Clevo offers single 1080 GPU P870DM3 combo. Importer just don't order them.
Most who offer single GPU config, instead simply pull one 1080 and keep it for RMA or sell them as standalone cards for big bucks.

Going back to a disagreement from earlier in this thread. I learned a lot about laptops in the short time I've been here. Beside doing research on MXM, I really had no idea that there was a difference between a gaming laptop and DTR. I've used those terms interchangeably over the years. I also had no idea that a few DTR's have replaceable/upgradable CPU sockets.
Before I found this website, it was all the same to me, in regards to portable gaming laptops. As far as I was concerned, the real benchmark battles occurred on desktop. Lo and behold, I discovered the real battleground. I feel enlightened and excited about the prospects. In some aspects we are all the same. I want to squeeze every frame out of a game that I can and the benchers here want to squeeze every bit of performance for a higher score.
I am afraid for one thing. If I start benching, I might become addicted. I am extremely competitive (as I sure you all are). I originally only wanted a single card setup for gaming but I agree with a few, why castrate a beautiful monster...TBoneSan, deepfreeze12, Georgel and 9 others like this. -
I fail to see any logic in buying the top configuration and paying extra for that with the intent of selling pieces of it and settling for less performance. To me that doesn't make any sense whatsoever and I don't need to take a moment to think about it. 1+1=2 and 2-1=1... pretty straightforward math right there, bro. Buying 1080 SLI and selling one of the GPUs to offset the cost of SLI instead of buying one 1080 in the same has nothing to do with the future. I'm not following what you are saying. I know you're sincere in saying it, but I'm not connecting the dots.
No, I don't assume anything good about the future. In fact, I assume the worst and anyone that does not is living in a dream world. Ever year more and more retards reach the age of majority and gain power to screw things up for the rest of us with their namby-pampy wussified approach to technology and other things, including some that are more important than technology.
SWWWEEEETTT! That's extremely awesome. I'm so pleased we were able to have a positive influence in your life. So many times our contempt for BGA filth is misunderstood due to lack of understanding.
Those misconceptions are a huge ball and chain for us that know the difference, and we are an elite few. Most people assume they are the same thing. Nothing could be further from the truth. Those that understand least are the gamer-boys that think they are in the same league. They are not... that is only wishful thinking on their part. We share some similar interests, but the similarities end when it comes to minimum acceptable standards. For the hardcore DTR fanboys and overclockers like moi, it is a matter of self-preservation. Mediocrity always trives and multiplies like cockroaches.
Now, the really sadistic part of me hopes and prays that you do become addicted to overclocked benching. I want you and millions of others to join us. The master race can only stand to benefit from growth. The more addicted laptop overclockers there are, the better our chances of having a future that is not filled with disgust and despair over the pathetic state of gaming notebooks and the filth that naturally spills over our way because too many people don't know there is a difference.Last edited: Aug 21, 2016Ashtrix, deepfreeze12, temp00876 and 7 others like this. -
Here's a farfetched idea but hear me out. Have you guys ever thought about teaming up and forming your own OEM company aimed at the high end of the market. An example, Shelby taking a mustang, ripping out the useless and tuning the s*** out of it, then selling it for a premium?
Start out with a few barebones from Clevo, max and tune them out, label them the OOB Killer and make a good margin on it. I would be one of the initial few in line to get one. Food for thought.
Edit: Funding can be a bit of a concern but you can probably partner with some of the resellers to offset it. Both parties will win. The benchers can get their time with the latest and greatest tech, bench them and then sell it to a reseller for a decent margin, whom goes to sell it with marketing OOB Killer approved. Branding is everything.Last edited: Aug 21, 2016Crispy Duck, TBoneSan, Papusan and 5 others like this. -
Yes, I have been talking with a fellow from Armenia for a good while about this, providing some consultation and advice for his venture. It is in the early stages of development, but the idea is to give us all what we want... full on DTR with a billet aluminum chassis, 20-inch display, everything machined and milled to aerospace tolerances with no molded plastic crap... no compromises on anything... whatsoever. Literally, the laptop equivalent of a B-2 stealth bomber. He is in the process of working things out with vendors that would need to be relied upon for parts and manufacturing.
6700K would be the low end option, with hexacore, octacore i7 and Xeon CPUs being where the ultimate desire to go would be. The product we envision will use full sized desktop memory modules and have an external (optional) battery like those used on professional contractors tools like cordless circular saws and battery powered lawn mowers to avoid wasting space in the chassis. Size and weight will be determined by the configuration, not vice versa. No more tail wagging the dog.Last edited: Aug 21, 2016Crispy Duck, Nomad, Ashtrix and 13 others like this. -

We have also been kicking around the idea of using the Zen desktop and server CPUs, but the lackluster GPU offerings from AMD ( Always Manage to Disappoint) leave me a bit cold. I don't like idea of having AMD and NVIDIA components in the same chassis. That just seems sacrilegious to me. Oil and water don't mix well.
-
I no longer have an allegiance to a singular brand. I may still buy Team Green products, I've always had a soft spot for AMD. I have read from several sources that AMD is tiring of being labeled cost effective and may be they can start with Zen (which does interest me). I have zero issues with Zen and Nvidia being together. It's Intel that needs to be taken down a few pegs.

I would love to buy a taptop marked Fox Edition or Snowman Killer (IE. Can beat Papusan's benches) and guaranteed to overclock well -
DTRs are awesome! And, I know it wasn't the point of your post, but in regards to desktop CPUs inside a laptop ~10 yrs ago, been there and done that... Clevo was leading the way. Fond memories of the Clevo D900C.

Guys, I have a question, am planning to get a P870DM2 with a GTX 1080 from XoticPc in the near future (two months top), Is it worth wait for a G-sync 120Hz display?
-
Spartan@HIDevolution Company Representative
That wont come soon. I can't say the date due to NBA but if you buy it from XOTIC PC you don't get the Prema BIOS and the laptop won't be half as good as it can be with a stock BIOSsirana, Papusan, Chronokiller and 1 other person like this. -
It's all conceptual right now. I hope it comes to fruition and I know it will make a lot of people happy it is does. Lot's of unanswered questions at this point.TBoneSan, Papusan, ajc9988 and 1 other person like this.

That's a personal decision best made having a look at a g-sync display. Some people will say yes, others no. -

DTR laptops have come a long way in last 10 years or so. In those times, a casual person like myself wouldn't even think about buying a laptop with desktop CPU due to the issues it brought with it. But now it is the optimal solution.ajc9988, jclausius and Spartan@HIDevolution like this. -

I personally will not buy a laptop without GSYNC after having one nowbsch3r, PrimeTimeAction and Rage Set like this. -
I am waiting and I know a couple others are as well. It all depends on how you value G-Sync. Some view it as worthless and others would like to just have the feature (I'm in the latter). Is it necessary? Not at all. It's a reported 120hz 5ms panel, which is great. However with spending that kind of money, I want to squeeze every feature I can out of it.Papusan, hmscott and Spartan@HIDevolution like this.

Yes. Circumstances vary from person to person. But being a professional software developer / contractor for 23+ years and needing power with mobility to go onsite was a really big problem. At least it was a problem, until I ran across Clevo way back when.
In my book, Clevo has always been the trend-setter in this regard.Last edited: Aug 21, 2016PrimeTimeAction likes this. -

Nope not me. I'd still get it.
I predicted it was probably TN as most desktop gaming 144hz/120hz monitors as TN.
Bring it on! If you want colors etc for design get an external. Or perhaps a laptop built for design. This is a gaming machine!. Low response! High refresh!

(Note that the review link and info are for the LG panel, not the Clevo panel that uses the AUO display, still waiting on a review for those numbers)
I've seen really good TN panels, so if it was that good, then yes, it's the only way to get a fast enough response time to make 120hz worthwhile.
That 25ms might be a bit conservative, it was measured at ~34ms by notebookcheck recently on a different laptop brand.
Update: Found the review with a 120hz 5ms panel IDK if it's the same as the Clevo offering, and the response time measurements:

Response Time Grey 50% / Grey 80% 34.4ms

Probably going to need to offer both, for the people that want both IPS and 120hz, and don't realize IPS isn't fast enough to support it. People want what they want
Why not kick things up to 144hz on TN and 120hz on IPS??Last edited: Aug 21, 2016 -

Personally i am not too choosy regarding screen quality and I think a "good" TN panel is good enough for me. So i would choose a good 5ms TN panel over 25ms IPS one.
Nevertheless can a 25ms panel even be 120hz panel?TBoneSan, Papusan, hmscott and 1 other person like this. -

I didn't even notice that the 5 ms panel is TN, although my previous ASUS PG278Q was TN and it was good, I wish we can have a 5ms IPS / GSYNC screen @ 120hz. But even if it was TN I don't mind as long as it's 120hz / 5ms / GSYNCPapusan likes this. -

just get the 120hz 5ms without g sync monitor available now, been using 120hz external monitors with vsync triple buffered and all games will look smooth enough to not make a difference.

Ok, Which are the advantages of Prema's Bios?, also, Where can I get a P870DM2 with Prema's Bios in the USA? (am from Mexico but it's easier to me get it from there)

I personally don't care if it is TN so long as it can be calibrated and will still reach at minimum 100% Adobe RGB. If one did that but the other had full P3, I'd go with the full P3 over refresh rate...

(Note this info is for the LG panel, not the AUO, which is what Clevo uses)
No, and that's the problem, why people are complaining about the IPS 120hz 5ms (34.4ms measured) panel, as it's actual measured response time is too slow to support 120hz.
60hz is 16.67ms/frame
120hz is 8.33ms/frame
That 8.33ms/16.67ms is the total time it takes for the screen to refresh.Last edited: Aug 21, 2016hexum23 likes this. -

It would have to be a competent TN panel in terms of angles like my asus swift monitor.

I like notebookcheck to a point but they are not very technical and they are reading the response curves a bit off.
They are measuring black to white to black and grey to grey to grey.
Black to white to black is a minimum of two frames so divide the final figure by two to work out the average response time per frame
-
The logic is simple.
1+1=2? Okay here it is...
1. I can afford it and am able.
2. Securing the future of being able to run W7/W8 and not get sucked into the M$'s communist acts. (Uncertainty of anything past Kaby lake.)
3. Securing the hardware (heat sink) for SLI if I wish to want it later and/or to have the expandability there for the future as this may be one of the last of the Mohicans for W7/W8.

No matter how you read it, or slice it, it's not 5ms.
And, it's still no where near the minimum it needs to be of 8.33ms to support 120hz, right? -
I guess you missed the news
http://forum.notebookreview.com/threads/windows-10.762434/page-314#post-10313880
" Microsoft retreats, will extend Skylake PC support to normal support lifetimes
Customers cried foul, and Microsoft changed its mind.
http://www.pcworld.com/article/3106...e-pc-support-to-normal-support-lifetimes.html
"On Thursday Microsoft completed its retreat from its controversial policy regarding support for Intel’s “Skylake” processors on its older Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 operating systems. Now Skylake PCs running those OSes will receive the standard length of support."
So Skylake is getting full support through EOL for Windows 7 and Windows 8.1
Now we need MS to back off on the silly idea that they won't support new Intel hardware for Windows 7/8.1 during the advertised, contracted, promised supported lifetime of the OS's.
It's unprecedented for a major company to renege on it's contractual obligations, and get away with it without consequences.Last edited: Aug 21, 2016TomJGX, Chronokiller, Papusan and 1 other person like this. -

Keep checking, when you find out who has what, please post. We need measured response times from both.
It looks like different places in the world are getting different makes / models, with some regions not seeing them at all.
Maybe @Prema knows what Clevo has, as he is the one that posted the 1080p 120hz 25ms response time number as a potential option, can you say which model you are thinking of, and is that what is currently offered for Clevo builds? And even more important is the panel really fast enough to support 120hz?Last edited: Aug 21, 2016iunlock likes this. -
I saw that but that is only for the most critical updates like major security patches. They will still be kinda on the back burner. Wouldn't be surprised if they said that to stop the outcry.

You need to read it again.
Windows 7/8.1 are getting the same support as Windows 10, full support, not limited.
Limited support was offered a while ago, after they got a lot flak.
Now MS have retreated the whole way, and Windows 7/8.1 have full support on Skylake, just like Windows 10. -
Mythlogic said they should be the AUO panels. I'm guessing they got the info from Clevo.
How do other panels do in tests. For example the last Phoenix Clevo had a 25ms panel. Do panels usually test exactly at their rated response? I'm guessing not.

True it's not fast enough for 120hz in anything other than going from black to white in that review.
Best case (5ms black to white) is 200 fps
Worst case (20ms light grey to dark grey) is 50 fpshmscott likes this. -
Yeah know, and the one that was tested on notebook check was the LG. So we need someone to test the AUO.
