Could anyone recommend a laptop sleeve for w230st/ss ? I was considering slappa 15,4 sleeve for 30$ but I think it might be too big...

I have neoprene one like this for my 15.6" and really like it.

Make sure you click on the "new" options and order one that ships from the states (assuming you're in the states) -

Is this the same one?

Thats looks like the same one. When I was looking for mine I noticed a lot shipped from Asia, which theres nothing wrong with that except the longer ship time. On that site I checked their shipping page and it says "HongKong air mail, China post, or Singapore post" I see you're in Nederland, if you're comfortable with that ship time go for it. -

I order at the Chinaman all the time, so it's already on the way. I'll let you know if it's any good.

you should have searched this thread...
this is the one I have, after a number of other people recommended it. and it's perfect. fits the laptop just right, no sliding around within. good amount of padding. and its really soft on the inside, so no scratch marks.
small pocket in which u can fit a usb stick.

Ah this one is excellent! Thx for advice. I would search this thread but it has 400 pages
...

No worries, was just mentioning the search part. Anyway, you're welcome. It's a great sleeve. I forgot to mention, it's also got a sort of hand strap on the outside... sort of gimmicky, although it does end up making it easier to carry, so another plus.

Can someone tell me what this little slot-like thing underneath the battery is for?
Verzonden vanaf een Galaxy Nexus met CM10 -
So I just ordered a mSATA SSD to replace my hard disk. Will I be able to just slot in the SSD, clone the contents of my hard disk onto it, then take out the hard disk and continue as usual? Is there something I need to watch out for?
-
Support.1@XOTIC PC Company Representative
You'll want to do a clean install. Cloning from a HDD to SSD generally gives you nothing but blue screens due to different ways the drives organize data.
-
On a recent installed version of Windows 8.1 I was able to move it from one Sata SSD to another Sata SSD using XML Drive Image Copy.
Not sure if this would be different for SATA --> mSata.
It was free and may be worth a shot.
Best Free Drive Cloning Software
There are others listed there, but I only used XML Drive Image. -
I/O point for the hamsters which power your machine.
They work in shifts.
FouchSoftware and LostCoast707 like this. -
It's a SIM slot.

What should I feed them?
But it needs an mSATA device to work I suppose?

Bought my W230ST this year and I'm extremely happy with it. The only problem is that I see the SS and I'm thinking what if I could fit the 870 in this thing? Anyway i will be able to use this machine for at least 5 years without upgrading..
-
You can't upgrade the GPU in the ST or SS.
-
I would assume so. Unfortunately I haven't seen anyone using this or any resellers that offer it as an option. Perhaps it was designed for this but never actually put into use.
-
Hi all, I've been reading about the w230st (and w230ss) for a few days and it's the best candidate so far to replace an old compaq nc6400.
I'm seriously concerned about the fan though. Is it really that bad? I'm already annoyed by the fan of my nc6400 which is relatively quiet, although it kicks in quite often.
I read about the prema mod and I'd like to know if I should expect the fan to kick in at full speed just when browsing the internet or doing office work.
I'd use this laptop mostly to virtualize some VMs, to program some python code and to do the occasional gaming. I can accept the fan to spin at full speed during gaming since I'd use isolating headphones anyways but not while surfing the web on the couch
As a side note: how are the touchpad buttons? hard and clicky? I love the soft, rubbery feeling of Thinkpads and business Compaq/HP touchpad buttons and I'd miss it badly...
Thanks -

What exactly is this Prema mod? Does it change anything? Or better yet, do I need it?
Verzonden vanaf een Galaxy Nexus met CM10 -
Thanks. Is the quiet mode os independent or managed by some windows specific software? I'm planning to run Linux on it with the laptop mode tools.
Do you find the touchpad buttons noisy?
From what I can understand it's very interesting for overclockers (frequency tuning, voltages, etc.).
It also includes firmware updates for specific components. I'm more interested in being able to tame the fan thanks to this mod. -
Quiet mode is a profile you can select with Clevo's software which is, as far as I know, Windows only.
-
Oh snap... Thanks.
-
Does quiet mode generally use less resources, thus making the machine not run as fast?
What about when gaming? -
It limits the CPU to 1.6 GHz. Not sure about the GPU. It might under clock it as well but don't quote me on that. For gaming it depends on the game. Some run fine in quiet mode. The more intensive ones do not.
-
If that's all it does then it should be fairly trivial to fiddle with the governor and cap the CPU. The gpu might be trickier depending on how the nvidia drivers have become in the last years. I've been surviving with an Intel gpu in the past years.
-
I have just received tracking number for a w230ss from Xotic and i already think how to improve it
- Can I upgrade it with SSD without warranty being void ? -
I can't speak for XoticPC or Sager, but I don't think that will void your warranty. As long as you don't damage any thing in the process. I don't think there are any "Warranty Void if removed" stickers that you would need to remove.
I ordered mine w/o any drives, and plan on installing my own. -
Support.3@XOTIC PC Company Representative
FouchSoftware is right, you wont void any warranty by adding or upgrading your own parts, but any damage caused by doing so is not covered so just be careful.
-
Where do i download SW for this quiet mode ?
-
You should start by downloading all of the drivers from the sagernotebook website and then open up the control panel with start menu button + escape and checking profiles there.
*Also, unrelated:
Despite the fact that my power settings show no option turned on regarding hibernation, every time I shut my computer down and then turn it back on, it says "resuming hibernation." Why is this? -
in fact you don't really need it under Linux, with the Prema bios the fan is off most of the time. It will start spinning if you're doing heavy computations though, but if you're wondering about internet/music/coding/.. then the fan is mostly off or barely audible under linux w/Prema.
-
If you are running Windows 8 (or 8.1), that's normal. It has a system that creates an image of the system every time you shut down and restart, instead of shutting it down completely (in the way you probably mean referring to previous windows versions).
You can disable it: Fast Startup - Turn On or Off in Windows 8 -
And how about the touchpad buttons? Are they noisy?
Yes, I'm obsessed
-
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
The touch pad should be sensitive enough to click by tapping it.
-
It's called "HOTKEY" from Clevo's website: CLEVO - Download
Press Fn+Esc key to bring up the control panel and you can set the quiet mode there. -
Ok, thank you, but again that does not answer my question...
I'd appreciate if anyone can tell me whether clicking the touchpad buttons produces a noisy, plasticky sound or are the buttons soft and quiet (lenovo style)? -
I don't find that the touchpad buttons on mine make much noise at all. I don't have a lenovo to compare to, but seems quiet to me.

Any way to upgrade the 765m to an 860m, assuming I could find an 860m?
I know the W230ST doesn't have an MXM card, but I wasn't sure if the 765m is soldered or in a socket (the latter would hold out some hope for an upgrade someday). -
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
There is no such thing as a socketed gpu in the client space certainly. Too many pins required.
-
sorry if this has been asked, but can someone please point me to how the notebook handles cooling? Thanks.

Cools fine, only a little noisy when under heavy load.

Does anybody know where I can order a replacement fan for my W230ST? Mine has developed a fault is making an incredibly annoying and loud grinding noise constantly. I'm in the UK but prepared to order from abroad if necessary.
-
Check its screws, too loose or too tightened, they usually cause that noise.
-
Thanks lastnikita, but I already tried absolutely everything with the screw tightening and it's definitely the fan itself that is faulty. I thought it might be a vibration noise but removed the fan from the motherboard completely and it still makes the noise when i spin it independently outside the case.
My laptop is still under warranty with PC Specialist but they are being very unhelpful and not getting back to me so I would prefer to pay to order the fan from some other source as long as I can get a replacement quickly, the noise is driving me crazy!
-
I would also try to oil it then ! Had kind of the same pb with PCS, customer service is so-so.
If you can't find any in the UK (which I doubt), I know one or two reseller in france which may be able to help. -
Hi everyone,
I'm about to replace my Macbook Air with this model (XMG P304) and wanted to ask you guys what CPU should I choose. The laptop will be used for gaming, multimedia, web surfing and some Office work.
The options are:
i5-4340M (2C/4T)
i7-4610M (2C/4T)
i7-4700MQ (4C/8T)
GPU is GTX 860M 2GB Maxwell.
Both the i5-4340M and i7-4610 are 37W whereas the i7-4700MQ is 47W. Should I be concerned about heat dissipation if I choose the i7 quadcore? I know the 860m runs really cool but I'm a bit lost on the CPU side of things...
Thanks for your help. -
I guess it depends on what you are looking for. Do you need / want to have the quad-core?
I have the 4700MQ, and don't have temperature problems at all. The dual-cores may get better battery life, although, I would suspect that it would only matter much if you are working it hard. I bet they aren't much different in power usage while idle, although that's just talking out my butt with no experience to back it up. -
Try asking mysn.co.uk to sell it to you seperately.
German mysn was able to sell it to me without a problem, I guess their uk branch should be able to do the same. They took 34.50€ back then
