@diego: did you reinstall win7 for a start ?
If so, are your frequencies fine (@max) when you stress cpu+gpu ?
-
-
I installed Win8, from there is when it all started. But recently i've reinstalled Win7 to try resolving, no luck.
-
Yes I did. Core 950, Mem 900.
-
It is 52c on idle, as soon as i run Kombustor stress test, it jumps to 71c in less than 1 second. Then it takes about +-15 seconds to reach 80c and so on, thats when it shutdown.
-
it shutdowns while you just / only run combustor ? on battery and on AC ? sounds bad to me :-/
-
No, any demanding game will cause it to shutdown. I tried both with/without AC, with/without battery installed.
-
I meant all you have to do is stress the gpu-only, and it shutdowns ?
you don't need to load the cpu ? seems like a hardware fault. -
Exactly. I already stressed the cpu only, and no problem at all, no shutdown. It is gpu stress that causes it to shutdown. And it's wierd, i dont recall to have the gpu temps going high so fast before. It is like instantly rises from 50c to 70c when 100% gpu load, then adds 1c per second.
-
did that to me when my heatpipe was not bent correctly.
but then, frequencies were also throttling before any shutdown..
you might want to try to check / re-screw the heatpipe, just in case.
if win8 install did that, well.... impressive trick from MS ! -
Yeah, cant blame win8, but it was such a coincidence!!! Hehe
Anyway, all of my questions is so i have knowledge of what maybe it is going on and what led to occur this. Luckly(or not), i got the 1-year warranty and I dont wanna lose it now, so i'll let the reseller handle the problem. Otherwise, i'd do it myself, starting with thermal paste(also could be something this simple, right?) and try the bending method. -
never bend anything, mine was not bent correctly because I messed it up..
can't be just the thermal paste.
it would need a serious contact problem, then again the freq. are supposed to throttle before any shutdown, so if you didn't see that, it's more likely a faulty gpu. -
Probably, never saw any throttling, i would have to keep a log to see that happening. On MSI Afterburner, just now I subtracted 200mhz from each clock(core and mem), then i can keep around 75c on full load, at least i can play something until im back home on monday and send it to the reseller. Hope the warranty cover this faulty gpu problem.

Anyone know why Crysis is running really badly? I'm telling it to run with the 650m, OC'ing the 650m and processor and still it's running like crap. It looks like the Intel 4000 chip is running it but I can't be sure. It works pretty badly with Windows 8 too... I only have it working on the 32-bit version right now.
-
How bad is bad? crysis will tax your graphics card to the limit, it is particularly stressful on the Shader power side but it has been shown to also be very sensitive to GPU memory bandwidth (see Crysis warhead results between AMD 7970 and GTX 680). Sadly our GT650m card is shader powerful but very memory bandwidth starved so I do not expect great framerates even with overclocking.

I assume he did not only tried on ultra, so it should be really smooth.
Crysis II was on mine.. -
Crysis can run at 30fps on all high at 1366x768 on a W110ER, I've seen a video of it lol.
I'm getting 20fps MAX at medium, with no AA. My 6630m (Weak card) could achieve 30fps at all medium @ 1366x768.
Crysis 2 is much less of a system hog than Crysis 1. It's badly coded, hence why it runs like crap on anything but top spec systems, but still, my frames are terrible.
Crysis 2 will run on all max without the DX11 extras at 30fps ish I believe, while with DX11 it'll run at 15-20. Maybe if you did an INSANE amount of OC'ing you could get it up further. -
Hey guys,
I wonder how is the battery life now with the prema 1.4 UV bios ?
Can i get over 4h with Word and wifi only ?
I've read that the battery life is the same for the i5 (duo) and the i7 (quad) but does it apply to the new i7-3632QM -
APPARENTLY you can get 4h with the UV bios, but I haven't managed to get close to that yet :/
I'm usually around the 2 hour, 2:30 mark. I have the 3632QM.
Doesn't make much difference even adding 700MHz clock to it, but it's still very poor battery life. I hope to get it improved at some point but haven't found the answer yet.
I do know that my graphics driver is running at too higher clock and haven't found a solution for that yet. -
Hi guys,
Figure I'll chime in with some of my own experiences.
I picked up my W110ER on Saturday after ordering with PCSpecialist here in the UK. I ordered with the Pentium 2020m processor and planned on fitting my own Samsung 830 SSD.
With regards to battery life under moderate to low use (low being typing a document out or using the web, moderate being watching 720p video) I was getting between 4:30 and 5 hours.
Yesterday I picked up a 3610QM to fit in, and having done so ran the same battery test. I scored in essence the exact same, the laptop shut down after 4:42 of being on.
What did the test consist of? Well it was streaming video over the wifi and involved playing back one episode of the Simpsons (standard definition) and 3 loops of Rush Hour 3 (720p MP4). The laptop actually shut down about 15 minutes in to the 4th run through Rush Hour.
I bought the 2020m for 2 reasons, 1 was the price, and 2 was hoping battery life would be improved. As these tests point out though battery life did not improve a discernible amount. In fact I would peg it at exactly the same. Under heavy load is probably a different issue, but I didn't run battery tests while gaming. For me, streaming video over wifi is the most intensive thing I would do on battery.I imagine if I had stored the video on the drive and turned wifi off I may very well have hit 5 hours+
I think I might be running a newer version, as my bios is 09 which seems to have some Windows 8 related stuff. It seems power consumption has improved drastically as well. With the 3610QM, running Prime 95 maximum attained temperature on any core was 81C. Maximum CPU temperature while playing CoH was 73, GPU reached 69.
As I have the newer kernel I cannot use Prema's UV mod (I don't think so anyway) so it seems there are improvements to be had for you all soon hopefully.
If anyone has any questions between the 2020M and the 3610QM please do ask
-
Haha PCSpecialist too, awesome ^^
I really look forward to this 09 BIOS, I'm using the UV mod and getting the poor battery life. Strangely, my temperatures seem really good O.O Whether I'm playing BF3, Sleeping Dogs, Skyrim or anything really, my GPU seems to sit around 70 degrees as does the CPU. Even when I OC it up to 2.9GHz with throttlestop, it's still at the same level. The cooling seems pretty amazing in this laptop to me.
Also, what GPU driver are you using? Is yours clocking down to 135MHz? And is the 09 BIOS, uEFI? Thanks! -
I've had the same autonomy with .03 bios
Just switched to prema 1.4UV, not used long enough to report on battery yet, but gpu temps are much better !! -
UEFI boot is supported but you need to select Windows 8 in the bios before the option becomes available.
I'm using version 306.97 and the clocks seem to be working well.
Consumption estimated by battery bar during my test was between 11 and 14 watts. -
Hi mate,
Did you get the matte screen version? what are your opinions of it? is it the same panel that HTWingnut has got?
cheers -
Yup, I have the matte screen.
I don't believe it is the same one that HTWingnut has, mine is :
"The stock screen has hardware ID of IVO0489 which is Infovision Optoelectronics."
The display itself is nice, and for a matte screen it looks pretty crisp too. It's very usable on the lowest but 1 brightness level which is great for battery life. Viewing angles aren't too bad and maximum brightness is good.
Bear in mind though, my previous two notebooks have been Acer Timeline's which have pretty lousy screens
-
Awesome... When can I get my hands on this BIOS?
I'm using Win 8, so it'd be perfect to use.
I just hope it doesn't sacrifice temperatures by using the higher voltages. One thing that is amazing in the UV bios are the temps and processor OC'ing abilities. -
how to improve battery life?
-
Support.1@XOTIC PC Company Representative
You can improve battery through many different means. Reducing screen brightness is going to make a huge difference, next would be to go into Windows power options and play around with settings especially in the advanced settings if you want an in depth look. If you turn on the battery saver features it'll give you the best battery life. -
is it possible to get 5-6 hours watch movie??
-
how do you guys clean the oil off the keyboard. tried wiping it down with rubbing alcohol, but, that doesn't seem to help much.
-
Support.1@XOTIC PC Company Representative
For heavier residue, I use GooGone but that's pretty extreme cases. You'll typically be able to use isopropyl alcohol on a qtip or paper towel and that should be just fine. -
Support.1@XOTIC PC Company Representative
6 might be pushing it since watching a movie isn't exactly idle and the screen will be on the whole time. I'd say you're more likely to get 4.5 or so movie watching if you have everything dumbed down in the power settings. Wouldn't be the best experience doing so, but it's possible. -
Still noone know when this 1.9 bios is coming/where it is available?
EDIT: FINALLY Crysis works with the Nvidia GPU. Took forcing the GPU for all applications and setting it to Compatibility for XP SP3.
EDIT 2: Was getting 30fps solid on most Very High settings at 768p, 2x AA. Had my GPU overclocked by 100 core and 115 mem and CPU at 2.9GHz. I think it's awesome you can get that out of a laptop nowadays. However, 1080p wrecked the W110ER and I was getting 20-25 FPS at all medium with 2x AA, same clocks. -
Yep, the 128-bit DDR3 GPU vRAM is quite limiting with higher resolution performance.
-
Ahh, old memories but runs good.
I dug out my old Crysis DVD and installed on both my X775 i5(2430) with 560M and the W110ER with external DVD drive.
This game is definitely GPU limited. Using the built-in DX10 - 64bit GPU benchmark, I got close numbers copied during the third run.
The X-775 took 40.38 sec @ 49.52 FPS and the W110ER took 44.46 sec @ 44.98 FPS.
Both were at the vanilla high settings using the W110 rez of 1366x768 on both. No OC!
The built in bench used to create a detailed text file but it either fails under W7 or I have not found it.
The 650m works fine at the native rez of 1366x768 but no way would I want to push it at higher rez. My 560M, at native 1400x900, is down to 45.10 sec @ 44.35 FPS. This almost matches the 650m at native 768p.
Anyone please PM me a safe no/cd option. The $20 PC download option is nuts. I hate key disks and want a way to run it on the W110 without DVD drive. -
Always used megagames fix section, rarely failed on me
-
Yes, I retried my old ViTALiTY file from long ago. The 64bit kept failing but I later tried the 32bit app.
The 32bit works fine and in both machines the built in benches are the same as the 64 bit; so coding was not well optimized?
Crysis should be another poster child for really bad DRM. I would much rather see the money and time spent by EA go to the original developers, no? -
War on piracy is the same as war on drugs, a huge loss of money, ressources, rights for almost no profit.
Plus, they tend to push the underground market into an even more aggressive deployment and response, lucky us =) -
The "War on piracy" is a retarded one. Large corporate enterprises virtually run our governments because they can be bought over. They're trying to come up with ways to censor the internet and block piracy sites all the time. Media is not just overpriced, but to a ridiculous extent, and all of the efforts that the government/these companies make to try and suppress us are in vain. The more they publicize it on the news, the more people pirate. The fact is, piracy is NOT a problem. These companies EASILY make up the money they need but their greed goes to unbelievable lengths. Most people buy stuff, pirates are a minority, and a lot of pirates only do it on occasion.
However, if you're looking for a NoCD, there is one on TPB, but it's only for 32 bit and patch 1.2.1. It's working on my W110ER nicely. -
I just got back from an round trip 11K air mile for job with my trusty W110ER open on the seat tray.
For movies and music, the W110 was good for around 4 hours. Battery wear now 2.3 after five full discharges, FWIW.
I find the i-pod touch/smartphones/i-pads and the like far better for long air trips due to handling and battery life. However the job has weight restrictions so the W110 wins on all around use and minimal toy count on the job. 4 hours is around my limit for one sitting but a second battery would be first option for full 8 hours of use, or light gaming on i-gpu. None of the Boeing/Airbus planes had seat power, in slave quarters, or battery would not be an issue.
The W110 grippy case textures are absolutely perfect, no fingerprint monster here. Never will I buy a shiny black anything down the road unless it’s dishwasher safe.
I find the audio has a bit more power than my UL30vt and a tad cleaner DAC for headphone use. Good noise reduction headphones highly recommended for jet travel!
My only real gripe would be to move the power button inward. Twice I killed power by snagging the edge of laptop during handling.
Gave my 8 hour UL30vt to wife work
-
I can't count the number of times I accidently hit it while giving the laptop to a friend !
I wish I could intercept it and open a shutdown menu instead :-/
edit: turns out I can =)
will add that option to my Optimus watcher asap ! -
Thx...I do recommend you scan the crap out of any no/cd files. Glad you got 1.2.1 running well. It sounded like you were a bit disgusted from your fame rates from your post.
cheers -
Hey guys, just for the info: I sent my w110er to the reseller on monday and i just received it back, apparently with the problem solved.
The tech guy said it had little dust on the edges of the heat sink, so he did a full cleaning, and replaced the thermal paste.
I tested it with Kombustor(Furry and Tessy test) and it reaches around 79C max for a long 3minutes and parks there(it reached this temp to higher in less than 20sec before), and I no longer have shutdowns. I have it on around 49C on idle now.
I guess it is solved.
Are those temps you guys have on yours? -
This one is all good. There are only two, I forget which one >.<
And no, not at all disgusted by my frames any more!
It just took an excessive amount of forcing on the program to get Win8 to use the Nvidia GPU on Crysis. Now it's great! -
Does anyone have any idea where I might be able to get spare case parts at all?
Not had much luck so far
-
my reseller in france had some, I had to wait weeks to hear the price, then I said no way
it's pcw.fr if you're interested, don't know if they speak english though. -
Does anyone know when Clevo / Sager releases their new models? I see the W110ER came out in April 2012, just wondering if they are going to replace it with a new model in April 2013. I have been buying Asus Gaming laptops for the past 8 years but I would like a more compact unit as I'm on the road a lot. I currently have a G73 with a 1GB Radeon 5870 so the GT650 in the w110ER isn't much of an upgrade. Thanks for any info!
-
Hey all, considering picking one of these up, was wondering if anyone could help me with some advice, Im looking to buy from xotic pc, is the upgrade from the i5 3210 to the i7 3610 worth it? Also which screen would be better? the glossy or the matte version? Anyone else able to chime in on the build quality as well? Thanks in advance
-
I'm going to assume they'll do a refresh of some sort next year, but I wouldn't hope for more than a 650m equivalent in the next gen, because I imagine it's very hard to get an MXM card into an 11.6 inch form factor. However, your Asus gaming machine will be using a 900p screen at least, no? The W110ER is using a 1366x768 resolution, at a high DPI, so if you do plan to run games natively, it'll run pretty much everything maxed, or very near maxed settings and maintain at least 30fps. If you're looking to game on an external monitor and you're looking at 1080p, then you might want to look at something else, because the 2GB DDR3 memory chokes the 650m at that resolution. Some games run alright, but games like Crysis suffer massively. I'll warn you that battery life can also be lackluster, although I'm not sure your Asus machine will have fared much better, but apparently the 09 BIOS available now from XMG addresses the issue.
The i7 3610QM is a massive upgrade from the i5 3210M. You're going from 2 cores 4 threads to 4 cores 8 threads. From what I've seen, there is little difference in battery life and the quad core can give you a massive boost in threaded applications and also games that require quad core processing. In a lot of new games you'll be maxing the i5 out and there's little headroom for the future, whereas the i7 is often under 40% utilization. I've also found multitasking to be much better with my i7 quad over my i7 dual. but there are other variables that probably account for that difference.
As for the screen, DEFINITELY go with matte. There is next to no difference in screen quality, but gloss will stop you from using the screen in sunlight. The W110ER has a very good matte coating.
And the build quality is pretty damned good. It doesn't flex in many places other than the screen, and that's acceptable, it has a high quality texture coating, but I have found it to mark and damage very easily when it's in a bag, so a neoprene protector would not be a bad idea. I certainly have no quality complaints.
Hope I've helped ^^ -
Im finding my BT combo wireless card a dog. (6230 AGN 2x2 HMC) Connectivity is good but download rates are typically half of what my low end Atheros AR9285 can do.
I have checked it on several internet speed sites with same results. I read this is due to Intel dropping the ball with the BT combo. I have a faster spare card but hate giving up BT and a USB port for Wireless mouse.
Or, did one of you genius find a work around? The attached benches shows the two cards, the 6230 AGN 2x2 HMC on the left.
Cheers
