As far as i know support for MXM GPU is dead and Clevo will discontinue this laptop. Maybe the new RTX 3080Ti Mobile will be available in MXM and that's the last breath of that good dream. It seems that laptops are really doomed to BGA (12900KB/12980HK, 12900HK, 6980HK and soldered GPUs) what a misfortune, next gen of GPUs are expected to surpass 500W then we will have an even bigger difference, this is the end of the line for true DTR experience, was a good run tho.

Or just have it in some proprietary form. It does suck.

I'm literally using one of these, and i never upgraded because i can't. It's being same almost the same as soldered.
If Clevo does that i hope they learned with Alienware/DGFF mistakes to not repeat them.Last edited: Jan 6, 2022 -
How do you replace the cmos battery

This is indeed a sad day..thats it for me then. I will switch to a desktop in mini atx format in the future i think and just get a **** bga laptop for office stuff

175W 3080TI and water cooling in a laptop. Our 3080 should be already 175W-200W in our big chassis. Stupidly not fair.

That's a cool idea. Would love to see it implemented more in a desktop-replacement solution.
200$ for an AIO is a bit much tho...
Plus the laptop seems to need diapers whevener you disconnect it. -
Yeah this might be confirmed by Clevo's CES announcements for 2022. If one goes to the landing page at https://www.clevo.com.tw/ces_2022/index.html they will find the PD50/PD70, NP60, and V15/V17 series but nothing yet about a DTR laptop. The products listings themselves haven't been updated though.

Yep, the sad truth. DTR.... you'll be missed.
5 laptop trends from CES 2022 you can't ignore.... Thin, crippled, lightweigted, soldered and in Apple design. What an end for high performance laptops (Mobile Supercomputers) bro @Mr. Fox @jclausius @jc_denton +++
The PC laptop world was focused on large, heavy, and expensive laptops at CES 2022. While AMD, Intel, and Nvidia continue to make silicon focused on thin-and-light systems, the most exciting announcements remain in the realm of high-power, high-performance mobile computing.

Mobile computing has been progressively dumbed down each generation for several years in a row now. Reaching the bottom of the notebook cesspool was inevitable, but still extremely sad. It happened faster than any of us hoped it would. The agenda to eliminate the monsterbooks we love certainly had its origins in the pits of hell. There was a lot left to be desired in the last two partially respectable DTR options that remained, as they were riddled with compromise. Awesomeness is a thing of the past now for laptop jockeys, but opportunities for pretending it still exists are plentiful. On a positive note, the absence of acceptable options in turdbooks should help secondhand monsterbooks hold their market value as long as parts are available to service them.Last edited: Jan 7, 2022Clamibot, Nicolas Paiva, sydneyblue and 1 other person like this.

Well the value thing is doubtful to say the least as the new socket shots the upgradeability in the head in cold blood. However at least there is a faint consolation price in the shape and form of the new Alienware external gpu box, that has thunderbolt 4 connectivity. At least that might create a GPU upgrade path for a few generations, I know its not much but better than nothing.
Also the clevo site says:
Online show from 6th of January to the 19th, so in there is hope for something new on top of what they shown so far. -
Anyone has any ideas/recommendations about the best BGA options after the end of the DTR era?

The upcoming Lenovo Legion Y700 gaming tablet has been teased once again. This time around, Lenovo has demonstrated some of the game enhancements the Legion Y700 can offer thanks to the presence of ZUI 13 software. The 8.8-inch compact Android tablet is expected to feature either a Snapdragon 870 or Snapdragon 888 SoC.

Yep, but does it matter? You can't change the trend. It roll faster and faster for each new year. Worse and worse. And people jump on it blinded by Red, Blue and Green flashy lights all over, thin and slim and paired with good reviews from YouTubers and Tech reviewers on all sorts of weird tech sites (as long the editor like it, it will get the approved stamps - RUN AND BUY).
CES 2022: The Top 5 Trends From the Big Show pcmag.com
It was another mostly digital CES, but there was still plenty to see and learn. These emergent themes will set the technology stage for the next 12 months and beyond.
1. In 2022, Silicon Competition Is Going Mobile
Laptops and desktops are seeing renewed importance in the new work-from-home era, and ARM-based processors like the Apple M1 chips are now serious challengers to a once-sleepy silicon market that Intel pretty much had locked down. The result is a familiar trend, albeit one with renewed importance: Windows laptops launched in 2022 will be more powerful and power-efficient than their predecessors. Intel also used this year’s show to fill out its low-end desktop CPU offerings, which are also members of the 12th Generation family. But mobile chips are the big battleground for the first half of the year.
2. Experimental Laptop Design Took Center Stage
More than two years after the first foldable-screen and dual-screen laptops and phones first went on sale, CES 2022 finally brought some new, intriguing concepts to what has been a rather lethargic corner of the market. Among the most noteworthy announcements at the show are the Asus ZenBook 17 Fold OLED and the Lenovo ThinkBook Plus Gen 3.
The ZenBook 17 Fold is a riff on a foldable laptop-tablet hybrid in its purest form. It uses a unique hinge and a creased display to fold into an ultra-portable, easy-to-carry 12.5-inch device that's smaller than a sheet of A4-sized photocopier paper. Unfolded, it acts as a full-fat 17-inch laptop, whose screen is complete with the inky blacks and brilliant colors we've come to expect from OLED technology.
See also... As both Intel and Apple continue to try and advance the power and efficiency of in-house SoCs, Intel seems to have taken a slight advantage back with its reacquiring of Wilcox. What Wilcox will bring to future SoCs for Intel is yet to be seen, but there is no doubt the knowledge and experience he has with ARM and Apple's M1 will play a part of that

hacktrix2006 Hold My Vodka, I going to kill my GPU
Well I have some fun ahead, Laptop just shutdown and refuses to even power on. Hope a CMOS clear will help. Temps was fine 75c on the CPU and 69.2c on the Hot point of GPU with 62c on GPU core.
Might have been the Obsidian Fan control software not sure as that and the ram are the only changes and its been stable for a while.
Edit: Looks like it was the Fan Control software as i did mess with the Security settings for max fan by lowering the temp threshold guess its time to fine the RTFM part of the software and understand what everything does.

hacktrix2006 Hold My Vodka, I going to kill my GPU
Well i removed the software for now and the system has been fine. Now it could be as i had Clevo's Fan control installed and set on automatic and then Obsidains Fan control set to manual that the EC got confused and just simply shutdown and soft bricked the laptop as the two bits of software was fighting each other.
Or the Emergency Max fan setting in Obsidains software tripped the EC as the Shutdown as like when a system overheats an instant off, then the system wouldn't even post after without clearing the BIOS by removing the CMOS battery.
Will have a look to see if there is a youtube video on the software it might explain to me what does what.Mr. Fox likes this. -

Yeah possibly, you could be getting EC writing conflicts which are never good. -
Yeah it’s not good news for sure but in 3 years and there BGA units fail and have no parts to fix we still will have recourse for our units plus the cost of repairing a BGA I assume is high unless you have solder skills. Plus if the 3080ti drops I will upgrade and sell my 3080 mobile. For me being a gamer ever the 3080 mobile is over kill for 1080p gaming and should serve me forever into the sunset.
