I wonder if it's possible to order 1080 single with large vapor chamber hsf? So later you can just drop in another 1080 + sli cable if needed.

The question is whether you must have it plugged in to boot or not. If you do, MSI cards are what I'm buying...

I've ordered myself a nice pair of 8GB ddr4 3000mhz G.Skill sodimms

I wonder what this monstrosity will achieve with Prema unlocked BIOS& vBIOS...
-
Not really. Since hes not forcing it on in-compatible hardware.
That is weird, might want to re install DisplayCAL and prevent any other tools from managing profile loading.

Yeap, try enabling Show Advanced options under the Options tab.
Or try uninstalling i1profiler, if that fixes it then it was the i1Profiler thats managing profiles and causing the issue.ajc9988 likes this. -

i was told by Clevo that the single gpu 1080 gtx model comes with that same heasink. -
nice
maybe by the end of year I will buy another GTX1080 + sli cable
for now only single card first~
I know @Mr. Fox is a big advocate of SLi, but I'll see how well they're implemented in games before spending money on a 2nd cardLast edited: Aug 10, 2016 -
Those @Meaker@Sager linked are 8GB each. Those that I and @Phoenix have are 16GB each. I have 2 x 16GB and I think he has 4 x 16GB sticks.Georgel, Spartan@HIDevolution and bloodhawk like this.

So, that won't work for the first version of the P870DM. Unless I am missing something, there is no heat sink available to fit a single 1080 in the machine I and many others have. One would have to build their own heat sink from scratch and the 200W 980 heat sink won't fit because the PCB's "L" is pointing in the opposite direction. Unless @Prema has some information he can share at the appropriate time, we will remain up the feces creek with no paddle with our dead-end product unless Clevo is planning to release a special P870DM-G 1080 single GPU upgrader heat sink for current owners.
-
There is a T heat sink like the one we already have, just slightly beefier.
-
So, how it that going to fit? Is the new "T" heat sink a special creation for upgrading existing machines? If not, that still won't work for us.
You'd have to ask yourself... Did the master MXM slot stay in exactly the same position and the slave MXM slot moved away from it? Or did both move and spread apart from one another? I think their ONLY option was to move the master MXM slot and the slave MXM slot stayed in exactly the same place because in an SLI machine the slave GPU has literally nowhere to go. The SLI bridge cable almost touches the part of the chassis between the GPU and battery. That being the case, I still think we are screwed unless a person is willing to settle for 1070 and that would suck big time. Nobody in their right mind buys a machine like this to be frozen in second place. I still think unless Clevo releases yet another version of 1080 on the 180W 980 PCB we are left for dead... unless MSI turns out to be our knight in shining armor with a GPU for the 1080 SLI Titan that we can use for upgrades using 980M SLI heat sinks. -

i think that is a T heatsink, though i have'nt asked. i have asked what is the cooling solution for single 1080 and was told its exactly same heatsink as for dual card system. -
tanzmeister Notebook Evangelist
why not? perhaps i am missing something -
I guess that must be for a new system that ships with a single 1080 and not an upgrade to a pre-Pascal machine.bloodhawk likes this.
-
The fans seem to be in the exact same position, so the T part is the same. Since the L shape has been flipped on the card, the heat sink covers that. Also the 4 holes seem to match. Cant really post the picture for obvious reasons , but the old and new T heat sinks superimposed , only difference seems to be the flipped shape and one of the motherboard screws not matching.ajc9988 likes this.

If the master MXM slot is in a different spot (which it has to be) the heat sink will fit the GPU but not the chassis. It will not line up with the place it needs to be. There was no space available for moving the slave MXM slot. So, like I said, unless they make a special new heat sink for the purpose of allowing existing P870DM-G owners to add a single 1080 we're still screwed.ssj92 likes this.

got pics?
-
Yeap, because the dual card heat sink adds a seriously significant amount of weight. So people have an option specially if they are running only 1 card.
-
It cannot work. Think about it... the master MXM slot is not in the same place on the motherboard in the new machine as the old machine. If the part of the heat sink that fits the chassis is put in place the GPU will be in the wrong spot. If the part of the heat sink that fits the GPU is put in place, it would not line up with the chassis. I have seen the superimposed picture and at this point I still don't see any way it can work because the master GPUs are in totally different positions in relationship to the chassis.
-
It will
From the picture the new heat sink is offset a bit to the left to keep the 4 core screws matched up. And one of the motherboard screw holes is in the same place. Everything from MXM slot and going up matches up perfectly.ajc9988 likes this. -
I still don't see how, since the master GPUs and MXM slots are in totally different positions on the new and old machines. But, I guess we will wait and see what happens when someone actually tries it. I hope I am wrong for the sake of people willing to settle for a single 1080. Hopefully, they would not end up stuck with parts that won't fit and cannot be returned without a restocking fee penalty.
-
From what I've seen and read, the T heatsink is solely for the first generation and maybe DM2. The plate heatsink is DM3, regardless of SLI or not. This would make sense as the better heatsink with a single card gives them more notoriety. Meanwhile, the T replaces the same design on the original.
Sent from my SM-G900P using TapatalkMr. Fox likes this. -
Now, yes... that would make sense if it is made specifically for a machine with the MXM slot in exactly the same place as our machines. Perhaps that is the difference between DM2 and DM3. One of which cannot accept two 1080 GPUs. But, that would be just as retarded as what I am already stuck with. A person would have to be an idiot to buy the DM2 if it is a dead-end (no 1080 beast SLI) product like my machine.
-
The position isnt all that different, it slightly offset to the left, by 1/4th of an inch. And the heat sink accounts for that. Specially since they have not changed anything else other than the MXM slot positioning and a little bit of the frame standoff(s) positioning.
-
Spartan@HIDevolution Company Representative
-
If it was moved by only 1/16th of an inch it still would not fit. There is no wiggle room for those difference. Imagine your current machine. Move the GPU to the left and leave the heat sink in the same spot... no dice... cannot work. Close is good enough for government work, but not for this. It has to be exact.
But, I do think @ajc9988 might be onto something with differences between DM2 and DM3. It would have to be made for a machine with internal dimensional specification identical to ours with respect to the positioning of the master MXM slot in relationship to the chassis. -
Look at it this way, you keep the top half the same , and bend the bottom half to the left while keeping the screw positions. Since the new cards are practically flipped over.Mr. Fox likes this.
-
I don't think we have clear understanding of the differences between DM2 and DM3 and that might be the reason it will work. A DM2 may have the master GPU in exactly the same spot as our machines. If so that would work perfectly and will be a godsend for folks willing to drop a grand or more on one MXM card upgrade. The DM2 might be a creative way for Clevo to sell off their surplus obsolete parts from the DM-G.ajc9988 likes this.

So...what I said might turn out to be true regarding DM2 and DM3?
Whereas DM2 is basically our current P870DM and supports single 1080, 1070 SLI.
DM3 is the new design we have seen where the master MXM slot is moved to the left and supports 1080 SLI?
Otherwise I'm with Mr. Fox on this one. If the master mxm slot was moved how can we use one heatsink to accommodate both the P870DM and the newer models?ajc9988 likes this. -

Agreed... 16GB is plenty. I only have 32GB of the DDR4-3000 because 16GB sticks is what was available. I only bought 2 sticks because I don't have any need for 64GB... spending extra money with no performance benefit to be realized is not a good plan in my personal opinion.ajc9988 likes this.

I definitely agree with these two! I need 32GB, but I push the limits of 16GB regularly (15.4GB+)... But 64GB is a waste if you are not doing something that needs it...

Unless they did something to the battery and chassis there was no place to move the slave MXM slot. With a dual GPU setup the slave card almost touches the part of the chassis next to the GPU where the battery screws down. The SLI bridge cable actually makes contact with the chassis as it loops underneath the GPU. After you connect the SLI bridge to the master, there is a minuscule air space between the SLI bridge and chassis, plus there is even an offset in the chassis to make room for the SLI bridge. So, the only option I can see would be leaving it in place and moving the master slot.tanzmeister likes this.
