I know about those modules, but when my friend tried those in his Sager NP9870-S, they wouldn't let him boot. And we couldn't find any info anywhere that said that ECC memory is supported. It might also have to do something with being buffered and un-buffered. I might be talking out of my ass though, so feel free to correct me

I tried searching for google, but not much was brought up.

They said something about ECC and that RAM can fail three times per year if ran 24/7, but then again, I've never seen anything like that in my computer, maybe that is important for servers to not crash, but even then, I've not seen a server get a RAM error.

Programmers assume that RAM won't have errors in general, I did not know there are RAM failuers that can be repaired XD

I've been looking at the options for the P870DM on HIDevolution while waiting for the new release, and has anyone tried out the silicon lottery delidded 6700k? I'm wondering if it's worth it.

@Mr. Fox - why not sell your system on ebay (high fetching price usually) and just get a new one? Less headache since the 1080 / 1070 is officially supported on the DM2/3(-G)

no and no, and thats where you're wrong. more L3 cache speeds up a lot of software that would normally need to go to ram due to small L3 cache in typical consumer cpu. and xeon tend to be higher binned than consumer cpu.

I would get the normal 6700K from them.. Honestly, you don't need a Silicon Lottery one unless you bench... A normal 6700K usually can hit 4.5GHz which is plenty!

Whatever you say. Im sure you had a Xeon 16 Core System with 128GB ECC memory and have compared it to a standard Core i7 for general use. And im sure that you work in an industry that uses Xeon's extensively as well.

Silicon lottery has 4.7@$350, 4.8 @$430. Yes, you have to install it and can pay $50 for delid, thereby dropping heat and no warranty in the chip, but if you purchase without a cpu, you save what it costs for a 4.8ghz, about. At that point, I see the benefit for the buck, getting a more efficient chip that overclocks better...

Agreed on core count. It would be nice to have the ability to run a hex or octo core CPU in the P870DM2/3. My understanding is that intel has made a decision that for skylake and future CPUs anything > 4 cores will only be found in Xeon packages and nowhere else. Note, not saying I know intel's product line up and down, but rather, what I recall being told here or on another forum.

In regards to ECC, well, while it would be nice, I don't have high precision needs, but with sometimes needing simultaneous 5+ VMs the extra cores would help immensely.

Now, if only the bottom of the case could be extended to allow for two of the new Seagate 60TB SSDs. ;)

My .02 cents (having just bought one in April): Principle - it was supposed to be upgradeable. If not for the foreseeable future, then certainly more than 1 year. That being said, eBay will be an option for me if I decide that I really want to go SLI again.

    Looks like it.

Single 1080 should be enough for everyone, seeing as the sli support for games is piss poor.

Thanks for the speedy response. The last video game I've played was asteroids on atari so I'm way out of touch with games. But I can see why some guys would be extremely upset if they're into benchmarking.

Hopefully by tomorrow this time, we will see which company will get my initial budget of $2800. All I want is the "basics", Processor and a single 1080 in a DM3. Everything else I will likely get through my business at a good discount.

if u actually look at how its designed with directing GPU heat towards CPU fan, this machine has no hope of anything more than 4c CPU. at best we get a 6c CPU that'll throttle due to heat heck i think even 4c will overheat like crazy tbh.

One last question. Should I stick with a FHD screen if I'm only getting a single 1080 card or upgrade to an UHD screen? If I go with an UHD screen, I know the majority of games I will have to lower the res to 1080p. What do you guys think?

I have the UHD, with 980m sli, if you're not picky with everything turned on, you can easily get 30fps on most games at 4k. And if you tweak it some more, you can get some games in the 50s-60s. I would like to think the 1080 would be enough for 4k

Plus if the rumors or right you are going to want the FHD 120hz / 5ms.
99% of screens out there have been 25ms screens. Yuck! That is the weakest link even in previous DTR monsters.
