UV usually stands for under volt and OV for over volt.

Can someone tell me if it is ok to remove the heatsink for the cpu and gpu to replace the thermal compound? I am afraid to cause the tab says if disassembled, needs new thermal plate. But i see a bunch of similar laptops dissembling and replacing paste. Please help.
-
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
It's ok so long as you replace the thermal compound as the tab says, look up some guides to get clued up on the best methods.
-
Would you know of any good guides? Can't seem to find one.
-
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
Just put a rice grain sized blob on the gpu and a small thin line (not to the edge, a centred line 2/3rds of the length of the chip) for the CPU.
-

There are several application methods for the TIM, but doing it as Meaker outlined works best. The mounting pressure of the heatsinks is enough to get a good spread on its own.
-

It's the best way to avoid air bubbles on smaller chips like the ones in your machine (does not work so well with a titan-X which uses the X method
)

Hey all, I'm looking for a small form factor 11" laptop i7 quad core with 16gb of ram and there are so few options out there but this seems to fit the bill. I have a Macbook air i7 11" and love it but need something to run Linux for virtualization dev. I was looking at buying a used one of these W110ER but maybe you guys can help me get informed - why did they (Cleo/Sager) stop making small form factors such as these and are there known problems?

There was no issues with the computer that ended production of this model. This size was only around for this model. It may just not have been popular enough to continue production of it. -

Market demands and conditions change too.
-
Even though this is ~4 yr old system, how big a difference would the 3610QM i7 processors in this compare to the new 4770 vs the i7 6700K? skylake in the Surface Pro 4? In general what is the real world difference in performance between this laptop and the hypothetical Surface Pro 4 i7 quad 16gb ram?
-
Support.1@XOTIC PC Company Representative
The 4770 is about 25% better in benchmarks, and 6700k is about 40% better in benchmarks it looks like. Not exactly sure what the processor in the Surface Pro 4 is yet. I don't think they announced all the specs yet, have they?
-
They haven't but it's pretty much a sure thing it will have silverlake i7, considering how powerful the ones in SP3 is. If they don't do more powerful it will be a big surprise.
-
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
It will be the difference between an ulv dual core and full fat quad core.
-
I've opted to go the W110er route picked up a used i7 quad core 16gb, going to put SSD in it.
What do you guys think about this external PCIE video card adapter? Anyone given it a try?
http://eshop.sintech.cn/laptop-expresscard-to-pcie-express-16x-video-card-adapter-conve-p-947.html -
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
It's quite bandwidth limited by most slots.
-
And, this notebook doesn't offer an ExpressCard slot....
-
Got the i7 quad core 16gb, and so far I'm loving it. The power supply is bulky though - Has anyone found a suitable smaller and lightweight alternative?
-

Any slim 90w - 120w psu with the 5.5 x 2.5 barrel connector should do. The 90w tragus I have for my machine is pretty good.
-
Anyone tried Windows 10 yet on their W110ER?
-
I have been wondering this myself. Especially interested in knowing if anyone using the UV mod has tried Windows 10. I had errors attempting the free upgrade so I am waiting for Threshold 2 so that I can do a clean install using a USB drive and inputting my Windows 7 key.
-
I'm using Windows 10 but I don't have the UV mod (whatever that is).
Off topic, but is ~98C abnormal temperature at load? While converting a movie using handbrake, my temps are in the high 90's.
-
Holy smokes yes, 98c is probably the highest it can go without massive throttling (if it's not already).
What are you running? Back when I had mine w/ 3920XM @ 4Ghz I was barely in those temperatures for a Prime95 small FFT run. I'd reapply your Thermal Paste, else your heatsink isn't screwed in tight enough.
The OV/UV are Bios modifications offered by Prema that allow you to either have an OVervolted GPU (Higher overclock possible), or the UV which keeps the same clocks but lowers the voltage to the GPU core. Thus lowering temperatures and lowering Power Consumption. -
I was converting a movie using handbrake. I'll try to apply some thermal paste thanks for the suggestion. What temperatures should I look at peak?
-
Yeeehaw.
Finally got WWAN + WIFI working in this notebook in Windows 8 and Kali Linux. I managed this with the swiss army knife of half height mPCIE cards, the Option GTM671W:
I've been using this as a hypervisor at home for years as without a WWAN connection it was useless to me for the purpose I had bought it for(mobile workstation).
My original attempts to use a GTM671W as an all in one card proved useless. I kept getting the "Insert a SIM" message that seems to be dreaded around the place.
So I repurposed it and forgot about it.
My mobile work requirements now need virtualisation and seeing as I have a 3840QM and 16GB in this thing, I figured, what the hell, I may as well revisit the WWAN issue.
The four main hurdles from getting the GTM671W running were lack of SIM slot, no drivers, lack of SIM visibility and no antennas in appropriate bands.
To solve these, in order, I did the following:
Purchased a solderless USIM adapter, to provide a sim slot via the mPCIE interface. This one is a no brainer and has already been mentioned in this thread way back in the day.
Downloaded the Windows 7 WWAN Drivers for the Samsung Slate 7, which shipped with the GTM671W as its built in WWAN/WIFI/GPS device.
The Option hso drivers have been stable in linux for many many revisions, so there is no need for drivers over there.(I found wvdial is the best way to get this running easily)
This results in a modem that get a carrier signal etc, but cannot see a SIM and as such cannot authenticate to UMTS networks.
After screwing around with a spare motherboard and my CRO, I found that the various SIM pins are not isolated and appear to be arbitrarily wired into the mainboard, perhaps they were looking at an option of an mainboard based SIM slot at one stage.
This was breaking the GTM671W when I tried to see the SIM, which was reporting 2,0,0(SIM Error or not inserted) when I gave it the AT_OBLS command.
Perhaps the GTM671WFS works ok when you correctly set AT_OSIMSEL, but this command has no meaning with a GTM671W as it has no onboard SIM slot.
Anyway, to fix this, what I did was attach some electrical tape(secured with CA glue) across the USIM adapter similar to this:
This corresponds to pins 8,10,12,14 and 16 on the mPCIE slot, which are typically SIM reserved.
Make sure you are precise with this, if you cover over pin 6(to the right of the black rectangle in the image above), you'll lose your 1.5 volt line and your card will behave very strangely...
As for the antenna, when I originally purchased the GTM671Ws, I also grabbed a Quintus penta-band antenna from here:
http://www.embeddedworks.net/ante530.html
I have ordered another one, to give me an aux antenna, although, I'm not sure if this will improve reception much on the Option card.
I've tucked the antenna into the perfect space under the hard drive and fed the cable back through the backup battery slot, you can see it peeking out there under the SATA connector with www written on it:
There is probably space for the auxiliary in here too, but I'll test out various orientations when it arrives and see what works best.
All in all this was a pain and took a lot of time troubleshooting, but on the plus side, I have a spare motherboard and WWAN card, that should keep this machine going for years.
Now that this is all working together, I am very pleased with it. I've also loaded on the Prema UV bios and I am impressed with the results!
Pros from doing this I see are as follows:
Integrated WWAN and GPS while retaining WIFI.
Good reception on one antenna, with possibly even better results with 2(tests to come).
Neat install, with no need for cutting or modding the chassis.
Cons are as follows:
No 5GHz wireless(not an issue for me)
No Bluetooth(not an issue for me) -
its crazy how this PC can still play FALLOUT 4! heres my rig. I'm considering selling it soon though :/

Hi!
Anyone know of a place, where I could get some parts for this PC - preferably somewhere in Europe? I am really glad about it, and would really like it repaired.
Its only the cabinet which has taken damage. Looks like the bottom or hinge which would need replacing.
Thanks guys! -
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
I would advise inspecting exactly what is damaged and then asking your reseller if they can source anything for you.

Hey all. I'm at my whit's end I am running Windows 10 and the stupid VIA audio driver had never fully worked since I got this laptop. I'm starting to do some gaming so need the headset and mic to work. I would always have to manually set speaker to default device and then manually set headphones as default when plugging in a headset. Mic has never worked.
So I've since done the method of "rollback driver" to get the headset/speaker auto sensing to work. So at least I have that going for me. However, mic still not working. Any ideas? -
Just fixed this a few hours ago. The VIAtech website has a whole load of audio drivers for Windows 10 (and others) to download, fixed my issue. The driver pack was like 125mb. http://download.viatech.com/en/support/driversSelect.jspADAS1223 likes this.

Is there a consensus here that if I am experiencing the unexpected power-offs within a few minutes of gaming, I should look to clean off old thermal grease and then apply high quality thermal paste? Is that what appears to solve this issue?
My W110ER is now 3 years old (!) and I've never had an issue or opened it up before. Any other recommendations?
thanksLast edited: Jan 7, 2016 -
are you using the 130watt power brick that came with the laptop? that only happens to me when im running off the battery and not plugged in. once im plugged in to a 100+ watt brick, i can game for hours. hope this helps
-
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
It's worth checking temps, but if they look ok then the power brick does become the prime suspect.
-
Really? I still use the original (and rather large) LiteOn power brick that the W110ER came with. Never had a problem until recently. Any power bricks recommended?
-
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
Any named (lite on, delta etc) brick of the same spec or the targus 90w slim adapter I use is pretty good too.
-
Should I not be looking for something 120+ Watts? I think the original it shipped with is 135W.
-
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
I suggest checking the volts and amps required (listed on the brick). It's the first step to figuring out the correct one. I just quickly looked it up but could be wrong.
-
Actually, I just got a cooling pad for the W110ER and that actually allows me to play (although I didn't push it beyond 25 mins, and it used to power off after max 5 mins). So I'm pretty sure the issue is heat. So I will be operating on my laptop and repasting with Liquid Ultra later. Wish me luck!
-
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
Which is why I suggested you look at those first
-
So I did a repaste on the W110ER using the Liquid Ultra and gaming is back on the menu! (First time doing a repaste and it was actually pretty simple thanks to youtube). Are there any other suggestions of things to do with Clevo? I updated to Windows 10, but apart from that (and the repaste) never really changed anything with it.
Thanks for your help. -
max out the memory, get a better ssd, now that you repasted and have a decent powerbrick, you can look at overclocking with prema's overvolt bios, maybe even check the best cpu you can plop down in it. the possibilities are endless!

Overclocking will give the most direct speed boost.Nefis likes this. -
Hi all, so I've found I'm running into the same problem with overheating as Nefis and I'm getting ready to do a repaste. However, I was thinking why not do a cpu upgrade at the same time? So, I was wondering, what is the best cpu that I could slot into the w110er? Thanks!
-
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
What CPU do you have now?
Any 45W CPU should be fine so up to the 3840qm. -
I have just done a clean install of Win10 plus a repaste, and my W110er feels like new! Well, almost: I noticed on XTU that there is no way to lower the clock speeds nor to undervolt. Let me guess: it's locked by the Bios, and only the Prema Bios would allow undervolting, correct? (obviously, I don't feel ready at trying to install it :/).
Nefis likes this. -
Better SSD is on the list. Any suggestions? (I was thinking SanDisk Extreme PRO 480GB). As for CPU, I have a i7-3630QM, and I don't know if its really worth upgrading to a 3840qm (still expensive). Thoughts @Meaker@Sager?
Speaking of endless possibilities: what about the GPU? Does anyone know if its possible to upgrade the W110ER's 650M?Last edited by a moderator: Mar 13, 2016
