Liquid metal make better bound with the IHS and Die if you apply it on both surfaces. Aka it will stick better on both surfaces. You all know you sometimes have to struggle a bit to make the liquid metal stick to the die (different brands LM isn't equal easy to get it to stick - even within same brand). Then you can think how it will be for nickel plated IHS without any coat of LM. Put it on both surfaces make it foolproof.

So it looks like i'm joining the x170 defective club. I was playing some games and I got three hard locks. The first one I got when I switched games and the system just hard locked on me and rebooted. I rebooted and tried playing with any overclocks on my GPU. Same issue. Booted into the Bios and made sure to load Optimal defaults. This time it seemed to fix the issue, but it did lock after a few minutes. But, this time the keyboard stopped working and then the laptop hard locked again. But this time the screen just went black and I had to pull the battery to shut it off. I'm reaching out to Donald to see who I'd contact at ZTecPc because something is definitely wrong. Not what you want happening to a $4k investment only a few months after buying.
-
To me it sounds like a bad hard drive (m.2) try a different m.2 drive with windows on it and remove all other extras. You'll find that it's a bad drive (I had the same issue)Terreos likes this.

That's easy enough. I upgraded to an evo 1tb so I'll swap the original drive in.
-
-
I’m really gonna be sad if that’s what happened. It was past midnight when i posted so I went to bed. So I’m starting fresh today. Gotta find my original m.2 and see if my drive is dying.
-
Of course I can't seem to fiind the original M.2. So grabbing another from BestBuy. Watch as soon as I get this swapped out I'll find it.
Glad I bought that back up usb from ZTecpc.

I'm going to be remembering all these keyboard combinations in case I ever have to use them. Why is there no documentation on any of this stuff? It's super useful!
Which version of Windows did this happen on? Let me guess, it was the Home edition.
Man am I glad I made the switch to LTSC 2 years ago.Terreos likes this. -
Hold off on the champene it seems like it did not work. So on to putting the new drive in.
-
I’m not celebrating just yet, but I’m currently been playing video games for about half an hour with no lock ups. So it looks like my old evo ssd was dying. Gotta pull some stuff off it later and I sent an email to Samsung to get a warranty claim and get a new one. So forced upgrade it seems. I’ll probably run these drives in raid 0 once I get the replacement.
So where can I send your cookies as thanks?

IDK about that, I was looking for a DTR and went with the X170, had I known that custom bios was going to be such a touchy topic and pain in the rear then I would have avoided everyone that sells rebranded clevo laptops so this might be the first and last clevo I get until vendors stop being (insert what ever you want here).
It even crossed my mind about returning it to Eurocom, but I would not buy one from any of the partners at that point and get something else. -

You can still get a lot out of the standard bios.
-
Why not just return it and get the laptop from a Prema partner shop instead? You'll get a superior machine.
You can even get one from zTecpc and get it with the special thermal mods for enhanced cooling performance. I get that the fact not all X170s come with an awesome BIOS is a sore topic, but I'm not sure how that warrants boycotting the partner shops you can get the laptop from in a souped up state. -
Too many people having this issue. I'm almost positive it is a Windoze OS X problem and not a hardware problem.electrosoft, JCordero31 and Terreos like this.

Cause its not worth the headache. I already have discussed this with a number of friends looking at clevo laptops and they are less than impressed with the bios situation so they are forgoing clevo laptops and looking at other vendors so the damage is already done. One of them was ready to buy this week, not anymore. They are taking their business elsewhere.
-
That still doesn't make sense though. Why not just buy from the vendor with the best offering? You still have to do research regardless of what type of laptop you want to buy, and then pick the best option.
I'm just trying to understand why it's such a headache for this particular laptop, when you'd have to do an equal amount of research, or even more reasearch for other types of laptops (due to more options). I'd think that would be even more of a headache.
Now if you're in Europe, I definitely understand how that's frustrating. Shipping costs would be insane if you wanted a laptop with Prema's BIOS due to the lack of partner shops in the EU.electrosoft and raz8020 like this. -

I agree with you. Poorly updated generic drivers kill hardware. Some drivers are as old as 2006 and by the time you go to install manufacturer drivers it's already too late.Papusan likes this.

If you lacking prema bios check out my unlocked bios it's not as good as prema because I didn't make ec corrections or more like (dsanke) didn't but it's fully unlocked no partner required but you assume all risk.
Btw buying from eurocom is a mistake unless their your only clevo vendor available but if not it was a big mistake they thee most overpriced clevo seller there is....they cost wayyyyyyyyyyy more then buying directly from clevo. Most x170 cost around 3300 with a 10900k in it and 2080s with them it's probably 1k more -
Yes, and the Micro$lop Monkeys have endowed themselves with way too many privileges relating to updates for device firmware that they have absolutely no business touching. Sooner or later the inevitable is going to happen and they'll push the wrong firmware to the wrong device and kill something they never should have messed with. That may be what is happening here. Don't know, but it's really difficult to find anything but them to blame for it. Of course, they will never admit to their incompetence. Just like when they did their part in corrupting laptop display EDID when Windoze OS X first rolled out. There should be no basis for them having any level of write access to hardware of any kind. To add insult to injury, on top of being stupid, they don't care.DreDre, Clamibot, JCordero31 and 1 other person like this.

Windows 10 offers old/inappropriate Intel driver updates (Sept. 2020)
Posted on 2020-09-27 by guenni
Strange thing that came to my attention on Twitter. Windows Update offers people optional drivers, but they don’t really fit for the machines in question. Microsoft rolls out apparently optional INTEL driver updates of the type INTEL – System – <Date> <Version>.
Addendum: There is also a Microsoft Answers forum post, where a user claims the following:
Why is Windows 10 Update trying to install Surface System 1.0.104.0 and Surface Keyboard 1.0.104.0 on my Dell laptop (Dell Latitude E6420)? It’s showing that the update status is pending install. My OS is Windows 10 Pro 64-bit. Updates were last checked (automatically) today at 12:18 PM CT.Clamibot, raz8020, Mr. Fox and 1 other person like this. -
Samsung seems like they’re being reasonable. They gave me an IT department email to respond to and basically want a video of the issue. So hopefully the laptop freezing and making that god awful noise and going to black is enough.

I’m sure ex amount of years ago they would’ve. So long as they don’t pull the “We can’t reproduce your issue” then it’s fine.Last edited: Feb 21, 2021JCordero31, Papusan, Clamibot and 3 others like this. -
Warranty fulfillment should not require their ability to reproduce the issue or explain the cause of the failure. The product has failed through normal use during the warranty period, so they need to replace it.Terreos said: ↑
