Did you follow my pad guide? What does the contact pattern look like when you remove the heatsink?

I have your pad guide blown up on my 4k display while I did this work.

I'm not having issues with memory stability or power delivery, only the GPU core temp (which, unless I'm mistaken, wouldn't be too much impacted by having the thermal pads contacting the VRAM, MOSFETs, and VREGs, which would cause instability or crashing). Your guide said something about 10cm X 10cm pads which I believe is a typo, so when I got 30cm X 30cm I had to reuse some of the green pads, and use EK thermal pads for the VRAM. I do plan on ordering a new set of 100cm X 100cm of .5 and 1.0 when they are both back in stock at performance PCs

When I remove the GPU heatsink it appears that the thermal paste is on both sides reasonably well. Is there something I'm looking for?

With all of this testing I'm using the Heavensward benchmark at at 4k DSR the GPUs are mostly at 89-99%. Putting the cover on did start getting the temps into the 82c range.

Dropping this back down to native resolution at 2560x1440 has the GPUs between 65-96% and the temps (with the cover on) are a little lower at 80c for GPU1 and 75c for GPU2. Obviously the temps are down due to the utilization being lower.

I guess my question is, am I at risk of frying these GPUs at 85c? Of course I'd rather have them lower like some are in the high 60's, but at this point that seems impossible.

What's is your ambient temperature like ?
Also is your laptops back raised up a bit when your are running heavy loads?

If you would better if you are able to post a picture of the heatsink right after your take it off.

80-85 is normal for full load on both GPUs.

I order my pads in 10cmx10cm sheets and then cut out the shapes as needed.

The pad guide is not to improve VRM contact, the standard pads do that fine but to lower the contact.

Any chance of a picture of the contact pattern? I can have a look and make sure it seems ok.

Generally the laptop is raised up on all fours on a stand when I run it period so there is about an inch gap (if not more) underneath. For the testing in my more recent posts I have the laptop upside down so there is no issue with airflow.

My ambient temperature in my basement is somewhere between 68-70 degrees F (if it was "C" we'd have a big problem....)

Oooooo.... well..... now I feel like a stooge.... Looks like I'll need to order new pads and try it again....

If I order a 100 x 100 sheet of the .5 will that be enough for even the spots that I need to double up on, or should I order two of them? The 1.0mm pads are out of stock...

Is there a set where you can order both? So long as they are reasonable and a bit squishy they do the job just fine, many layers start to decrease performance a fair bit.

Otherwise two sets of 0.5mm would do the job area wise.

I'm going to order one of the 100x100 0.5mm, one of the 100x100 1.5mm, and two of the dual 120x20 1.0mm pads. This should be enough to cover both GPUs?

You don't need much 1.5mm, only a single tab of that will be enough.

    I think I ended up doing 2 of the .5mm, 1 of the dual 120x20 1.0mm and 1 of the single 120x20mm 1.5mm pads

That sounds like it should be plenty, if you store them in a cool, dark place they can last a decent amount of time for future playing too :)

I'm having the same temps trouble with my 1080's, did pretty much what @claytoon006 did, change pads, repaste with gelidEX, and no luck. Firestrike stress test eventually reach 90C and even playing overwatch with gsync disabled...always max fan

Again can you post contact patterns and share clock graphs? This helps identify what is going on.

I'm going to use the thinner pads on all parts instead of just a few and see if I can get better contact.... If you try the Unigne Valley benchmark on loop what type of temps do you get? Also raising the laptop up a bit or flipping it over for testing (if you have an external display) can help.

I also removed all the junk foil off the bottom plate as it restricts airflow quite a bit.

By sharing clock graphs.... do you mean the graph from the afterburner tool or something else (like GPU clocks from HWinfo64)?
I'll wait to do another repaste and pads when I can get a delidded 7700k.

    Easiest way to test contact.
Take out heatsink, take out GPU. Put thermal pads on the GPU ,screw on heatsink and check from all corners, what is and what isn't making contact. Compensate accordingly.

Once everything is set and decided, install GPU back, apply Thermal pads and TIM, screw heatsink on.

If I want to know what my system is doing I run intel XTU and MSI afterburner side by side, I match up the two graphs and I can see what each chip is doing clock/usage wise. Otherwise you are trying to figure out what is wrong with a car without being able to touch it.

The foil is removed out of the box, HID does it, i Will try putting thinner pads, from the corners it looks like everything is in place, but i didn't take out the GPU and applyed the pads over the heatsink. I'll do an ungine valley loop and post the result. Thanks for the tips by the way.

When I pulled the heatsink off, only one VRAM memory pad was stuck to the underside of the heatsink, the rest seemed like they hadn't made "much" contact.

That should not be happening to a stock delidded processor.
Do your fans ramp up to max when you when the processor is at those temperatures ?

Just to confirm no OC on the processor ? Also what are is your ambient temperature like?
Either ways, I would get in touch with HIDE.
My non delidded processor never got that hot at stock. With Ambient at about 25C.

All stock. Ambient temp around 26C, it will be a real problem for me to shipp the laptop back. I'm not from the usa and i have to use proxy shipping Because customs laws here are very hard. Shipp the laptop would be my last resort, i'll try everything i can first.

Well the first step would be to check how hot only the processor gets. I would run something like WPRIME 1024M to see how high the temperatures go.

For anyone who was wondering if the P870DM3 had anything to legitimately fear from the Acer 21x:

    https://www.cnet.com/products/acer-predator-21x/preview/

They finally released the specs... $9,000 and a BGA i7-7820HK 45 W processor. I literally laughed out loud.

Looks like the P870DM3 is still the most powerful mass-produced laptop money can buy. And waaay better pricing.

Clevo may have its issues, but thank goodness they give us better options than Acer.

Any rough ideas on when a BIOS / EC update may be coming around for 7700k support in our laptops? I know firm dates probably aren't possible but I plan on purchasing from silicon lottery this weekend.

I saw some actual benchmarks earlier. It seems the 7700K only has better IMC and less voltage for clockspeeds. I don't even think it runs cooler with all that voltage dropped.

What boggles my mind is that this laptop has of much real estate available and yet they combined track pad and numpad just to make it fancy
This laptop just screams useless style over substance.

It's an exact copy of MSI's touchpad/numpad design. Honestly, I'd rather have the numpad than the touchpad and a small trackpoint somewhere, since you're probably using an external mouse anyways.

They created something 'original' there I give them that! Same as Asus with their water-cooling.
Too bad about sticking to the mass market philosophy of low powered BGA components while designing a monster at a price tag which can not be justified by those masses. Leaving the enthusiast high and dry.
