The value of anything is in what you can make of it, and without the Series 200 motherboard chipset you can't even get that ;)

4 more PCIE lanes are included, and supposedly a higher top end on throughput to support Optane speed.

I would hope that bandwidth also can be used by M.2 PCIE x4 RAID0's to lift the top end limit on high speed PCIE x4 storage, making RAID0 worthwhile with the Series 200 chipset, unlike on the current 100 Series chipset where you hardly get any benefit going RAID0 with already top speed M.2 PCIE x4 SSD's.

It's still a big unknown, without specs or further description of benefits, which is typical while Intel is still selling the current generation chipset.

We won't know for sure until the Series 200 chipset is released.  o_O

This is disappointing if true, but I don't think this is confirmed as it doesn't make any sense for production sized solutions.
We talked about Intel and Micron's 3D XPoint storage a couple of times already. 3D Xpoint memory technology is the successor to standard NAND flash memory with an ETA likely in 2017. Intel will call this Storage series the Intel Optane SSD and it will be available in form factors like M.2/NGFF, SATA-Express, PCI-Express (card).

They will makes use of the new NVMe protocol. An early prototype was already demonstrated at IDF and would offer up-to 5.5 times the throughput of NAND flash-based DC P3700 series SSDs, (engineering sample and thus early development). Compared to the queue depth of just 32 commands for AHCI NVMe offers command queue depth of a 65,535 commands. Micron is the co-developer of 3D Xpoint so you may expect Crucial branded SSD drives on this technology as well.

New information has been spotted (net necessarily exciting) as Intel will release two Optane Memory 8000p products based on the new technology at launch, a 16GB and 32GB 3D XPoint storage unit is planned based on M.2 2280 and 2241 form factors. The units would thus use PCI-E 3.0 with two lanes according to Taiwanese website Benchlife. The 32 GB model would reach 1600 MB/s on reads and 500 MB/s on writes whereas the 16GB model would reach 1400 MB/sec and 300 MB/sec. IOPS reads are 300K and 285K respectively with 120K and 70K on writes. To be honest if this is true, then the results do disappoint a little as even the NVMe based Samsung 960 Pro can already reach 3500 MB/sec and 2100 MB/sec on writes (we have a review on the Samsung 960 Pro 1TB next week btw).

Currently there is no information about the actual controller, however we do know that you'll need a Kaby Lake processor and compatible chipset to be able to run these Optane Memory 8000p units. I don't know, these might be this first models, but somehow I guess we all expected way more from the prognosed performance ? Next to that the 16GB and 32GB volume sizes are simply way too small to be interesting on the consumer end side of things. Have a peek at the leaked info by clicking on the thumbnail below.
    https://www.guru3d.com/news-story/i...ered-in-16gb-and-32-gb-3d-xpoint-storage.html
What would make sense is that the test "mules" were small capacity, mainly due to a limited supply of test parts; for controller tuning and evaluation those small sizes would be considered "large enough".

Great stuff. That's what I always do as well with new systems...

Gather a ton of stock data. Stock clocks, stock fan profiles, run benches, record temps and do it all over again with Under Volting the CPU on stock clocks. It's nice to be able to see the contrast of, "straight out of the box data," vs "stock undervolt with minor tuning data."

It'd be great if you could post up your results with the recommended guidelines posted here.

    Looking forward to the results!

Sure thing bro. Personally, I like to see how a stock system performs under various conditions. Then I can truly see how my tuning affects temps and performance.

Found out why I'm in the "parts/product on order" status. @Donald@HIDevolution called me earlier to let me know my order is delayed while they wait for the 1TB SM961 to arrive mid next week. @AKHIL, are you waiting on this part too?

Well mine didn't ship yesterday. Here is to hoping it will ship today so that I can get it before I fly out on Monday night. Otherwise I'm going to have to do some creative negotiating with whomever is the carrier.

That is precisely the right thing to do. :) It is very rewarding for any owner of these beasts to see the contrast between stock and modded with it being tangible, which in my opinion makes one appreciate their machine even more.

Do you have on the day delivery tracking? Hitting the refresh every 30 seconds?

I just got an email from Larry at LPC with the tracking info. I assumed since their website didn't update that it didn't go out. Apparently it went out around 5:30 Pacific time last night.

Over here depending on the company they can let you know which hour your delivery will be and some let you see how many there are on the drivers route before you and how close they are :)

I'm UK based which meant I had a lovely tax bill to settle on delivery of my beast :( Had to write out a cheque for the first time in ages too as they did not have a card reader for those payments

UPS let me down over here for my delivery actually with the driver pretending they had delivered it because they could not meet the deadline of noon. I had to chase it down myself and get them to send the delivery driver to actually do the delivery that day.

I kept an eye on the tracking and at 11:53 noticed it marked at delivered (Deadline was 12:00 noon), knew for certain no attempt had been made. So I called the UPS UK number and told them to send the driver and make him deliver it or else basically then lodged a formal complaint against the driver who continued to lie to my face when it arrived.

I need to know from someone critical enough to tell me... how is the audio performance of the system. I travel and am not always going to use head phones. Watching news and doing other things in a hotel room, I don't want to have to put headphones on just to enjoy it.

I have heard the msi gt73vr and am pleased with what I heard. Just a reference for what I think is acceptable.

The audio, from the P870DM-G I have, is pretty good. It can fill up a medium size room with clear, crisp music but don't expect a lot of bass (if you're a bass head, it is a bit underwhelming). For videos, music and games, it gets the job done.

However, if you use it with an A/V receiver like I did for my party, it does come alive depending on your speaker quality.

The p870dm had the best audio of any machine I have owned. I would assume the dm3 is the same.

    I have owned many.

On a side note my dm3 status has not moved today, bummer.

That's good to know. I rock studio monitors from krk the 5 inch ones. So when I'm home it sounds like it'll be really nice. But I don't want to have to lug a speaker around. This thing is heavy enough already. Isn't it like 15 pounds with vapor cooler and a single power brick?

I also recall people saying that one brick isn't enough for a 6700k and 1080. Has anyone used a power meter at the wall and found out?

I have the P870DM2 with a 6700k and a 1080 and the single power brick is able to handle everything I throw at it. I have overclocked cpu and gpu.

I think the audio quality is really good, the best of any laptop I have heard. It's the same as the P870DM, which I previously owned.

The inbuilt audio is loud and clear while the headphones jack uses a true sabre hifi DAC implementation. No gimmicks or re-badges it sounds good and auto detects the kind of headphones (normal or high impedance) measures them and auto sets.

You simply won't find better in a notebook.

I have one question, do you know if i can get uncompressed 5.1 sound from the jacks. I know i can use HDMI for it but if the HDMI is connected to projector, i need something else. In some old laptops you could use combination of adiuo jacks to get 5.1 (PCM) sound, but i dont know about this model.

Its not a huge deal because i can always use SPDIF but that will be compressed (AC3, DTS or Dolby) and will not work with most games without third party support.

I'm looking into doing some testing on my heat sink contact pressure and was planning on using the Fujifilm Prefilm Ultra Low (28-85 psig). Does anyone have any experience with this brand or any others.

Also, what types of shims have people used. I know I saw a post a while back, but I can't find it right now because I'm on my phone.

Well that doesnt explain if it is compressed or uncompressed. SPDIF cannot do uncompressed 5.1 or 7.1. It can do max 2.1 on PCM. Unless, they have a mode where they can re configure the different ports from software to different channels, and then maybe we can use some stereo to RCA cables to get PCM.
I will try to find out more details about it. You just cant rely on advertisements claims these days. I have seen companies claiming 5.1 support through dolby prologic too, which is a fake 5.1.

Great, just great. Just when I thought I was decided I come across this keyboard thing. Guess I'll have to see what alienware is up to. I don't mind bga so much. Keyboard and screen really are supposed to be top notch. The two things you interact with the most on a laptop. If one cares about that sort of thing, which I do.

well if think about it, what do you do most on your laptop? type!!!!! it is freakin' important.

Others here think I am just nit picking but I till this date cannot type normally without making many mistakes and using Google Chrome to correct my mistakes and it's been 7 months since i've owned this laptop

    See my post here: http://forum.notebookreview.com/thr...rom-hidevolution.795001/page-25#post-10367229

Mr. Fox convinced me to keep my order in this post: http://forum.notebookreview.com/thr...rom-hidevolution.795001/page-25#post-10367237

    then read this please: http://forum.notebookreview.com/thr...rom-hidevolution.795001/page-29#post-10367461

I ended up keeping my order as there is nothing even close to the performance / components of this laptop. I had to make a compromise and what a big one this was

Factory performance really is a bad joke, DOOM wildly swings between more than 120 and less than 30 fps. Can't wait to repaste.
