Realistically speaking, if 1080 SLI is an offered upgrade for the GT80, then one of the cards should fit in a P771DM. As for whether or not it'll perform similarly to one of the higher TDP cards... I could not begin to answer.

    I'm already knowing this... :)

I have to ask....How is this considered a "Vapor Chamber"?

dude! dont mix up your TDP classes! a 1080 would be like a friggin' 980 mobile and stuffing that in a ZM just aint happening :D so if we can work with an MSI 1070 (980M successor) id be a happy camper indeed :)

NORMALLY speaking, I have it under good authority that no current gen 15" chassis will be able to fit the 1070. This info is from multiple sources but prema saying an MSI 1070 fit into a P750DM, then that might be the only route to stuffing one in a P750DM etc

Yeah, I said that a while ago 1070 would be the best Pascal in MXM-B, and that's if you are lucky.

The grid of circle things, these keep the internal structure of vapor chambers intact. And there are copper sheets to compensate for the RAM, where for the core it is the usual ridge (? lack of better word), because it needs the extra cooling and it has to be the lowest point. Check the disassembled cooler of the new TITAN.

If Clevo or MSi don't put at least a single slide in their presentations saying - "Hey, nGREEDIA are morons, they ditched MXM, this would be the shape, size and specs of our GPUs for years to come", I see no reason to buy. The whole upgradeability is down the drain.

The full quote on what I think on the matter is here.

That's what I would like to know as well, the 1080SLI seems to have a unified heatsink for both cards, buy there is a section going towards the CPU heatsink, but the CPU heat sink appears to be separate.

so like the p370em, but now the cpu get extra heat from the gpu heatsink

    looks exciting!

edit: from the looks of it, it's a thermal bridge, not heatsink. maybe the cpu get slightly more cooling by offloading partial heat to the large sli heatsink.

the copper on the cpu side doesn't look like a fin array and has leftover thermal padding

you can see this concept in msi gt72, 16l1 z170

    I can't contain this boner :(

It looks like there may be screw holes on that section and I suspect it lays on top of the CPU heat sink and has a thermal pad between them to help keep things cool. Which is a great idea if done right. If it fits like crap such as the P750XX heat sinks it might not turn out all that great. A unified heat sink needs to be manufactured to aerospace tolerances across all components and essentially have a precision machined fit to be effective. I've never seen an example of any manufacturer that burned that many calories to get things right on their laptops. Hopefully, they got it right and it will not be inconsistent in mass production. That would probably be a first for Clevo. Can they do it? Oh, absolutely and without any doubt as long as they make doing so a top priority. Whether they will or not remains to be seen. If it's off by just a tiny bit it's not going to be a good thing.

Awesome that you guys discovered this! Right now I'm talking to my re-seller about an exchange/trade-in for the new model. ATM I'm live chatting with a sales associate I always talk to and they have an ETA around the middle of the month and they're already fazing out their old supply. They've treated me well before with trade-in in the past so hopefully the remaining purchase value is fair (if not, I'll just sell the 980ms).

Going to have to wait until i can see the top and a direct side view of this. Because it looks like heat pipes on top and no chamber in between. Speculation of course.

Now that does seem feasible there. Only this looks to be attached to the top of the fins for the cpu heatsink instead....

    Edit:

So...The next question becomes....Is this the 1080 heat shield? Because they still have the separate heat sinks as well....

Yup looks like unified heatsink for 1080 SLI and partial unified , partial separate for CPU.

I know nVidia stopped giving reference designs for MXM cards, but what has me curious is why did everyone make their custom designs different from what they already had. Like the Clevo 180W 980 fit in both P870DM and P775DM1.

Either way can't wait to see everyone's design.

I'm assuming MSI will release standard mxm 3.0b designs for 1060/1070 mobile.

Gotta give credit to MSI this time, they may be overpriced but they have their ways and resources to make things work. I personally own both an MSI and a Clevo and find both great but during this part of ownership and upgrades, MSI is being the better company imo. (And not just because of the obvious 2 year promise but because of what you're mentioning too.) :)

Adding pipes on top only helps. The main function of vapor chamber is to transfer heat up, where the pipes transfer it forward. I can only explain such large vapor chamber by having more working fluid and distributing the heat as much as possible. Apparently these chips are hard to cool. Another giveaway are the sealed edges, just like vapor chamber. But yeah, we have to see both sides to draw a conclusion.

Asus has been doing their own design for a long time. And now everyone else is being forced into this concept or go the new standard....Buy boards with bga pads attached. Then have their preferred chips solder on.

Not so sure transferring up is a good idea in a laptop. Unless your up is actually down.In the case of the Clevo branded laptops lol

Yeah, im just worried because of this. That slight section on the left might offset the contact surfaces by just a bit and no more proper contact on one of the cards. Hope its done the right way.

Actually it's a 2 *generation* promise, which is assumed to be Pascal then Volta, which might be 3 years after the original MSI Nvidia GPU upgrade promise.

The MSI warranty is usually 2 years, maybe that's what you were thinking.

Also something I've said multiple times and the first been A LONG time ago - MSi makes the GPUs for quite a handful of companies (most of them), so they really are the only ones to keep such promise. The question is, what the upgrade would be like with these hot chips?

I meant up from the heat source, then the pipes or radiators or both take from there.

+1 If it's indeed a vapor chamber, which I believe it is - DON'T EVER ATTEMPT TO "FIX IT"!!! @Mr. Fox is right, this is aerospace grade tolerances. The good thing about vapor chambers - they are perfectly flat.

Too bad MSI's Titan laptop has a mechanical keyboard and weird touchpad. Also no HK processor. Maybe if it had an HK processor, standard laptop keyboard/touchpad and proper unlocked bios I'd consider it lol.

I'm actually happy with the P870DM, just need moar powaaa. SLI would be nice again...miss 980M SLI.

The 6920HQ allows multiplier and tuning OC, just like the 6820HK :)

The 6920HQ should perform as well or better than the 6820HK. Both have the same TDP limits.

You might want to ask the GT80S 980 SLI guys if the BIOS has the OC settings like the 6820HK model, or if you need to use 3rd party tools in the OS.

You get used to the trackpad, and the keyboard is great the few times I have used them.

For me I use an external keyboard and mouse to preserve the laptop condition.

Over the years I have found that the builtin keyboard / trackpad wear out - or worse I drop food or liquid into them and need to pay for replacement.

I enjoy using wired / wireless gaming keyboard / mouse / trackpad of my own.

Keep in mind my laptop is still a laptop. I take it everywhere and don't use external mice or keyboards etc. I don't think I'd get used to that touchpad.

Also regarding the HK vs HQ. Either way I'm positive the laptop is power limited on purpose. If I cannot get beyond 4.5Ghz on the CPU it's useless to me in benchmarking. ;)

I actually don't think I've seen anyone hit 4.5Ghz+ on those CPUs yet. I think 4.3Ghz was the highest I've seen.

Also I like being able to instantly jump from stock to overclock. This took literally 2 whole minutes from going from stock to 4.6ghz then benching the cpu after: [Don't know if you guys can use Throttlestop to OC on demand on the GT80]

I could easily ignore the weird external elements, but the BGA is completely unforgivable. I'll never settle for any BGA laptop masquerading as 'high performance' no matter how the rest of the machine is built. BGA is a permanent disqualifier. Just like I won't eat my neighbor's dog droppings in my front yard. But, I might scoop them up and put them on the steps by the front door or or toss them onto the hood of his car when nobody is looking.

I am totally happy with the P870DM-G. There is nothing wrong with it. The effed up part is what they're doing to the new GPUs to screw us out of being able to use two of them in SLI. Had they used the 180W 980 PCB form factor we would all be doing fine. I don't want a single 1080. I've been an dual GPU fanboy for years and now that I have two laptops with only one GPU, I miss the extra horsepower and want it back.

Maybe we will get lucky and MSI will make something with 1080 SLI that uses the 180W 980 size PCB.

I believe it is like the 180W sample shown on Eurocom's GPU upgrade page. That's what I was testing for 980 SLI in the Sky X9E when they asked me to send it back. It is the same width as standard MXM, but longer. Fits in the chassis fine. I don't know that they were 180W in the MSI machines though. I haven't paid attention to MSI because they sell laptops with BGA CPUs. But, I might need to pay closer attention so I can know the best place to get GPUs for upgrades to a real machine.

To be completely honest here, if MSI stepped up and made a socketed CPU laptop along with keeping their promises about MXM then I'd have to switch to them permanently. Desktop CPU is one of the only and main things clevo has over MSI and what they are doing with the GPU's right now might end up costing them the game...They should tread carefully..

No all desktop 980s are custom PCB designs. The GT80 Titan did use 980m SLI though which uses standard mxm 3.0b.

MSI promises two generation upgrades so we should see at least 1070 SLI in mxm 3.0b form.

I'd do the same, but ONLY if the BIOS were totally unlocked or @Prema was available to unlock it and ONLY if they didn't gimp the power handling. By my count, that's tree strikes... BGA CPU, crippled BIOS and power handling gimped. They must be sleeping with people from Alienware.
No thanks... Not for me. Second best ain't good enough.

Now this is the end of a standard. When each laptop uses a modified "standard" and no idea what if they are compatible with each other.

I am just thinking in terms of heatsinks and spacing, no idea if the MSI 1080 for GT80 would work in P870DM gen 1 or they can even be properly cooled.

Actually according to our Lord and Savior, the MSI cards work with the P870DM.

Well clevo seems to be hitting somewhere worse than gimping some power from what we can see, lets just hope they won't push people over.

This will be my last GPU upgrade until I get a new laptop. I don't plan on getting one until Skylake-E or minimum of Cannonlake+Vega/Volta... If 1070 works in the ZM AND a better heatsink comes with it (with proper QA on them for contact), it sounds good to me!

We are in the final 2 week stretch, as I've seen the Aug. 16-20 date on multiple sites saying they can't review until then, although they have them in hand. Patience is a virtue and we should head warnings and information from those in the know. We'll be fine, overall.

It is a shame on the P870DM not doing SLI, but life will go on. Let's hope when MSI no longer supports MXM, we will go to modified, but somewhat standardized, PCBs connecting to actual PCIe slots in these machines to continue with modularity (speculation at this point and years out). I just want some continuation in GPU upgrade...

As to the vapor chamber, I like that they are doing such to spread the heat from the hot spots and hope they continue on this line. I'm wondering if the part contacting the CPU heatpipes can offload well the CPU extra heat, potentially. Either way, just a couple weeks to find out.

ah, yes! my bad :) msi single 980 was 150W...

the M5500 would be an interesting card, were it not for the fact its a quadro (thus insaaaanely expensive) and i havent even seen an offer for machines sporting that gpu, let alone the standalone card...

We should stop the infighting. As long as Clevo will push the new laptops and we can upgrade, we should all be happy :D

I wonder what chipset the new Clevo uses? Will it be usable with the new CPUs?

Also, to change parts, we need to take off entire heatsinks? While somewhat cool to have great heatsinks, this means that many of us will have a harder time upgrading.
