so basically that p870dm is as bad as a bga trash in terms of upgrade options lol

So I had to go back and look. And yes, me starting a benchmarking thread in the Alienware forums was me bragging. You are right. Dec. 5, 2011 was When Batboy started the thread for me. I received my new M18XR2 with SLI580M's in it on the 14th or so of that month. 6 months after the release of the 580M which came out in June of the same year. The same GPU I helped unlocked for higher overclocking after everyone thought it was at it's limits.(August 2011) So my bragging started 6 months after everyone else.
DGDXGDG Was the the guy who was on top for the 580M's Back then. Up until Dec 2011. With some crazy mods he had going on.
My 3dmark Vantage score was about 33K back then.
http://www.3dmark.com/3dmv/3557146
My 3dmark06 score was 34K back then.
http://www.3dmark.com/3dm06/16512823
No one broke 4.7k because of drivers and tech at the time. I bet it would clear that real easy now? That goes for 9K as well.
But lets get back to that bragging.... I'll pick only one of the threads your in.

At least I was bragging with a benchmark thread for all to post.

Definitely more than 1 version of the card, depending on the manufacturer. If you compare this picture to the one posted earlier with the heat sinks on (P870DM2) the card seems to be slightly smaller. Maybe the P775DM2 version?
Either ways if Clevo have just cut off upgrades on the P870DM, i can for see some serious amount of hate coming towards them. I for one, wont even consider buying another flagship, just because of what they have done this time around. Greed maybe?Last edited: Aug 5, 2016Papusan, TBoneSan, ssj92 and 1 other person like this. -
I don't know @bloodhawk... It's looking like the exact same card including screw holes....

Ah! Actually you are right!
Couldn't double check the images, since they weren't loading or something.
Ah well, no upgrades then lol. Unless, one of the screws can still fit
I wonder what its like for the other brands like ASUS/MSI? Really doubt their systems will be upgrade able as well.Last edited: Aug 5, 2016 -

Metabox prema partner too? -
Well, you could always try to sell yours. Although I know that is not what you want to hear....Considering how much you will lose on the whole deal....

MSI's MXM cards are different, I actually had an MSI rep confirm it for me over the phone. They have their own design so it accommodate their 2 year upgrade promise.

Oh nice! Well at least MSI owners will be happy.
Ill just wait things out, or get an eGPU solution, or just mod the shizznet out of the system to get things going. But time will tell.
The desktop processor however, is my main criteria, since that is the best option out there for current gen laptops.electrosoft likes this. -
you should have expected a new model coming soon, probably should return your unit if you canhmscott likes this.

except that the mxm upgrade kit is impossible to buy anywhere -
Thats what most people think.

Agreed, theghosts you should do that if you can.. You unfortunately bought it at the wrong time..

Guys relax, 1080 (single Clevo) is no major problem on current P870DM. There is also a new giant T-shaped single card heatsink (just like the one for current 200W 980) to support the other L-shape direction.
MSI cards work in our Clevo's as well...Last edited: Aug 5, 2016 -
Prema do you think a 1080 or a 1070 can fit a (clevo) 15 inch barebone ?
-
link me the official upgrade kit purchase page... -
I just hope we can upgrade to an SLI setup. I know 1080 SLI is out of the question but I still have hope for 1070 SLI.
It will be interesting to see Clevo's big single 1080.oveco likes this. -
Never said anything about any "official" upgrade page/kit. No manufacturer other than MSI has had any "official" "upgrade" kits.
Point is that people never check with the right people and/or sources.
Heck all the talk about the 180W cards not being available, all it took was an email to EUROCOM to get the pricing a couple of months back.
For example the 980DT (200W) has been available for a long ass time in lots of place.
For example : http://rjtech.com/shop/index.php?dispatch=products.view&product_id=30444 -
Even HIDEvolution was willing to sell me the 180W cards.ajc9988 likes this.

ah, so it's not sold by msi, you have to buy from other sellers -
Exactly, people like @Mobius 1 , just tend to jump to conclusions without asking the right sources. (do not mean this in a detrimental way, before you jump the gun)
Heck i already have a source willing to get me the new Pascal cards once they are out. Just cant name them yet. -
Let me spell it this way :
NO MANUFACTURER other than MSI, directly sells upgrade kits. NONE. -
So where does msi directly sell this upgrade kit?
-
-
only place I see is from hidevolution -
You can check with the respective resellers you purchase them from.
My friend has some MSi laptop, and he was able upgrade to the 980M or something after talking to MSI and they told him to contact his reseller, who sold him the full kit.
If its MSI cards you are interested in, the respective forums would be the best place to enquire about them.Last edited: Aug 5, 2016 -

I've also received confirmation that the 1080 will with some *help* work in a P870DM, no SLI tho.
-
-
You have official resellers, in France for instance it's materiel.net, they (used to) sell upgrade kit for the msi gt72. Eventually, check on MSI website for the list of resellers

I guess I will wait and see what the 1080 max OC benchmarks look like compared to my max OC on the 200W 980. If 1080 turns out to be as overpriced as I am expecting it to be, the difference in performance could be too insignificant to justify spending a huge wad of cash. But, yeah... really sucks bad that 1080 SLI won't fit. In that case, I am even less inclined to spend money if I cannot go SLI.
I'm really not liking the trend in goofy varieties of notebook GPU form factors that's taking place, and with the idiots from NVIDIA no longer supporting the MXM standard this may be an early glimpse of a terribly screwed up future for high performance notebooks. I'm not in a hurry to spend money on anything right now. I'm going to wait a generation or two to see if things normalize or get worse. -
Desktop time or eGPU.

wait so to summarize this thread as I haven't been following through,
the new P870DM2/3 will have a single 1080 only? And what would be a desktop class version not an M model but no SLI? -
-
Exactly what I am thinking. Why spend $1,000 to upgrade from a single 200W 980 to a single 1080... kind of stupid, really. Financially, I'm better off to just leave it alone and put a full sized 1080 or Titan in an eGPU, or better yet, do absolutely nothing and enjoy the 200W 980 beast for a couple of years.
If I could roll back the clock and buy one with 1080 SLI, sure... I'd do that in a heartbeat. But, I can't. And, because somebody thought making goofy sized MXM cards was a smart idea I have a new machine parked at the end of a dead end street. NICE! If I were going to spend money on a GPU upgrade it would be 180W 980 SLI. But, I'm not going to.Last edited: Aug 7, 2016 -

and those are not M right? -
Thats actually what im doing and my friend who has the core, he's waiting for the 1080 Strix to come back in stock at the normal price , knowing well that it will get bottlenecked by the TB3 bandwidth, but he will be getting a desktop in a few months, so that saves some costs for him.Last edited: Aug 5, 2016

I think it already has. Seems like a dirty rotten trick to try to screw existing P870DM-G owners to me. I'm not liking that... kind of pisses me off to be frank about it.
Yup, I think I'm just going to watch and observe to and see what happens for a year or two. Who is to say they won't pull the same kind of crooked asinine stunt on P870DM2/3 owners when 1080 gets replaced by NVIDIA's next fad GPU? I may not ever buy another laptop again if I see any future examples of this kind of scam. I'm kind of already leaning that direction with just one example.
Yeah, right... I don't think so... Homey don't play dat. They can bite me, LOL.Last edited: Aug 5, 2016 -
If 1070 mobile truly has 2048 cores instead of 1920 then I'll opt for 1070 SLI. Each one with the power of a 980Ti, now have two and overclock them...i can finally game at 4K lol.
If 1070 SLI isn't available I'm just going to get rid of my P870DM.
