Okay, that explains the high temps on Eurocom's review Video. Looking forward to see some benches and REAL life temps! :D

I was just thinking of that... how fair is it to give Prema such a great machine - and now he develop's the modded BIOS on it, instead of enjoying it for himself...

    Maybe Prema needs *2* ??

thats why he wants to go sli so he can mod the crap outta the vbios and just reflash it to stock instead of having to desolder vbios chips or rely on external testers all the time... ;)

I will do the best I can. I will have to setup the system now and install windows and drivers... could take a while.

By the way, the fans are quite loud, even when playing in the bios. I fear we have a jet engine when maxing them out... we will see.

I'm down with that, so long as the second unit gets donated to a needy overclocker to bench the **** out of after he's done...

BCLK works with XTU, but enough about XTU sucks on this machine that I avoid installing it. Now that Brother @Prema is going to get a machine of his own, maybe he will be able to figure out what needs to be tweaked to get BCLK working correctly in the BIOS. We were always so close, but so far. Should make things much easier that having someone on the other side of the planet and no direct access. Tweak, flash, test, report, tweak, flash, test, report... was a lot of fun and I would be honored to help more in the future... but, not the easiest way. I expect the BIOS for all P870 owners will get better once he has his beast.

I forgot what would be the best dram congiguration on this model. I have 2 modules. At the moment both are installed in the ram slots underneeth the keyboard. Is this the best config for dual channel with 2 modules or do I have to use the ones on the bottom??

On my old phoenix I have 4 modules and therefore this question never came up.

Is there a download link for the service manual by the way?

I don't think it will be supported according to several posters on this thread. One step at a time though. We're still waiting for the panel to be G-Sync certified.

No. Different tech. Although 3D takes high hz so that it can provide the data to each channel, each channel received 1/4 the data of a direct image. Specifically, a 2MP picture is needed for 1080, whereas 1080 3D had .5 MP per channel with two channels. At a certain point, the brain extrapolated the missing data for dimensions enough. It takes 8MP images for 4K and 33.4MP is being used for 8K development. As such, you would have 2MP per channel for 4K 3D, but the market didn't see enough sales to continue development. So just enjoy the images at the resolution and frequency refresh rates available...

I didn't notice the MXM slots being slightly farther apart in the DM2/3 versus the DM. That really blows. Clevo obviously wasn't thinking hard when they designed the DM. I wonder if a DM2/3 motherboard will fit in a DM chassis.

Tanner, why does the DM3 seem to only come with dual 1080sli and not a single card config? I'm returning my aorus to amazon and trying to order this but my budget is literally not a penny more than $3000. I want the ability to add a second 1080 at a later date, but for now I dont need one.

Unfortunately, you and I were in the same boat. I wanted to get a DM2 with a single 1080 to start but then I was told I needed to get another 1080, grid heatsink and SLI cable to effectively turn the DM2 into a DM3. No one is selling the DM3 with a single 1080 at this point and that likely remain true for a couple more months. So I'm going to spend the 4.3k now (more than I wanted to spend but less to worry about in the future).

    @Mr. Fox @Phoenix

I have been pondering whether to get a normal unlocked 6700K or Silicon Lottery Delidded 6700k. My primary use for the DTR will be gaming (about 70%) and the other 30% split amongst video editing of my workout videos and work related activity. I know the delidded 6700k will help with the video editing but I won't be doing much benchmarking. Should I get it or use those funds on other components?

SO wait, other than heatsink, etc what's the difference between a dm2 and dm3? Because I dont mind buying a heatsink and stuff at a later date, I just assumed spacing would be an issue in the DM2

There is no difference between a Silicon Lottery CPU and one off the shelf from any store. The only difference is they are cherry picked and more expensive. You pay extra for more of an assurance it will overclock nicely up to the clock speed they have validated each sample. The people overclocking 6700K the most (me and @Papusan and @GTVEVO and @bloodhawk and @ssj92) do not have Silicon Lottery CPUs and are having better results than those that do. @johnksss and @Meaker@Sager and @Prema will be joining us when they have received theirs. I'd be willing to be they won't be paying extra for a Silicon Lottery CPU. You can delid yourself for free.

I'm not slamming Silicon Lottery at all. They serve a valid purpose and I am glad they exist. Just calling your attention to the fact that getting a CPU from them doesn't necessarily mean you'll have the best and some that don't come from them are just as good or better. The benefit they provide is to help avoid drawing a short straw in the lottery. It seems the lottery has been much kinder to 6700K owners than it was to Haswell owners... Haswell has been all over the board with horribly inconsistent quality and a high frequency of poor binned CPUs.

If you're not going to e doing a lot of overclocked benching, I think going with the Silicon Lottery purchase would be a really poor use of your money... just my two cents.

let me tell you my experience

First system I had was a barebone Clevo P870DM-G with a 6700K that couldn't even run stable at 4.2 GHz x4 (on all cores that is). Next system which was a Eurocom Sky X9 also had a 6700K, this time a bit better, it was able to do 4.3 GHz stable.

I have seen many users here complain about high temps even at stock speeds. The 6700K is a hit or miss, 50-50 chance to get a good one. Even if you don't want to overclock, spending a bit more to get a Silicon Lottery one ensures your CPU will run cooler overclocked or not. Giving you better thermals and longevity since the CPU won't be running hot constantly.
This Silicon Lottery CPU I got can run @ 4.7 GHz not very stable, 4.6 GHz stable but with higher temps than I would like in a laptop for prolonged use (94C) or running super stable @ 4.5 GHz all day long with max temps of 85C no matter what I throw at it.

4.8 GHz chip, but that's rated to do 4.8 GHz in a desktop, so take a couple of 100MHz off for a laptop due to inferior cooling obviously

To add to @Mr. Fox 's post, i got my processor from HIDEvolution as well, and its the default 6700k. This was one week before they even started offering SL CPU's and were a Prema partner .
SL CPU mostly help when you use them in a desktop, and you need a guarantee that they will hit a certain clock speed for sure.

I have pushed the default chips in 2 x Sager NP9870-S's at work to 4.5Ghz no problem. Obviously they run a bit hot (no de-lid and using XTU) but VR and games dont push them that far.

    Hello Everyone.....

From reading all the posts and getting everyones feedback the 870DM2/3 could be a dream laptop for most of us. With 1080s in Sli in a laptop it is ideal for me because i am always looking for more power. Looking at some of the pictures of the heatsinks and supposed vapor chamber cooling it is going to be difficult to cool the second GTX 1080 in the DM3 and keep it from throttling under load. Hopefully Prema/SV7 can come up with a way to control the throttle on the second card. I am going to hold out on the DM3 until some of these issues has been worked out...

It also has something to do with the thermal paste being used. Those that choose to go with something less than Liquid Ultra are going to have a diminished experience compared with those that insist on the best cooling solution. In addition to that, we have seen some inconsistent heat sink quality. The best CPU in the world will perform far below its potential if corners are cut on either of these things. Thermal management is more important than cherry picking in my personal opinion. A crappy CPU will always be crappy, but a truly awesome CPU can appear to be a crappy one if you don't keep it cold. That was one of my first lessons a number of years ago from my OC sensei and friend, Brother @johnksss - heat impairs performance and limits clock speed potential 100% of the time. More heat also creates the need for more voltage, which produces more heat, and the vicious circle continues.

It looks like the SL 6700K yields have gone way up from when Phoenix bought his first P870DM's.

Back then the 6700K was below 50% hit rate for 4.5ghz, now it's up to 93% of SL tested 6700K's can do 4.6ghz! And, 4.8ghz was the top speed binned, now it's 4.9ghz.

SL publishes it's binning results, which give us a good idea how the pool of shipping 6700k's are shaking out.

Here are their results pulled from the Silicon Lottery product pages:
    https://siliconlottery.com/collections/all/i7-6700k

As of 5/3/16, the top 93% of tested 6700Ks were able to hit 4.6GHz or greater.
As of 5/3/16, the top 59% of tested 6700Ks were able to hit 4.7GHz or greater.
As of 5/3/16, the top 17% of tested 6700Ks were able to hit 4.8GHz or greater.
As of 5/3/16, the top 2% of tested 6700Ks were able to hit 4.9GHz or greater.

So given these numbers, and that you won't be Benchmarking, you could safely get a "normal" pull from the pool, and have at least a 4.4ghz stable CPU (laptop cooling).

Also, remember that SL is just a group that bins CPUs. You can buy from overclocks moving on from this chip in different forums or selling an awesome performing chip because it doesn't have that kick they are looking for under ln2, etc. But, as was true with haswell may be true with skylake - certain low voltage chips were furnaces. I saw that with my first chip. My second chip follows the normal rule of low voltage, low heat...

Once again, thank you all for your invaluable knowledge and answers. I know about overclocking on desktop (I can't remember when I ran a gaming rig stock) but I've always been timid when it came to overclocking on laptops or even DTR's. Temps above 75C scare the crap out of me.

Also the main thing people are missing is that there are a lot more tutorials / settings / people to guide, on the forum now on how to reach certain frequencies. When i first started with the system, there was barely anything around. I had to stumble around and bug Mr. Fox / Papusan for settings (Big thanks for all the pointers!). But eventually i figured it out. There were barely any around a few months back, specially for the Prema BIOS, most were XTU settings, that crippled your system if pushed too much.

The settings being used make a lot of difference and i learn something new every now and then that helps me fine tune my settings and push the processor further.

We are the type of customer that let shop owners turn their open-signs to display 'closed' the moment they see us riding into town.
I have no idea why though, since we are easily satisfied with CPUs running 5Ghz & GPUs 2.5Ghz 24/7 while using our triple PSUs to enjoy our four QHD screens boosted to 144Hz...

Time to let that go. No need to be scared, just be deliberate. A lot of us have been overclocking laptops for a long time and it's not a big deal. Everything works on the same principle as a desktop. You have some hardware and firmware limitations with laptops, but with the awesomeness of @Prema and his BIOS mods, we mainly have to deal with hardware gimping. If you know how to overclock a desktop the right way, you should be able to learn the ropes on a laptop in little or no time. It takes time to find the sweet spot for each CPU, but that's part of what makes it fun. And, that part is the same on a desktop. It's not a click and go gamer-boy project unless you have a stunted CPU model with locked down TDP and crippled multipliers.

Exactly what I was trying to get people to understand. Trust me, we are allot closer than ever before to desktop chips running basically the same type of cooling, but they will always have a slight to hella big edge due to what they can use to cool.(Dice/LN2/Phase Change/Chilled Water or AIO Water)
So those that cross into the 4.6 and higher group. Take a bow!

Don't worry, I may have a project that you will need to be my sensei on. :D And One you might find even funnier....

Running heaven now for 15 minutes with maxed out settings, g-sync deactivated, stock clocks, fans on max at 4300 rpm (jet engine mode ) , cpu undervolted by -90mV and of course removal of foil blocking the middle vent to give middle fan direct air intake:

Its sucking about 430 watt - so we definitely need 2 330W PSU...

Both graphics cards stay at the same temperature at 82 to 85 degrees. The card in the middle has now the same cooling headroom as the other one. CPU gets quite hot even undervolted at about 77 degree max.

why did the manufacturer cover up the air intake with a piece of foil?

So that the re-seller can use the same bare-bone for single and dual GPU configurations.
For SLI setups they have to pull the cover...some are just not aware or don't agree with this...

Probably just stupidity. Maybe they think it looks prettier to see blackness instead of looking at fancy hardware through the vent grilles. Aside from better cooling, I actually like seeing stuff through the grilles. But, I seldom stare at the bottom of it anyhow. If it was done for aesthetics, that is really silly IMHO.

Benchmarking heaven in 4k now with no overclock:

This thing is veeeery loud... the sound system of this notebook is irrelevant, the fans seem to be industrial grade versions, its definitely like a hairdryer... not good.

With all of these new notebooks coming out I still dont have a pressing need to get a DM3. Looking at some of the youtube videos posted of the 870DM of the older and i guess collecters edition at this point it can get REALLY loud. I have my Eurocom Panther 5 sitting on a 6 fan cooler with a fan pointing at it and I have AC in my home. I barely hear the fans spinning up and my 980Ms stay in the 40-55c range even under load. Im sure with the 1080s in SLI the 870DM2/3 will probably sound like a jet engine taking off to keep things cool. If its extremely loud that can be a bummer...despite the hardware....it cools..

Awesome, I love loud fans. I wish mine were louder. (I'm not kidding. I really do. I also love running street rods and motorcycles with open headers.)

Maybe find that sweet spot, highest spin rate before "noise curve" jumps up, and run it there. Hopefully that's fast enough to be cool enough to sustain highest performance at livable temps.

This is important, as noise is the one thing I do worry about with this massively powerful system.

Maybe find a performance point that drives the fans slower, below the range of irritant noise levels, and benchmark at that, then compare performance results to see if the extra performance at the highest noise level is worth the "pain".

I am also feeling that I should wait as my current system with a desktop class 980 GTX can play any game that I throw at it. When I upgrade, I want to feel a major difference and with the DM3, it's just a GPU upgrade and while that is a good one. The CPU is the same. I would have wanted a newer/faster CPU or one with more cores to make it a worthwhile upgrade

If this would be another vendors section of the forum that would probably a bad thing...but I guess for most people here that's great news! :D

EDIT: Remember in automatic mode the FANs never spin to 100%. The highest they will do is 60-70% at 80-90c (EC dependent).
Also there is still CCC to set your own FAN tables. ;)

Set the old 870DM to max fans and compare it to the DM3 Max fans. How much louder is the new model? Also if possible, run a heavy CPU bench to max the CPU fan only on both systems. How much louder is the new DM3 CPU fan isolated under full load?

I dont mind some fan noise because thats to be expected with the hardware that needs to be cooled. But anything over 52 decibels without headphones can be an annoyance even for benchmarking or casual gaming. LOL...

I dunno if this has been addressed yet but what's the difference between the DM2 and DM3? Are they the same minus gpu config?
