Just for clarity the panel specs for the P870
120Hz is a AUO B173HAN01.2 (AHVA)
4k is a AUO B173ZAN01.0 (AHVA)

Higher res screens can't run faster at lower resolutions typically as the controller still has to switch the same number of pixels.
-
If you are so inclined, buy the 4K panel yourself for about the same cost, keep the FHD as a backup or sell it to recoup some of the display cost.

I have the fast 3000 Mhz. 64 GB RAM and have the silicon lottery CPU + SSDs
all I need is that nice screen and the barebones laptop with the dual 1080 GTX -
so they both are 25 ms to 27 ms?
-
No the 4K is, the 120Hz we don't have a complete data-sheet yet, but we surmise it to be the same 5ms 120Hz screen MSI etc have been using. As we don't know of any other 120Hz laptop LCD on the market.i_pk_pjers_i, marios50 and ajc9988 like this.

Yes I think it will be 5ms too due to the high refresh rate where 25ms just does not cut it.

I think that might be a P870DM2, but I'm not 100% certain of that. Bottom line with HIDevolution, if you don't see it, ask for it. That goes for most of them. Most Clevo resellers will provide quotes for a la carte builds, so don't hesitate to ask. I suspect @Ted@HIDevolution or @Donald@HIDevolution would be glad to provide you a quote for what you're looking for if an EVOC is what you had in mind. Good choice... with the @Prema BIOS and vBIOS, you'll have a monsterbook with no artificial flavors or preservatives.

It's brand new and I'm sure that most of the vendors are still tweaking their order configuration tools. See my reply to @DeeX above.Chronokiller likes this.

Is it possible that the D2 vs D3 is just the change in the heatsink but same chassis and board?
i.e. If I order a D3 I get an SLI setup with the heatsink to match.
If I order a D2 I get a Single GPU setup with a heatsink to match etc. -
We know for sure its the same motherboard, DM2 and DM3. It should just be a (giant) heatsink change, as the DM3 heatsink is one piece that covers the CPU and both GPU'sajc9988 likes this.
-
That looks about where I'm at, except for the 1TB 961
-
I only have second hand information to work with, but this word from our Authority on the product may help. It looks kind of like the P870DM2 could be exactly the same machine (or same MXM spacing) as the P870DM-G minus the G-stink and plus 120Hz 5ms IPS-ish display. It will work with existing Maxwell and next gen Pascal GPUs up to and including dual 1070 and single 1080.
-
The reason I ask is because Im sure people wonder if they get a D2, can they get an other card + heatsink + SLI cable down the road if they ever want to.
If the D3 and the D2 are the same chassis and same mobo then its possible.
WTB a tear down.
Spartan@HIDevolution likes this. -
According to the diagram, the DM2 and DM3 share a bottom case and a mid-frame, so should be ok, but until we tear down the full on production units, take with tiny grain o salt.
-
I would not count on that. At least get 100% clarity on it first and then verify beyond the shadow of any doubt that what you are told is accurate. Otherwise, you could find yourself in EXACTLY the same sorry state of affairs current P870DM-G owners are in. I would not wish that on anyone. Our plans were foiled. If the DM2/DM3 are not identical except for GPU configuration options, it would be kind of stupid to even consider buying the DM2 with plans to upgrade it later.
EXACTLY. Words from the wise! Please take them seriously to avoid disappointment. Very little detailed technical information is available at this time to answer all of the subtle nuances and what-if scenarios.
It would not make any sense for them to offer a DM2 and DM3 if they were the identical machines except for what one selected for graphics cards and heat sinks from an order configuration page. That would be downright silly. I think there almost has to be some major differences that we cannot clearly identify thus far. -
-
To get a little nerdy (and not arguing anything). One of the major drivers that spawn new models is the fact that different models (Even with the same motherboards) have different current supplies (2x230 vs 2x330). This difference in power means that each "model" has to be tested on its own by regulatory agencies (UL, UV, TeU, etc etc). So thats one of the drivers of how you get different models.Shadow God, Prema, TBoneSan and 6 others like this.

I wonder if we could order the D2 with the D3 heat sink if we're wanting just a single 1080...the larger D3 heat sink in itself would surely due the D2 beast some justice eh?
Just thinking out loud...for those going for the single 1080..ajc9988 likes this. -
The single 1080 in the DM2 already has the 980 Desktop style cooler, so by the numbers a single 1080 with the DM2 heatsink will cool that single 1080 as well or better, because it doesn't have to fight the other 1080 + CPU. The DM3 cooler is shared with GPUs and CPUs so you can impact cooling performance on the GPUs if the CPU is huming along.
-
Ah true true. Thanks for clarifying.
I have a feeling that either,
A.) One would have to buy the D3 right off the bat in order to future proof (ie.. if wanting SLI with that being the only option)
or
B.) The D2 will have its differences where it won't be possible to upgrade to a SLI config for whatever odd reason...
As @Mr. Fox, mentioned above, it would be counter-intuitive for them to release a D2 that is exactly the same as the D3, less the differences in parts...but then again, who knows... -
Yeah our stance is if you want the pair of 1080, then would just drop down on the pair of 1080, as you know the standalone card prices for the 1080 are going to vastly exceed just buying it upfront.
Even before the other potential parts you need... if it works at all. -
You mentioned fighting a second 1080. He was talking "the Grid" only cooling one 1080 and the cpu, compared with the 980 style cooling the 1080. If the vapor chamber is efficient enough, and considering the tdp of cooling both cards being higher than the 350W cooling of the 980 style, it would be an interesting fight!!!

Indeed...
Okay now the other thought that I had was (a bit rhetorical on purpose)...If we buy the D3 now, how about Kaby Lake and Volta that isn't too far away? My answer to that would be, "With a 6700K + 1080 SLI, you'll be okay for a long long time...no sweat." -
Kaby lake will likely be supported. Who knows with Volta. Check out the discussions on Nvidia loosening grips and pcb changes/heat dissipation and change in mobile gpu market purchases in the Pascal thread. ..

I would like to see a 400W Dual GPU Core single PCB 1080 16GB or 32GB card that can work in either my current or this new machine and a PCB that can fill up the unused slave GPU space. Now that would be a single card configuration I could be happy with in my 2.5 month old obsolete P870DM-G.

6700K + Dual 10xx cards with DM3 GRID cooling is absolutely bonkers, tbh this is only machine that I was waiting for the Pascal NDA to lift, considering this will be the last machine that can handle Win7.
Are these branded as EVOC or Eurocom or nothing ?
Thanks ! -
Ok, so what some haven't spoke to much on is that heat...Yes friends the 1080 is a super conducting furnace coming it at 90C on heaven benchmark. I sure hope that was with fans off or at 25 percent or something like that....

Right let's set some things straight guys.
A) mobile sli connectors and desktop ones are different, you should have enough bandwidth on mobile sli that it is not an issue.
B) Turbo 3.0 has a set temperature and power limit, the cards will run pretty hot because 3.0 just keeps going until those limits are reached. -
It reaches 90C (GPU1) in this video:

Does anybody know if Sager will be offering the SM961 with these? I want a 1TB M.2 SSD, though oddly enough Sager isn't even offering the 1TB 850 Evo M.2 card. Do any Sager resellers have any info on this?
