Most of my games support SLI. The ones that don't aren't as demanding and can be run with my current 980. So with that...it would be a much better choice for me to go 1070 SLI. Each 1070 will be faster than my 980. It will be about 25% slower than a single 1080 in non sli.
Also I benchmark, 1070 SLI > 1080 easily.
The only two games I'm interested in this year are Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2 and Battlefield 1. Maybe COD but we'll see about that. Xenoverse 2 will not support SLI but I can run Xenoverse 1 easily with a 980 @ 4K so I expect a 1070 to play 2 no problem. Battlefield 1 will most likely support SLI so I'm not worried there.
I love the 4K 100% Adobe RGB panel and will keep it. The GPU upgrade will also allow me to use G-SYNC on this panel since my current 980 is a non G-SYNC 980. I still deal with 120hz 1080p (My old Alienware 17 that my bother has) it's nice and all but I'm fine with my 4K display.

I only have one word to express my sentiments about 1070, and it was the same word for 970/970M... "MEH!" SLI won't fix it... still second fiddle trash.
That's why I hadn't heard of it. It shows they are capable of being awesome when they want to be, but it doesn't play out that way for 99.999% of their customers. For the masses it turns out like crap, especially those with crippled MSI BGA turdbooks.
Edit: I have a difficult time showing respect when awesomeness is trickled out to a small group of customers purely as a publicity stunt. It is not an accurate representation of their product line and makes me not want to own anything they sell.Last edited: Aug 7, 2016 -
Sadly it seems that's all we're left with. Single 1080, 1070 SLI, or stick with our 980 or 980m SLI.
Unless of course we do what Khenglish did and buy 1070 SLI then swap out the core with 1080 LOL -
buy the 1080 desktop from micro center and return it after core swap saying "performance not as advertised" lol
full money back
as for what I'm going to buy next gen, probably just a refresh of the aw17, they're really cheap from dell outlet with all the coupons from twitter and whatnot -

Hm, 3D printing it would be possible but would the adapter material be able to withstand all that current? If this question can be answered, we should be fine with this approach!

Plus it would offset a card from its heatsink mounting unless you de-soldered its connector to do it.
-
But will that heatsink be better than the one for the current 980?
You don't need to answer
-
If they would have gone with the PCB in the middle, none of this discussion would have been necessary. Everyone that wanted 1080 SLI would be able to have it. That would have been the customer-centric approach and would have eliminated the need for them to reinvent the wheel. Buying a couple of GPUs and an enhanced heat sink assembly we would have been good to go. But, we can forget about that now. You're either going to be happy to be a single GPU jocket indefinitely, madder than hell about getting screwed, or filthy rich and ready to drop another huge wad of cash on the 2.0 version of basically the same product.
And, this is a very bad trend no matter what angle you're coming from... we already had two oddball MXM form factors in Clevo machines and that was enough. Now we have a third oddball form factor (not pictured) in 1080, for a total of four PCB variations including standard MXM. Where does this stop and what kind of slippery slope does it lead us to? They've totally ruined the P870DM ownership experience with this fourth version that won't fit next to each other because they made a really horrible design decision. A decision that doesn't instill much confidence in the brand and will cause me (and hopefully many others) to pause and re-evaluate what their next step should be. Maybe a person that is not getting screwed because they did not already buy the obsolete version less than a year ago thinks this is not a big deal. Those people need to stop and ask themselves, " Will this pathetic situation be where I find myself this time next year?"

Right, maybe desoldering the current MXM slot and just moving it over with the help of a simple stick-on pcb to re-route the traces would be the best solution.
It's roughly identical, the L-shape is just covering the left side instead of the right side. The single screw is also in the exact same position as on the current 980 heatsink. -
You would still need to get a new heat sink because of the L being flipped. I'd be OK with buying new heat sinks.
-
Wont just locking the heat sink down with only 1 scew hinder proper core to heat sink contact?

I know your situation is very sad but i feel that if the old P870DM can be updated to one 1080 or 1070 SLI then i dont think we can blame blame clevo for foul play..
Initially P870DM was holding one desktop 980 or two 980M. so you could just swap those with their equivalent GPU now.
P870DM3 is new product which they never offered before. Now usefulness of this new product is a different issue altogether.
My two cents...Last edited: Aug 7, 2016 -
There are 5 screws on the heatsink (same as before) 4 go around the GPU DIE and one keeps the whole thing in place (this is in the same spot as before). So contact for cooling is no problem. The only thing you may not have on current revision boards are the screws between the MXM board itself and the motherboard.Last edited: Aug 7, 2016

Does anyone have a dropbox or google drive link to the manual? I must have really bad timing but all the ones I've tried don't work anymore.
-
I think he was confused because there is no tab with a 5th screw on the 200W 980 heat sink. The developer unit from Eurocom had that, but mine does not and the photos I have seen in the forum does not have that extra tab.
But, it's really not a new product. It's very close to identical, and the revisions are very minor in the grand scheme of things. They corrected some of their mistakes on the first version and added a second TB3 port, but that's about the extent of it. See my previous post.
They could have used the middle PCB and given existing P870DM-G owners a 1080 SLI upgrade path. Hopefully, they will still do that and haven't told us yet. If they don't, then they should be ashamed of themselves for screwing us by not using the design pictured in the middle. They should also be ashamed of themselves for having never released the Titan-slayer 980 SLI.Last edited: Aug 7, 2016Papusan likes this. -
Ah, OK! Totally spaced that Clevo removed that from MP model.
Anyway the screw goes in here:

Yeah, i was kinda scratching my head if it was me never noticing that screw hole lol.
Gotcha. Till the time we can screw the gpu to the heat sink, it shouldn't be a problem. Heck i even ran the GPU without the motherboard screw for a while just to test if that helps in better thermal pad contact.
But since the Heat Sink can be screw to the frame and the GPU gets screwed to the Heat Sink, we should be good.Papusan likes this. -

No idea, the early 980 heatsink models looked like this:

how odd.. -
We have a similar situation on the zm, no top screw. Meanwhile, the 775dm heatsink has one and extra coverage...

In which way would a single 1080 would not fit? Length? Width? Cos it has enough width just to do one in the master slot but the length needs to be verified.

My gut feeling made me choose the GT72S with the 980 and now I feel like I made the right choice. The 870DM was alluring with its non BGA cpu but I got that on my business laptop so can't complain
Now let's see if we manage to fit an MSI 1070 in the P75XDM :3 ( @Prema looking at you ) cough -
Ok, though the question remains of both power and the heatsink.
Sent from my SM-N910G using Tapatalk -
Since the L is pointing the opposite direction and the master MXM slot appears to have been moved away from the slave MXM slot about a quarter inch, I am almost positive installing one 1080 would require a new heat sink designed for a single 1080. I don't see any way the 200W 980 heat sink could fit. It would hang off on one side at least a half inch and leave about the same exposed on the opposite side, and the four spring arms probably won't line up with the screw holes at the four corners of the GPU core. It's probably safe to expect that heat sink to be very expensive if it is made similar to the 200W 980 heat sink.
-
Already covered. It fits.

Yup just saw it but will it be easy to upgrade overall? Like are there any modifications that need to be made?
-
New heatsink, probably. Also, it is still unknown whether it needs additional power to run it, which early dm and zm boards don't have the connector soldered to the mb. Other than those concerns, it should be fine, although it may be hot running overall. Time will tell!

@Prema
By any chance do you know if Clevo are extending that courtesy to supply heatsinks for purchase? -
can solder connection to mb? -
I think Eurocom should as soon as possible start with a clean up on their main web page http://www.eurocom.com/ec/main()ec This is not true at all as it is now. Mark at Eurcom should have soon as possible had a chat with people on Clevo!! Not Eurocoms fault, but they should take down this info about gpu's from their main web page. Put it back again on their main web page after they have talked with CLEVO. Only if they receive correct info from CLEVO!!
Edit. Clevo has perhaps studied Eurocom's Poll of the week earlier who was about upgradable GPU's?Last edited: Aug 7, 2016oveco, TBoneSan, steberg and 1 other person like this. -
I was not considering how it supports SLI, but how SLI scales at 4K. Which is abhorrently.
Edit: To clarify, I'm talking "10-30% improvement over single GPU is considered normal with newer titles". I think OCing a single 1080 would actually give you a better benefit in many cases. Especially because we:
- Don't have an OC'd SLI bridge (LED bridge)
- Don't have a HB bridge
- Don't have any confirmation that the MXM slots are changed in some way to allow more GPU-GPU transfer of data (which would negate the need for a better bridge, and is NORMALLY tied to PCI/e connection speed, in which case we have 3.0 x8/x8 because no enthusiast CPUs)
- Don't have access to PCI/e 3.0 x16/x16 configsLast edited: Aug 7, 2016 -

He should regardless chatted with Clevo about this mess and unhappy Clevo owners. A sad turn with upgradeable graphics. Some have to push Clevo back on track!! Eurcom can try to do that...
-
You should contact more than Eurocom. Mythlogic still sells with their "Phoenix Upgrade Plan" which lasts 4 years.Georgel likes this.
-
Do you think they will really swap out a P870DM-G with 980M SLI for one with 1080 SLI? If not, the upgrade plan is meaningless marketing hype now that they have gone stupid on us with an oddball form factor. If the upgrade plan means they will sell you all the parts you need, that's not unique. Just about any Clevo reseller will sell you the parts if you've got the money.
-
Totally agree with you. Posted this in full speed. Company as these two and maybe others should put pressure on Clevo. I mentioned Eurocom because they advertises upgrade packages and have done it long time, and also show this upgrade info about gpu's in their main page.
-
If y'all really wanna put some pressure on Clevo simply suggest people/yourselves from dishing out 4000-5000$ on their next flagship.
Show them that their enthusiast niche doesn't like being exploited, a company like clevo won't want to play it unsafe and potentially lose their already half bent towards MSI customers... Thats where they need to be hit to understand what their fanbase wants imo.TBoneSan likes this. -
As I said earlier post... Eurocom who advertise with upgradeability in their Eurocom models should hear the indignation from very very angry Clevo owners who bought their Clevo branded laptops only for 4-6 months ago. They need to know what we mean and tell it to Clevo!!
-
Not only eurocom, but every angry p870dm owner should do it to their resellers, keep in mind that they should request that Clevo hears about this.
They lose a few customers, you'll see that they'll release they're in no position to pull of stuff like this
-
To clarify, I was talking about the 700 series. The answer for the DM missing the connection is yes. For the ZM, we still do not know if the traces needed on the mb exist. If they do, then yes. If not, it is a DM and above card and ZM owners are SOL, although we know people have pulled over 150W on the mxm overclocking, so...

Well Myth's upgrade plan is an "upgrade" plan. As in they'll swap out my 780M SLI for 980M SLI should I wish to purchase it from them. I could send them the machine and they'd do it themselves etc. As for how it works NOW, I wouldn't know. But it's another rebrander that offers upgrade "plans", so I mentioned them. I don't think they can make 1080 SLI fit if it physically can't, but if they and Eurocom and HIDevolution make some uhh... requests... for upgrade paths for their cards, I guess that might make them copy a 1080 in the 180W 980 format? I couldn't really say for certain though; I simply meant that if you're going to tell companies to do something, pick all the ones who have out-of-spec upgrade plans (for example you're right in that I could get Sager to sell me a 480M kit for my D900F, but they wouldn't say... give me a 680M with it, but I could possibly get that at Eurocom or Mythlogic or something, as it's out-of-spec for that laptop though I have seen it work before)
-
I was just busting your chops, bro. I not going to stop being pissed about the bad decision to add a third proprietary GPU design to the mix and ruining the P870DM-G for current owners for a very long time. If they do not make a 1080 the size of the 180W 980 so I we can upgrade our existing machines to 1080 SLI I seriously doubt I will ever buy another Clevo (or probably any other high performance notebook) for the rest of my life. This one will likely be my last because I don't play 'let's shaft our customers' games like they're playing now. I work hard for my money and I don't appreciate getting screwed.electrosoft, steberg, TBoneSan and 3 others like this.
