Wow, def woulda bought that, already looking at a delidded 10900k option with the 3080 now since 2080's out, just hoping its not to power throttled. HID seems to be the only seller left that offers it.
-
zTecpc is still offering 2080S models.

Do you mean the outside lid of the screen? That’s metal. But I don’t think it’s painted. Looks more like some kind of dye or something.
-
I do mean that, around the centre, there are a couple of scratches and it being black they are noticeable
-
Ok. I’m looking at mine and I’m thinking that’s definitely some kind of metal dye. That’s not too expensive. You might have to do the whole lid since it might not match if you spot dye it.
-
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
If it's metal you could polish it but you would need to colour it and match the texture. -
Thank you both, eh, tough luck, wonder if I'll find a good colour for it
-
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
It would be easier than trying to match the original.

Clevo X170SM-G and X170KM-G motherboards are starting to pop up on ebay. I guess these models are finally becoming old enough to where spare parts are starting to show up in the aftermarket.

Was the X170KM-G w/ Prema ever updated to support 11th gen CPUs?

I've not seen it but if you have one I'd speak to your reseller.

I don't have am SM or KM, but it's on my radar but if the X170SM has updated 11th gen CPU support, it makes it a potential choice. -
Has anyone had problems with the speakers? Mine started to sound real staticky and then just quit working. Headphones work but are so staticky as to be unusable. Bluetooth speakers and headphones still work fine. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers with no results. Anybody got any ideas or similar experience?

Have you done an EC reset?
-
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
Flushes the BIOS/EC, if you remove power/battery (including CMOS battery). -
I have tried that with no improvement. Next will be to reinstall windows. Thanks for the reply.

Upgradeyourlaptop is eurocoms ebay account. Those boards are uberly over priced.
-
That figures. They overprice everything. These boards should be significantly cheaper.
-
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
Supply and demand impacts the price of course.
-
Special or proprietary HW will always be expensive.

It's just not a cheap time in general for electronics, hopefully things are calming down now.

Indeed. I wonder what new horrors we await with the 3080 Super MXMs

I got some instructions in the end and managed to update the BIOS.
I found a useful page on the McAfee web site on how to create a lightweight UEFI bootable USB stick with a link to the UEFI shell executable included.
https://kc.mcafee.com/corporate/index?page=content&id=KB90801&locale=en_US
Then you can just copy the “ALL” Clevo folder to it and after booting in the BIOS boot manager, you can type:
Fs0:
To change to the USB drive, then
cd ALL
to change to the ALL folder and type
ls
to list the directory. The shell highlights the shell executable type files in green, helpfully.
Then I followed the Clevo instructions:
Step
1 Insert AC adaptor
2 Boot into Shell by USB pen drive
3 Execute ALL\MeSet.efi , system will reboot automatically And into the shell by pen drive again
4 Execute ALL\FLASHME.nsh
5 System will shutdown automatically. Please unplug AC adaptor and plug-in again. Power on by power button.
6 Into BIOS setup meun by press “F2”. Select “Setup Utility”. Press ”F9 ”key to Load Optimal Defaults and press YES Press ”F10 ”key to Exit Saving Changes and press Yes System will reboot again.

Hey guys, I bought a Clevo X170SM-G from zTecpc earlier this week. I ordered it with minimum specs, except on the GPU side (I got an RTX 2080) since it was cheaper for me to get aftermarket parts and swap the original ones out than to spec it out at the shop.
I'm currently eyeing some Crucial Ballistix RAM: https://www.amazon.com/Crucial-Ballistix-Laptop-Gaming-BL2K16G32C16S4B/dp/B083W5ZRJ1?th=1
I'm thinking this is the best I can put in this laptop. Does anyone know what memory modules are compatible with the X170? Is this kit compatible?
One more question, if it is compatible, is this the best RAM I can put in this laptop? I'm thinking it is, but if anyone knows of any SODIMMs that clock higher than 3200MHz and/or have a lower CL than 16, I'd appreciate it if anyone could tell me what they are.
Edit: I did a bit more research, and Crucial says themselves that this kit is compatible with the SM-G and KM-G. -
I’ve been using Kingston hyper x in mine. https://shop.kingston.com/products/hyperx-impact-ddr4-laptop-memory?variant=39387672543424
Right now my machine is being serviced by zTecpc. Trying to figure out why it crashes so much. Think it’s unlikely it’s my RAM but we’ll see what they say.Clamibot likes this. -
Ok, so a while back I posted about audio issues. I noticed someone else was having a similar issue with it going crackly and then eventually cutting out. Didn't matter if it were speakers, headphones or an external DAC.
I FINALLY fixed it this week after reinstalling windows, changing thermal paste, trying the washer mod with the spring-loaded screws, etc.
The exhaust vents were blocked! From the exterior of the laptop, they looked fine. Once I took the heatsink assembly off and checked the actual heatsink behind the fan, it was completely blocked solid on the CPU side, and part-blocked on the GPU side.
Cleaned that out, put new kryonaught on the GPU and CPU, put the washer mod back and reassembled.
Temps aren't great on a Prime95 or AIDA64 stress test (90-95C with 5ghz all core on a 10700K), but FANTASTIC for general usage (50-60C while gaming, 80-85C while rendering video @5Ghz).
So if you're having audio issues, absolutely check your vents!
Oh, and this is for Mr Fox...
I got the "standard" driver package off the nvidia website. For whatever reason, non-DCH drivers WILL NOT install on this laptop for me. It just says it's not supported.
But they work fine on my desktop (finally got a 2080ti for it).Last edited: Jul 16, 2021 -
I recently had audio issues with my Clevo X170SM-G. Audio got crackly and then quit working for speakers. Headphone port still worked but was so bad it was unusable. I finally got it working again after completely uninstalling the realtek drivers and rebooting before reinstalling them. I replaced the 256 gb drive that came in the laptop originally when I first bought it and put it aside so I put it back in and booted to the original OS and it worked fine. I knew then it was a driver problem so it was just a matter of getting the drivers to work. I will remember about the vents if I have further problems.

Compressed air from both directions usually does the trick for dust. Just hold the fans still. -
Normally I agree, but this was actually compacted on.
Had to bust out the IPA 99.5% and toothbrush to scrub them clean.

Hy,
I wanted to buy it Clevo SM-G my machine, but Kingston was the selected one after the reading of the many negative opinions and is going perfectly with it (4x16GB DDR4-3200MHz CL20)

Recently, I've had a couple of instances with my X170SM-G laptop losing control of its fans.
It works for a time (like days powered on) on automatic speed control and then suddenly will stop and the fans just run at some slow default speed and the machine cooks, luckily thermally throttling to stop it burning up. If I press Fn+1 toggle, the display pops up the message to say the fans will run at maximum or automatic alternately but the actual fan speed does not change at all. A reboot does not help but a shut down and restart clears the problem and the fan control resumes as normal. It's done it twice now.
Anyone else seen this? -
Obsidian program writes interesting things at me (after a time) and is when the system is restart puts it right. Otherwise with the machine it's okay!
-
Honestly? Being a smoker probably doesnt help..
In other news, it's REALLY hot here in the UK. Still running 45C/65C on the GPU/CPU while gaming. Admittedly I cheat and just whack the fans on max, but it's still running well. Editing videos tops out around 85C.
So i'm pretty happy. I did lower the all-core turbo a little as it was slightly unstable, but 4.9ghz seems fine.Last edited: Jul 21, 2021 -

Oh smoke tar is a great way of gumming up anything, yeah if you smoke it needs to be disassembled every 6 months or so to keep best operation.
-
Yep, so I need to do that more often. I haven't done a full teardown since I bought it in August last year.
So I think i'll do it again around December/January. Maybe i'll give it a deep clean as a christmas present.
-
Well I feel silly. So my machine was being unstable because the 32GB 3200mhz kit I installed needed to be installed in the two slots under the keyboard. I didn't do that and had them in the one under the bottom panel. Apparently anything 2666mhz or less you can put them where I have them installed. Which would make sense since my corsair kit is 2666mhz. They'll be sending my unit back soon.
Papusan, electrosoft and Clamibot like this. -
Wait what? High speed RAM only works properly in the slots underneath the keyboard?
Thanks for the heads up. I haven't gotten my laptop yet, but I ordered a 32GB 3200MHz Crucial Ballistix kit to install in it. I normally install RAM underneath the bottom panel rather than underneath the keyboard because of easy access. You have just saved me a big headache. -
-
Quick question, is it possible to disable CPU cores in the Premamod BIOS?
The reason I ask is so I can effectively turn my CPU into a quad core CPU when I feel like playing older games or laggy, unoptimized Ubisoft games. This way, I can boost the clock speed super high to get good performance in these games.
