    Umm what...?

I have been running 4K for awhile on both my laptop and desktop. I've had 980M SLI on the laptop and GTX 980 SLI on the desktop. Every game that supported SLI had really good scaling 80-90%+. I don't know why performance has been horrible for you (if you even game at actual 4K) but for me SLI scales well at 4K.

@johnksss @Mr. Fox I asked Octiceps to test the 368.69 drivers with his 980M and he claimed he could not increase his memory OC any further (he's banned on NBR for no real reason whatsoever so I'm just relaying what he says to you). He's using Windows 7 as far as I believe. If it helps, he doesn't have a Gsync-generation 980M. Of course others can test and return different things, I guess.

I don't play at 4K. 780M does not handle 4K nearly as well with any half-recent title for this. I was referring to videos of people testing games like Fallout 4, Witcher 3, etc. Low SLI scaling (not util % on each card, but actual aggregate improvement in FPS, such as going from 45fps to 55fps by adding a second card even if both cards show 99% util) is what I've seen in many videos testing SLI on these newer cards.

And again, note I'm talking about NEWER titles. Not older ones. Mass Effect 3? Black Ops 2? Dark Souls 2? Scales great. GTA V? Witcher 3? Fallout 4? Not so much.

I mean, you can do as you please. I'm just making sure you know what you'd be in for. =D.

Wonderful!!! :) :) :) so just a wait on price, further scores, tdp, and new heatsink. Hope that design offloads heat better... It'll be months before I can afford it anyways, so I'm in no rush.

    Once again, thank you...

probably need some wonky thermal pad solution added with smaller heatsinks for the extra mosfets like @GodlikeRU did -> http://forum.notebookreview.com/thr...-with-amd-100w-heatsinks.770916/#post-9919810

buy all the thickness thermal pad you need from this seller: http://www.ebay.com/itm/251735856827?var=550661983260 - he has 0.5 to 5mm pad

Why would they be out of luck if it's the same funky shape as they got before?

It's not as crazy as the GT72 cards shape.
We even used it in a P750DM...

    From the Notebookcheck the GT80 has the proper MXM3.0b ( 1, 2 & 3) while the GT80S has this wierd 130W shape ( 1, 2, 3 here the extension can be seen clearly & 4 ) did I miss something ?

    You are comparing GTX980M to GTX980. 980s don't come in b-format.
MSI 1070 Pascal format follows the later.

You could just stick a 980 into a GT80 and it would fit and work as it does in the GT80S. Only real difference is the heatsink.

I don't understand the last few posts.

It's been confirmed that P870 will acomodate 1080 cards, why's everyone so flamed up?

Let's just rejoice and have patience, we will surely be met with surprises this way :D

The NDA will be soon over and all of us will hear something fun, I have a feeling

Everyone is flamed up because the current 870DM does not appear to be able to be upgraded to the GTX1080 for notebooks in SLI. That is a bummer. i feel just like MR Fox and I refuse to go back to single GPU configurations no matter how powerful that GPU functions. From everyone links and post with some research the 870DM may not be an unpgradeable notebook as it was advertised to be by Eurocom and other resellers.

Anyone got side by side comparison of the P870DM and P775DM in terms of weight, shape and size and external ports please? AFAIK they're both 17 inchers but how come the P870 looks really bulky and heavy?

I was considering the new P7 series until recently leaked manual is pointing to SLI in the P8 .

Actually, if it is extended longer, which the picture I saw suggests it is, and the new unified heatsink I saw pictured is used (doesn't mean it is a Clevo, but it was unified, same layout as a 775, except with the larger gpu fan for the cpu side as well, and new design on heat pipes), then yes, it needs a new heat sink. Also, the picture suggested the vram on the other side of the die... Maybe the 775's would work, but I'm thinking it is a new heatsink, so set aside ~$125, give or take $25, in addition to the card itself. I could be wrong and the picture I saw could be something else entirely (it did have a six or eight pin connector, if memory serves), but looked to offload more cpu heat to the gpu side... All speculation, which with two weeks serves no point. All we need to know is we can upgrade, we might need a new heatsink, and our legend lives on! :)

Manufacturing the gpu boards into none standardized shapes just like what Asus did to some of their high end laptops, making me feel this has no difference with solder GPUs. I got mad and disappointed also since I just got my P870DMG one month ago and expecting to upgrade to Pascal, at least to the level of 1070 SLI. People in Chinese forum got irritated even more, when they just saw the pictures of the new graphics board, they were joking about sending sharp blades to Clevo's office.

I switched from my Dell M6800 workstation, to GT72S, and thought I finally found an ultimately machine P870. Then found out the BIOS is locked down to such a degree even though my Dell tablet has more options (with C states and hyper-threading config) than that. I have to hard code NVRAM variables to shut down the RSR and C states from throttling my CPU under single thread loads. Clevo this move really makes me want to give up the dream of ultimate performance laptop. I probably just get a x99~100 platform for work and have a portable laptop for moving in my next upgrade.

My doubt about your machines is the card width how does it fit in the chassis with that protrusion of the 130W format and the extension of the card also ? Sorry It's dumb but I can't figure it out from the pictures, Also the heatsink from the 775 how can you fit that into this when the chassis obstructs, Is it the card not that weird after-all ...

These 880M cards are not hard-modded. They are stock Dell GPUs with a special vBIOS Brother John let me borrow for testing. I'm overclocking them to 1200 on core and 1600 on memory. They won't do that with ordinary GeFarts cancer drivers.

    https://www.techinferno.com/index.p...fficial-thread/&do=findComment&comment=147400

I want to see how max overclocked 1080 SLI compares to my 980 SLI benchmarks. If it's not any better I will just say it doesn't matter and look to source a pair of 180W 980 GPUs at a good price once they are made obsolete by 1080. If 1080 SLI is substantially better, then I agree... they changed all the rules by making a goofball form factor 1080 GPUs instead of using a form factor we could use. I find it very difficult to believe that they could not use the form factor that was used by the 180W 980.

The machine itself is upgradable to single 1080, but that's just not good enough to make me happy. I bought it with a single 980 because it is a beast GPU with the intention of switching to SLI later on, as cash flow permits. I'm hoping they will surprise us with a 1080 with the same dimensions as the 180W 980, in which case I will be grateful and stop complaining about getting screwed. If they were able to make a desktop 980 in both form factors, I do not know of any legitimate reason they could not do the same with 1080. They're going to have to if they plan to do the right thing for their customers that blew a huge wad of cash on the P870DM-G. Had I known they were going to do what they have done, I never would have purchased a P870DM-G and I trust almost every current P870DM-G owner feels exactly the same way.

The placement for gpu is identical in the 700 series. Fan placement is different and motherboard support for the power pins is different. The room is there! Not only that, read back at it going to fit in the dm, which it's identically to the zm. If you are told it fits, take the person's word for it if they are trustworthy. It seems like many are too lazy to read the thread. If you compare the cutout part with the design of the extra long pcb mxm, it is the exact length as what we have. Hanging over the sides is doable out not too much. That being the case, the fit is there. You then ask about components on the card matching with the heatsink, thickness of pads, etc.

In other words, I don't care if you can visualize it. If that concerned, look at the longer cards of certain 980s, not the 200 watt version, then measure the space yourself. That will give you a better, more trustworthy answer since you haven't read the thread and do not believe me acting as a parrot...

actually if you look at the motherboard photo, one of the screws is still on it's place!

what they did is they moved the GPU chip, and that is a much bigger problem

Yes, they roughly did the equivalent of flipping over the 200W 980 PCB to point the other direction and moved the die, in addition to a bunch of other changes previously mentioned. I don't mind the need for new heat sinks, but making it impossible to fit two of them in SLI is playing dirty pool.

i dont know about p870dm possibilty to fit the new heatsink, but that would not be possible in the p775dm, because of the mxm port been moved too.

i am more concerneed that the 1060/1070/1080 card use same heatsink on p775dm3. that means its a dead end for using latest Clevo cards to upgrade older laptops, be it MSI, Alienware or Clevo.

if you have a 1080p screen, buying a 2nd 1080 is only going to burn a $2000 hole in your pocket

realistically, that 2nd 1080 is only useful for gaining a few extra points on 3dmark, imo, not worth your money

I'm not at all questioning anyone, I was just hoping that 3.0b standard machines that have the limited space do they have a chance at this or not, given the DM also the 3.0b one but the chassis and all factors, As I don't have the system I couldn't get an idea of that bolded part.

    Thanks.

The 770dm was the test subject. I have a zm. I already know it is the same space, same fans, and same heatsink in the 750/770dm/zm. There is an msi 1070 without pins that fits in the DM. That means all 700 series will have it. If they flipped the die and ram, then a new heatsink will be needed. Since that spans 4 machines, and the are calling it DM2 or whatever, it will likely span more, just like hm, em, sm and having to switch between amd heatsink and Nvidia heatsink. That being the case, a card and a heatsink. I'm in (once finances allow)...

Sorry for the tone, just tired of saying similar things in slightly different ways.

I am right there with you, bro. I hope so, too.

People used to say that about 980M SLI as well, but SLI is always substantially more performance where I consider it most important. Overclocked benching ranking is about 95% of the reason I even own high performance laptops. I'm a casual gamer so the price to performance ratio rationale doesn't carry any weight for me. And, 1080p is the only kind of screen I am interested it. I hate 4K and all it does it diminish my pleasure in owning a beast machine because I find having a 4K display to be a miserable experience.

Wait so if the 1070 follows the GT80 980 format does that mean we can fit two 980s as well in our P870DM or the 1070 has a similar but not exact same shape and we can fit two 1070s but not the two 980s?

The two 980s can fit inside the P870DM, @Mr. Fox even has benchmarks on that but it never went on sale though.

Cooling them is a big issue. Each 980 needs a beefy heat sink like the 200W version.

The ones we used for SLI in the Phoenix where Clevo 180W cards. Not the MSI 130W.

Wow, thank you for the confirmation @Prema . Did you use modified heatsinks too?

Pascal definitely runs cooler. My desktop with dual 1080's top out at 67c when benching and playing games. They are boosting to high 2040 and staying that cool. I haven't even put custom bio's on them yet. I just finished building the machine and will start tweaking it now. So pascal does run cooler so I don't see why they can't stick them on a mobile card with a decent heatsink. My 980ti's routinely ran at 78-85. This is all air not water yet. I always run my stuff on air for a while before putting them under water.

This was actually my thought process for buying the 870D so close to Pascal. Although not ideal, but if MSI keep their word there should be a 1080 created in a form factor that will fit without too much hassle (so long as they don't try anything funny).

    @pathfindercod

Are you comparing FE coolers? If so remember the Pascal coolers aren't the same as Maxwell...

As I said in a previous post, I was too between them but my gut feeling told me GT72S.

No the 980ti's were EVGA Classified cards and the 1080's are Strix OC edition cards.

I'm so glad I decided to wait for Pascal. That GTX1080 SLI build looks too good to be true. It may burn a hole in my pocket, but I can always buy new pants. Besides, that build looks like it would be future proof for a decent amount of time if SLI scaling ever gets back on track.

Does anyone know if Clevo will be offering options for higher refresh rates on their 4k monitors?
