They could have done so much with this 21inch laptop idea. It could have been a dream laptop for somebody like me if they had made it similar to P870DM3. Heck iam sure they could have accommodated a full internal water cooling system inside that real estate.
    So much wasted potential.

Hello all I would like to give you my first impressions on my new EVOC P870DM3

To start I'd like to say that I hope there will be a quick conclusion to the events that have occurred at @hidevolution. My heart goes out to you guys.
    My Build - http://forum.notebookreview.com/thr...aptop-from-hidevolution.799248/#post-10417180
I must have been good this year - Santa delivered my gift right on Christmas Eve!

The following is based on a right-out-of-the-box unmodified/untweaked/unbenchmarked rig. When I have the time (hopefully soon) I can get to optimizing this beast! Until then, here goes...

This baby is big! Heavy, solid, sturdy and makes my wife's MacBook Air seem like a featherweight tablet. I don't plan on taking this around with me so it was a good match for my needs which was a true desktop replacement without the compromises that a thinner, lighter and more portable laptop has (thermals, noise, power etc...)

Upon first boot found that HIDevolution installed Win 10 Pro. Thanks!

The Screen and Performance: Let's cut to the chase - Are there horizontal lines on the screen? Yes. Are they a problem - yes and no. I am a surely a "once I see it, it can't be unseen" type of a guy so I was expecting the worst. Close up they are definitely noticeable especially against a gray or darker background. However I sit about 20 inches from the screen and the lines disappear and become a non-issue. Also the more time I spend in front of the computer I feel like my eyes adjust. It's not and should not be a deal-breaker if you are considering this build in my opinion. The screen itself is nice and bright and I found the colors to be on point and accurate. I did pay for monitor calibration.
But gaming! A 1440p 120Hz screen paired with a 1080 and 6700K is practically a religious experience. My desktop rig has a 1080p 60Hz monitor and a 780Ti and the difference is like night and day. Everything looks, well, buttery smooth. Motion is fluid with no tearing or stuttering. The screen is nice and bright. Outdoor scenes like in HITMAN are sharp and crisp. The inky black space of Battlefleet Gothic: Armada is dark and rich. Battlefield 4's destructible environments look almost movie-like. Playing them all on the highest resolutions produces nary a hiccup. I have MGS V and Total War: Warhammer on deck - I can't wait!

The Speakers: Decent. Not exactly hi-fi, which is to be expected, but they do the job. The bass is a little difficult to hear in some situations, but I find the Soundblaster software helps a lot bringing out the lower tones. Plugging in headphones, however, is a totally different story. I purchased a set of Kingston HyperX Cloud IIs cans and the sound through them is nothing short of amazing. Whether using the headphone jack (for the SB software to work, if you like) or the USB dongle (for virtual 7.1) is an incredible listening experience. Because I do my gaming late at night I use my headphones exclusively.

Fans: Practically silent when surfing the web or doing ordinary tasks. If there's any type of background noise such as an open window there are no worries. However, when under load with a demanding game I will say that I found the fans loud. They ramp up to speed quickly and stay there for the duration. I am surprised that even with the fans at their loudest I feel that not a lot of heat is coming out! I have had no heat related issues at all. Remember I have not tweaked any fan control settings yet so the fan volume should change for the better with a little tuning.

The Keyboard: Many users consider the keyboard the weakest link of the Clevo/Sager line. All I can say that it's decent. I am still a two finger hunt-and-peck typer so accuracy and speed really don't apply. Your mileage may vary.

One thing bothers me - the fingerprint reader is wonky. I cannot get Windows Hello to complete my fingerprint registration. Eventually I would like to log in to my computer via my prints. Whether this is a software/driver/hardware issue is yet to be determined.

Thanks for your time with this long post. I just wanted to get it out there that I love my EVOC and plan on getting many years of gaming bliss out of it.

    Regards,
    modernunlimited

Expecting my 870DM3 to be delivered by end of day Saturday.

Is there any particular order and version of drivers and software that needs to be followed after the OS install ?

With wifi off (so windows doesn't update drivers as I am installing them myself) I usually start with the chipset drivers(and intel ME and RS if you choose to use those), moving on to video and audio, then card reader etc. Basically from what I consider most important/core drivers to the secondary less important items.

It is up to you if you want to include the CCC and XTU or not. There is a known issue with the stock CCC install, and there is a specific way you can install it without XTU. Some of us have chosen to not install it at all.

Basically you lose the ability to change backlighting colors (yay for awesome blue and green being default at least) and inability to turn on max fan from an external keyboard (that one bugs me as my laptop is not within reach so I have to get up and down all the time when turning them on and off now).

Even worse... 9999 Euro = 10 539.41 US Dollars for this BIG smartphone. Crazy . A very high price to pay for this 21X curved screen http://www.guru3d.com/news-story/acers-predator-21-laptop-with-curved-screen-costs-9999-euro.html
You can get a better deal other places if you are in short for a bigger external screen or https://www.acer.com/ac/en/US/content/group/monitors :D https://www.amazon.com/Acer-Predator-UltraWide-Widescreen-X34/dp/B016GNX4SE

A meaningless comparison. What good is to compare new vs. old chips with only a fixed voltage? Cook for clock!! Is the only right thing to do. This reviews is a JOKE

At least it's better than most others out there.
Plus he did touch upon, the fact that clock for clock they are pretty much the same.

I'm sure most of them are bound by Intel's TnC's.

So since my laptop died recently I am planning on ordering one of these soon. I have decided on almost everything but the screen (either 3k or 4k). I have heard that lines appear on the 3k screen. Is it easily ignored or something more visible? My apologies if this is the wrong place to ask.

If it's for gaming the 3k 120hz is a no brainer in my opinion. I have the 3k and the lines are visible up REAL close. I don't notice them nor does their apparent visibility bother me the least. It's a beautiful display. That's simply my testimony :)

Interesting that they see a market for this though. Looks like the Predator has defeated the Alien(ware) on its wild, in-your-face design!

Along with the Asus GX800 ( http://www.techradar.com/reviews/pc...ps-and-netbooks/asus-rog-gx800-1322660/review) it seems that the wealthy, 'more-money-than-sense' buyer is getting some serious targeting...

I have the 4K screen and there aren't any lines no matter how close I go. The only issue with the 4K screen, in my opinion, is the Windows scaling issue which causes some apps to be blurry. Microsoft has been claiming that they are working on it, but there is no set ETA for a real fix. However with the widespread use of high resolution screens recently, I believe a fix is most likely in the near future.

Also, the colors on this screen are amazing and if you're planning on using it for any photo/video editing, the 4K screen is the best choice.

Also, I still play fps games such as doom and battlefield 1 from time to time and I don't see any issues. 60 fps is good enough for me. If you feel that you can't deal with 60 fps, then the 3k screen is your best option.

Just my 2 cents. Hope it helps with your decision.

Yeah, A No-brainer if you prefer to throw your hard earned money down the toilet. Or throw them into the fireplace as firewood. My wife use newspaper, but I think a handful big $$$ works equal  I have said this before... ACER is the new BGA KING  ALIENWARE is properly dethroned from the royal BGA family crown now!! A new revitalized +18 inches AWbook can change it and take back the BGA crown if Mr. Azor @Alienware-Frank can find A proper 18 inches panels for a new AW BGA flagship!!

Glad to help. If you need it for color accuracy then the 4k would be the way to go. I love my 3k for everything, even for viewing photos but I can't really do any editing on it.

I would pick the 3K over the 4K any day of the universe. However I think the best thing to do would be for someone to undertake a project and see if the Chi Mei screen from the GT73VR slots into this machine hehe.

The lines would drive *ME* crazy, and I won't be taking the 3K screen. Your mileage may vary. I have heard that setting the screen to 6-bit colour instead of 8-bit (it's only 6-bit + dithering) can fix the lines. I cannot confirm this.
Exclusive to the 3K screen in the capacity that has been reported here. All screens can see separate pixels if you zoom in close enough, but the 3K screen has a different issue.

Then the 1080p 120Hz screen or the 4K screen would suit you best. I would pick the 1080p screen over the 4K if you're going to be doing any gaming, but it's entirely up to you. Maybe an external screen at home or work for your editing? I know the 4K has more real estate, but it's just atrocious for a gamer. Note that the 4K panel needs to be calibrated to achieve near 100% Adobe RGB; it generally sits around 85-90% without calibration.

The 1080/120 screen is 94% NTSC gamut, which is similar to an un-calibrated 4K panel in terms of Adobe RGB coverage. Adobe RGB and NTSC cover the same number of colours on the colour space grid (they're both the same size of triangle), but NTSC's triangle is positioned lower on the grid than Adobe RGB's. So the colours they actually encompass are a bit different. But still a lot. The 3K screen goes out the window for colour reproduction.

If you're going to install the bare drivers, the killer will perform better than the intel on the whole. Both I suggest using WLAN Optimizer for; with the Killer requiring "disable background scan" turned on, and the intel requiring both "disable background scan" and "enable streaming mode" turned on. But nothing is wrong with either.

Won't really matter; though 4K's extra screen real estate may prove better.

If you really need color accuracy in 3D and CAD applications you will need to create 3D LUTs for that. Or Color correct in post after rendering.

Color accuracy is not really that important for me since my work covers 2d mechanical drawing plans in the construction field. Just curious about the issue with 3k screen having those lines. Is it that noticeable?

    Where? O_O
It depends on the person if it's notice-able. I still suggest avoiding the 3K screen if you're even remotely worried about needing to see lines properly. Or, if we can verify whether using 6-bit colour fixes it, you can simply do that.

+1 for 3K screen. I have it and I love it.
For me one big plus for 3k screen is that it gives you the possibility to play at max settings and go over 60FPS . Some of the games i play struggle to maintain 60FPS on 4k at max setting and it just doesnt feel right to turn down any settings on you brand new laptop.

EDIT: The only downside to that screen is that even though it is a very good TN panel, the color range cannot be compared to a good IPS screen. So if you are used to having one, it might be an issue for you.

EDIT2: I can "see" the horizontal lines as far as upto 500mm (a couple of feet) on some colors if I actively look for it, but its not distracting and never bothers me.

It isn't a very good TN panel as far as colour space goes, though. The 120Hz panel for my model is 72% NTSC; 100% sRGB. The Chi Mei 120Hz in the MSI is 75% Adobe RGB (not tested for NTSC and no spec sheets available) and 100% sRGB. The QHD AUO panel is 55% Adobe RGB and 84% sRGB. Remember that IPS is better contrast and better viewing angles, not better colours.

We even had 95% NTSC 15" panels and 90% NTSC 17" panels back in the PxxxEM days; only the AUO 1080p 120Hz (94% NTSC) and 4K (100% Adobe RGB) even compare from current panels. Most of the 60Hz IPS panels we have right now are 6-bit colour at 55 to 72% NTSC or Adobe RGB.

IPS is just a buzzword selling point for laptops. If you check Notebookcheck's best 2016 panels, they're all also above 25ms B2W and 40ms G2G as well excepting the two TN ones

The closer you are to 1080P the better it is because the issue is that some autocad windows/panes scale with resolution but some dont so the difference can be quite annoying. However higher resolution does give you more spase for your toolbars but i feel the 3K should be sufficient (i havent tried it yet on my laptop). Specially for old school guys like me who still use classic interface instead of the new fancy GUI that make you click two to three times more for the same commands.

You sir are the master of these things. I was just implying my personal opinion in more layman terms. I have been exposed to several $hitty monitors in my work and i can safely say it is one of the best ones. The only one that i found better than this was an IPS Glossy finish monitor that i had a couple of years back.
Even now one of my monitors (that i salvage from the stuff of a retired colleague) is so bad that i cant actually see search box boundary of google. So you can guess how much better the laptop screen would look to me.

I just like to spew the knowledge (/◕ヮ◕)/

The more people know the good stuff, the more it spreads. It's slow, but eventually people will be more educated on the whole. AND THEN THE WORLD WILL BECOME A BETTER PLACE. Or something.

    I ran the Spyder5 Elite on mine AUO B173QTN01.0 panel (1440P 120HZ)...
    94% sRGB
    [IMG]
    66% NTSC

72% AdobeRGB if I remember correctly (forgot to get this screenshot)

EDIT: Regardless of what the numbers say, it's the best looking laptop panel I've seen! Not as good as my Dell S2716DG gaming monitor though, but even it isn't really high on the color scales, just looks better

Which heat sink you are talking about?
Normally there is no way to "fix" it however you can use copper shim to mitigate the issues if you know exactly where the problem is.

So long as you are not doing professional colour work, so long as it is not way off the colour tends to be one of the less important aspects, especially if everything else is good.
