it's stable. You can see the vBios is the modded one from Prema and the drivers are 359.06. I can't get it to OC any more than this and run stable. The +150mV seems to be the limit, I can't find a way around it. Does the System Bios play a role in OC'ing the Graphics Cards? I tried resetting the CPU voltage to Stock again but it didn't seem to help. I'm a bit stumped as to why I cant seem to break out of the mid 12K on Fire Strike when I have seen lots of Benchmarks over 13K and even 14K.
-
Your vRAM OC is too low...

If you up your cards to +350 core clock, is +70 mem clock the max you can get at 125mv?

Thanks Prema, I guess I was being to timid with the clocks, when it started crashing I upped the voltage more and more. Now it looks better, I'm averaging about 13370 now in FS. I'm still running into a wall when I push a little beyond the new +350/+450/+125mV settings. I did push it to +350/+500/+137.5mV but it was hit and miss, although it did score a 13593 in FS at those settings. Still quite a way from 14k though.

Good overclock. You'll have to keep things really cool to overclock higher probably.
In my Panther 5 I was able to run 1510Mhz with 6Ghz memory clocks @ 1.2v on my 970M:
