It will function with one up to 440W. At which time it will promptly shut off.

thanks Johnkss, as I imagined.. however 440W is a good level before the shutoff, I don't think I'll reach it too frequently
-
That is hardly modular...
It's BGA, it's performance is mostly lower than P870, and it's water cooled with that huge package in back.
I want to design a water cooled laptop from one piece at some point, with the water cooling going under it - using a block module for water cooling and contact with thermal paster with the module - eventually changing the entire module.
The problem is again, the heat and the size of the cooling needed to cool it off.afloyd likes this. -
Is that the rating on the specs or just from personal experience, and is that from the wall or output power?

Just as john said ti will work and for reference a single 1080 with 6700k at stock speeds pull right at 300 watts out of the wall +/- 10 watts. FYI. About the same the DM1 did with 980m SLI.temp00876, Johnksss and Spartan@HIDevolution like this. -

@clayton006 @Georgel
To be fair, we had a true desktop replacement before.
X7200 housed a 6-core 980X and dual 480Ms back in 2010?
P570WM was a full socket 2011 based monster that could hold two MXM 3.0b GPUs.
I owned a P570WM with a proper 10-Core Xeon CPU.
I think @Johnksss@iBUYPOWER still has his and it has a 8-core unlocked Xeon with dual 980Ms.
Socket 2011 had up to 12-core Xeons with 150W TDP CPUs.
Socket 2011-3 has 140W 6/8/10-Core i7s and Xeons up to 22-cores. I don't see why we couldn't have a Alienware 18 sized 17-inch P570WM thick successor with dual 1080s and a 2011-3 socket CPU.
But I'm sure like mentioned before is definitely cost. And not only that, the P570WM didn't sell much. Only a small amount of people bought it.
Makes sense why Clevo would make something like the P870DM series instead. -
If you buy a 1080p g sync panel, do u have to change the eDP cable to upgrade to 4K at a later point ?

Whats the point of getting this over a desktop?
-
I'm using my laptop at work. During times where it's dead and I don't have homework I can play at work.
I can take my laptop to my friends house, along with multiple xbox one controllers, hook it up to their tv and play games.
When I get home I just plug in a few wires and my laptop is now my desktop hooked up to my monitor, speakers, mouse/keyboard, etc.
I guess you can say portability and having power on the go is a main factor. -
I'm very much sure you could engineer a cooling system for this and it would be high quality. That was never a question of mine.
I would be careful with using words like "No one will buy" or "weigh too much". Those are broad statements and over generalizing. Sure, there would be very few people that would buy this, but I wouldn't say no one would.
Not sure how we got down this road. This was more off an off comment / dream not something I reasonably expected. Let me address the cost breakdown of how I would see this playing out.
The total price of my NP9873 (1080 SLI, QHD 120hz, No storage, 16GB ram, 3% cash discount) when I am done will be:
Base price: $3867
Two 960 Pro 2TB drives (when available): $2600
Two 950 Pro 2TB (installed): $1640
64GB Ram (Installed): $330
Total: $8437
I'm assuming if ever a product were created with an 8-core option it would fall under this price point. Then I would have to purchase the ram and storage (or move it from this machine to the new one). Point is, I'd be willing to pay. And I'd be willing to carry something that weighs 17+ pounds plus adapters. I used to walk into work each day with a 9.5 pound MSI GT72s, 13" retina macbook pro, 12.9" iPad Pro, Surface Pro 4, two Xbox one controllers, two 96wh lithium batteries, and chargers and cables for everything. The bag weighed close to 40lbs when all of my misc gear was added to that.
So am I crazy? Probably. Point is, there would be people who would pay dearly to take their workstation class desktop on the road with them.
I'd be willing to purchase an x99 laptop with an 8-core (read not a 10 core) CPU for around 5k-7k depending on configuration. I also don't need dual video cards if thermals are a problem. Do I need 8-cores or more? Yes for my purposes the more cores the better. Do I need more than 64 GB of ram? Yes for my purposes the more ram the better.
Do I know that this is NOT going to happen? Of course I know it isn't. The whole point for me bringing this up was just a thought exercise. Yeah I really want it and I know it won't happen. Doesn't mean that I can't dream about it!1nstance, salvafxr, Papusan and 1 other person like this. -
Thank u for this, can i copy and paste this to sum up an argument after getting flamed for choosing this laptop on PCBuild subreddit? XD
I travel alot, and i figured it would be useless to not being able to use my desktop half a year (shipping costs alot) for gaming.
Next thing they say, battery life sux, desktop is better. But form factor is marginal between a mini itx desktop and laptop, i would get the same laptop without battery and it would look significant in my eyes.
+: Im kinda ranting since i kinda felt irrational for going with a decent laptop.Papusan, clayton006 and GTVEVO like this. -
By all means.
Oh and battery life sucks? I can get two hours doing web browsing/music/word processing.
In gaming I can get about 45 minutes-1 hour which is about how much you are supposed to get. The point of a gaming laptop is being able to take it anywhere. Obviously you will take the ac adapter as well. If you do need battery you get around two hours which isn't bad for a machine this powerful.
A desktop does not have a battery, not to mention if power fails, there goes everything. On our laptops if power fails we still have our batteries. On a desktop you need a UPS.
I wouldn't bother with a desktop with anything less than single Titan X or SLI Titan X, because I can just get a laptop with two 1080s. I wouldn't want a desktop with components a laptop can hold.
I've given up on arguing the point of gaming laptops, haters gonna hate. Let them. When people factor in a desktop they need to factor in audio, mouse, keyboard and monitor as well because a laptop has all these built in.
I recently sold my desktop to build another laptop:
Desktop: i7 5820K @ 4.5Ghz | 32GB 2400Mhz | 500GB SSD | 2TB HDD | AMD Fury X | EVGA SuperNova 1300 G2 | Corsair 750D
Laptop: i7 6700K @ 4.6Ghz | 16GB 2400Mhz | 512GB NVMe M.2 | 500GB SSD | 2TB HDD | 2x nVidia GeForce GTX 1080 SLI | 17.3" 2560x1440 120Hz Display | 2x330w AC Adapters -
Thanks
. I was using the same values but my laptop kept crashing. I changed the voltage to 1.25. now everything working fine. so far so good

Thank you! Im coming from 6700k Node 202 build with 1080 aswell, 380 dollars one way cargo shipping (to each country everytime = ~700 :/), most airlines have limited what u can take on hand luggage since they claim no responsibility and things get stolen very often apparently. Also even if i got chromebook and cut gaming each 3 months I think the extra 500-600 bux compared to desktop is kinda worth it for filling that time in these months. i think it would probably be useless for locals. +1 on being able to play at work and attend friend's house (which i do alot for f1 2016 (with the node 202 tho screen was really bulky)
)

I think i'm going for EVOC P870DM3 [1080, 64gb ram and 6700k) with the vapor chamber heatsink if possible, should I order it with delid option? (overclocker by blood lol) Or get the delid tool tho costs almost the same to do. Should I get another adapter for oc? Heard the stock adapter can handle extra 100 watt is it true? I'm also preparing this for future vbios unlock if possible.
-
My laptop is also based off of the P870DM3. I ordered my barebones from HIDEvolution.
I definitely recommend the P870DM3 with i7 6700K, 2560x1440 120Hz display and single 1080. Dual 1080 is you can do it.
I wouldn't worry about the vapor chamber heatsink if you will only have a single 1080. In a couple of months, a full upgrade kit can be bought that includes everything you will need to add a second 1080.
Also I feel that the single GPU cooling is good as it is. As for delidding, I did mine myself using a rockit delid tool but I think HID offers a $50 service which isn't bad and will definitely bring your temps down and you get to keep your CPU warranty with HID.
Single AC will be enough for 1080 + 6700K overclocked. -
Spartan@HIDevolution Company Representative
If you delid it yourself, you void the CPU's warranty. Let HIDevolution delid it for you that way you keep the warranty intact -
No ratings, No specs. Just personal experience with using 6 of these particular adapters.
That is from the wall or in my case. The UPS that measures the draw from the laptop.Papusan likes this. -
440W is the maximum shut off. Anything before that is either to much voltage, not enough voltage, to many watts for the amps used and so forth.

This is why it's so frustrating that NBR's own image hosting is currently flaky.
That flakiness is forcing people to use outside image hosting services that may at any time disappear - like postimage.com , taking with them key image information used to help people here on NBR.
The best form for posting images is to host on the site posted, so the images move with the site if it ever moves. And, backup images used as part of your own personal backup regime.
Is there anything we can do to help NBR make image hosting here stable again?
Now would be a good time to fix NBR image hosting so people can feel confident moving off external services and back to NBR.Last edited: Oct 29, 2016Ashtrix, Spartan@HIDevolution, Donald@Paladin44 and 2 others like this. -
I pointed this out to @Phoenix and I'll point it out to you too mate... ARE YOU INSANE? Spending $2600 on 2 2TB M.2 SSDs? Do you need that much storage? M.2 is a total rip off... Get a bigger 2.5" SSD...
Also I think you mean 2TB 850 Pro... I still think it's insane to spend 1.6k on that but hey your money... God knows what stuff your storing on your laptop but I'm quite sure you can live with probably 2 1TB 2.5" SSDs and 2 950/960 pros which are 512GB for whatever your using that laptop for... Get a HP Microserver like I did to store your excess stuff.. That thing costs like £120 after cashback and WD Red drives are going for around £100 for a 4TB one..Ashtrix, temp00876, Georgel and 1 other person like this. -

Oh btw, @Mr. Fox, @TBoneSan , @Phoenix , @Papusan. @ssj92 I went to MCM Comic Con in London today and guess what I saw?
GUESS GUESS lol...
It was ALIENWARE... They had a massive stand with their new turdbooks... Played on a new 17 R4 with 6700HQ+GTX1070... Had CS GO running... Screen looked all good etc but wonder why they didn't have more strenuous games running on them.. Thinner than older Alienwares too... The worst thing was that the damm turdbook's keyboard had so many bloody macro keys, though the Clevo keyboard was cramped, the Alienware one is now just as cramped...
They had some ROCCAT mouse which had 12 side buttons, bloody irritating.. My G602 has 6 and that's bad enough lol..
So the new Aurora, supposedly more compact but looked very proprietary and Overpriced.. They had some dell 1440p monitors, some great colours but wonder what model they were...
Ohh on a more cheery note, I saw a £20 000 limited edition desktop..
Has 6700K + 32GB DDR4 RAM + 6950X + 64GB RAM + 3 Titan XPs + Custom Water Cooling Loops etc + Custom milled case...

If anyone is going to be buying the 2TB M.2 960s for storage I recommend the 4TB SATA 2.5" 850 Evo for storage instead. Price is similar and you get 2x the storage. Of course a 2TB HDD is even cheaper.
LOL what? It has a socket 1151 6700K AND a socket 2011-3 6950X?
Looking at the picture it's the 6950X

Perhaps there was a reason they used the new TURDBOOK 17 R4 with 6700HQ for gaming on the MCM Comic Con stand? If they rather showed off AW 15R3, would Dellienware showcased a machine that is massive damaged. As the picture below. Maybe Dell cherry picked the AW 17R4 for gaming on the stand?
Another one as well

It's not a waste of money if I need local fast storage while I'm on the road. Also the endurance of the 850 evo 4tb is abysmal for the size.
There is a reason I need that speed and the size. Just like what you think is a waste is something that I see value in.
And yes, I meant 850 2tb drives in my earlier post.

What do you guys think about single 780W AC Adapter for P870DM3? More or less the same size as current 330W just 780W. Perfect for Overclockers.
-
Same size as 330w? That's already pretty slim, for it's wattage.
Is the 780w specially outfitted with a cooler, or enclosed / encased with built in cooling?
Or, how is it possible to double the wattage in the same space and still dissipate 2x the heat reliably?
Heavier? Cost?Last edited: Oct 29, 2016 -

Yes there will be 2 internal fans inside for cooling, LED to display power consumption, power switch so you can turn AC Adapter off when not used. We will publish specs and pics in few days. -
Is there a preorder list/ETA? I'm 100% getting one.

That sounds like a sweet design / set up.

More details are coming in few days once we complete field testing. Lab testing are done already. -
Are the fans loud? Are the fans able to spin up or down with more or less usage / heat?
-
I love almost everything about my P870DM3 except that it throttles the CPU during SLI. I know the only way to fix that is to have Prema's Bios and I won't get it since I got my machine from XoticPC. I think it may have to go back...bummer.
-
I think I figured out why SLI is disabled whenever I reboot my machine. I think it is because Windows switches the Power Plan from Performance back to Balanced. So I'm going to have to delete the other Power Plans.
