HA. Unfortunately my voltage only goes "lower" not "higher". It went so low that it'd cause my laptop to "press" the power button and then shut it off as if I held it down. I learned this because when I changed from "shutdown" to "sleep" on power button, it went to sleep before turning off. And then it would screw with the power in the battery, and my PC would randomly turn on and off without being plugged into anything.
That cost me a solid $700 USD trying to get it fixed, NOT COUNTING the price of this Line Conditioner T_T.

Got to love the UK supply
240V makes so much sense for mains.
The server room I have worked in uses Schneider Electric Galaxy series UPS devices, around 30-45 minutes of power down time with a backup generator if the power loss lasts that long. -
As far as I know, APC and Schneider are one and the same. I for some reason keep getting e-mails from them about new things (maybe it happened when I registered my Line Conditioner) and they come from Schneider Electric but talk about APC products.
I know APC is pretty good, but I prefer the best unless it's drastically out of possible cost. I love new information about these things =D.
As for our country, we have the LOVELY (there is much sarcasm in that word) privilege of using 115V 60Hz for power. The only other country in the WORLD I know of that uses this is El Salvador. And even beyond that, only Barbados uses 115V otherwise. Imagine my joy at setting up UPS and Line Conditioner devices >___>ajc9988, TomJGX, Prema and 1 other person like this. -
so do we know more about plugging in a 1080 into the current P870DM-G?

Unfortunately I haven't. The last time I worked with some they wouldn't even let us toss them when they needed replacing, they kind of just went into storage. I wish I could have seen inside them. Also check my edit in the last post for more laughs

Yes pretty much. Though it will be clear tomorrow midnight when the NDA ends. -
They are not supposed to but they have pulled that stunt before.. I would personally get the P870DM from Hidevolution if you want Prema BIOS, they are more upfront about their charges and prices are more reasonable..

EVOC, Mythlogic, Obsidian PC, other prema partner etc = they're just sane people with normal functioning brain to not charge customers decent prices unlike Eurocom
@Ashtrix asked if eurocom can sell him some thermal pads for GTX980M, they asked $45 PLUS SHIPPING for a small set of generic thermal pads. For less than 30$ you can buy a whole set of 0.5-5mm pads from HK.
Eurocom sells the AUO B173ZAN01.0 for 620USD + shipping on ebay, 100$ for the cable. WHILE THE PANEL ITSELF IS 130$ NEW FROM CHINA.
Comparable P870DM MGTX980 from EVOC is around 700$ cheaper compared to Eurocom Sky X9E.
Many other reseller offer Prema bios, not just Eurocom. I would suggest to NEVER buy from Eurocom unless you need to burn money. And even then, just grabbing a lighter to burn your wallet is quicker.DreDre, iunlock, Ashtrix and 1 other person like this. -
I'm of a different school of thought. The other components are easier. So long as you have your basic ram and storage needs taken care of, get the second card. If you benchmark, reverse that. Sometimes you can get the card at a very slight discount over later purchase, it being a must to go with the most powerful available in a non-sli system, less so in an sli system as the cost is closer to the same... But it is your choice. You may also consider ordering without ram and purchasing it on the market, if your reseller allows. Cheaper and better for you in the purchase! Same with hard drives...

I am waiting anxiously for the P870DM2 or P870DM3, depending on the configurations. My question, will a single 1080 be offered on the P870DM2 and P870DM3? Based off the information I gather from the manual and on this forum, the main difference between the two is that the P870DM3 will have SLI support. I'm not really fond of SLI due to the many issues I had in the past. With that said, if the P870DM3 has better cooling overall, I will want that and still stick to a single 1080 card.

Thank you very much for the quick response. I guess it will come down to whether I choose a FHD or UHD screen. Likely the former.

If my calculations are correct and if GTX 1070 mobile gets 2k cores for the price of GTX 980M we have the following:
- 1070 desktop is faster than 1060 desktop by ~45% (~300$ price difference in mobile segment)
- 1080 desktop is faster than 1070 desktop by ~25% (~450$ price difference in mobile segment)
So what's the point in getting DUAL GTX 1080 SLI instead of GTX 1070 if they have more cores then desktop GTX 1070 and 2x330W PSUs against 2x230W PSUs. I guess the laptops with 1080 SLI will cost around 1000USD more then with 1070 sli for ~20% more performance increase and bulkier PSUs.
Could you please tell us if the 1070 SLI in DM2 and 1070/1080 SLI in DM3 heatsinks are different? -

Tnx, Prema) I first thought "The Grid" was just one massive HS for both cards and the CPU. But here on a picture you can clearly see that underneath this giant HS there're heatpipes on top of CPU already and the part of the CPU cover on the Grid attaches to the existing HS right in the corner, i guess on a thermal pad. But why so weird?)
After all that makes me think there's not too much hope for upgradebility of such units, gpu wise. So many small changes to chasing and internals. -
anyone with the manual please provide me with dropbox/g.drive link?
the clevo link is dead. tq. -
Just have to say...
If this thing isn't upgradeable (or there isn't anything to upgrade to next year), I may not be purchasing this over a desktop. Rumors are rumors but Vega and Volta seem to be closer than we anticipated. It's not that I think the 1080 is weak, outdated, or anything like that... I just don't want to purchase an "upgradeable" system for a premium price and not have anything to upgrade it with.
EDIT: Added a bit more to explain my reasoning behind this. -
Unfortunately, this is impossible to predict. Now that NVIDIA no longer supports the MXM standard and OEMs are free to wing it and do whatever they feel like doing, just about anything goes.
It would suck to really bad to be in the same position as current P870DM-G owners with a P870DM3 at this time next year.Last edited: Aug 14, 2016 -
Upgradeability-wise, it definitely seems like a bad time to be in the market for a laptop PC. I'm sure this thing will handle any game I throw at it for a couple years, though. But that's not really the point.Last edited: Aug 15, 2016

I agree. What I have will be able to handle any games I throw at it for a very long time. Probably for more than a couple of years. But, you're 100% correct. That is definitely not the point.
I'm confident the P870DM3 is going to be more of a beast than my new P870DM-G with 1080 SLI. It will be crushed by 1080 SLI and be of little or no value to me for overclocked benching. Likewise, the P870DM2 will be pointless dead-end product if the spacing on the MXM slots is the same as the P870DM-G.
I'd probably find myself scared to buy anything right now. If I had cash to spend and were looking to spend it, I would probably opt to build my own open air benching station with desktop parts at this time.Last edited: Aug 14, 2016DreDre, Spartan@HIDevolution, hmscott and 5 others like this. -
I completely agree with you. The DM3 looks to be my first Clevo purchase, but one of the reasons why I want to become a part of the "Clevo family" is due to the ability to upgrade the GPU for at least one cycle. However, if that is not the case, I will stick to what I know best and that's desktops.
-
But what other option is out there?
Clevo should provide better performance for the price compared to our other options...
And just buying desktop components raises the question of how to transport them, and a laptop already has a display...Shadow God, Spartan@HIDevolution, Rage Set and 1 other person like this. -
Anyone that has a long history with Clevo can answer this. Can Clevo be trusted? Rather, would they stick close to the MXM standard even with Nvidia abandoning the standard? I have known about MXM DTR's for a while but I convinced myself to stay away. It is only until recently I've stumbled upon Clevo and became very interested in a gaming DTR. I rather not invest 3k+ in a dying standard or non-upgradeable laptop. My last "gaming" DTR was an Asus G1s years ago and it barely lasted two years before it died. It left a sour taste in my mouth.

Nvidia are the chairing member of the SIG that controls MXM. If MXM is ever abandoned then they'd actually be the LAST member to do it.
I don't know why everyone got into knots about MXM supposedly disappearing. It's garbage. If only for one reason, Nvidia has been dumping HUGE amounts of money into their "Drive" autonomous car system and guess what it's reliant on.....2 MXM GPUs:

Seems like Kaby Lake is coming in September and then Cannonlake (10nm) will arrive around the same time next year. So, the CPU may not even be upgradeable by the end of 2017, as far as I can tell. And it looks like Volta is on the way, too. This suggests to me that the P870DM3 is a one-year (single generation) product, and so is Pascal and all Pascal-based products.
Kaby Lake is still the same socket type as Skylake. They're basically the same CPU.

As I've said before, the next big thing will be, "Gaming desktops built into rolling suitcases." LOL...then we'll be talking about dampener pads along side with thermal pads etc...custom wheel replacements and handle grips haha...
With Kaby Lake right around the horizon, how soon would this become available on the dtr's?
Then again, with Volta releasing soon...
What a cluster fluff of a time for the market eh?

Volta may actually stay 16nm for 2017 but have HBM2, and then refresh on the 10nm process in 2018. So, it may be advisable to wait for compatibility and upgradeability sake.
Definitely seems like a single year product.Last edited: Aug 14, 2016DreDre, Papusan, Spartan@HIDevolution and 1 other person like this. -

So do you think we can install a Kabyle flake in the current P870DM?Georgel likes this. -
I don't know why but I get a feeling Kaby lake might be similar to Broadwell in that it offers very little performance improvements in favor for better efficiency and a smaller than usual line up of chips. Like a couple of desktop chips but mostly low power mobile chips.
Anyone else feel like this and overall not excited about it?
Edit: More concerned about the rumors about intel combining their gaming Z-chipset with their enthusiast X-chipset. Not sure what this entails and forgot where I heard about this leak. -
Actually, they already signed the contract for Samsung 14nm for their next cards. Article came out recently. Meanwhile, Samsung 10nm is heralded more than TSMCs process and is why GloFo contracted to get Samsung 14nm process. So looks like TSMC may lose the transition. Meanwhile, 2018 is the absolute earliest for 10nm video cards and most suspect from comments in the industry that 14nm will be the process for awhile, just as 28nm was.
Yes
Try comparing it to devil's canyon 4790K rather than broadwell, which is cannonlake! It is a refresh is all.
Edit: they are not coming Z with the enthusiast. They are releasing a 6 core mainstream chip. They are releasing E chips as X chips. Still separate lines!

Has anyone hit CPU limitations with an overclocked Skylake 6700K even now? I'm with you in that the release of Kaby Lake likely won't be a huge deal....especially when the current Skylakes are still holding their own...

Not really, but overclockers like Fox, papu, Phoenix would like to try new cpu architecture for a different overclocking experience. Maybe it'll boost a bench score or two.
It's just down to how you enjoy the hardware, if you like it, then continue on using it. If you want to try something new, then I don't see why not. -

There are rumours that intel will take their mainstream CPU die and package it on the enthusiast package to act as a low end entry point for the higher end platform but with all the same I/O restrictions as the mainstream as the chip would not have extra interfaces. Just the same core on a different package able to communicate with the chipset.

Some of the doom and gloom being posted here is simply how technology works, unfortunately. Kaby Lake would not likely be a required upgrade (at least for me). Volta is still ways off, likely arriving Q2 2018. What we will get next year is a highly improved version of Pascal. What I am hoping is when that Pascal 2nd Gen comes out, I can upgrade to it with the DM3.
-
Now that I did read! A skylake-x 4 core chip is in the works.

-
You mean it will have igp?
-
-
If that lets it cool better due to spreading the heat, but I don't know. Otherwise these laptops have the iGPUs turned off completely so there's no extra power draw or heat from them that I know of.ajc9988 likes this.
-
It can allow for better placement of components on the die without the room needed for the igpu. This is why I suspect better performance, and possibly control of the heat.

'I have a higher calling' -
Devil's Canyon = "refresh" and Kabylake is an "optimization" ?
The former was still Haswell with no changes while the latter gets new features, slightly higher ipc, and even more powerful igpus.
Cannonlake actually has new features while Broadwell was only a die shrink. AVX 3.2 ( Skylake-X only has AVX 3.1 enabled )
