Does anyone know of any glossy 144Hz panels that are compatible with this laptop? I absolutely hate matte screens.

Each display usually has a glossy and matte version, so if you check your model number around that will be a glossy one often. It's just a layer they put on it after all for matte.

My X170SM-G is finally arriving on thursday.
I'm thinking of buying a Rockitcool full copper IHS for the 10900K I bought. Will it fit in this system? I'm thinking it should but I'd like to confirm first.
Also, do I need to put anything in the order notes on their site? -
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
Have you delidded your chip already? The original IHS is also full copper (with nickel plating) so it's more about shape than material.
-
The CPU came pre-delidded, as in the seller took the lid off, did not clean off the solder, and then gave me a generic lid that doesn't look like it'll even work properly. That's not what delidded is supposed to mean.
Thus I'd like to get an IHS that's meant for the 10900K. Mr. Fox already let me know that zTecpc uses the Rockitcool IHSes if you ask them to delid the CPU for you, so I already got a confirmation that it'll fit perfectly. I can't return this CPU since we're way past the return window now. I should've waited to buy it until my order was confirmed to be shipped. Oh well, I can make it work, plus every little addition to cooling performance helps for those super high overclocks.
Thanks for your reply though! I already went ahead and ordered that IHS.Terreos, electrosoft and Papusan like this. -

In that case yes that's a great option for an IHS.

Hi guys! Can you upgrade from Win 10 to Win 11 on your X170SM-G without a complete fresh installation? For my Win 10 setup, I followed tutorials from @S.K , for example, to remove unnecessary parts from the CCC and to stop automatic Win 10 updates. If possible, it would be great if I do not have to re-do everything from scratch for the Win11 installation.
-
You will probably have to redo everything for a Windows 11 installation. S.K. has released a debloated version of Windows 11 here: http://forum.notebookreview.com/thr...y-auto-updates-defender-pre-activated.836857/
Using the standard Windows 11 installer or performing an upgrade will just reintroduce all the crap you're trying to get rid of. -
On top of that, I really like this software:
https://www.majorgeeks.com/files/details/wu10man.html
Install it as a control interface and disable all update services using this software. What it does is, it removes the services physically that are required for running "Windows Update Medic Service" and other Microsoft malware in the background without user consent. When you want to perform an update, you can use this software to temporarily enable Windows updates only and perform updates (or hide any update via windows update hide tool; I use it to hide any newer win11 release updates and driver updates as well as all other "updates" that are not related to Defender and virus definitions). Microsoft never respects the registry tweaks and group policy settings when it comes to installing new malware in your machine. It works flawlessly on Windows 11 too btw. Here are some screenshots:

Plus the detail on each patch and what it actually does gets less and less even in the enterprise space.

After 3 months of waiting, my X170SM-G finally arrived today!

What kit do you have? I tried this and it worked at first, but the RAM wasn't running at 3200 MHz. It was running at 2666 MHz instead.
I went into the BIOS to enable the XMP profile, and now I just get a black screen. My laptop came with an 8 GB stick running at 3200 MHz, and it was installed in one of the slots under the bottom panel. I think I'll try doing this after lunch. -
Hyper x 3200mhz
I’ll have to double check what slots they were in. ZTecpc had one under the keyboard and one under the bottom panel. It was bizarre. -
I have 4 x 32GB Kingston HyperX modules (total 128 GB) running flawlessly at 3467 MHz. However, I have the custom @Prema firmware installed and I had to go through multiple kits with back and forth warranty claims after many hours of MemTest86 tests / crashes to be able to achieve that. Also, you might have to run a little bit higher memory voltage in case your particular modules are not stable at stock voltages.

Well I went ahead and installed my 32 GB Crucial Ballistix 3200 MHz kit in the slots underneath the bottom panel, and it works great!
I guess my motherboard is different, but whatever. It works, and that's all that matters. I prefer the memory modules being in these slots anyway since they're easier to access. I don't like taking the keyboard off since I feel like I'm going to break it every time I do that.
Intel XTU is still reporting my Max Core Speed as -0.8 GHz. Does anyone know how to resolve that? I've never seen this happen with an unlocked CPU before, only locked ones.Terreos likes this. -
Well I think I found a solution.
Running Throttlestop after firing up Intel XTU somehow corrects the readings in XTU. The core frequency shows up correctly now.
Once I close Throttlestop, the readings on XTU remain correct for about 1 minute before the core frequency goes back to -0.8 GHz.
I thought both these programs read the same sensors and loaded the same software modules. Is this correct?Terreos likes this. -

Maybe fire up other programs to see if the same happen in XTU. Tried set power plan to high performance in windows to see if its stop the drop?Clamibot likes this.
-
Man we are all over the place with our machines aren’t we?
-
Yes I did. I got the same result regardless of power plan or XTU version. XTU would keep reporting my CPU clock speed as -0.8 GHz unless I fired up Throttlestop.
My guess is that there's a driver I need to update somewhere. Throttlestop must be activating something such that XTU starts returning correct readings. -
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
XTU can get s bit confused. Have you got anything else polling the system?
Papusan likes this. -
I do not. The only program I have polling the system when XTU is returning wrong readings is XTU itself. However, it only returns wrong readings for core frequency and voltage. Everything else is correct.
Opening up Throttlestop makes XTU report the correct core frequency. The voltage is still wrong though. I'm guessing XTU isn't reading the voltage directly from the core. All readings are correct in Throttlestop.
All readings are also correct in HwInfo64. -
Dude, everything about this laptop is amazing.
The soundcard is already really good to begin with. Some tuning with Equalizer APO yields amazing results both with the speakers and external audio devices. -

It was definitely the best sounding laptop I ever owned. Definitely missing it a bit for that reason. lol. Such a bizarre reason to miss a laptop, but so many of these manufactures just don't pay attention to the quality of their speakers.
Glad you're enjoying it just as I'm leaving the DTR club.Clamibot likes this. -
The CPU overclocking function has just vanished on my Control center. And when i try to start the stand-alone CPU overclocking app i get this message. Any ideas what's going on ?
-
The module probably screwed itself up somehow. Try reinstalling Clevo Control Center.
If that doesn't work, reinstall Intel XTU if you have that on your system. -
Done that before making this post. Nothing seems to work.

Someone is selling a good specced Clevo X170SM-G from Eluktronics, so that means you'll get the Premamod BIOS in this machine: https://www.ebay.com/itm/255171657822?hash=item3b696a805e:g:L74AAOSwNyFhYkSV
If anyone is looking for an X170SM-G with Premamod, get this while you can!Terreos likes this. -
When you buy this machine, you are not supposed to rely on the crap that comes bundled with the machine. Switch to ThrottleStop for all your OC needs or Intel XTU for that matter. But first, get rid of the garbage CCC installation and re-do it in a clean way as explained in my guide below. It will save you from a lot of headache and wasted time.

AFAIK, on P870 CCC also limits max fan speed for whatever reason. Only way to get true 100% is to delete it and do a full bios reset.
Papusan likes this. -
It isn't the case anymore with this machine. The fan control app works well. It's the other CPU and GPU OC crap that is the problem, however it can be worked around as I've laid out step wise in the tutorial.

Hey all,
It's seems things change with the x170. I bought one from Xotic PC i9 11900k , 3080 and now after the fact I learned about the BIOS issue stock. The question I have is if I don't overclock and just use as a render and productivity machine is it stable? or should I try to update the BIOS to a Prema? is that even possible currently?
Thanks for any advice all!! -
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
It should always be stable stock, if not talk to your reseller.
-
Thanks!!
-

No problem, these modified bios files are for tweakers.
-
Good to know. Excited to get the beast and put it through its paces..
-
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
The waiting for it is always the hardest part
-
True very true.. lol
-
In my opinion, the hardest part is to find the perfect combination of memory sticks that can run at a sustained overclock without giving memtest errors.
-
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
Nah, that's just the cherry on top
-
Are you allowed here to ask if anyone is interested in something for purchase ? ( in my case, 64 gb of ram for this laptop )
-
Definitely make an appropriate thread in the market place. If you’re looking to buy then make a “Want to Buy” post. Or if you’re selling then “Computer Components”.
I usually put a link in my signature to any marketplace thread I have currently to help spread the word I’m looking to buy or sell. -

Definitely the best place for it

Released Windows 11 Pro (21H2) build 22000.348, the same one that was officially released on MS website. With the usual modifications.

Yeah I got the registry edit for the full context menu pretty quickly when I moved to 11.

Recently, my machine has developed a very annoying but benign flaw. There are certain keys on the keyboard which have their backlight permanently lit and the color is always red. No matter what I do, they just don't turn off. If I turn on the rainbow effect, the keys turn off when they are supposed to which indicates that it could be a dangling ground somewhere in the keyboard itself although this is my guess. I have cleaned and reseated all the keyboard ribbon connectors but to no effect. They keys work fine when typing though and there is no functional problem with the keyboard. I am considering filing a warranty claim for the keyboard. Anyone else had this issue thus far with their machines?
-
I haven't encountered this, but my guess is that it's a firmware setting issue. My understanding is that the lighting settings are saved to the BIOS, so perhaps an NVRAM reset would solve this issue for you.
