Remember, 95W TDP. So if it overclocks like a beast and isn't a huge furnace, it could be alright.... Too many unknown variables...

go thermaltake, it's a lot cheaper than caselabs and don't cost one whole computer

Depends on future loop upgrades. I've considered building out the loop, then adding TEC and plates to go down to negative temps. One company does this and sits at -11C to 4C under load...

you want to go TEC on the GPU and not the CPU to save money
maxwell and especially pascal scale with temperature instead of voltageajc9988 likes this. -
TEC isnt a good idea in general. Way too hard to keep the hot side cool.
-
The idea is to do both. It takes about a 360x120 to cool a TEC on the CPU. This means at minimum 3 of those to do cpu and two gpus. Then headroom over that is helpful as well. This means 14 120x120 radiator and fans.
Meanwhile, evidently these numbers for Zen leak originated with wccftech, so take with a large grain of salt...

Definitely, which is why the voltage needs dialed in precisely to make sure it is fully stable and the proper water block to fully cool the hot side (standard water blocks don't cut it because of the difference in pulling heat)...

So, depending on what you do, I am not sure I would recommend a zen octa core. I would wait for Skylake E with 3D Xpoint. The 6/8 core skylake e should be on par...
Also, I would recommend going for 2 x 1080 TI/1180/whatever nvidia calls the cheaper GP102 based GPU. Really, dont bother with TECs, its not worth the energy. Not sure if you want to go with chilled water though. It aint cheap.... http://www.ncix.com/detail/koolance-exc-800-portable-800w-recirculating-b8-131290.htm -
I'm considering that as well. 1080 Ti seems like a fall/winter release. The 11 series will arrive with skylake-X (they changed it from E), now estimated Q3 2017...
But if benchmarks don't improve, that will be the plan.
Meanwhile, with chilled water, the limit is 40C on how hot the return water can be, which is my concern with chilled water. For the cost of a cooler, you could by a single phase change cooler!

WORD! +5 rep
Enough is enough.. No tengo ninguna tolerancia para la estupidez -
Full die GP102 will probably not be on the A1 revision IMO. So either 1080 TI is a cut titan chip or something else. Its hard to guess whats nvidia up to really... I dont think we will see a full GP102 anytime soon unless Vega is very very good.
As for AMD, look at the TDP of Zen and the process they are using in comparison to Intel's 14nm finfet, you will have your answer on the estimated performance. I personally dont think its comparable to a Broadwell/Haswell E Octa. -

And that is where performance per cost comes in on Zen. But I have to see more info, otherwise save and wait for next summer and get a premium skylake-X/11 series gpu setup (carries through cannonlake-x which, at this rate, could be 2019-2020 release)...

does the 1080 not support lvds?

so only DM can use the 1080 pascal
how will the old ZM series be able to use the 1080 with internal screen active?Georgel likes this. -
rip
but even the 4th gen GT72 use EDP? -
No mobile Pascal does!!!

My GT72S with the desktop 980 does use eDP. I am not sure about the rest but my guess would be yesGeorgel likes this.

there were two models of the ZM that come with eDP and LVDS mobo eh?
glad I went desktop instead of wasting money on that crap -
I needed a new laptop to take a two day, 6 hour per day, exam...

I had heard that MSI intended the video card kits to work for the next 3 generations at least, if they're all edp that would make sense. -
-
First "promised" generation was 900M and Pascal was the second. I also knew it was a 2 year promise, when did it become 3?D2 Ultima likes this.

Nv rolling out volta next year, guess no laptop for me then.

If Volta is rolling out in notebooks next year I think its definitely worth skipping Pascal if you've got something decent.Papusan likes this.

So this thread has also turned into an off topic thread like the main pascal thread. Why is so so difficult for some guys to keep the off topic out. I am only interested in the information regarding P870DM1/2/3 but these off topic discussions are ruining the thread. There is a reason that the forum has a structure.
If you dont have anything related to this model to post here then:

Here is something interesting to look at regarding the new Eurocom Sky X9E2.

That's literally doubling the OC'd 980 200W.

but how is gt83/gt80 going to work with it's LVDS PLS Samsung 18.4 screen? -
-
Perhaps the MSI cards will be different in that regard? @Prema Were you talking strictly about Clevo cards or?
-
I never ran Heaven with 980 SLI, unfortunately. I was waiting for custom built heat sinks and never got them before it was time to send it back.hmscott likes this.

was that for gt80 too? since it's LVDS solely -
So according to those numbers, the score was approximately doubled?

It would need to have an eDP to LVDS bridge IC.
EDIT:
MXM > eDP > bridge IC > LVDS
They probably do as eDP transition has started like three generations back.
What Mobile Pascal won't do is support old school straight native analog signals (LVDS)
MXM > LVDS

Are you sure about that...?
Let's take a look at a bone stock 980 in our P870DM in heaven:
Let's follow the picture @johnksss posted and use 65% as our scaling even though on the P870DM I'm sure scaling would be better.
65% SLI to 95.7 fps is 157.91fps. That's 33% faster stock for stock for 1080 sli over 980 sli.
If we compare stock 1080 SLI to my overclocked 980 in theoretical SLI we get 181.5fps which puts the stock 1080 sli 16% faster. Obviously we can overclock the 1080s as well.jaybee83, Johnksss, hmscott and 1 other person like this. -
