Do you mean the way it's spread over the core or do you want to know what paste is it exactly?
Ad 1) I don't know, I won't be taking it apart for now. I'm in the 3rd day of installing gentoo and I'm far from ready. Yes, it's my first time with this distro.
    Ad 2) http://www.revoltec.com/volumes/PDM/_products/rz032/rz032_db_en.pdf

I guess I indeed need a delid. No problem, my brother has the tool.

The pattern the paste leaves behind when removing can indicate how good the contact is. If the paste is overly dry or there is too little then it's a good indication that a re-paste will have a large impact on temperatures.

Was questioning the spread and the contact. A delid with a good compound will certainly make a difference, too.

I'll see the spread at the time of upgrade. Now I just don't have any paste to replace this one.

Quick calculation for W650KK1 with 7700k:
    CPU power draw: 90W
    GPU power draw: 75W
Screen other (I have no idea, so a conservative number): 5W
    170W peak power consumption, 6-cell battery. At 3.7V/cell, that's over 7.5A continuous per-cell discharge.
Quite a lot. How does it hold? Does it get very hot when stressing both CPU and GPU?

The machine will not reach full clocks on battery (no high performance machine will).

oh gawd, please never expect to use your machine full-tilt on battery, thats just not worth it  only do those kinda calculations when checking for the proper wattage of the PSU :)

With good enough cells 7.5A is OK. I just don't expect that Clevo uses them. Nevertheless upgrade should be possible.

Good enough cells in specially designed housing (weight/cost) for what would allow 20 mins of full load. Same expense for a larger regular battery would make more sense.

    Hi guys,

i'm thinking about getting the W650KK1 with a i5 6600T, what do you think of this cpu ?
    Performance are between a 6400 and a 6500, but with a 35W TDP

You're better off buying i5 7300HQ or i7 7700HQ . These CPUs are way faster and I'm sure you can find a better deal with them .

Anyone know if these use eDP (30/40) or LVDS? I would love to pick one up and replace the panel with a cheap 1080 120hz panel and a delidded 6600T. While I know it only has a 1050 Ti, I imagine a 1050 Ti could easily push 120hz Overwatch with some slight graphics adjustments. For the $630 price tag over at Eluktronics, it's simply hard to beat the price :performance for a socketable laptop.

I was configuring mine without an SSD. I was also going to call and see if I could forego a Windows OS, and see if that would save any additional money. Basically, I want to see how barebones they are willing to sell this system, if I use all of my own hardware and what not.

This laptop is now officially barebones! Eluktronics offers it for $500 flat (no CPU, memory or drive). I'd say it's best configuration is with 16GB of ram for $600, and you use your own drive and CPU. For OS cost, you can either use your preferred flavor of Linux, or go with the Windows Insider Program for a free OS.

I highly recommend using a delidded 6700/7700(T or non-T) to keep thermals in check. I may pick one up, and see if I can tweak the 1050 Ti voltage curve to allow for better thermals without compromising on clocks as well. I'd also want to check to see whether or not the screen is eDP or LVDS. If it's eDP30, i'd love to replace the stock panel with the AUO B156HTN05.2 120hz panel, as that would offer smoother gaming experiences in competitive titles such as Overwatch. Wouldn't be a bad little laptop at all once it's all upgraded.

Just spoke to Eluktronics support, and it's been confirmed that this laptop uses a 30 pin eDP panel. Anyone know if the AUO B156HTN05.2 uses 30 pin eDP or not? @Mr. Fox , sorry to tag you in this thread, but I believe you have experience with that panel, so you might know it's eDP pin-count. At the very least, this laptop isn't BGA, right? :p

has anyone already put in a XEON CPU? The E3-1225 v5 from the T30 Dell Servers can be bought very cheap at the moment :-D (The complete Server costs in Germany ~259€ = 303,94$ because of the 100€ cashback that Dell is offering). So it came in my mind to buy such a T30 and swap the CPU to Celeron/Pentium, sell it again or using it as NAS and put the XEON into the Laptop.

Will Optimus still work with the Xeons Intel® HD Graphics P530 ?

I'd be interested to know to. I'm think about getting this as a little cheap and cheerful project to tinker with and use for work at a later date. Trouble is 60hz is a deal breaker for me.

I am currently working on sourcing a panel now. I'd like to get my hands on one of the 120hz IPS panels so that I don't have to sacrifice color or brightness (something the stock panel does quite well). I am also working on a way to improve the mounting pressure of the GPU heatsink. After that, i'll be testing various CPU's. Specifically a delidded 7700T and 7700, to see what kind of thermals one can get under load with these. The low-leakage of the 7700T makes it an extremely great candidate for this specific laptop, especially once you get it undervolted to about 0.9v~.

One thing that I need to get sorted out, is that I cannot get this laptop to use advanced turbo (all-core boost to single core boost table speed). For example: If you have a 7700, it will use the stock boost table of 4200 for 1 core, 4100 for 3 cores, 4000 for 4 cores, rather than run all 4 cores at 4ghz. It's not that big of a deal, since 4ghz on an i7 is still plenty fast, especially once you factor in the fact that it's a 1050 Ti on a 1080p panel, but I'd like to get it sorted out for people that use lower end i5's or T series CPU's, that want to get more performance out of their CPU without upgrading entirely.

Wonder if Prema would be interested in taking a look at this laptop, assuming he can get his hands on one? At it's low price, would be a nice way to introduce a broader audience to his work, if that were ever a goal of his.

Curious MageTank , did you try overclocking the stock display? If you haven't would you mind seeing what you can get?
As far as the 120hz screens go did you locate one yet?

I have not, I'll give it a try once I get the time. Currently working on helping friends with their memory overclocking atm.

As for screens, I have been looking at this: h̶t̶t̶p̶s̶:̶/̶/̶w̶w̶w̶.̶l̶a̶p̶t̶o̶p̶s̶c̶r̶e̶e̶n̶.̶c̶o̶m̶/̶E̶n̶g̶l̶i̶s̶h̶/̶s̶c̶r̶e̶e̶n̶-̶p̶a̶r̶t̶-̶n̶u̶m̶b̶e̶r̶/̶B̶1̶5̶6̶H̶A̶N̶0̶4̶.̶0̶~̶H̶W̶1̶A̶/̶

This is the exact same 120hz IPS panel used in both the EVGA SC15 and Asus Zephyrus. I just don't know if the website or pricing is legit.

EDIT: I was wrong. The exact model EVGA and ASUS use is the B156HAN04.2, not 4.0. Disregard that link.

If you can OC the screen to around 100hz I might take a bite at this machine considering it's so cheap. I kind of wish it had a 1060 but for the price it's astonishing value even if it's half BGA. At least one can reuse the CPU / RAM if a newer shell comes out.

I managed to get 76hz out of mine before anomalies started to appear on screen. However, I am having a difficult time with NVCP. I cannot tell if I am dealing with a hybrid Optimus setup or not, as half my options go missing at random times. I might try EDID flashing this panel to see if I can circumvent Nvidia's drivers, to get it to run higher native.

Depends on the package. Usually it's side loaded; make a bootable USB and copy the files to it, boot from the USB and go from there.
