I'd still go for a high refresh rate lower resolution display myself for longevity.

Normally I’d feel the same way. After experiencing 240hz panels it would be hard not to notice. But, I’m very big on G-sync. And that would help a lot as screen tearing is a lot more noticeable and frustrating me than anything else. Plus I play a lot of older or adventure style games. So no Apex, CS:GO, or Overwatch for me. So high FPS really isn’t needed. Though I will admit it is really nice to have buttery smooth game play at 200hz and up.

Fair enough if you are sensitive to screen tearing.

What type of stuff does everyone want to see on this.
I'm sure 3DMark results, game benchmarks (which ones?), BIOS screens, speakers, cooling performance, performance in general are some I can think of -

3 and 6 foot drop tests. And can it blend? -
All the above. Fire strike scores are what I refer to normally so definitely that. And I have no idea what games you got, but anything demanding. This thing has too much horsepower to be wasting it’s time benchmarking Overwatch and such.
In addition a very nice inside tour of the machine. Just so we can get a clear view of all the expansion slots and such.
If you still have the Area 51m when you get this I’d appreciate a speaker comparison. The X170 boosts really good speakers. Would like to know if it just has loud speakers or if it has real potential to be used while gaming.
Oh and keyboard. Talk about the feel and how bright the leds are. Seem all to common to have very dim back lighting on keyboards these days.

Logically a P570WM>P870DM>P870DM3>Area-51m path would say X170 next but idk if I am going forward or backwards over the years LOL

Speakers will be pitted against M18xR2, Area-51m, and MSI GT73VR.
Keyboard and mouse standard tests. I hope to improve upon my m15 R2 review. I will be reviewing a ASUS laptop soon. I'll post that video when it's out and ask y'all for improvements for the X170.
Well, I was only able to get a measly 5.0Ghz on P870DM with 7700K and 5.3Ghz (5.0 Ghz 24/7 stable on Area-51m) with 9900K so we will see.

I'll literally sell all my laptops right now to buy this beast if it's that good.

Glad to see someone else that can appreciate good laptop speakers. I miss the front firing speakers Alienware’s used to have. Only Razer seems to care about having speakers that don’t fire downward and actually have some volume. Too bad besides the Blade 14 I had every Razer I’ve touched has cut me. Pun intended.

Front firing speakers doesn’t make the big magic when the engineers hate spend money on a sub. Amazing that they couldn’t put it in their 17 inch gaming flagship. Cost savings can sometimes blind them totally doing it correctly from the beginning.jc_denton likes this.

How much better is GT83VR vs GT73VR sound?
The GT73VR has really good sound, but after tuning, it beats my M18xR2 in terms of bass only. My M18xR2 is slightly louder and has good balanced sound.
Area-51m is good but lacks bass, it's louder than them all.
P870DM/DM3 series has loudest of them all and has bass under or around M18xR2.
If I were to rate as "overall":
P870DMx
M18xR2
GT73VR
Area-51m
In terms of bass:
GT73VR
M18xR2
P870DMx
Area-51m
In terms of loudness:
P870DMx
Area-51m
M18xR2
GT73VR
IMO, keeping in mind they all have really good sound except the Area-51m lacks bass which kills it.
My Area-51m has front firing speakers, I'm assuming you are referring to the BGA models?
Area-51m lacks subwoofer though so no bass. Wonder if I can add in a sub and replace HDD slot...LOL -
DaMafiaGamer Switching laptops forever!
To give you an example a GT72 subwoofer is probably 2/3 the power of a GT83 sub. What the GT83 sub is good at is low range, this is complemented by two woofers at the top too, if you disconnected the sub you’d still get decent bass. Basically the 5.1 audio setup is what makes it sound amazing. Bass can go to about the 40hz range easily due to the massive space allocated to the gt83vr sub, not to mention cripple free audio drivers. It sounds like a 3 - 4 inch sub when maxed out although a p870dm-g would beat it in terms of loudness.
I’d rate it like so out of all my laptops:
Overall:
MSI GT83VR
MacBook Pro 16
Clevo P870 series - my KM sounded worse than the DM I had, no idea why...
Alienware 18 and M18 X2 (dell crippled some of the low range frequencies, with the normal windows driver it sounds amazing)
MSI GT72VR (amazing surround sound quality but the mids and highs are washed out by a lot of bass
)
Alienware Area 51m (Sounds worse than my iPhone XS Max in terms of bass... actually in terms of everything, the iPhone gets louder too ROFL. How the hell did dell achieve this who knows...
)
In terms of sheer power (loudness):
Clevo P870 series - these laptops will make your ears bleed at 100% volume believe me.
GT83VR - Nice overall balance the high end isn’t crazy loud like the P870 sounds like a more powerful setup tuned for most people’s ears...
GT72 - Loud but unfortunately not as loud as the other two, also has some annoying chassis rattling at high volume
MacBook Pro 16 - Loud but there is some kind of volume limiter in place, like it gets loud then quiet again almost like some speaker protection is put in place. It still sounds amazing though.
Alienware 18 and M18x R2 - These laptops are loud but I expected louder to be honest, at least the sound is balanced...
Alienware 51M - TrashLast edited: Jun 17, 2020 -
I forgot about the Macbook pro 16! I would put it right on top of M18xR2.
Interesting, I will have to look up GT83VR sub on eBay and see if I can transplant it later....hehe
Regarding your KM, I know my DM sounded good, DM3 even better. I am assuming they switched chipset or software to make it worse.
Regarding AW18/M18x series...Dell crippled AW18 bass for sure.
M18x however, what you need to do is turn off the Recon 3Di bass and use equalizer instead. It makes a huge difference.Papusan and DaMafiaGamer like this. -

Yeah bro, just make sure you have enough space for it, it is a decently sized sub, also get the newer version not the older one without the cone thingy in the middle...
I compared it against the GT70 sub and they were neck and neck in certain frequencies but the lower the range got it was clear the GT83 sub was better. It sounded like a car sub at low volume lol. Dynaudio knows a thing or two about this, they do make a lot of German cars stereo systems...ssj92 likes this. -

Hey guys, new update
Clevo has pushed back the release date to first week of July. Apparently they aren’t happy with the cooling of the test units, especially the CPU part, so they are the doing the cooling.
weight is expected to increase from 3.8kg to 4.5kg, so expect more copper(?), maybe fully covered cooling plates(?), maybe even better fans with metal blades, anything might happen. Will update if I have any new news. -
DaMafiaGamer Switching laptops forever!
Probably implementing a better vapour chamber, this is good news
joluke, jclausius, electrosoft and 3 others like this. -
Adding 0.7kg of extra goodness is nice.
They probably found out that having boosted 10 cores, paired with simple copper block and long heatpipes results in a temp spike for the CPU, from the delay in capillary action. And as the GPU vapor chamber becomes saturated it only gets worse for the CPU.
Ideally they go for dual interconnected vapor chambers this time around like we urged them to. The 56x56x3mm vapor chamber works wonders for quickly spreading heat in two dimensions and should help temps from spiking into tjmax, due to their design choice for the heatsink.joluke, Terreos, electrosoft and 4 others like this. -
First week of July? I heard late July/Early August.
I am glad Clevo pushing it back to improve cooling, would have been nice if they could also get some Mini LED displays too.jclausius, Terreos, jc_denton and 1 other person like this. -

really? i ordered from origin pc so mine is goin to be delayed? -
Yes, Origin PC will get it probably after or around same time as Sager. As far as I know, no one has it yet, besides @Zunexxx
Do you have any info on the Mini LED display?
I will probably wait til 11th gen Intel/RTX 3000 series to finalize one for myself, probably Mini LED display will be ready by then too -
MiniLED you say? Haha. Do have some of these panels in hand now. I am trying to find a driver to make a portable display out of it.

There are tweaks for portable ones to make the battery last a decent amount of time usually.
-
Is it normal for new releases to have critical hardware changes the same month the systems are to be shipped? As in this case the thermal design? Does it not take a good amount of time to test these things in new laptops?

Remember Intel had to (forced to) delay the release of Comet lake desktop chips (one of the reasons was all the talk about high power consumption).

This is true. But I’ve never had a good experience with downward firing speakers. I’ve some loud ones, but they’re never as good as front firing you up ward firing speakers. Ever. Granted I’ll where headphones when I game if I must. But everything else I want good speakers.
Yeah the M15 and M17 series Alienware laptops are downward firing. The last gen thick boys still had front firing and sounded a lot better. I don’t think they had a sub?
I’d be ok if they dropped the HDD for a sub. Then again I would expect a third m.2 slot if they did. No desktop replacement should only have two storage slots.

And no desktop replacement should have same amount usb ports as a couple of year old Applebook.alaskajoel, Ashtrix, Terreos and 2 others like this.

i wouldn’t say it’s common, but when the competition is doing so well, I bet Clevo wants to take back crown of the best cooling DTR. I have test results of the new AW51m, and the figures are actually a little better than the X170SM-G, so I think Clevo is trying harder to improve the cooling, and I do believe there are a lot of room for improvements.
-
Tested it different ways? Cpu only or/and Cpu and Gpu in full load? What of those did you compare with? Hotter Cpu or Gpu? Or both?
-
-
Well the X170 is looking like it understands that a bit more doesn’t it?
-
We will never see a beauty like this anymore... One of its kind.
High performance paired with beauty, good sound, enough of all ports and reliable. And the cherry on top was @Prema Mod firmware. An unbeatable combination.

I was veeeeery tempted to buy that model when it first came out. Very clean design. And I think that was when the 900 series was as powerful in the laptop as it was on desktop? Man we don’t get that anymore.

At the same time we saw the P870 popped out with 200w desktop cards, Dell was out for the first time in history with its new AW flagship with soldered hardware and no raid support. Of course paired with the well known 180w psu and battery boost.
Yeah, too skinny ain’t nice

Looking at it on my stand you just see the upper part which looks like a normal beefy laptop, then you realise that's just a lip and there is another laptop thickness below that.
jclausius, Papusan, 1610ftw and 1 other person like this. -
hotter cpu, it was tested using the 10700k and the 10700k would run at a higher wattage before hitting thermal throttle compared to the X170SM-G I posted earlier. The difference was about 15w.
P.S Even at thermal throttle, it maintained about 4-4.4ghz.
