How is the fan on the P751TM-G? Is it really hot and noise on the 8700K compared to 8700? Any thoughts?

It can get pretty loud. I havent tested an 8700, but on the 8700k with an undervolt and locked at 4.7GHz, its fine in gaming. Doesnt normally get that hot on mine. The GPU fan is the worst (gtx 1080)

Undervolted it's likely not too far away from the 8700 which is just running a lower voltage/clocks.

Okey. So then I might as well go for the 8700? Performancewise are there any noticable difference? I dont really plan to overclock the cpu. Have never done that before. :)

Be sure you are comparing delidded CPUs. I'm sure 8700k delidded is way more cool than 8700 without delid.
How do you lock the 8700k at 4,7 GHz without OC? It is supposed to reach 4,3 GHz on all 6 cores and 4,7 GHz in only one. Also which undervolt are you using?
I have mine at 4,3 with -140mV right now.

Well, thats with an OC. Throttlestop is what I am using, my chip works with a -80mV undervolt.

Yes, any power limit raise or frequency raise over stock settings is an overclock. It does not support multi core enhancement to lock all cores at the single core turbo clock.

I can't overclock the GTX 1070. Both using clevo app or MSI afterburner I increase little by little Core clock but it remains at 1367 Mhz which is pretty low for a 1070. Witcher 3 runs over 70 fps with nearly all ultra (only grass on high) so it may be a clock display, but both apps show the same. The temps are always below 65º so can't be a heat issue.
Any idea or experience with that?

Can you run you Firestrike and post your results? The graphics score would tell us if it was clock reporting issue or not.

I'm going to say that that is simply a reporting bug. Here is my max OC 1070. You're not that far behind it. I'd say you're running around 1600-1700mhz

Good to know. What do you use to OC it?
I tried 4k witcher 3 but was always below 50 fps in low settings and wanted to see the best it can be.

I was using MSI AB for that. Think it was +150/+350, but I dont have the laptop anymore to verify. 50fps sounds about right at 4k. I was at 30fps in the last expansion on mine, but was playing with gsync so it was bearable.

Compare it at 1080p to the benchmarks out there for a good baseline comparison. 4k is always a big ask.

Tried GPU-Z and the clocks seems closer to what you say (boost 1733 Mhz) and the modifications done with the clevo OC app seem to apply. When I have time I'll do some benchs with OC. Thank you.
At 1080p works like a charm, but reading some comments in other forums and videos I had unreal hopes of getting 4k@60 fps without filters and lower settings. Anyway the temps are pretty good (max <65º) with maximum usage at stock getting ~70 fps in witcher 3 near all ultra.

It's 4x the number of pixels of 1080p so yeah it's very hungry on GPUs.

Well I pulled the trigger on a new NP9155. Went with 2x16GB 2400 RAM, 1060 Card with the 1080P screen (Nearly 50 years old and have hard enough time seeing a 1080P, let alone a 4K on 15" screen). Decided to do my own SSD drives. I went with two 960 EVO M.2 500GB drives that I will run mirror in RAID, and a 3rd 2.5" 500 850 EVO. I have had SSDs in the past fail, and I can't afford to lose any development work. One day of work is worth way more than the 2nd drive.

I'm software developer and need a laptop so I can go into the field and do onsight work.

This will be my 4th Sager since 2008. They all still work, I just outgrow them and upgrade every 2-4 years. My oldest has been delegated to running a CNC milling machine. Funny how a $5K laptop can become obsolete. But, how many 10 year old laptops do you see still doing anything useful?

My current workhorse is a NP7338 that has been my daily development system for almost 4 years now. Have had a few times it didn't want to power on using a battery. That's the main reason to replace it. It's my main tool for all the development I do and I can't have it fail on me. I'll probably just use it as a backup for the new machine.

I'll be putting Windows 10 Pro. I'm currently running 8.1 Pro on my other machines.

Now seems to show in OSD correctly since GPU clock got to 1900Mhz without core clock modifications.

With +400 on memory and a curve modification got this:

Any issues with the audio driver? My unit came with a preinstalled Sound Blaster Connect (SBC), and it now says that "[my] audio driver cannot be detected. Please check [my] connection."

I'm having a hard time troubleshooting this one to work. My speakers work, but it's not as loud as before (because, I think, SBC was amplifying it).

Device Manager shows that my audio inputs and outputs (Microphone, Realtek Digital Output, Speakers) are all from Realtek High Definition Audio. Sound, video, and game controllers are NVIDIA HD Audio, NVIDIA Virtual Audio Device, and Realtek HD Audio (v. 6.0.1.8302).

EDIT: To get SBC working again, I had to revert the Realtek HD Audio driver under the "Sound, video, and game controllers" section of the Device Manager to 6.0.1.8254.

Does that mean I cannot update it ever?

EDIT 2: Sound is abnormally low even at full blast.

I'd leave the sound driver unless you have issues normally. Do you have any USB sound devices?

Apparently, you need to turn on the Sound Engine from SBC. I was just so used to the volume levels when I first got the laptop. If the Sound Engine is off, it's probably defaulting to the laptop's volume capabilities which I find are very weak.

I run both ports no issues, it should not be the cause.

Keep the machine in a constant temperature environment where possible (no being left in the car or panty over night).

Keep the heatsinks clean of dust and the back slightly elevated (soft drink bottle caps under rear legs sort of heights)

    Avoid power viruses like furmark.

Get a surge protector for the power brick input.

    Are my main tips.

I'm sure this is not your issue, but years ago I blew out my VGA port on a 1 month old HP laptop by trying to plug it in at a client's site. I was plugging into a projector but they didn't have the cables labeled correctly and what I was plugging into was the OUTPUT from the projector. I saw a few sparks before I realized what happened. From that point on my laptop would not output a very good signal. The rest of the laptop seemed to work. I think it blew out the Green driver of the RGB section. They had to replace the whole motherboard.

The 8400 will be slower under certain situations gaming otherwise with the two side by side it would be hard to tell.

Meltdown and Spectre variant 1 where OS only fixes, while Spectre variant 2 requires a BIOS code update as well as an OS fix.

As of now Intel has made 3 'Spectre 2' BIOS code updates to fix the issue. Code v1 was beta and Code v2 was released to public in early Jan and then quickly dismissed as causing shutdowns.
Also the code alone won't activate the 'fix' and requires an additional OS patch which can be manually enabled and disabled:

    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us...-disable-mitigation-against-spectre-variant-2

Which is good news as I can go ahead and include fix v3, once Intel gives the OK, and user will still be able to enable/disable it on choice.

Hi i purchase P751TM1 with specs i5 8400 + GTX 1070 and 120 hz screen . Laptop hold well low temps on CPU arround 60 c after 3dmark 11 benchmark and games same. I received with 230 watt power brick . I'm going to upgrade CPU to i5 8600k and my question is do i need 330 watt power brick ? or 230 watt will be enough?
    Thanks

You don't much headroom again. And forget overclocking. But it should work with stock. Even fully locked 45w 7700Hq and 1070 in AcerBOOK will suck out all power from 230 Psu with max load on both Cpu and Gpu (Furmark+P95).

I don't know who you bought from, but LGA processors and 1070 should really have 330w psu.

Also Eurocom Tornado F5 Notebook with i7-7700K and 1070 was pushed out with 230w psu. Eurocom offer both choices (230 or 330w psu)
