Hmm, I let my system idle last night, well not completely idle, but run memtest86+ since I was testing my ram at 2133MHz for 8+ hours and when I booted into windows CPU is at 50C! But the fan was moving very slowly.
I shut down, then started back up, but now the fan doesn't move at all and temps are back up to 60C. Strange. Seems after some time, the fan kicks in low and doesn't shut off, so it drops temps. But not sure what would force that or why it wouldn't do it at any other time.
I don't get it. Weird.
-
Indeed, so maybe with some tweaks with fan we should be able to lower idle temp, well, crossed finger.
P.S: 3 weeks after order, my CPU is not there yet, that's why i can't give no feedback with a cpuless machine...argh ! so far i dunno if i stick with the i7 3720QM or wait for the i5 3360M or even i7 3520M -
Alright I got the battery down to 10% yesterday and I'm pretty surprised at how long it lasted. I had the screen brightness one setting above the lowest, wifi on, and the webcam and bluetooth turned off via the hotkeys. Used the standard 'balanced' windows profile. I also disabled a bunch of services and startup programs that I didn't want (e.g. the bluetooth ones, the hotkey tray program, the THX and VIA audio tray stuff).
By my count it took 6 hours to get there. Started at 8:40PM and took an hour break (turned the notebook off) at 11:50PM and continued at 1:00AM until 2:50. About 30 mins of it was just idling with the screen off, downloading games from steam while I was in the shower and 25 mins was watching flash videos. Other than that, I was pretty much just browsing some forums/tech websites (e.g. engadget, gizmodo, etc.). I was also downloading steam games in the background for an hour or 2.
Is there any way to measure power draw through software? I remember hwinfo had the discharge rate for the dv6z but it doesn't appear when I run it on the Sager. Not sure if I want to keep it though... I could live with the screen res but the black levels and contrast is just killing me. -
Dang...now I think I should call my reseller and change my i7 quad to the i5.....I don't think I need a quad for gaming....as long as I can get at least 30+ fps...
Can you run the Witcher 2 and see it performs? Heck, I am checking this thread every day to see if anyone tested the game on this little beast! -
I don't have TW2. Is there a demo?
-
6 hours. Awesome.. I know which processor to get now
cheers mate. Been waiting for a long time for somebody with a sandybridge processor to quote battery life
-
Just did 25 mins of prime95/kombustor. Temps are a little toasty. I'm very impressed with the fan noise though. It got loud, but not nearly as loud as my dv6z gets. I think I'll do a repaste sometime down the road when I decide to get a SSD.
The battery life is a lot higher than I expected though. I think I'll do another run down today or tomorrow to confirm the results. -
sadly, I don't think there is a demo available.....
-
Your CPU temps are very high dude.
I would repaste as soon as possible, sure the test's you ran are extreme but they are much higher than they should be. -
loving my W110ER - really nice machine, however the lack of CPU boost when using dedicated graphics is annoying for me. Most of the games I play are CPU intensive (ARMA2) so missing out on the boost that is there but disabled is super annoying.
Hopefully we can get a BIOS fix or something. Even something that ups it - at least make it temp sensitive. When playing ARMA2 I don't see anything over 72C at 2.6ghz. I know I could go to 3ghz or maybe 3.2ghz before I hit 90C or >. At least make it thermally based and not just a 'rule' - if NVIDIA GPU = no boost. That seems just plain lazy. -
Yeah, I'll do a repaste. I think I'll order some ICD online or something, don't have any lying around.
-
Yep lack of cpu boost is kind of annoying on the W170ER too. I lost 15-20fps in BBC2 from 2,6 ghz turbo to 2,2 ghz base clocks. Anyway, it's not like the game is running bad but still.
Anyway even the W170ER can't handle cpu boost without sounding like an airplane. Temps go high very fast when turbo is on. They choose to always run the GT 650M at max turbo speed by cutting cpu turbo.
Shoud get a Core i7 3720qm to have a permanent 2,6 ghz while gaming. -
Screenshot of temperatures of my W110ER when playing Diablo3 maxed out @ 70-75FPS for 3+hrs nonstop. Used thermal paste is Artic Silver5, considering going ICD in the near future to see if it drops temps if only a little bit. Please note that the temps below are measured when playing in a 32-33 degrees celcius room, really hot here at the moment. Notebook is resting on a hard table surface, didnt prop it up or anything.
-
The GT 650M is a really a beast in low/intermediate resolutions.
Benchmarkcheck: Dirt Showdown - Notebookcheck.com Tests
I know it's just on Dirt here but for me it's the same on BBC2. Crazy framerates at intermediate resolutions. Even more with a good cpu, the 3720qm is playing a big role i think. Yesterday my core i7 2720qm ES was stuck at 2,6ghz on the four cores while playing BBC2. For some reason turbo stayed on. Crazy framerate boost at 720p and 900p. But the lap crashed twenty minutes later for the first time. Black screen. Cpu at full speed was too much for it
-
what kind of thermal solution are you using ? the IC 7 or the stock ?
BR -
As written, Artic Silver5. Still had a tube lying around. Just ordered some IC Diamond so will apply that and report back on the difference between these two thermal pastes.
-
do you think the palmrest and keyboard have hot or a supportable temperature in your test ?
And sory for my fault in read righ your thermal solution.

Hey all,
I am relatively new to this board but I wanted to post a note of thanks to all the moderators, resellers, and members here. My G73 is 2+ years old and after hauling that beast 100k air miles last year I really wanted a light, ultraportable gaming laptop moving forward. I began reading the board here 2 weeks ago and feel very comfortable with the pros and cons of this platform.
The discussions, questions, and responsiveness of this community is awesome and I wanted to thank everyone. I just put in my order (matte screen was a deciding factor) and I look forward to my new purchase.
Thanks,
Matt -
Good to hear matty!
-
I said "Math it!" I'm going all the way. Just ordered a Vertex 4 512GB for my lappy. Should be receiving both of them next week. Will have to update the firmware to 1.4 but I've been keeping informed and learning about using WinPE. Wish me luck!
-
Since we're on the topic of Arctic Silver and IC Diamond...
I normally use my reserve of Arctic Silver paste for home projects, but I'm thinking now's a good time to get some IC Diamond tubes. Spring for the IC24 I'm guessing, since the 7/24 have identical paste? The IC7 tubes are nearly twice as expensive when priced out by the gram. Most recommend heating the ICD tubes in boiling water before applying--you guys have similar advice? Has someone already posted some comparison screens showing temp marks for the stock paste vs IC Diamond? I know the first post has CPU/GPU temp readings, but I'm assuming those are with the IC Diamond paste--not stock paste. -
So AnandTech just made this review/benchmark Diablo III test/performance review
AnandTech - Laptop Graphics Face Off: Diablo III Performance - the W110ER tops ALL charts (almost

Hi Suzaku,
How is the comfort level playing 3+ hours?
did you notice any discomfort from temp on the palmrest/keyboard area? -
sorry to barge in here guys but why does it seem like this thread has so much more activity than the np6165 owners thread. Are these machines similar enough for me to ask questions about it here before i buy
-
It's allright playing for that long, the entire upper surface of the notebook remains cool, gets a little bit higher temperature at the palmrests but its minor. For an 11'' machine its amazing. when truly under load the fan will go pretty high in sound levels but its ok, nothing worse then my HP EliteBook 8540P when full load. Its kind of inevitable considering the specs and size.
-
Only difference that I know is the NP6165 uses the GDDR 5 650M,better display and had 2 HDD bays but all in all pretty much the almost the same.
Ask away -
I have noticed while gaming (on a cooling pad) that the very front of the notebook, where the card reader is and to the right of that, gets very hot after a while. the rest of the notebook is cool to the touch but that strip is uncomfortably hot. Anyone else noticed this? Looking at the internal design of the notebook it looks like heat might be being transmitted from the heatsink to the large metal piece that shelters the card reader, which no airflow goes to...
-
I agree. I bought a W110ER with the 3720qm at 2.6ghz since they had it in stock, but had I known this system prevented CPU boost I would have sought out that config on purpose. I feel a bit lucky since I fell into it. Still - I think the resellers should disclose the fact that the CPU boost is non functional with the dedicated graphics.
-
Hi Folks,
Has any body here tested linux in this machine ?
how about compatibility and what distro? , works fine ?
Tkz!
BR -
quick question do u guys know if hitting FN+1 will force the fans to 100% on the np6165 or the np6110
it supposedly worked for the np8130 and np5165 according to this link
Manually Control Fan Speed - XOTICPC Forums -
Nope. Will not.
-
well that sucks is their any other way to control the fans with software or something
-
the Fn+F1 = TouchPad Toggle
the user manual http://www.eurocom.com/download/m228_UserManual.pdf
BR -
its fn+1 not fn+f1 no typo just google it
but im not sure if it works on this model but im inclined to believe htwingnut if someone would try it to confirm if it works or not would be appreciated -
Doesn't work. Just tried.
-
thanks for trying havent ordered my np6165 yet or i would have did it myself i appreciate it

There is a bios update 0303 for w110er that fixes the issues with the fans as well as improves memory heat management. This seems legit because I found a download link on the clevo site.
EDIT: Mediafire link
http://www.mediafire.com/?sg4v0r7xo3p1plg
Here is the blurb explaining the new bois
W110ER 最新0303bios出来了。改善了内存发热问题。同时改进了风扇转动频率,降低CPU待机温度。提醒:更新BIOS必须是DOS下更新,不然无法启动
Also a question about turbo boost and w110er. I am getting conflicting information about it. It it throttling and not turbo boosting because it is to hot, or is turbo boost disabled, or something else entirely? -
LaptopUserExtreme Notebook Consultant
nice. Did the update come today? My clevo JUST shipped... I don't know if they installed the new update or now. Does it fix the cpu throttling issue?
Edit: actually it's dated the 8th... so I don't think it's the latest one..
After translating, it looks like it doesn't deal with the cpu turbo issue.. :/ -
"W110ER 最新0303bios出来了。改善了内存发热问题。同时改进了风扇转动频率,降低CPU待机温度。提醒:更新BIOS必须是DOS下更新,不然无法启动"
Google Translate:
The latest W110ER 0303bios out. Improved memory heat problem. While improving the fan rotational frequency, to reduce the CPU standby temperature. Reminder: update the BIOS must be update under DOS, or can not start
Has anyone tried this BIOS? Does the fan turn on sooner? Also, is there an issue with the DIMMs overheating, or is the translation off?
villagepark, from what I've read, I believe that it's the W110ER's BIOS that is disabling Intel Turbo-Boost for the CPU while the nVidia GPU is active, regardless of temperature. I don't believe it's Intel's Thermal Management inside the CPU itself that's causing this issue, but I could be wrong. HTWingNut's Review thread has a lot of test results, plus a lot of great info.
I dl'd these today, though they are a bit technical:

Awesome! thanks for the find. My bios is dated for 4/26 so I will be updating and then letting you know if i can notice a difference.
-
I've got a dual boot Gentoo project in the works. There's a fun problem with the screen offset that I can't seem to fix... and I have yet to get wireless working properly (Intel Ultimate-N 6230). Those could both be Gentoo-specific (or me-specific) issues though. Haven't tested any other distros.
-
Sorry, but that`s what we are using since the beginning. All of HT`s reports are based on 03 BIOS & 03 EC.
Also if someone has a .01 EC (not .01 BIOS) please let us know. We need that before you update!
In case you have EC 0, PLEASE dump your bios & upload with:
http://www.mediafire.com/?37q68r661vw6lw1
The solution to enabled Turbo boost is not in an update, but in downgrade to EC 01.
-
Opps, my bad.
-
Fan still remains the same that I can tell. In other words no fan until after ~ 65C.
-
I have not yet seen this mentioned, but to those (like me) wondering about how the battery life might be impacted by an upcoming dual core Ivy Bridge (ie hoping for the miracle of 5+ hours), apparently not much at all. Check out this review from The Verge (slight edit for clarity): Review: 11 inch Ivy Bridge + Kepler (Clevo W110ER) | The Verge Forums
"The battery life is a problem. With just light web browsing, text editing, and such, I literally got 3 hours 40 minutes from a full charge down to dead. This is inexplicably bad, especially when you consider its gigantic 62.16 W-h lithium ion battery, Core i5 3360M 35 W Ivy Bridge CPU, and solid state drive – These are all things that normally contribute to excellent battery life. This 3:40 is also a far cry from the advertised 5 hours. Given the hardware and the advertised battery life, it seems that there might be a software solution to get significantly more life out of it. As another note, I got 1:05 of gaming battery life (Portal 2, high settings). While also short, it is less surprising; I have yet to see a gaming laptop that can be used for its intended purpose unplugged." -
actually the FPS for BF3 seems to be higher for the i5-3360m, all the reviews with the 3610qm on Notebookcheck could barely scrape 43 FPS on very moderate settings. Damn the turboboost limitation...
-
HTWingNut averaged 65 FPS in B3 on high settings.
Min: 22 FPS
Max: 102 FPS
Avg: 65 FPS
Read his review it's better and much more detailed than any other
http://forum.notebookreview.com/sag...er-np6110-clevo-w110er-first-look-review.html -
So I've got a fun new issue... It started this weekend I think, its a weird noise, maybe a click, snap, knock, or tick/tock hard to describe... I don't think its the speakers because I disabled them in device manager... It seems fairly random, maybe a couple minutes apart on average. It really has me puzzled.
Anyone with a similar experience?

Sounds to me like it might be a hard drive. -
Nope, SSD.
Sorry, should have mentioned that...
