Umm, guys? Sager released an update to the "Hotkey" utility on the 15th, and I just installed it. My W110ER is now running at 59 degrees (on the hottest core, the others are between 53 and 58 degrees) with light internet browsing and my laptop is resting on a cloth tablecloth. I didnt do anything else besides installing the update (version 6.0045) and it is idling 7 degrees cooler on a tablecloth than it was on my dual fan notebook cooler. There is no noticeable increase in fan noise. Intriguing...
Here is the link to the drivers page from Sager:
Software Upgrade
Edit: with my notebook cooler, its 56 degrees on the hottest, with cores below 50 degrees consistently. That is a whopping 10 degree difference from a seemingly insignificant software update. Has anyone else tried this? I want to make sure im not crazy...
Edit #2: Still dropping, now the hottest core is at 53-54 degrees, all the other cores are below 50. Doing batch file transfers and listening to iTunes...

If you plan on loading W7 on your own SSD in this Clevo, do you have to first install the AHCI drivers from a USB stick on the blank SSD for max performance later, or no?
-
It might be the source of extra machine resources that HTWingnut has been looking for to explain the variable battery life. If this has been sucking down more resources then it should it would be activating the CPU more often and causing its temp to be higher. If it was also poling the dGPU that could explain some of his problems. If some machines come with the old version you have and some come with the newer version that might be a source of the different battery lives.
-
Wow, I'll give it a try. Been meaning to update those drivers... good feedback, +1 (wups, have to wait to give more rep).
By the way, since I did an image from my WD SSD to my Samsung 830 power consumption has been quite a bit less too. Perhaps that does have somewhat of a role. Just using it lightly browsing NBR and a couple other sites, estimates are about 4 hrs 20 minutes so far, and I've been downloading several big files too.
edit: it gives me an error installing the new hotkey driver... // nevermind. Had to uninstall existing one, reboot, then install new one. Will do some battery testing later.
edit edit: No noticeable decrease in temperatures so far. -
I don't get an estimate, only a percentage. Any idea why that is? I also got the error, you need to uninstall the old driver first.
-
As far as I know all Sandy Bridge 17W CPU's were BGA (soldered). So depends if Intel releases a PGA (socket) version or not. 17W would definitely be a good option.
-
It is a rebrand of the Kingston HyperX SH100S3 which was going head to head with Intel 520 in terms of performance, except for the Random Reads 4KB/4K aligned:
AnandTech - Intel SSD 520 Review: Cherryville Brings Reliability to SandForce
If you try to compare pairs of SSD's on those charts is pretty hard to come out with a definite conclusion performance-wise, unless you focus only on HyperX and Intel 520 which share the same SandForce controller.
HyperX SH100S3 had firmware problems last year which have been sorted out earlier this year, the refresh K3 SH103S3 probably differs only in design (brownish grey instead of blue) and default firmware.
I have been running a SH100S3/120GB in my D901C for the past 2 months without any problems. -
What is your idle temp? I checked with CoreTemp, HW monitor, and rivatuner to make sure it didn't just break core temp, but all showed consistent temps. Did you install any of the other drivers from the sager page? There was a couple more updated ones like the LAN drivers, intel management engine drivers and video drivers, if I wasn't mistaken. I'll do a battery test tomorrow. What utility would you recommend for "time remaining"? I get a percentage and that's it.
Edit: sorry for the double post, I have just my iPod at present and I'm not exactly proficient at quoting and such yet. -
Let us know how it goes. I already had that version installed from Mythlogic and I'm interested in seeing if that is why I had better battery life then you on the idle test.
-
No other drivers. Let it idle for about 20 minutes. Sitting about 57C, propped up even. I was running about 59C. So maybe slight effect, but 2C it's hard to tell really.
If I use BatteryBar I get a percent drain. You may have to set the option to "use statistical time estimation".
That could be. But using my laptop more since I swapped the WD for Samsung SSD, seems to do better now. Plus the new matte screen might help since technically it's supposed to be lighter on power consumption too. -
Would you mind trying to do a full battery drain again? Something tells me your battery life has changed significantly

With all the updated drivers too

I left it for a few hours, while I was at an orchestra concert. While on a cooling pad, it was under the same conditions as it had been when I was downloading something overnight (on a cooling pad, plugged in). Before the update I woke up and checked the temps (was still worried about them as it was the second day I had it). It was at 67 degrees celsius. The attached picture is what I saw when i opened it up after having been downloading something during the concert:
I the only thing I can think of that changed was the updated software. Ill be doing some tests tomorrow and this weekend to figure out exactly what is going on here. I dont know what I was getting before for battery life, but BatteryBar says my maximum battery life is 3:38
Edit: sorry for the small picture, I tried a straight screenshot and the file was too big :/
Edit #2: It may not look like it, but this was a reading taken while the system had been on and idle for several hours. Not trying to trick anyone by taking a reading right after it was resumed from sleep or powered on...Attached Files:

Has anyone tried to over clock the LCD in the W110ER yet as discussed in this thread? http://forum.notebookreview.com/sager-clevo/660283-you-guys-know-you-can-overclock-lcd-5.html
Would like to see the results some people get, I also plan on trying this when I get mine, OC'ing the LCD to even 75hz could lead to better gameplay experiences. Of course there is a very small chance of damaging the screen if you go too high, but I highly doubt a 15hz-25Hz increase would cause any damage at all. -
I dont think you can "overclock" the LCD with stock drivers. It seems that much of the options on the Nvidia Control Panel are unavailable. I havent messed with the drivers yet as coming from an AMD card, ive always been wary of messing with drivers.

Might be able to with drivers from laptopvideo2go.com -

Sorry - I'm not sure what the picture represents. Does that mean max temp at idle? Range of temp?
Perhaps the BatteryBar is saying that because new drivers increased fan speed when plugged in - and the behavior and estimate may change on battery. -
Are there any benchmarks or feedback on running diablo 3 on 1080p?
-
That picture is a snapshot of the temperatures on every core and thread at one moment in time, which happens to be after the notebook has been idling on a cooling pad for several hours. If I had been smart I would have shown HWMonitor, so you guys could see maxes and mins, but it was kind of an inpromptu measurement. Next time it is idling for a while (overnight perhaps), I will get a HWMonitor reading.
Sorry guys, I attempted to perform a Battery Eater's test overnight last night but my notebook went to sleep 10 mins in
next time imma check my power config before i do it lol
Edit:
Here is a good place to start http://www.notebookcheck.net/Diablo-III-Benchmarked.74918.0.html -
I was hoping someone who recently upgraded from a M11x R3 to this laptop could tell me if they notice an obvious improvement in game graphics and playability? Also, are there any other threads or forums that go into the actual game play performance versus discussion on heat and battery life?
-
From what i have read gt650m is classified as a high mid graphcs card. Basically you can play bf3 high at 30-35 fps. Imho Its good but i have doubts that it can handle games thrown at it for the next 2 years or so.
Currently:Macbook unibody 13.3 late 2008.
Getting a 6165 or a 6110 as soon as i see reviews when playing games! -
The battery life on this thing is terrible. I have the cpu set to 1.2ghz and according to hardware monitor it is using 7watts. If all the the other components take a 5 watts I should be getting 5 hours not 3.
There are other laptops that use the same components that are getting much better battery life. I bet most of these oems just take Intel's reference board change the shape and ship it so either the battery is not 63watt-hrs or the 650m is actually on. -
We are still working on figuring out what do do about that, hopefully it's a correctable error in the BIOS. I look forward to a BIOS update from Sager or Prima's BIOS mod, or both
-
The Mod is based on the Clevo bios update released on the 8th of this month...

Agree. 10char

If you have particular games you want tested you just have to ask and if it has a demo one of us will get around to testing it.
If you're looking for something beyond raw FPS numbers you just need to be more specific about what you are looking to hear about. I'm very happy with this laptop for EU3, CK2, Victoria II, EVE Online, and some occasional CS:S with a friend who doesn't live near me anymore.
I'm hoping my hardware config will be interesting enough that I get selected for the MWO beta but other then that I don't have much time for gaming right now. -
Where did you get that it runs BF3 at 30-35 fps? I get 80-90 at 1366x768 at high and 50-60 at 1080p on high. It will handle games just fine in two years.
I don't think there are other laptops with a 45W TDP CPU and GT 650m that get more than 4 hours battery life, unless you can point to one that does. Even the M14x R2 reports from users here at NBR are getting less than 4 hours with realistic use. -

Can someone supply the height x width of the actual screen ( not bezel ).
If this was 13.3/14 I would be all over it but not sure the size will handle
non-gaming activities that well for me. -
They're wrong.
http://forum.notebookreview.com/sag...er-np6110-clevo-w110er-first-look-review.html
This shows 65FPS, but depends on map, and default High includes 4xAA I believe which is what was selected when running the test showing results below. Turn off AA and performance bumps up, as well as turn off the dxdeferred option and you're running a solid 70+FPS, typically 80+.
-
Usually when they do those kind of reviews. Ultra and high they crank everything up. That's why
-
Yes, please try the Witcher 2 and Diablo 3. I am getting about 25 fps on medium settings at 1280x720 and 40+ in Diablo 3 at full resolution and high settings. This is on the R3.
-
It says right on their site, High, 1366x768 no AA.
-
Also, any regrets or buyers remorse with this one? No thoughts about wanting to go back to Alienware? Just wondering because I honestly really like my R3, but would really like to have something in this form factor and weight that will handle anything thrown at it in the highest settings.
-
Hello ppl,
How run Maffia II and GTA IV Episodes from liberty city in this " BabyBook " ?
Any one have tryed this games ?
Tkz,
BR -
I apologize. Did not notice. But I did mention "usually" heh.
-
Heh, no problem. I like notebookcheck as a general reference guide but they do tend to generalize or not clarify a lot of times their settings. They do have a huge plethora of information though. I just don't like to see people use them as an end all be all in deciding on a video card or laptop because they can be wrong or confusing.
-
This is for notebook checks review right? When I mouse over the Battlefield 3 on high setting i see the following: "1366x768 high 16AF - AA." Doesn't that mean x16 on Antistropic Filtering and Antialiasing?
-
No it means 16AF "minus" AA.
-
My laptop got delivered in the thirty minutes I left the house for, and since nobody was around to sign for the order they left a note saying they'd drop it off on Tuesday... I'm so pissed right now over that cause' I was hoping it have it over the weekend.
-
Don't they have a pickup? I know my local UPS and FedEx both have offices you can pick the item up at if you miss the delivery. Usually they open after 5pm.
-
Second Wu Jen. Go get your laptop!
-
any ETA on modified bios?
-
Just got my i5 w110er. Still installing windows, will have some impressions up in a bit.
-
I buy today one, and here the ppl talk I will receive it on start of june. maybe they get a number of machines to import. I am in Brazil.
But can´t wait to test this little machine
If any one with this model play GTA IV or Maffia II and want talk about the performance I will apreciate. it is the games that I plan to use with this notebook.

Would I want to go to the nearest UPS store to pick it up? Or "Authorized Shipping Outlet", etc...
-
yeah if you missed it, then ur laptop is still on the truck... not the storage center where you can option for them to pick it up, u can probably get it on monday if you tell them to keep it for you.
-
SWEET! Look forward to how your i5 does.
-
Wich i5 did u choose please?
BTW, does the i5 3360M would make a good choice for this lappy? -
I got the i5-2450m. The i5-3360m isn't out yet but judging by the specs it should be a good 10-15% faster than the i5-2450m, which should be pretty good.
Still installing updates (110!
) and the Nvidia GPU driver is taking forever to download from Sager so I still need a little more time to settle in, but I'll try to have more info up later tonight.
Initial impressions:
-Screen is surprisingly decent. Black levels could be a little (or a lot) better but other than that the IVO screen comes pretty close to the LG display in my dv6zqe (which I believe is also the same LG display the w150er has). But coming from 1080p, 768p is lame. A 900p option would be nice.
-Keyboard is solid (can't feel any flex), but the smaller keyboard takes a little time to get used to (esp. the right shift key). Keys seemed a little mushy to me at first but I think I'm getting used to it now.
-The design is really plain. Really, really plain. I don't want Alienware level flashiness, but I wish Clevo gave the design a little more personality.
-The way that the back plate is designed is really nice. Pretty much all the components are easily accessible, so repastes and upgrading should be pretty easy.
-I got the 90w AC adapter, but it seems that the cord is compatible with the 120w adapter that came with my dv6zqe.
-Construction is very good. No creaks, and everything is put together very solidly.
I don't think I have time to do a battery rundown today so I'll try to get some battery info up tomorrow.
