We knew this was coming but after reading about it as a real thing I really want that 11.6" 1080p IPS panel in my W110ER.What do you think the odds are that it will be possible?
-
Looks a little under powered. Might get the 120W Cooler master if it comes out in the states or maybe the 95volt one if not. -
Ultrabook = Ultracrappy graphics
I'd rather have an uglier laptop that can actually do some work and gaming. -
My W110ER just shipped.
Should have it by Friday.

Well, it depends if the screen is eDP(most likely) or LVDS(what our machine uses) and how many lanes our LVDS connection has. I'll be interested to see HTwingnuts pictures when he changes out his screen.
Pg 15 from this VESA presentation will show you what I'm talking about.
If Clevo has only included a 8-10 signal wire connection then it can't handle any res higher then 768p. If the connector has >16 signal wires then we may be in luck if we ever find a higher res 11.6 panel that fits.
I really wish they had used eDP, not just for the greater panel choice it would afford us, and the removal of the number of lanes worry, but also because eDP supports some tech that our GPU supports that could reduce power consumption while viewing webpages and other static reading conditions. -
When did you order, and where did you order from? Just wondering how long it takes them to build after the order is sent to the factory.
-
I ordered from XoticPC on May 10, got the order processed on May 11, and the notebook shipped out on May 22 (today), which took around 7-8 business days total.
Generally with Sager resellers the only thing that differs is the processing time, since after the order gets processed they all end up at Sager to build anyway. -
What about this one maybe http://www.amazon.com/Kensington-12...2?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1337708734&sr=1-2

So just came here for advice
What do you guys suggest?
the 3610QM or the 3612QM or the 3720QM?
Thanks in advance
-
Go with whichever is cheapest, likely 3610QM.
-
Thanks, the 3612QM seems to be freakin' useless... (no offense lol) .. so far
-
I just placed an order with xoticpc on Thursday night.... I havent gotten an update from them since then.... 2 business days. I'm starting to get antsy.
-
In theory, it sounded great, 35W TDP vs 3610QM at 45W TDP, but looks like the 3612QM just barely meets 35W TDP criteria because it runs just as hot and doesn't seem to be any power consumption advantages either.
-
make sure that you confirm the order with them... either they will call you and in the case that ur not available, they might send an email telling you to call them to confirm the order before it goes into production.
-
How does Ubuntu run? I was dual booting Ubuntu and XP on my now desceased Lattitude D620 and would like to reuse the hard drive and use Ubuntu at the very least to update my backup in case I mess up upgrading Windows.
I will be ordering one if I can justify the cost to my dad, Solidworks can only do so much. -
Also, someone posted this before, best CPU comparison I've seen so far (minus the 3612):
Review Intel Ivy Bridge Quad-Core Processors - Notebookcheck.net Reviews
As HT highlighted, the 3612 has dubious advantages at this time.. but I've been really keen to try to find a quantitative analysis of the exact heat, battery life, and performance difference, and honestly thus far haven't really found a single resource with any hard numbers... too bad the notebookcheck review above was missing that proc. -
Ubuntu and Linux distro at this time do not play well with the nVidia Optimus switching graphics at this time. nVidia Optimus should be equipped in the majority of the computers with the HM7x chipset and 6-series GPUs.
Some of the Linux community have been working on a way to get Optimus to play well with Linux, it is called bumblebee. From my understanding, it only seems to work in a Virtual terminal environment at this time.
It is my understanding that the AMD Enduro does play nice with Ubuntu Linux so you might want to look into that as an option. -
Thanks bro, I did. I called Kaitlyn up yesterday to change the CPU to the IB from the SB and she even asked me if I wanted to go ahead and have them charge my card. I said go ahead. Didn't see an update on the actual order though.

What are good carrying cases with exhaust through the bottom for the W110ER (similar to the Alienware m11x portfolio case)? And maybe one that fits a laptop cooler as well?
-
I picked up a cheap one from Office Max for about $16, made for up to 13.3" laptops. In addition to my W110ER, my superslim dual fan cooling pad (12.99 at Microcenter) fits in there nicely, allowing the huge power brick to be put in the back pocket and the mouse in the front. It is not a fancy setup by any means but its very cheap and works great. it contrasts nicely with my command center at home (2x24" 1080p monitors, Razer Imperator, Thermaltake Massive23 LX). Just goes to show you that you dont need to spend a lot go get a lot. Case and point with this vs the late m11x XD

I honestly think the adapter with the fan is more of a disadvantage than an advantage... an adapter is designed to sit on the ground - wouldn't the fan attract a lot of dust? I'm sure it also worsens the power efficiency given it'll require power to run the fan. I don't think we can even disassemble it to clean the fan, and because of the open space, it practically precludes outdoor use.
I really hope mine doesn't come with the fan-equipped one... unless can anyone say why they've decided to go with the fan-equipped one? -
Since we are talking about something in theory.. should the 650M GDDR5 works with the W110ER? And should the 660M too.. I mean they could be implemented, why weren't they? (besides the obvious heating and energy input..)
-
Both of them theorhetically could have been implemented. Heck, you coukd've "theoretically" implemented a 7970M and 3920XM.
-
Because the 650m gddr3 is cheaper, I would guess.
-
That and I'm guessing the performance difference at 1366x768 would be negligible. Now out putting to a monitor/tv sure, but base screen probably not.
-
There we go!! Perfect, the missing piece
great thanks for the reply and to you other guys..
.. unfortanetly I rep people to fast so I've got none left, I'll rep tomorrow when I get some if I remember!
cheers
-
Right there. I think GT 650m and quad core is pushing the limits as-is. Having a GPU that consumes more power and generates more heat would have made this thing like 2.5 inches thick. And also what Wu Jen stated, partially cost, partially at native res it won't matter a whole heck of a lot.

There have been many pros and many cons circulating about these threads, and after having owned mine for about a week, this is my attempt at sorting the good from the bad.
-It games. Amazingly. Be it Battlefield 3 or Starcraft II, be it Diablo III or Tribes Ascend, consistently eyegasmic visuals are not in small supply, even given the small package. Not much more can be said, this thing is built for performance and it does not disappoint. Very few games are not playable on maxed or near maxed settings, the only one personally I own is the Witcher 2, but even a GTX 680 cannot max that game.
-I can game just fine on an 11.6" display, even Starcraft II is wholly enjoyable, minimap and all.
-It runs plenty cool and quiet when on a cooling pad or propped up, no issues there. I came from a G74 and its not much louder.
-It is actually very thin for what it is, and it does not feel like it weighs 4 pounds.
-The keyboard is not too small to type or game (even competitively) on. The only thing I have to get used to is the small right shift key, especially when using a question mark.
-I dont know where y'all are coming from but the touchpad is plenty big for me. Its leaps and bounds better than the G74's and better than even HP's great touchpads, especially to game on.
-Screen is good, I have no complaints, 1366x768 is plenty for this size and ive been so indoctrinated with glossy screens that I don't know better.
-Build quality leaves nothing to be desired. Very little flex, no danger spots.
That being said, heres my 2 cents on how it could be improved:
-A backlit keyboard would be great, it makes sense with this size that lighting conditions will not always be optimal. I'm still waiting for my glowing key caps to arrive in the mail.
-The battery life is rather disappointing. Perhaps with some tweaks it can be made better, but that was my biggest letdown. I have to bring my charger with me most places, and while thats not a huge inconvenience, finding a wall socket can sometimes be tricky.
-Nit picking here now, but the sound while good, is rather quiet. The THX utility doesnt seem to do much and is confusing to optimally configure.
-The webcam does not have very good color. The motion tracking is good, but the colors are quite washed out so dark rooms make for a very unsatisfactory experience.
-The power button doesnt turn on the laptop right away, it takes a second or two.
-It would be very nice if the power button turned blue when on HD 4000 and green/red when on GT 650m. That is a feature on many MSI and Acer laptops, and I must say it is very nice.
-Get rid of the VGA and add a Displayport. Please.
-More usb 2.0/3.0 on the right side, there is basically nothing there and plugging a cooling pad or a printer into a 3.0 port seems like a waste
Thats as much of a review as I am going to do. I paid less than $950 for an 11" laptop with an ivy quad core, a massive hard drive, oodles of RAM, a killer wireless card, and a graphics card that blows everything less than double the weight out of the water. I do not regret it. Yes the popularity of this item will lead to more laptops in this form factor with some of these issues remedied, but on the whole I feel like I got more than what I paid for and I am happy with that. -
Thanks for that coolaidstyle. Very good summary.
-
Well, mine finally shipped from XoticPC. How long do they usually take to ship, 3-5 days? (Standard Shipping)
-
If you go the the UPS tracking page, there should be an estimated delivery time. For me it's 3.5-4 business days, but that's from CA all the way to NJ.
-
R3d, didn't you order with a Sandy Bridge? Looking forward to some feedback on the dual core Sandy Bridge CPU's.
-
I disagree on the volume. Those speakers are LOUD for how tiny a package they come in. Louder, in fact, than my old 17" D901C (Sager NP9261).
-
Yeah, I'll try to get some run some tests asap when I receive it.
-
Have you anybody noticed that when battery is in it place and locked and then you try to moving/touch the battery on the left side of corner, it moves a little bit, up and down. The right side doesnt where is the key-lock. It still stay locked and works properly but I only noticed that point, I mean it doesnt matter
-
Disregard my query, found examples of glowing keyboard caps. I've got a filtered search here to weed out all but straight english (UK/US) keyboards... and Dvorak for those who might prefer it:
http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_odkw=keyboard+glowing+-kindle+-spanish+-arabic+-danish+-russian+-swedish+-hungarian+-persian+-portuguese+-farsi+-french+-german+-hebrew+-greek+-thai+-korean&_osacat=58058&_trksid=p2045573.m570.l1313&_nkw=keyboard+glowing+-kindle+-spanish+-arabic+-danish+-russian+-norwegian+-italian+-swedish+-hungarian+-persian+-portuguese+-farsi+-french+-german+-hebrew+-greek+-thai+-korean&_sacat=58058
At the very least, this sates my need for a keyboard cover. Probably never would have found one that fit. -
I ordered with an i5 also, since I'm eyeing a Ivy Dual Core sometime later. I do want to see these glowing keycaps you speak of though too.
-
This is the outfit I ordered from:
Glowing Keyboard Stickers | Glowing Keyboard | Glow in the dark Keys for Keyboards -
To anyone who has the 6110 in front of them--what are the dimensions of the letter keys? 10mm x 11mm? Reps will be warranted
-
Twice as expensive as the generics I found on ebay... is the quality supposed to be higher? Looks pretty much the same. Please be sure to state the letter dimensions when you get yours--if it's larger than the generics 10mm x 11mm, I may pay extra for full-key coverage.
-
14mm wide x 13mm high
no rep required.
-
Standard key-face size then.
You still have a number of reps on the way. Working on it
-
Runs great. 53-56C temps with Bumblebee installed for the Optimus drivers in Ubuntu. Really easy to set up with easybcd and the windows loader.
I can say DO NOT order a non Intel wireless card. Drivers for the Intel cards are built into the kernel. -
From the description and some youtube videos it seems that these type of stickers don't actually glow in the dark. Rather, the are just made from a reflective material that reflects light from the monitors.
-
Has anyone used vmware on this laptop? I would like to run ubuntu/red hat in wm. If so what were the temps like?
-
They (being the ones I got) do indeed glow in the dark. I bought a 2 pack, and it came out to be a couple more dollars that what you can find on Ebay but they were reccomended to me by a friend who already had them. They should arrive sometime this week or at the very latest, next monday or tuesday.
I dont have a decent video camera or even a smartphone, but i will do my best to take some pictures for y'all
-
You're referring to the myglowkeys product, of course. Looks like you're right. The description implies that it's merely reflective. This video reviewer implies that it's not very effective:
MyGlowKeys Product Review (read description!) - YouTube
Looks like I'll just go with the generics and save $7. All I really want is to keep the keys from wearing down anyhow. -
Well that and the first answer in their FAQ says that they're reflective rather than luminescent. I'd still like to see how well they work in the w110er though.
-
The one video review on youtube (that isn't an advertisement) casts some doubt on the "glowing" claim. Will be interested to see if you have a better experience.
-
*sigh* it appears I've been duped lol. Ill just refuse shipment and take my chances on ebay. I suppose I should have asked to SEE them first. Has anybody ordered them off ebay yet?
Why would you call them MyGlowKeys when they DONT GLOW??
Upon further research, it appears that the ones on Ebay do NOT glow by themselves either. They are also reflective, meaning a cheaper alternative to what I ordered. Are there any actually GLOWING stickers?
