I got this one from Monoprice. It does help keep the laptop cool for a couple hours straight and makes it much more comfortable to use on your lap or while in bed. The crystals melt in about two hours of intense gaming but get firm again pretty quickly. Not too elegant, but it's a nice size, doubles as a carrying sleeve and costs $4.

    @HTWingNut
    - Argh that's tempting, but my roommate got it for xbox already, so I'll just have to do with some split-screen action.

Hey folks, as it seems one of my screen hinges became loose. The screen as all shaky when opened and the hinge also moves not only around its axis but also forth and back. I guess that shouldnt be the case.
Is it easy to reach the hinge to have a look?
    Thanks in advance.

A full re-install with fresh drivers got it all going with F1 2012, looks fantastic on ultra! Had issues with BF3 and did some research and found that Teamviewer can mess-up some games full-screen capability, exit Teamviewer and BF3 worked straight away.
Still can't believe the power this little thing has - if only it had an mPCI-e it would be perfect (SSD and 1tb HDD)!!!

Ah superb. I found the answer myself
    @HTWingNut:
Is it possible to remove the screen bumpers without damaging them? Or in other words is it possible to take a look at the hinges without leaving traces? ;)

Good to hear you've fixed it. Couldn't get into it myself unfortunately. After Forza 4 any racer seems too shallow for me.

As for mPCI-e - I have an 120GB SSD built in and an external portable HDD for 1TB and that seems to work just fine.

    Cue rant
mmmmmmm, I gave it a chance but the GDDR3 issue is really starting nip at my heels. Honestly, how the heck did the 640m on a Dell XPS get within 90-95% the performance of the 650m (even exceeded in certain instances) with a MUCH lower clockspeed? You guys check it out AnandTech - Dell XPS 15 L521X: A Detailed First Look

It makes me wonder how much performance or battery life we are missing out on. See, with GDDR5 the core doesn't have to be clocked as high to achieve the same performance=less power consumption (equal at worst if 1gb GDDR5 used instead of GDDR3) and especially heat . There was ZERO advantages to Clevo utilizing GDDR3 other than the fact 2GB VRAM looked better on spec sheet, sweet mercy, they might as well have made it a Gt 640M with GDDR5 if cost was an issue. I actually found overclocking the core doesn't raise performance as significantly as OC the memory even with Prema's wonderful mods, the increased heat doesn't seem worth it. 3dMark 11 doesn't seem like a good indicator of performance since I noticed its very Shader bound with few memory operations (which explains how GDDR3 models are surpassing GDDR5 models). I'm still happy to use the W110er as an ultrabook + extra mojo but it makes me feel glad I have a desktop to fall back on for heavier gaming. Poor engineering/corner cutting is a huge peeve of mine especially when the affected product was sooo close to perfect. If they include GDDR5 in a revision of the W110er I would re-purchase it in a heartbeat.
Sorry, had to get this off my chest
    rant over

Imma thinking of plugging in one of the snazzy 256gb Plextor M5S or the Samsung 840 (when its released), what do you guys think?

My W110ER will be here Friday..I guess I'm late to the party?

Marksman, AFAIK the GDDR5 are full size MXX cards like my 560M? Heck yeah, I've read several posts that would want GDDR5 and a 20%(?) boost.

This will be replacing my 8 hour UL30vt which had 0 updates in 2 years. If I can keep this thing from melting, I will put up with a little buyers remorse ;)

2 months ago, I would've believed that since I thought GDDR5 needed the MXM card due to cooling. However, since then loads of other ultrathins with far inferior cooling to the W110er have been cropping up with GDDR5 with their 650m, 640m heck even 630m chips. I believe the lower clockspeed of the GDDR5 version of the 650m would've solved the heating issue.

Don't get me wrong, the W110er is a kickass ultrabook, I find its biggest perk is that it looks like a circa 2008 netbook so you have a much lower chance of it getting stolen. Plus the awesome community with the likes of HTWingnut and Prema make it all worthwile ;)

Bingo! If Clevo could do GDDR5 in a 13" format, I'm sure the 11" would be left on the side?

I could have waited to see what Clevo is releasing next..naaah!

Heck, due to time, I forgo the cheaper cash offers and went with a local 4 day delivery at the 1k price point with 8 gig, i7, and conventional 750G spinner. I need to save up for the water hose side cooler :D

So I finally got my w110er and I've been playing with it for a couple of days, the keyboard is okay, i hate the small shift button though. Also I hate to say it, but the battery life is so sad :( I've read about the perma bios helping with battery life, but will it hinder any performance?

had the w110er 3 days, finally was able to sit down to a full gaming session, played guild wars 2 for 7 hours straight yesterday, absolutely amazing that it can handle such a game with a crapton of other people on screen while taking down a world dragon boss, amazing machine, so happy with it!

I'm a big undervolting fan, I use Throttle Stop on my SU7300, so UV should make a difference for you. Mine arrives today so the UV mod will be first to install after few days shake down. There is NO performace penalty, but, some chipset do not handle UV well. In our case, the GPU. If it works then we get a free lunch..but help Prema out if it works well for you.

There has been a lot of sad faces concerning battery life with this notebook. ANY 45w cpu should not be on any short list if battery life is of any major priority..right?

This notebook will let me game where no man has gamed before..as long as there is a thermo nuclear reactor somewhere on the grid.

I've got one of the few Sandy Bridge ones that made out of the gate before they switched over to Ivy.

My biggest concern was temps, but I'm pretty satisfied with the results after running furmark.
CPU never went above 65C, and the GPU maxed at 80C when placed on a completely flat surface.
When I placed in my lap, allowing the bottom vent to have a little more room, it dropped all the way to 68C.

I always wondered if those cheap and light 3rd party adapters have the same safety circuits and equally good voltage controls as the regular ones from manufacturer.... And how to check if they're specified at 90w regular (allowing a bit more for short-term needs) or top/max ?
As an example the FSP one is listed "max 90w", so can you expect it to be safe under torture test ?

Well if you wanna think that way, apparently 35w CPUs won't fit the bill either ;)
Clevo just didn't do the best job at optimizing power control, but it's not the worst either..

That's not bad. I see higher temps with my x775 with a SB i5-2430. The 2nd and 3rd generation CPU's scare me a bit in the temps.

Battery life sucks on my x775 as well ;)

    i have a query

to get 60fps in gw2 i need to switch to high performance mode using windows button + x, this part is fine, i then switch back to power save mode once i'm not gaming, i guess this applies to all games.

Using nvidia control panel/manage 3d settings/program settings, you can set the game to use the nvidia card when gw2 opens, but the fps is @ 30, as it does not seem to switch to high performance mode.

Is there a way around this, so i dont have to click on high performance mode every time i want to game, i assumed using these settings for a specific game in the nvidia contral panel would be the answer.

I hope this makes sense, thanks for any help etc.

As far as I'm aware Nvidia control panel and Windows power scheme dont directly interact with each other. You have to specifically the power scheme what you want it to work at. Even though you're telling Nvidia control panel to use the dedicated GPU, power scheme doesn't change because of that.

I've been using ThermalTake one for about two months and it works perfectly. I have my laptop running 12-16 hours a day with hardcore gaming sessions lasting for 4-5 hours straight (Batman AC, Guild Wars 2, Sleeping Dogs) and the adapter, despite being only slightly larger than an iPhone, doesn't even get too hot. Plus it has a nicer and sturdier build than the one that comes with W110ER.

Unlike most third-party adapters it even has a quality smell of a new computer instead of smelling like a radioactive knock-off toy from China. Plus this one supports up to 120W "officially".

Thermaltake - Global - Toughpower Ultra Slim 90W - ADP90W0005 i only see this 90w slim adapter.. do you mean you have the big 120w one?

    Thermaltake - Global - Toughpower 120W - ADP120W0006

whole line up Thermaltake - Global

edit, also, i just noticed the acbel has 0 day warranty? I emailed the manufacturer for clarifications.

EDIT 2: so the latest intel management drivers reduce battery life versus previous release? And the best anyone was able to get was 5:05 on an i7 3610qm?

Please let me ask if anyone has found out why BT does not fully auto start? I have to use the FN/F12 key to enable the BT mouse so not sure what I'm missing or this is a bug?

I don't use BT but I have noticed a Bios setting under 'Advanced' that makes it remember its last status. I am using Prema's modded Bios so don't know if the default one has that setting or not though.

The 90W one you saw can go up to 120W at its peak power, I use the same one but haven't gamed for any extensive amounts of time.

I just wrote an utility that does just this.
Will switch to any mode you select when the nVidia is on, and will switch back to previous (or any one you want) mode when it's off.
Additionnaly, you can also manually select a power plan.

I added an optionnal delay to prevent power plan to be changed when the nVidia is only activated for 1s or so.

Let me know if it works well for you... if other people are interested in, I may polish it a bit, currently it won't save its settings and the notify option doesn't work.

It works OK with Linux -- using fedora 17 right now.

I have thrown this ( Stupid Fred Tricks) together about my adventures with fedora and my chaos 1212 (go back to may and june)

There are still some quirks -- but my chaos 1212 has never had any other OS and I am quite happy (not a gamer -- software guy).

I have the 90w slim one. It can go up to 120w and holds up well during demanding gaming sessions. As I said - 4-5 hours of CPU and GPU intensive games on everyday basis. And at other times I have the laptop running for 10-16 hours a day. No problems encountered at all.

Just ordered a 6110 from Larry at LPC digital with a 3630QM, Crucial M4 SSD, and Killer 1202. Probably going to pull the 3630 and swap it with the 3610QM I have in my 9170.

Very slight power saved? It's minimal and probably translates to about 5-10 minutes extra battery life I guess.

Hello! I have been thinking of upgrading my m11x r1 to this but I had a couple questions. I saw in some reviews that temperatures were ridiculous under load: upwards of 85c, is that still an issue and would repasting the gpu and CPU help with those temps? Also is it easy to disassemble? (I'm used to my alienware where it's just one panel and everything's there) and finally, is the upgrade to the quad core worth it in terms of performance over the dual core? And can either be overclocked other than the turboboost feature? Thanks in advance.

While a lower temperature would be preferred 85C isn't anything to be worried about unless it was the CPU, but for GPU thats fine. What are you seeing with your M11x and what GPU is in it.
I always prefer a quad over a dual core. While temps will be a little higher a battery time is lower its worth the trade for the extra cores in my opinion.

Extremely easy. Everything is so readily accessible. Search for a youtube video by Puget Systems on the W110er which shows them disassembling and assembling the system.

PS: I'm at work, Youtube's banned due to bandwidth issues :(

Not a problem. Repaste and prop the back end up and you'll likely rarely exceed 80C. Also check out Prema's BIOS mod which has a GPU undervolt option. Since they share the same heatpipe it can reduce CPU temps too. I can clock the GPU to 900MHz and run cooler than stock still. 80-85C is nothing to worry about though. The laptop itself is surprisingly cool to the touch, just the exhaust out the left side is hot (obviously).

I have swapped my i7-3610QM with an i5-3360m and have not had time to do comparison benchmarks but am in the process. Also in the meantime Prema's BIOS mod also helps with improved battery life, so will do a battery life comparison too. Give me a couple more weeks and it should be done. Hopefully sooner.

With the new Media Engine update and Prema's undervolt, you will probably be able to get it slightly cooler. However, it is clear that this design has placed quieter operation over cooling.

You can remove the back panel and everything will be accessible.

It's roughly half as powerful In synthetic benchmarks so I will be happy to see how it improve battery live because 30 minutes saved by going to a much slower CPU I do not think will be worth it.

I made a post with a couple of small and large cooler pads along side this laptop.

If microcenter or Fry's carries it I can swing by a take more photos with a particular cooler pad if they have it in stock at the Downers Grove, IL locations.

Hi, I don't know if this has been addressed or not, but here's my situation. I have a second monitor, so I have two active displays. However, I'd like to upgrade this to a third display. So when I connected one monitor to my computer's VGA output, and then my second monitor to my HDMI output, you'd think that'd work. However, Only two displays are active at any given time. How can I activate the third monitor? A macbook pro with the exact same graphics card has no problem running 3 extra monitors, so you'd think that this computer should be able to as well, yes?

    Help?
