Hm, I can get +100mhz on the VRAM before the driver crashes. Nvidia GPUs seem to be pretty good about OCing though... The driver just resets if you push too high, instead of a BSOD.

Nice, how much higher does your memory bandwidth get up from the stock 28.8Gb/s with +100Mhz?

    It's 11% more, so around 32gb/s.

Well, perhaps he has a engineering sample processor, the newer es are not very well done... The actually power usage may be better. We should know a little better in a week. But all in all, I think R3d's post a couple of pages back, have indicated that its best to get a sandy bridge dual core to pair up with this laptop if battery is a concern . :)

r3d , did you manage to confirm battery life?

This is just unreal. For comparison, my 1st gen dual core i3-370M in this Acer 3820TG with HD5650 (switchable) and the same 64 WHr battery is giving me this:

So Clevo must have royally screwed something up ... I don't think Intel's to blame here.

Yeah something isn't right. Even when completely idle, task manager showing fully idle, the power consumption will bounce around, at least with BatteryBar, from 12W to 16W or more. Even after idling for 20-30 minutes still bounces around. I don't see that behavior on other notebooks. If task manager is showing idle, and power consumption is bouncing around, then I can only imagine it's a hardware issue of some sort.

There is not just a CPU. the batery drain have a lot of factores.

the memory now have 1600 mhz, use more energy.

the chiipset maybe have more power too.

the gpu have more power (IGP too) get more power too.

the fan need work hard to mantain a 11,6" PC temperature with a power of 15" PC.

It is normal this machine spend more energy.

3.5h is not bad for this configuration. and the best solition maybe is the 9cell batery option if it exist.

The only real difference in the Sager BIOS is the name and boot logo... ;)

For the clicking noise, I wouldn't be surprised if its your hard drive parking and unparking the heads... what model are you using?

EDIT: I am just catching up here. You have an ssd...hmm open it up and see if something got stuck in your fan.

Prema, what do u think, Quad core vs Dual core, performance and power consumption wise. I dunno if i go with the I7 3720QM or I7 3520M...

    Prema,
Thanks for clearing that up. I thought the BIOS on Clevo's FTP had a later date than HT's review 1st page screencapture showing CPU-Z/Mainboard BIOS 4.6.5 date of 04/05/2012.

I appreciate everyone's hard work analyzing this amazingly powerful tiny laptop. It's quite a feat!

Somebody mentioned earlier about putting a ULV chip inside? Looks like its not possible. The ivybridge ULV chips are also going to be in BGA packages. Dont think you can install those.. Looks like the only option to wait for the 3rd of June to see reviews of standard dual core ivybridge power consumptions..

All Sandy Bridge 17W chips were BGA, wasn't sure about Ivy Bridge yet. Would be nice if they did offer a PGA option for a 17W chip though.

Alright, just did another run on battery. It took 2 hours 45 mins to get the battery down to 10% streaming flash videos from in the internet. Brightness was 1 setting above the lowest.

Flash video usage is actually very intensive. random source: http://www.tomshardware.com/news/flash-macbook-air-bettery-life,11590.html on flash killing powers. If i may suggest. How about just using a chrome auto refresh app for 4 tabs (non-flash) ( google.com, dilbert.com , bbc.com , notebookreview.com ) every min. That would be much more accurate.. ( I am guessing you were watching youtube for about 3 hours ;) ) hahaha.. Totally appreciate your batt tests though.. No position to ask anything.

HTwingnut, the source I posted earlier said that all ivybridge ULV processors are not going to be PGA, only BGA. but then again, its just one source..

Actually, why dont you do this test.

    (1) Low usage test with a word and excel document open, set to auto-save, along with a single browser tab with a web page with just images and text, to be refreshed every 15 minutes. Power saver mode, hard drive shut down after 5 minutes, brightness at 30%, Wi-fi set to power saving, shutdown at 5% battery life left. 4hrs 2mins

This is what HTWingNut did . :) (Stolen the text from his review) So we can compare figures :)

Actually it's not that bad as-is. Most games running 80-85C CPU and < 80C GPU. Prop it up in the back and it helps cool 2-5C more at load. Run a cooler under it and drops a few more C yet. It's just that idle temps are high because fan doesn't kick in until at least 65C.

HTWingnut or anyone, do you believe propping it with a bottle cap on a Zalman mini notebook cooler would be a few degrees cooler than not propping it with a bottle cap?

HTWingnut or anyone, can you post closed or live eBay auctions or vendors which have the stick on heatsinks and also provide a description and/or pictures of where to place them? I know there may be a few pictures scattered around, just hard to find them. $5 to reduce 5 degrees Celsius, yes please (or does it reduce more or less than that?)

Mine was one of the earlier ones, so I dont think I have the revision 3 BIOS. That download link a few pages back didnt work for me so would it be possible for someone to do a rapidshare or something? I really appreciate it.

Also, I am concerned even more so with my battery life recently. BatteryBar has gone from estimating max 3 hours and 48 minutes (power saver @ idle) to 2 hours and 22 minutes (power saver @ idle). Just sitting here its idling at almost 20 watts...

EDIT: DON'T EVEN TRY TO FLASH IN WINDOWS, YOU WILL BRICK IT!!!

You have to create a bootable flashdrive and then run the step1 & step2 bats from there

    Bom dia,

I think they have to prepare your machine before shipment, it may take some few days+shipment time. You could ask the reseller why it takes all this time...

I ordered a CPU (3720QM) on may 5th an no sign yet, so patience is the word..

    Yop !

I was tired of waiting my CPU (I7 3720QM) i ordered from the U.S to France over 3 weeks ago, so i ordered a I7 3520M (QS) from London ( currently flying through the sky to France :D), I'm ruined but money is made for that kind of stuff, apparently I'll put my hands on it tomorrow  . I hope i will be able to report back performances of the chip, and if i finally get the 3720QM, compare and choose between the twos. Gaming wise there should be no difference between them, and what i like about the 3520 is the base clock and the 35W...Computer Lord gimme some hope :p

Also Rivaturner or MSI Afterburner should do the trick with the overclocking of the GPU :)

Just an update for anyone curious... the Intel display driver in current stable kernels (e.g. 3.2.*) doesn't seem to be compatible with the HD 4000. I'm currently using the latest unstable gentoo-sources, 3.4.0, which does have proper HD 4000 support. So that's one issue down, one to go: wireless. Always fun in Linux.
