Heck some of us only have the 144hz model.

Still hoping to find a qhd 165hz panel to swap in. Figure that’s the sweet spot. Unless you play CS GO competitively not much reason for more.

And can you utilize every hz in new games with the fantastic RT feature from Ngreedia? :D Even 3090 struggle to get the half in games with the correct and tasty settings in 4K, LOOL

Pretty darn close with my desktop if I go high instead of very high actually. Once you hit 4K you don’t really need all the eye candy turned on. :)

I will never get a 240 Hz panel because that will ruin gaming for me. I'm already struggling to get 120 fps on my Ranger in my newer games, which is really pissing me off. As a result, I'll be getting a Clevo DTR at the end of the year (most likely the second revision of the X170 with an Alder Lake CPU if it's out by that time).

High framerates are awesome, but I'm not spoiling myself any more than this. I'm sticking to 120 Hz or 144 Hz screens. Maybe in the future when we have monster supercomputers available to all of us, I will get a 240 Hz panel.

You know what I can understand that. When ever I got a new monitor for my desktop it would always be a spec bump in resolution and fps. First was 3440x1440 100hz. Now it’s 4K 120hz. And to fully take advantage of the new monitors I would have to turn settings down. Which I’m fine with honestly. But, it’s still a bit demoralizing because you want to get the most out of your investment, but you have to make some sacrifices to get there. Atleast in my case just adding more gpu horse power solves that. High fps could be either the cpu or gpu. Not as straight forward of a fix if it’s the latter on a laptop.

I used a Samsung 120hz 49 inch 1440p monitor gonna up grade soon to 240 yet I doubt the 3080 when available will be able to handle it.

I won’t lie I loved 240hz with the short time I’ve had to mess with it. But without doing blind tests I can’t tell if it was just my brain playing tricks on me or if I could even feel the difference. I say feel because even at high FPS I can SEE when the FPS takes a 10 FPS or more dip. But I do swear I can feel a difference in response. Most likely in my head as 144hz on the x170 has been just peachy for me so far. Though it’s a lot easier to lock a steady 144 refresh rate than it would be to do 240. Though the number junky in me likes seeing big numbers. . .so still envious of your 240hz. ;) :D

You should play fft for ps1 but the modded one version 1.3 with hard difficulty omg that is a great version of fft. All you need is a iso and the patch. Patch the iso and play on a emulator you can thank me later.

Not sure if anyone shared this yet or not. You can ignore the 3080 scores as they are an 80-90w part. The 3070 is a 140w part. Pretty darn close to the DTR 2080 200w. Can’t say the 3080 would be much faster at 150w. So if for some odd reason we don’t see 200w MXM cards then we won’t see any improvements in games. But I’m still hopeful as another 60w would push the 3070 over a 2080S. I’ll try to not get excited until it happens though. :D

That would be wise. Not likely to happen, and being pleasantly surprised is easier and better than being disappointed. Sometimes it's nice to be wrong, but when nice doesn't happen you can at least have the satisfaction of knowing what your common sense and average powers of observations suggested what you suspected would occur, did occur. Being right even when you wish you were not is better than a poke in the eye with a sharp stick.

Always easier said than done. ;) Still I have an easy enough time maxing out my fps in most titles with a few tweaks here and there that it’s not a big deal either way honestly. Just once I can reliably get my hands on a qhd high refresh rate panel from a reliable source will be the true test.

So you get all the performance in rasterisation and better raytracing support at much lower power levels.

Indeed the performance increases at a lower power level are quite impressive IF you are into that kind of laptop. If you are both willing and able to put up with a bigger and more powerful chassis it would be nice if there was some choice, too. It is getting very lonely up there at pinnacle of performance.

As for the upcoming MXM cards I would not be surprised if the "official" 150W for the 3080 mobile version are there to make room at the top for a 3080TI mobile.

I know the hot topic is GPU's. For me, that is not a big deal right now, I am am interested in 256GB 4x64GB DDR4 SO-DIMM kits though...... I mean 128gb is good, can' really complain, but there are 256gb kits for full size or desktop dimms and the spec is there for so dimms so when will we see them?

I would probably get more out of the laptop with more ram than a gpu upgrade in my case.

That’s the majority market making things harder for us. I’m fully expecting it to end one day. What I hope happens by then is egpu enclosures get caught up that you’d be hard pressed to tell the difference between a desktop and an egpu.

I really hope that’s not the case. I’d rather not have to spend another couple grand to upgrade this thing. :D

As long as I can still get laptops with overclockable desktop CPUs and eGPU performance is at parity with desktops, I'll be happy. The eGPU should be able to directly drive the laptop display as well. I don't want the iGPU acting as a middleman and destroying performance, and I don't want to use an external display either.

Realistically, we're plugged into a wall outlet while gaming with a dedicated GPU anyway. Having an eGPU would not be a hassle since chances are, we'll be sitting at a desk or table anyway. Gaming on the iGPU is a better choice when on battery power since you'll get better runtime.

No matter which scenario you look at the upgrades never end and you know it :D

It would be great if egpu solutions would catch up as with current power consumption for both CPU and GPU it is rather unlikely we will see laptops that are able to keep up with desktops for both GPU and CPU.

Absolutely this. And maybe with the likes of the Asus ROG x13 Flow we may see more of that down the road. But that solution looks like the egpu is not upgradeable. So I’d like to see a larger version. Where you can swap in your own card. I’d make the sacrifice of having a proprietary port like that if it delivers on performance.

You mean you don’t play games while doing hand stands on the back of an elephant? Strange. . .

You hush now. Or @Donald@zTecpc is gonna come for more of my money. :D

Thunderbolt 4 was such a let down. I don’t know why they even called it that. It’s more like thunderbolt 3 v2. Performance wise it really doesn’t help too much. It does help with the 1% lows which is great. But if I want to slap a 3090 in an egpu I don’t want 3070 performance. One day. . .one day. . .

Which brings us back to solutions that actually work and the X170 that really should get a nice 3080TI mobile to fulfill its potential. Hopefully the rumors are true.

Hey, we had one post with a rumor in this thread, what more proof do you need :D

That high quality proof aside I am not sure what the name would be but as the gap between the desktop and mobile cards is so big I can see how it would look like a good idea to release something that is as powerful as the 3080 desktop with the desktop 3080TI and 3090 still being above what we can do in a laptop. Maybe they could even call it 3080 Super and this time offer a real performance increase ;)

A really powerful mobile option might also cause other manufacturers to release at least one big flagship gaming laptop. We used to have big laptops from MSI, Asus, Acer and HP before everybody except Clevo and Alienware dumbed down their offerings to go 100% slim and soldered.

Fair point. And I’d be happy to be wrong. But my skepticism comes from a few things.

One the 3070-3080 80w-90w gpus are literally neck and neck in game tests. Like there is no reason to get a laptop 3080. Now the 140w 3070 is pretty close to the 200w 2080. So the 150w 3080 might be about 2080 S level. As of now we still don’t know if there will be 200w versions. But if their is then we will have some good cards to upgrade too. But the 3080 would still be lacking compared to its desktop counter part.

So a 3080 Ti maybe them trying there best to make a card that matches the 3080 in a laptop. Which if they pull off I would be all for. ;)

I really don’t like how Dave2D seems to think adding more wattage to a 3080 would have dimensioning returns. Don’t think he’s aware how much a desktop version pulls.

That being said I know someone getting one of these. So I can kindly ask them when they get it for some comparisons. CPU is gonna be interesting to see. GPU I can’t see this being any better than our 200W 2080S.

He is right in a way because the 3080 mobile is based on the 3070 gpu die but it’s the full GA104 die, not cut down. It’s just being limited by tdp. I reckon above 150w you’ll have diminished returns not like the 130-140w he mentioned. I say this messing with tdps in the past. The only recent mobile architecture I’ve seen that can fully utilise the tdp given to it is pascal. Speaking of the 1060, 1070 of course with the tdp unlocked. Upping the tdp on the 150w 2080 to 200w lead to what 1-5fps gain? Yes benchmarks are better, this is because the gpu can boost higher, this doesn’t always translate to games. Nvidia have put so many performance limitations in place that adding more tdp is useless nowadays unless you own a desktop card with a truely unlocked vbios, @Mr. Fox would know about this with his beefy RTX 2080 Ti setup. :D

That’s so bizarre because I know upping from the 80-90w laptops they saw nice improvements to fps with more watts. Hence why I thought Eluktronics was ahead of the pack with their max lineup. Cooling was a bit lacking but the numbers didn’t lie. So it just floors me that 150w is the sweet spot this time around. And to be honest I can’t say I compared a 150w 2080 super to a 200w version. I do know I get respectable boast in games when I do run mine overclocked. So I can imagine that might be the difference. How much? Not sure I’ll have to look into it. But I did see exactly what you were talking about when I watched my first 140w 3070 video. Basically next and next performance in games to a 200w 2080.

Guess DTR’s are going the way of the dodo faster than I was hoping.

That's an odd way of reading it. More like its making most of the abilities of any chassis depending on what the user needs.

The only big chip we got was the 480m which was cut down so far it made no sense.

Would be shame, then, if the 3080M in the X170KM-G is anything less than 200W, as it would not be making the most of the abilities of this chassis.

I expect it depends on how hot Rocket will run and the higher PCI-e 4.0 power consumption (increased heat). Clevo have now the golden chance to provide slightly better cooling for the Cpu at expense of offering Amp 3080 GPU with lower TGP vs its predecessor. Unified Heatsink design at its best :D Many ways to improve the Cpu cooling, LOOL

1080 → castrated 2080@150w then back to 200W Super cards. Could 3080 be = equal 2080 with crippled TGP? → Yeah. Then back to 200W cards after Amber lake is out (if socketed hardware is still a thing). Everything is possible if you look at the history.

Yeah the fully enabled smaller chip was a lot faster.

Ive just spend most of the day on and off reading this entire thread.
And im still no closer on deciding if i just get the 2080S version now or wait until late march for the 3080 option.
Im even more confused this evening then when i woke up this morning.

One thing for sure is You'll get more FPS and better second hand value when you later think about sell models with newer cards. See it this way... Would you buy a used laptop with 1080 or 2080 cards?

As someone that has a tricked out X170 my advice is wait. If the 3080 ends up being a dud you would be able to get the 2080 Super at a discount by that time. Once we know how powerful the mxm cards are is when we can give a full recommendation or not.

The 2080 Super is pretty darn powerful though. But you’d probably feel silly if you got it and the 3080 model was faster.
