yep, im still astounded at how whisper quiet my dark knight is during non-stressing usage

oh gawd, that stock vbios is terrible! oc the gpus by 130 mhz and u gain 1000 points in graphics but lose physics score at the same time, wth...
and weird btw, shouldnt that amount to a higher total score instead of a lower one....?!
Sent from my Huawei Mate 8 NXT-AL10 -
@bsch3r
Much better!
That's a over 10k higher score than yesterday (both @ stock)!
Hard to advertise these Pascal...
It's like: 'Hey, our flagship has a guaranteed xxxxx score*
*the results may vary 30% depending on your ambient temps and mood of the firmware.
-
Maybe you can rise the value of pascal?
I think it would be realy helpful to undervolt pascal, but neither the cleco software nor nvidiainspector let me change the voltage. I guess using afterburner or precision x will be the same or should I try? -

thats exactly the problem i had with ADDA fans in 1gen DMs. - high pitch noise when spinning close to full speed.bsch3r likes this. -
The 6920HQ is also OC/tunable, just like the 6820HK. In the GT80s that have it it's tunable in the BIOS the same as the 6820HK.
XTU/TS should be able to adjust both the 6820HK and 6920HQ.
I doubt Asus limited either in the BIOS, as the main feature of both is they are the only OC/tunable CPU's in the Skylake lineup.Last edited: Aug 20, 2016 -
Maybe we should mail Clevo that we want Apower fans back like in the ZM instead of Adda fans that they use now.TomJGX, tanzmeister, bsch3r and 2 others like this.

In RL these are actually all unlocked:

Cool
I haven't seen the 6820HQ, 6870HQ, 6970HQ in use yet. I will check out their ark.intel.com specs, thanks! -
hmm, so prema's magic can make the HQ series overclockable with multiplier above 40 for all cores and allow power draw 45w+?hmscott likes this.
-
It's not prema magic in this case, tuning for those CPU's should be available in all BIOS's, CPU's unlocked by Intel.
The MSI/Asus laptops, all with out Prema BIOS, allow OC through Windows with XTU/TS, and some have the OC settings in the BIOS.
Prema's Magic can extend their joy further in Clevo laptops, but there are a lot more shipping laptops that have those CPU's than are shipped by Clevo
-
but if I'm not mistaken the HQ series multiplier is limited to 40 for 4 cores, while the 6820HK can go to anything beyond 40?hmscott likes this. -
Yes, you are mistaken, in my experience, at least for the 6920HQ, it's also OC'able over a wide range of multipliers, whether the CPU / laptop power/cooling supports it, that's something else, but the CPU's are unlocked like the 6820HK.
That's the point of Prema's and my post, to let you know there are other CPU's besides the 6820HK that are unlocked.iunlock likes this. -
-
No, because I don't have one, noone does, the 6980HQ must be a typo
If you meant the 6920HQ, ask around in the MSI GT80S threads, someone there should be able to show you.
One of the advantages of the 6920HQ over the 6820HK is that out of the box it Turbo boosts to 300mhz higher.
http://ark.intel.com/compare/88972,88969
That's nice for people that don't want to futz around tuning their CPU, or GPU, and just want good performance out of the box. That's most people, unlike us that like to tune.
It's too bad the 6920HQ wasn't put in more laptops.Last edited: Aug 20, 2016 -

What makes more sense for a single GTX 1080 GPU laptop. P870DM2 or P770DM.
I mean cost wise the difference is about $150 but the question is that which one will have better cooling/noise level for a single GPU? -
It's always a matter of size/volume/cooling, go with the larger one is usually the right answer.
But, the new 12v fans in the P870DM2/DM3 (?) have been reported as way louder even at idle than their PM870DM predecessor, so maybe check on what fan's are installed in the P7xxDM series this go around.
Maybe Clevo will swap in quieter fans soon...Last edited: Aug 20, 2016TomJGX, PrimeTimeAction and bsch3r like this. -

Clearly, there's some throttling going on, so GPU overclock is not benefitial right now. What's your GPU voltage under load, less than 1v? Try to set 4.3Ghz all cores with minus 150Mv, leave GPU's at stock and rerun firestrike. -
-
Both Throttlestop and XTU were capped at 40x on my GT80S 6920.
-
I guess you picked the wrong BGA-turdbook to tinker with
Try an MSI GT73/GT83.
There is a learning curve too, so maybe you will find the magic to make the Asus 6820HK tuneable.
-
What about the MSI BIOS OC tuning? I thought it needed to be set there first. Or, unset there first, if it's set to 40x there, you won't be able to go higher using tools in Windows.

4.1ghz, but the score isn't even as high as I got with my 5950HQ in the GT80 SLI-263 @ 4.1ghz:

Maybe some more tuning
Didn't you open a thread dedicated to this discussion?...should we move this OT for this thread there? -
Nop, see sig and the 6820HK ASUS can run 4.2ghz 4core
4ghz limit only on asus noob "extreme oc" software!hmscott likes this. -
Also, when I tune on Asus, I uninstall the Asus Gaming Center, or whatever it's called now, as it interferes with settings in XTU and MSI Afterburner or Asus GPU Tweak.
The packaged tunings Sport/Eco etc and other things in the Gaming Center get in the way. Try uninstalling that and rebooting.
Same goes for MSI Dragon Gaming tools, same pre-packaged tunings get in the way of XTU / MSI Afterburner / NVinspector and BIOS tunings. You only want one chef seasoning the settings - only run XTU *or* TS, not both.Last edited: Aug 20, 2016 -
Besides being soldered-on garbage, the 45W TDP amounts to nothing less than performance-robbing castration. If that power limit is hard-locked in CPU code these so-called "unlocked" chips are still gimped worthless trash. Multipliers being unlocked is truly futile and presenting them as such is deceptive with such pathetically limited TDP. Bottom line: 45W is a a cruel joke... literally. False advertising propaganda for gamer-boys gullible enough to believe it and consumers that are too ignorant to recognize it as hyped up lies.Last edited: Aug 20, 2016

Yeah, uninstall that Asus Game Center, maybe even the Asus GPU Tweak, and use XTU + MSI Afterburner or Nv Inspector alone.
-
The 6820HK at least has been pushed well beyond 45w, power unlocked and set power delay timeout to >28 - unlimited too, then you only need to keep it cool.
[i7-6820HK] Overclock Settings for 4.0GHz to 4.3GHz (Stable)
http://forum.notebookreview.com/thr...4-0ghz-to-4-3ghz-stable.787791/#post-10193541
The 6920HQ is also supposed to be unlocked power + settable power delay timeout, but I haven't seen a lot of reports.
There aren't as many hardcore tuners on BGA books - too bad, cause that's where they really are needed
-
Ah, yeah, you need to do the normal Nvidia 3d tunings, including disable G-sync / V-sync / DSR, and any frame rate limiters.
It' helps to tune the basic Nvidia 3d settings too, to use high performance, single monitor, and full performance not adaptive global settings. -
Please define "well beyond" so we can understand what that means and know whether or not it matters. Does that mean 4.8GHz and 100W? Or, 4.5GHz at 60W using excessive voltage and challenging thermals?
Edit: looked at the links... yeah, way too much voltage, too hot for only 4.3GHz and still massively gimped. Better than stock, yes... but still pretty pathetic. Can't see how many watts in the screen shots because there are too many unimportant sensor readings hogging up HWiNFO sensor space. -
@iunlock can answer this from experience, I am only relaying what I read, let him describe it.
You can also read that forum I linked, the first posts show 4.3ghz.
It's been reported 77w-80w range sustainable at 4.0ghz indefinitely with full fan's running.
At least on the Alienware's, which seem to be the ones getting the most tuning love.
The 4.5++ range is out of the question, it's not a desktop CPU, it's not a 95w CPU designed to allow extreme overclocking.
Even 6700k's in the P870DM are reported to run hot and loud at 4.5ghz+, unless it's sitting on an air-conditioner outlet

Indeed. The 6820HK runs pretty stable and we'll above the 45W TDP when OC'ed.
For what it is, not bad...some people forget that it's a Mobile CPU though lol...
Silicon lottery stinks though, especially on bga...nature of the beast. 6820HK should be able to run 4.1GHz on stock voltage. If not, then that's unfortunately a bad scratch ticket.

Can you please show us what "well above 45W" actually means? I cannot see max watts in the screen shots. I'd like to see the actual numbers rather than anecdotal verbiage.
-
Maybe some more tuning? I haven't even started tuning. I'm to busy trying to figure out why the voltage was set so high from the factory and the heat output and low fan speed. That was just to see what it would do. When I get around to actually putting forth some effort. I'll be sure to let you know.

77W at 4.0GHz is horrible. No wonder it runs so hot. That is not a respectable overclock and it's way too many watts and voltage for such a low multiplier.i_pk_pjers_i and Papusan like this.

The max I've seen with the 6820HK is 4.6GHz, twice out of the 4x 17R3's. One could hit 4.3GHz stable and the other stable at 4.1GHz. (Silicon Lottery)
I've only messed with the voltage a lot on the very first unit. Due to the 17R3 being just a general purpose laptop from editing, rendering, gaming etc...my goal has been to push it to the max on stock voltage.
Exteme OC'ing? That's what desktops and dtr's are for.

doesn't seem to interfere with throttlestop
I can pull 60w on 4ghz throttlestop bench, probably still too much voltage though.hmscott likes this. -
The P870DM CPU voltage was set high from the factory too, overheated for many out of the box without undervolt, or precise voltage setting, Prema BIOS settings help too.
Desktop MB's do the same thing from Asus, and other makes, it's conducive to stable operation out of the box. I always need to undervolt and eventually set precise voltages to get best performance and cooling.
That isn't unusual
Tune it!
Thanks for putting in the time to do a good job tuning the 6820HK, it needs it on the Asus and MSI - iunlock has done a great job on the Alienware implemenation, maybe check notes with him.TomJGX likes this. -
It's like anything with 2 programs making setting adjustments on the fly. It will work fine, until it doesn't
Don't use 2 or more programs that are capable of setting fan settings, voltage settings, memory settings, CPU settings - you are asking for trouble.
Some get into trouble using XTU for monitoring while vendor tool and BIOS are used for settings, and that causes problems. Use a monitoring only tool to monitor.
Use one good tool, and settle on it only. Monitoring only programs can interfere with readings too. -
I have the same experience with the voltage being set too high from factory lol...crazy right?
Powered by: Octa Core Exynos + 6820HKhmscott likes this. -
Again, talk with @iunlock for specifics, the 77w reading may be for other speeds. I'd like to read those notes from him too.
Being able to sustain 4.0ghz is a big deal for those laptop CPU's set to 45w max, where you can get 3.5ghz/3.6ghz sustained normally. -
If Pascal relying on low voltage and/or ambient temperature..., will this mean that Pascal can give higher graphics score if your Asic quality is much better? Even with stock clock?
