Is it confirmed by now that the P870DM3 SLI uses indeed a vapor chamber or is it just a metal plate with heatpipes on top of it?

    About screens.

I searched on panel info and other official sites, and all FHD displays are 6bit so far, maybe they have the wrong info.

About refresh rate, read the review on notebookcheck on MSI's offering with 120Hz, it does 120Hz, but BW and GG rates are around 30 ms, not under 5ms.

    TBD for 100% confirmation.

My guess would be yes, on both the D3 and D2 models despite the differences in the piping with that amount of power/heat.

Is it wise to get additional warranty cover for dead pixels on a 4K screen? I thought maybe one can't see it with such small pixels

Lol. Good thing we have the AUO I guess?

I told everyone we still get 6-bit in laptops in general. I would have actually shat a brick if that was true 8-bit. However, what is the + dithering?

Honestly, the cooling seems pretty nice there with turbo fan, though the power limit throttle bothers me some, and so does the 6820HK (I need lots of CPU power).

That's the LG Philips screen that MSI uses, not the AUO that Clevo does.

    I highly doubt it's 8-bit, unfortunately.

    It does and is.

However the 120Hz clevo should be gsync'd; can't talk about the MSI LG Philips.

It's +$1000 at mythlogic, use that as your baseline.

If that helps a french retailer (materiel.net) didn't mark Gsync for the MSI GT73VR - 120Hz panel option. As I suspected, 120hz and Gsync don't get along as of now imo.

So HID is listing as in stock and prema bios. I assume gpu prema bios also? I was hoping for 120hz gsync 1080p. Not. 4K fan by any means on such a small screen.

    Prema bios not ready.

Some people need 4k for their work, not so much for gaming. It all depends. For me since I travel frequently I need the 4k as I can't always haul my external 4k monitor with me.

But having gsync on the 4k option is nice. Can't complain. I'll take it.

What GPU heat would that be? Not going to OC'ing the GPU and command lines usually don't stress a GPU too much. TBH, the GTX 460M in this x7200 would work fine... Well, not exactly so, need a QFHD LCD, so need the minimum GPU to run that resolution.

Possibly... Some video editing and other stuff I guess. Gsync on a 60hz panel at 4K "IMO" is silly. But "IMO" I can't stand games that dip below 100 anyway. I'll take the 120 with gsync anyway over a 75hz gsync panel.

It'll be a few months before I decide to invest anyway. I'm on desktops right now for my heavy lifting. Don't game mobile much nowadays. I'll start traveling again next year and might pick one up. I have a couple laptops that can handle my gaming load right now. :)

    I game at 4k with g-sync. G-sync makes 40-50 fps feel like 100 fps without g-sync.

Once you game in 4k and using butter smooth animation provided by g-sync there is no going back. I had before the FullHD panel on my P870DM so I know what I´m talking about. The difference is night and day.

G-sync is imho ESPECIALLY usefull in 4k because you usually don´t have the graphics power to drive high fps in 4k.

So guys Please help me out here.
I am looking at Clevo or MSI with 1070 SLI or 1080 Solo and 120HZ Panel ( I understand both have no G-Sync)
Can you suggest the 120hz panel without gsync or 4k with gsync
I mainly game and I seriously seriously cannot stand any stutter or lag while playing and want to run stuff at ultra after all I am paying for it.

That's great for single player games but if your in competitive multiplier first person shooters 40fps will get stepped on, slammed, mopped over and treated like a red headed step child.

This explains pretty well what is dithering.

They have 6bit, but have the neightbouring pixels interchange colors to obtain a new color.

It is not true 8bit though, true 8bit will have smooth colors and gradients, not an alternation of pixels to mimic colors they can't reproduce... On the same theme, I think it is consuming more resources to have a dithering controller than it would consume to have the colors XD

Until they give us the option to get a 1080p panel with TRUE 8 bit color support and similar color coverage as the B173ZAN01.0, I'll stick with the AUO 4K.

Seems like Prema bios is not ready from the resellers. I'm not a fan of being an early adopter, will wait until @Ted@HIDevolution or @mythlogic has it ready before shipping.

This is a screen shot from GentechPC's GT73 review video, it looks like doesn't require extra power supply like the Clevo.
And my friend told me that MSI's GTX1080 has a 190 watts TDP and Clevo only have 150 watts TDP.
Moreover, apparently when stressing the P870DM3 with 1080SLI, card 2 will throttle all the way to 600mhz with no obvious reason

If it helps sort things out for refresh rate, gamut, and other panel properties, this was posted by myth a while back (my paraphrasing)

    P870DM3
    - FHD 120Hz = AUO B173HAN01.2 (AHVA)
    - QFHD 4K screen = AUO B173ZAN01.0 (AHVA)

The 120Hz 1080p screen is a brand new model and there are no published specs that I could find for it as of Saturday. It is an AUO B173HAN01. 2 AHVA. Has anyone found detailed specs for this yet?

If the 4K screen is the same one I had installed on the Sky X9E I really hated it. I'm glad I don't need 4K for anything because I thought it sucked. It looked like crap set at 1080p and the refresh rate was still gimped at the lower resolution. Then again I have hated every 4K laptop I have tested, so it's not only this one that sucks. I have found all of them to be totally miserable.

wait you're talking about x7200 or p870dm2. p870dm2 the gpu heatsink goes ontop of cpu heatsink so heat would be shared that way.

That could very well be NVIDIA's signature vBIOS cancer that has been a thorn in our flesh since at least the Fermi days. GeForce mobile cards always runs like crap with a stock vBIOS. @Prema may be able to fix that by raising the TDP max to 250W - 300W. At first blush, I'm going to guess that 150W TDP is simply too low to function correctly. It may need at least 200W TDP per GPU to run without throttling at stock clocks and probably at least 250W TDP to overclock without throttling. Then the effectiveness of the new monster cooling system will get put to the ultimate test with an additional 100W TDP per GPU to achieve full performance potential. Should be interesting to see how that shakes out. Hopefully, they engineered it to effectively manage thermals at least 300W per GPU. The 200W 980 hits 300W with unlocked Prema vBIOS when heavily overclocked. I'd expect nothing less from a 1080.

My 1080 AMP runs around 65c with Liquid ultra + custom fans (1.093-1.094v) - around 275-290w constant power draw under DX11 Witcher 3 Ultra 4K load. This is with power limit fully disabled but has no way to disable the -13mhz throttling everytime break above 50c.

1.2v it runs at around 310W, have concerns (read below).

Keep in mind that the pascal cards.

    1. VERY sensitive to thermals
    2. Lowering power limit and thermal consumption might net you higher clockspeed
    3. Runs hotter in theory because of smaller substrate with more transistors
    4. Don't really care about voltage, temperature matters more. Ideally below 50c.
    5. More voltage can mean less stability, I'd say don't go above 1.093v.

Prema stated that automatic fan profile never goes above 60% of the maximum fan speed. So when setting it manually to 100% the throttling of card 2 might not happen, at least I hope so. Noise will be a different story. Unforrunately the fans on the P870DM3 seem to be smaller than on the old modell. I hope this will not be the root of the proplem...

    The P870DM2, of course.

In regards to my comment, a GPU would have to be generating a lot of heat for that to be a problem. In my work, I don't think I've seen a GPU temp past 45 - 50C. A shared heat sink would introduce a new variable, but don't believe the 47C temp from a single GPU would affect an hex core enough to induce throttling. Now, if they made one (6 or 8 core CPU - LGA 1151 - Z170), I could tell you.

Also, there is the 'shared' heat sink you mention. Can anyone confirm if there are heat sink differences between the P870DM2 vs. the P870DM3? My understanding is the P870DM3 has the new T-design heat sink / thermal plate to help dissipate heat where GPU and CPU are shared heat sources. I thought I read the P870DM2 has a different configuration where CPU and GPU heat sinks are isolated - much like the original P870DM.

    http://www.panelook.com/B173HAN01.0_AUO_17.3_LCM_overview_26291.html

AUO B173HAN01.0 is 6bit + FRC . But at the same time it was 60Hz instead of 120, maybe they increased bit depth. What makes me hesitant to believe this is the fact that increasing bit depth usually increases the bandwidth needed thus it's a bit unlikely that they increased bot bit depth and refresh rate.

But it''s all an educated guess at this point.

BTW, for 1.0 version, in panelook, they do write that it is 25 ms response time panel.

IT seems that the refresh rate has nothing to do with the response time for 99% of laptop displays. I mean, almost every laptop display advertised as 60Hz has a refresh rate higher than 16ms, which would be the minimum for 60 fps. The old LG, that is found in all 9XX high end laptops is the same. It's advertised as 60Hz, but it's response time is 25ms typical.

Most laptops, I mean almost all laptops in this world touch ~80C on GPU and depending on CPU, ~95C on CPU.

    Desktop cards run much colder.

Wait. Those specs are wrong for the new panel. Don't make a rash decision based on speculation just because the .0 version sucks. The new .2 version is supposed to be 5ms, not 25ms. Unless you've already tested a 4K 17 inch screen and found you like it, I think chances are very high that you will despise it and regret wasting money on such a horrible product. Better safe that sorry.

Why is it, nowadays, there never seems to be a laptop that meets all of my wants and desires? It's like they all get so close, sometimes missing that one crucial aspect.

    Bring back the 2012 Alienware.

Yeah, this is disturbing to me also. Great reasons to wait and let other people spend their money first. I'm skeptical Pascal is everything NVIDIA wants us to believe it is cracked up to be. If it throttles and is gimped in any manner, it may not be as awesome as it should have been. That will suck. I'll reserve an opinion until I see what kind of overclocking performance @Prema and @johnksss get out of theirs. If Brother @johnksss is not tickled pink with it in every respect, there's no way in hell I would consider wasting my money on it.

He may have twisted something...it's actually closer to being the other way round, same as last time the 980s. ;)

With stock vBIOS all systems will throttle frequently MSI & Clevo alike...

    Benchmarks for Asus G752V 1070 vs Eurocom Sky X9 980m SLI / 980.
(posted as a 1070 vs 980m SLI/980 comparison, not an Asus vs Clevo one)

1.2V? Do you have pictures of this and links to your scores? Reason I ask is because I don't remember seeing your name on 3dmark in the top 10 hall of fame categories. And to get 1.2V it takes a lot of hard modding.

Thanks for the reply. Is there a chance that this certification will be done in near future? I mean what sort of time frame we are looking at? If this is a month or so, i can wait.

LOL... leave it to Micr$lop to toss a monkey wrench into things. So, more DX12 lameness from the Redmond Mafia.

The fact that some games don't scale well with SLI is irrelevant and a silly argument from single GPU fanboys. If a game doesn't, you simply disable SLI and enjoy the same single GPU experience as everyone else. Otherwise, you run SLI and annihilate single GPU performance in everything else... easy peazy. That decision requires no thought... no brainer.

Both options are not ideal, but if I had to choose, I'd take the 4k G-SYNC display and single 1080, then cut down the resolution and enjoy gaming without issue.

A 120Hz, G-SYNC display with < 5ms response time would be ideal. Guess you'll have to go external for that.
