A fellow crazy who wants the 3820QM in this machine. I salute you.

So I had a chance to go by Microcenter yesterday and play with coolers for this laptop. All the Images together.
I ended up taking home the Cooler Master U2 as it has a larger contact surface with my legs and was actually usable on my lap. The U1, with its smaller contact area put just enough pressure on my that area of my leg just above the knee that I noticed it.
The Laptop fit inside the curve of both coolers. With the U2 the fans could stay in place and with the U1 you would have to pop the fan over to the topside if you wanted to put the laptop on the inside.
Testing today with prime95(Inplace large FFT) and Kombustor(Full screen, Full Res, DX11, no postFX) I got the following results after 1 hour on each condition:
Flat on table with a table cloth:
CPU Core Max: 95C and it was throttling.
dGPU: 86C and no throttling.
On U2 Cooler with no fan:
CPU Core Max: 92C and no throttling.
dGPU: 82C and no throttling.
On U2 Cooler with two fans:
CPU Core Max: 90C and no throttling.
dGPU: 79C and no throttling.
Idle temps normal: (from memory as I'm wanting to use my computer now)
CPU Core Max: 62C
dGPU: 57C
Idle temps on U2 Cooler with two fans:
CPU Core Max: 51C
dGPU: 45C
U2 Gallery:
The only downside to this cooler is that the rubber grips are not wide enough to actually help hold the laptop in place. It fits just within them. The grips on the bottom of the laptop are enough to hold it in place but it would have been nice to have the added grip.
U1 Gallery:
This one fit the laptop perfectly. Except that you could not have the fan attached and place the laptop within the cooler.
Notepal EVO:
It was possible to position the laptop over the cooling zone but I wasn't really happy with the idea of the center zone or how well the laptop would stay in position.
CM SF-19:
I took this one just to show the size difference.

WOW! Nothing else, I really needed this. +1 great work dude

Does anyone know what size of a silicone keyboard protector can fit this laptop's keyboard? I doubt the ones designed for macbook will hold - will the one designed for acer notebooks fit? i.e. this one: Amazon.com: Laptop Keyboard Protector Cover for 11.6" Acer Aspire One 751H/752/721/ZA3/1810T/1830T/1410/1825PTZ/Timeline 1820PT/farrari one 200 Series: Electronics
edit: no, it doesn't fit it looks like. I compared the pictures of the keyboard and the actual cover.
Does anyone know if there's one that does fit? -
Thanks! I think I'm going to be very happy with the U1 I purchased.
-
I'd love to know the answer to this one as well. I hate dirty/grimy keyboards--I really wish they'd stop making black keyboards, and go with the aesthetically pleasing silver/white keys.
-
Is it possible to just take the bottom panel off and set this guy on a cooler with a large fan? Would there be much of a concern if you do this frequently?
-
Yep just listed my piece of crap MX11 on eBay. It's has random lockups .
Even locks up boots from Memtest86.
As soon as it sell I am buying.
Who's selling thistne cheapest ? -
My God I feel so stupid... So I finally play my first game on this little lappy (Medieval II Total War) and then... It's lagging horribly! I can remember lurking this thread and something about setting it up so it uses the 650m and not the HD 4000. I don't have the time to go through this thread and search doesn't come up with the answers I need. How do I use the 650?
-
Quickest way is to:
- right click desktop
- choose "nVidia Control Panel"
- click on "Manage 3D Settings"
- click "program settings" tab on right
- click the pulldown menu to see if game exists there first, otherwise...
-- Click "add"
-- browse for the game .exe file and select it
- from the "preferred graphics processor" pull down menu choose nVidia.
- click "Apply"
You're done.
Some games for whatever reason revert to the Intel GPU and I have no idea why. -
Can everyone who has one of these machine report in battery life with light use? I don't expect you to do a full test or anything, just want to make sure my battery is ok or possibly faulty. Basic web surfing 30-40% brightness on balanced mode I only get about 3.5 hours.
-
Not sure how much of a difference it makes but I while I was doing my testing today I found out the Samsung 1600Mhz that Mythlogic uses is the LV version and runs at 1.35 volts. That plus having one of the less power hungry SSDs might be part of why I get a extra half to three quarters of a hour longer then you on average.
-
That explains the NotebookCheck review's long battery life... god damn
SSD's do wonders
-
Thing is I have an SSD too, but I guess the WD SiliconEdge Blue isn't much of a power sipping SSD. The 1.35V RAM shouldn't matter much though, that's only 0.15V at likely less than 1A so < 0.15W which won't make much more difference than a few minutes.
Perhaps the SSD was doing a lot of TRIM operations, I dunno.
Based on Storage Review's reviews of the WD, Intel 320, and Samsung 830:
WD SiliconEdge Blue 256GB
Intel 320 300GB
Samsung 830 256GB

First, want to thank you all of you guys for all the great information.
Ordered barebone from RJTech as I have most of the parts lying around. I did upgraded the Wifi to Intel 6230 when ordering from RJTech. I received it this Tuesday so didn't have much time to test it yet.
Spec:
CPU: i5 2520M (Sandy Bridge) Used from eBay
RAM: 4GB (2x2GB 1.5v Kingston) already have
SSD: Corsair Nova 128GB, already have
Wifi: Intel 6230
Temps:
CPU
Idles/light internet surfing: low to mid 40s C
Diablo 3: mid to high 70s C
Battery Time:
Did not have time to test it out yet but here is what I observed during light internet surfing while putting my 9 months old son to sleep with him on the bed.
20% battery used/hour per the battery icon down in the taskbar.
In theory, it should last around 5 hours. I will have to do some more test to confirm as I may have got a bad battery as HWMON shows my battery wear is already at 3%
I hope this helps. -
This is a pointless post, but I'm now an NP6110 owner
After going through the first 2 iterations of the M11x, it's wonderful that I can stay with the same form factor--after I read the Alienware discontinuation notice, I couldn't have been more disappointed.
-
Congrats, and good news on your 5 hour battery life. A couple things about battery though, once you do a full discharge, your battery life wear will be more accurate. Batteries usually require one discharge even new to be properly calibrated. In any case, new batteries can still come up to 3-4% wear.
-
Thanks to DavyGT for pointing out the Anandtech review of the Monster 1.0.
AnandTech - Eurocom Monster 1.0: Clevo's Little Monster
One thing to note is the battery life. Internet test is 338 minutes ~ 5.5 hours.
-
My thoughts on the Anandtech review...
They picked on the design a lot but I love it - I don't want it to be flashy or cool looking - I think the utilitarian look is just great and very fitting for the horsepower crammed inside.
I actually use the 2nd Fn key a lot, mostly for activating the "end" key on the right arrow to get to the bottom of this (and other) forum threads.
I really wish they had shared the benchmark results with max settings on the native res. Of course its going to clean up on the value settings for everything and of course its going to struggle with 1080p maxed out - but I didn't buy a 11.6" beast to play on a 1080p screen any more than I did to play with low settings on the built in screen.
I thought the screen was "good enough" but now I am seriously considering replacing it with the AU OPTRONICS B116XW02 they mention... The main thing stopping me is that something better may yet surface (and that I need to make sure exactly what panel is in mine of course)...
Battery life??? What the heck? With the 3720QM? What black magic is going on there???
Love the conclusion though, this machine does make me giggle.
-
Ivy Bridge i3 and i5 processors will be an option over here end of June. I guess i'm going for a more power friendly processor and i'm wondering if it will have a positive effect on the price as well
.
Then i'll probably add the Intel 320 SSD since it's also power friendly? (and budget friendly)
Can anyone give me a hint if "pixel warranty" is worth the effort (30 euro). -
To me pixel warranty depends on the manufacturer warranty. For example with Sager, you have a 30 day no hassle return policy. So if you have a bad pixel or two, you're out return shipping costs and have to re-order a new laptop.
-
I have received the little big machine, i have everything but the CPU (i7 3720)
, it has been shipped from the USA to France but no sign of it since may 6th, still processed through USPS sort facility in Chicago
, i decided to go with the Phobya HeGrease Extreme instead of IC diamond and use the IC diamond to do a BIT of polish over the heatsink, every little thing helps(or maybe it's just a bad idea?).I'd like to upgrade the glossy screen to matte but i wonder if there will be better quality screens in the next few months. Also can i stick with the 90W PSU with the 3720QM ? i apologize for my bad english
Peace -
For the Ivy quad core Cpu's you will need the 120w power supply. Enjoy! -
I asked mySN about the update on the matte option and they said they are still working with Clevo for options, nothing 'newsworthy' yet.
-
For the Ivy 3612QM the 90W power supply should be sufficient.
-
And that would be wrong. Wingnut saw a 105watt draw when cpu +gpu under load.
And he asked about a 3720qm a 45watt proc not the 3612qm 35 watt one.
Edit: Sorry if you thought I was talking about all ivy procs i should have been clear i was replying to his specific inquiry. -
Anandtech review is up. It's pretty detailed.
edit: oops, I see HTWingNut has already posted this on the last page. -
Remember that his power draw number is from the wall not from the laptop. The 90W PSU is rated to deliver 90W from the brick. Most PSUs are 85% efficient for the good ones which would result in a 105W measured at the wall to output 90W to the laptop.
From his testing it seemed to me to be that the BIOS was limiting the laptops pull from the PSU to 90W by stepping down the turboboost on the CPU. This may not be so for every CPU option so it would likely be advisable to get the greater PSU but it may not be required if this truly is the case. -
Since most resellers are saying if you have the 45W Quad that you have to get the 120W power supply I will believe them.
-
Yeah, with Prema's BIOS tweak to 120W draw, battery still won't charge at 105W. I was able to get power draw to 110W, but could just be a slight loss in efficiency of the PSU. The advantage of using the 120W PSU though is it won't be running near peak power draw if you run stressful games frequently.
-
Sure i don't want the PSU to peak, thanks to all for your precious feedback
-
I dont think I am under any danger of having my psu be stressed in any way... LPC sent me a honking 7 inch 130W+ power supply for my 3610qm lol.
Any chance of me getting my hands on that BIOS tweak? My load temps are fine (77 Celsius after borderlands for 2.5 hours without a cooling pad) but honestly as I am typing this my temps are in the mid to high 60's and for a guy who has to download things overnight due to the speed of his internet this is concerning. I dont use or need hyperthreading as I have 4 cores so itd be nice to turn that off. -
I am really busy these days, but we hope to run some more tests during the weekend...it 'll come so just a little patience...

Hardwareinfo did a review of the BTO branded offering
review here [its in dutch] BTO P.Book 11CL45 review: ULTRAbook | Hardware.Info Nederland
and translated: Google Vertaling -
Disabling hyperthreading won't affect temps by much especially at idle. Propping it up will have as much if not more cooling effect than disable hyperthreading. Set CPU to 0% in power options and you can limit CPU to 1200MHz. That will have a significant effect on heat.
Your temps will not drop much below 60C only because the fan does not turn on until over 60-62C. That's just the way it is. Only way to get idle temps lower is to go with a dual core SB or get an IB when they come out, or hopefully eventually find a way to manage the fan at lower temps.
After sitting over night, when I power on CPU may sit at 52C or so, but as soon as I do anything CPU intensive, it never goes back below 60C because the system is already heated up. -
Thanks for finding that +1
See battery tests are wildly all over the place. Their reader test got only 190 minutes (3hrs 10mins).

My only thought is there is something keeping the 650m actively charged, at least higher than it should be. Even with varying SSD/HDD, power draw shouldn't vary more than 1W especially at idle which would equate to probably less than 20 minutes variation. Not two hours. -
But are they all using the same method to test battery life?
-
Very similar, but in any case 2 hours difference? 1 hour difference? That's like close to a 50% hit in battery life.
5.0 hours is about 12W consumption.
4.0 hours is about 15W consumption.
3.5 hours is about 18W consumption.
3.0 hours is about 21W consumption.
There's a huge discrepancy there. Realistically I was expecting 12-15W consumption. And when checking power drain using BatteryBar, BatteryCare and HWInfo it does show typically about 15W, so I think there may be some issue with my battery. After a few discharges it should be reading accurately too. -
Hello guys I've been following this thread for some time now, I was really interested in the W110er but the battery life inconsistency and heating issues make this a risky purchase especially for the price, cause I was planning to use this for at least 2 years but with that temp. I just don't know
I still have faith in the modded BIOS that you guys are working on
Oh and here is a review from laptopmag (how come all the reviews from known websites are for the Eurocom Monster ????) :
Eurocom Monster | Gaming Notebook Reviews -
Temperature is not an issue. Not sure how people are scared off by that. Battery life is a concern, especially the inconsistency. Seems the Eurocom Monster seems to fare best with battery life though. Other brands are suffering it seems.
edit: that laptopmag test shows battery life at 3hrs 28mins. Not sure what their test is though they don't say. -
I wonder if it's possible the various monitor replacement models might have an impact on battery life.
-
Again, you'd need it to draw 8W+ difference to have that kind of effect.
-
I agree, I've ran processors 24/7 doing crunching(various BOINC projects) for 6 years on the oldest currently crunching processor at 70 C to upper 80s C and none of them have died from it.
-
As long as its within spec, and doesn't adversely affect other components in the system, it will run fine. Idle at 60C isn't an issue as far as CPU life. Most games will run < 85C which is well within normal for a laptop CPU.
-
-
I ordered a Zalman 1000 to go with the notebook. I was wondering if covering up the extra holes via tape etc would help to vent more cool air into the intake? Or would the regular surface cooling work better?
-
For those who have their W110ER right before them:
At what temp (CPU/GPU) do the fans start spinning?
@HT we are almost there...
-
I got mine yesterday and I absolutely love it! The rubber texture on the lid, armrest and mousepad is perfect since it's scratch-, filth- and fingerprint-proof. I haven't been playing any games yet but the temps I get while buffering HD Youtube-videos and surfing are usually at 70 C (about 5% load), maximum 81 C, (often at 60 C the first hour), even after hours of use. The chassis isn't hot at all. I'm about to buy an external cooler pad or something, so far I've only been using a magazine.
The only cons are the very small arrowkeys of the keyboard and the fact that you can see the grid of pixels in the screen if you look closely. Other than that, the screen is all right, even though it's not matte it doesn't really reflect that much.
I bought it from PC-konsulten in Sweden, and here are the specs:

Prema - Yay! can't wait! Any chance for restricting active CPU cores that you've found?
As far as temps, It moves a little air at about 62-64C then spins up audibly at about 70C.
