Hey guys, simple question here, not necessarily just related to this laptop. I'm having issues with a 'glitching' noise when listening to music. Games work fine and everything else seems ok but when i play music, whether it be on soundcloud or itunes, i get this glitching noise, pretty much puts the songs in slow mo for a couple of seconds on and off. Really pissing me off! If ya have any clues as to what could be causing this please hit me up with an answerthanks fellas. Dylan

Have you looked at an audio lag monitoring program and cut out processes one by one?

Could not remember the name but that was exactly what I meant.

Hey Guys,
How did you deal with the W230ST's CPU temperature?
I have had mine for 6 months and the CPU temperature is just way too high. If I don't use XTU and downclock the processor of 1Ghz (2.4Ghz instead of 3.4Ghz) the processor is 99°C (210°F). With the downclock it's around 90°C (194°F). Of course in full when I'm playing BF3/4 or Far Cry 3 with a Notepal U2 Plus.
For now, I'll see with the after sales service to have a 4702MQ instead of the 4700MQ, I should get better temps...
My configuration: Clevo W230ST
- i7 4700MQ
- SSD mSATA Crucial M500 120Go
- HDD 1to 5400RPM Samsung
- 2x 4Go DDR3 1600Mhz Gskill SK
- Ecran Full HD LED 13,3"
- GTX 765m 2go DDR5
- Windows 7 64bit -
-
It's a badly applied thermal paste, you'll get the same temps with the 4702 if the paste is applied the same way, redo it yourself is your best move.
-
Thank you for your answers!
I already repasted several times but the results were pretty much the same. I tried with Arctic Silver 5 and MX4.
As for undervolting, I tried to but didn't see any improvement concerning temps.
I repasted a lot of computers before, I'm newbie on this forum but I have been using gaming laptops for several years.
What temperatures do you guys have? -
-
-
Didn't see that were while playing BF3/4 or Farcry 3... Then your temps are a tad high considering the massive underclocking, but not by much, the paste advice may not have been the best then. Did you also repaste the GPU ? How hot does it get ? As Frewster said, the heatsink is shared, so if you're gpu gets really hot your cpu will too.
-
That's huge brinker =/
Do you have the 4700MQ?
As for me the GPU is always under 75°C! -
Seems fine
-
He'll definitely have had to repaste the GPU since they share the heatsink. No way to only do one...
-
Just don't touch the paste already in place.. not the best way for sure

Very nice temps
-
Still reckon my CPU is too hot though. No way I'm getting it below 65C in idle without my cooling pad anymore - it used to. Repasted twice recently, sadly no luck.
-
If you flashed the bios it may have an impact on idle temps, which are a little erratic to begin with
-
Yeah, I run PremaMods bios on it - latest version.
-
I meant that it could explain your "new temps"

It does edit the fan tables to quieten the machine. It could also be the heatsink itself.
-
Mine has only gotten louder over time, given that the fans start above 65C - and it always is above that without the cooling stand. I don't suspect a heatsink can get worse over time. I've even gone as far as trying to lap the heatsink, with no improvement. I've been running PremaMod bios since it was released, and the temperature rise only occurred months later, not instantly after the upgrade. And no, my heatsink is not filled with dust as I take care to clean it up every now and then.
Also.. Why on earth does the system drain more power on battery than with the PSU connected? According to HWmonitor, the system is around 4.7-4.8W having the PSU connected, and when I disconnect it to run on battery it's up to 5.4-5.5W instead? Seems a bit odd. -
I've also been having a strange temperature and noise rise in the past week or so. Used to idle in the low 50s and noe I'm in the low 60s with the fan audibly going.

Couple of options:
(1) A trick that sometimes works is use a rubber band to create grip.. like this:
(2) See if a very fine pair of needle nose pliers can grip the screw from the edges and turn it.
(3) Use a Pro Grabit Broken Bolt and Damaged Screw Extractor [ link] (although you'd probably need a smaller size than what I've linked to)
(4) As you mentioned, dremel a new groove and then unscrew with a flathead screwdriver.
Good luck! -
I'll try the rubber band trick and if that doesn't work... maybe I'll use my dremel. Then the fun will be finding a replacement screw. It's a shame the screws are such poor quality.

There could be different monitoring of battery and ac draw on the motherboard.

Question about Intel XTU:
I have my dynamic cpu voltage lowered at -80.
Can I play with the number of active cores? What is safe? And how exactly does it change performance? Thanks -
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
Active cores is how many cores are currently in use.

I'm looking for a more the technical explanation -
Any ideas here? Thanks. -
I'm thinking of buying a used (but not much) W230ST with i7-4700MQ and GTX 765M to replace my Alienware M11x-R3 with i7-2637M and GT 540M.
I do video editing against the clock, while having 3 browsers with lots of tabs on the go, and maybe some recording at the same time (recording mainly done on other laptops) - and Thunderbird emails.
The video editing is not HD but I need to get things done quickly, while live action is going on, and at the moment I get a fair amount of freeze-ups in software.
Should I fork out an extra £500 for a top-specced SS? I'd rather not
(It's hell trying to find a small laptop with sufficient power - even 13" is bigger than I'd like.) -
You won't find anything smaller with the CPU performance that the W230SS or ST offers. You will only need an SSD as fast as your system can process it, and pretty much any SATA III SSD will do since they run at least 500MB/sec sequential, and I doubt you can process 1GB of video every two seconds.
-
Thank you, HTWingNut. Unfortunately someone has bought the laptop I was looking at, but I'll bank your info for future reference.
I currently have a Samsung 840 Pro in my M11x. I get the impression that it's my CPU that's the bottleneck and that I shouldn't be too concerned to get a very high-end graphics card, which would be appropriate for gaming - which I never have time for -
The "SS" version on PC Specialist has Intel HD Audio - I asked them to check for Stereo Mix availability and they said it has NOT got it - they even went and checked two display models. He says there's been no stereo mix since Windows 7 but that is not true, Realtek has it in my two different W7 M11x's, and my brother has W8.1 with Realtek and stereo mix.
I have this problem with Dell Precision with IDT sound card and have to use an external speaker plugged into the headphone socket so that volume can be reduced or muted without affecting the recordings, it's a helluva nuisance, I don't want dangly bits on my laptops.
Could anyone tell me if their ST definitely does not have stereo mix? I'm hoping that the chap I spoke to at PCS didn't look for disabled and disconnected devices and therefore made a mistake. Faint hope -
my w370st is idt and has stereo mix if that helps

Anyone considering mSata upgrades? Just a note, do not get a Crucial M500 if you plan on running it in the mSata/3G slot near the battery. The Crucial drive already is a high-temp runner (high 50's) and that bay only kicks temp up. Had to swap place with my Kingston mS200 drive in the other mSata bay. My Kingston was sitting high 40's before and after the swap it is now high 50's. The Crucial would've been useless in the mSata/3G slot as it ran around 67-68C - now sits in high 50's in the other slot. Anyway, just a heads-up!

Does anyone have an experience with connecting 2 monitors to w230st? I've tried to connect one 1920x1080 via hdmi and the second one 1920x1200 via VGA. The nice thing is that I get 3 usable screens! The thing that I don't fully understand is that I can't get a proper resolution on 1920x1200 monitor - the resolution is not listed (and monitor is named as native display - not the real monitor name). When I checked what graphics card is used Win 8.1 says that it uses Intel Hd4600 for all 3 displays. Has anyone succeed with such config, or is it just limitation of hardware? Can usage of 765m can be forced?
-
And this was the day my 10 month old Kingston mSata died on me... Just stopped working - shut it down and didn't want to boot into Windows the next time. Gone in BIOS..
Clean install with Win 8.1 Pro now on my new Crucial mSata. -
reminds me to backup my ssd once in a while...
-
Still not keeping a backup of anything but my music library, on the WD Black HDD I have installed.. Feel like a good old mechanical drive is less prone to fail all of a sudden.. -
Just wondering, can i go from the Prema Mod v2 to the stock bios on prema's site
