I would love to have again a 18+ inch laptop. i dont use an external monitor so the bigger laptop screen the better![]()

I'm sorry, I don't think my point came across very clearly with my previous comment. I meant I think Nvidia should've supplied actual 3080 desktop chips for laptop GPUs and have the vendors power limit those instead of branding a 3070 as a 3080.
Nope, you're not crazy. They'll consider it if we force them to. Unfortunately they want to see just how much they can get away with and how wasteful they can be until consumers have had enough of thier BS instead of doing things the right way.
Yeah I know businesses exist to make money. There is still a right way to do things though. There's always right and wrong regardless of the context, and regardless of what anyone else wants to think.
Furthermore, companies have demonstrated in the past they are capable of building high quality, long lasting products. We need to push them for excellence again. I'd love to see another 18 inch monster laptop. Even if it's expensive, at least it would exist.Last edited: Mar 11, 2021electrosoft, Colorme, Papusan and 1 other person like this. -
All of the mobile 2080 and 2080S chips were clock-blocked and artificially limited. The problem is the mindset of imposing limits on a laptop for no reason other than it being a laptop and the notion that it needs to be thin, light, run a long time on battery, and not gobble up lots of power. As long as the industry is tethered to the ideals of the lowest common denominators, and their opinions dictate what happens with all laptops, the situation is going to suck for laptop owners that long for something more. As I have always said, we will all have to settle for whatever they (the lowest common denominators) are willing to put up with. This seems to be a sad and sucky fact in many areas of life now.

So I added 2 sticks of 32 GB RAM (HyperX) to the existing 2 sticks of 16 GB (same brand) and right away noticed that videos have a tendency to freeze and when they do freeze the lock up the whole computer. The only way out is to hold down the power button. I fired up XTU and chose Memory stress test which ran for maybe 30 seconds before the computer froze again and had to be forced to shut down.
Obviously, there is something wrong with one of the new sticks, but is there any way to tel which one is bad without repeatedly swapping one out and running the test? Could there be another issue like incompatibility or ?
Thanks -
If the original sticks are not identical part numbers, start by removing them and then re-test. If it still has issues then you probably do have a bad new stick of HyperX. If it is 3200 running at 1.200V then adding the extra sticks could be part of the problem. It is a joke to have 3200 RAM running with 1.200V. The higher capacity modules (16GB vs 8GB) and 4 sticks versus 2, make it even more of a challenge to maintain stability with 1.200V. You may find it works fine with only 2 sticks installed (whether the original or new modules are installed) and only has problems with 4 modules. Increasing the voltage to 1.350V might resolve the issue.Last edited: Mar 11, 2021Papusan likes this.

Ah, yes all are 3200 and same everything except capacity. I have newly flashed Prema bios so can I up the voltage there? -
win32asmguy Moderator Moderator
Are the 16gb sticks dual rank? The newer HyperX 32gb 3200mhz kits (as of december 2020) are single rank IIRC. -
Yes you can bump the voltage to 1.350V with the @Prema BIOS. I recommend doing that for any system with 3200 RAM, even when it seems stable with no discernible issues.
So two sticks are 8GB and two are 16GB? That could be an issue. Also take a closer look at the IC (the actual square black RAM chips) and make sure they are identical on all four sticks. If the ICs are different brands or the same brand with different part numbers, that in addition to non-matching capacity could be causing some problems.
Again, test them in matching pairs. If there are no errors, the mismatched parts could be causing your issues. If there are errors with one pair, test those two modules individually. I have attached TM5. Works nice for testing in Windows. Extract and run as admin.
Samsung and Micron are generally stable and reliable. All of the DDR4 SO-DIMMs that I have tested with SK Hynix ICs have been very sketchy.
Good point, mixing single and dual rank could also be causing issues.
It is never a good idea to install mismatched memory modules. You're not guaranteed to have problems when you do, but you increase the likelihood of having problems with performance, stability, or both.Attached Files:

Not sure. I took delivery of the laptop in October. Right now I am running Windows memory diagnostic and it is 71% complete on first pass with no problems yet. How do I check that spec? If so I may have to get another newer kit?Last edited: Mar 11, 2021

No. I have two sticks of 16GB each and two sticks of 32 GB each for a total of 96 GB. All are HyperX. I will check out that tool. Thanks!Mr. Fox likes this. -
the x170gs-m technically is 18 inches....lol I I set it next to a 17.3 inch alienware from 2012. I don't think I would go "bigger" than an x170gs-m, they just need to use the space they have better.

Here are spec sheets for the single rank and dual rank modules, you can probably match the part number to what you have if you do not want to physically inspect them:
https://www.kingston.com/dataSheets/HX432S20IB2_16.pdf
https://www.kingston.com/dataSheets/HX432S20IB_16.pdf
The 32GB modules are always dual rank.
Anybody happen to know if the memory slots on the X170 are daisy chain or t-topology? If its daisy chain then you may get better performance with two 32GB dual rank sticks, but if its t-topology then you would want 4 16gb single rank sticks if I understand correctly. -
Windows finished the test and found no problems. The stick info is in the image below. Unfortunately, the Kingston website doesn't even think these are part numbers. When I enter these numbers I get "Your search did not produce any results" from Kingston.com. Very strange? Maybe I got a rip-off Chinese copy??
When in Prema mod, what do I do to up the voltage? Which of the many menus is it in? Is there an instruction manual for this? Thanks!

Those part numbers are fine. Dual rank sticks.
You can try setting memory voltage 1.35v (in the same page as your screenshot), and you can also try setting Uncore voltage to 0.125v+ to help with stability as well. -
I am not so sure about that. When I enter the part number into the Kingston.com website, I get zero results, as you can see below. Is there a manual for the Prema Mods?
Thanks

Anyone know anything about upgrading to a 3080?

X170 = width 399 mm
P750 = width 386 mm
Aw m17x = width 410 mm
Clevo X170 is barely wider than a 15 inch laptop from previous gen. Make the bezels even more narrow and the 17,3 inch Clevo won't be much bigger than an 15,6 inch gamingbook from 2018. Some call this a progress = Apple design.
Applebook Pro 17 = width 393 mm

I just wanted to thank those who helped me through the RAM issue I was having, win32asm guy and Mr. Fox and others. I was able to get the RAM voltages up to 1.35 V and start some CFD simulations to really test the system. Image shows that things are working well, and even now several hours later it is still running ~4.85 GHz fairly steadily. My wife has started to call my office "the fan room" because this beast is loud. But it's doing what I wanted it to do, and now I have enough RAM for the larger model I need to build next!

A contact person of Clevo told us that the RTX 3080 has a Max TGP of 165W, so 150W + boost. RTX 3070 has a Max TGP of 140W and RTX 3060 a Max TGP of 130W -
What is this?! Why are there macbook pictures? Shoo! Get out!
Actually I normally like these kinds of laptops. Especially on 15" machines. On a 17" machine I can see it not being idea as the machine is wide enough you can definitely fit a numpad and the keyboard not feel too offset. On a smaller 15" machine I can't stand numpads. Too me the screen is too offset when I'm typing and it just drives me nuts. Plus they always feel cramped to me.
That being said I like it when manufactures actually have the speakers ON the keyboard deck. It seems alot of them are wising up and starting to put them on the sides and bottom instead of just on the bottom these days. So for as much flack I give apple for making dumb design choices I'm gonna give them props for being smarter than most other laptop makers and putting the speakers on the keyboard deck and actually making them sound good.
Now I'm going back to hibernation while I get wrecked for saying something remotely nice about Apple.

I was setting my ram to 1.35 volts which worked successfully. Then I noticed the Nmode setting was set to 2 on my custom profile and the rest of the profiles it was at one and I switched it to 1. Now it turns on to a black screen while the keyboard lights up still and the fans ramp up for 1-2 seconds when you turn it on. I attempted to reset the memory: unplug from power/ dc battery/ ram battery ( csmos maybe?) remove ram/ press power for 20 sec/ plug in ram battery/install ram/ install battery/ plug into wall. Still wont start back up any ideas or am I SOL?
-
Also does anyone know which slot is the A2 slot for the memory?
-
LOL@ "the fan room" - there's a penalty for all that power
How are temperatures at that kind of CPU usage? -
None of that is necessary. Just unplug the 2-pin CMOS battery plug. You can do that by taking the battery out and using a pair of tweezers. Then keep the battery somewhere safe as it is not needed in DTR mode. Now when you run into a bad BIOS setting, all you have to do is, unplug the power and hold the power on key for 30 seconds or so (also unplug all other potential power sources from other ports). Then it will reset itself automatically. You don't have to touch your RAM sticks once installed since the connectors on the motherboard can get loose which can result in intermittent memory failures because the more you take them out and put them back in, the more you make the fitting loose. You don't want a loose RAM socket.
-
Once you undervolt both CPU and GPU, you will be surprised at how silently this machine can operate even while running some of the most demanding workloads. A good laptop cooler helps a lot as well.
-
How much have you undervolted yours?
I am also looking at having a setup with 128 GB Ram and a 10 core CPU, just not sure if I have any use for the 10900k - I certainly would not need to run mine at 5 GHz or above. -
I had a similar situation, but didn’t change the bios. Apparently when restarting the custom profile had changed and was causing the black screen.
maybe try to do what @S.K suggests with holding the power on for 30 seconds. I don’t remember doing that.
My laptop went in for repairs and came back working fine. I don’t touch the bios profiles, as it runs just fine, for me, with stock Prema mod.
-
Neither cpu nor gpu undervolt by themself make the machine any quieter tho.
The most important parts are still binned chips and proper heat transfer (LM etc).. prema bios also does a benefit. -
Hey I followed what you said here and have the battery out and set aside did everything else and its still a black screen. Any further ideas, im getting worried now lol.
-
also I have my SSD installed in the top of the dual slots on the left side if the battery slot is facing toward you. I only mention this because I ordered mine without SSD or memory when I first got it because I already had them. (Both were working prior to this) but when I was first setting it up it would not boot from the single M.2 slot on the right side. Idk if that needs to be changed again possibly just thought it might be relevant information. I appreciate the help.

LM is overrated. The only place I suggest to use it is between the die and the IHS, especially in a piece of hardware that is supposed to be moved around. Everywhere else outside the CPU, a good thermal paste is enough. And you have to set a custom fan profile that is fine tuned for your particular piece of silicon.Spartan@HIDevolution likes this.

Yeah, it's "complicated" to say the least. For the 3080 to be able to run @ 165W the chip needs to not exceed X amount celsius and Y amount simultaneous CPU wattage.
Initial results are slowly popping up:

For combined loads "vRAM muscling" alone won't cut it ...Last edited: Mar 12, 2021 -
Do you need the Control Center in order to use the potential maximum of the 165W TGP set by Nvidia?
Two flaws. 1=TGP castrated by Nvidia. 2=Forced to use software as CCC to <enjoy> the max TGP limits detemined by Nvidia.
The notebook manufacturers can choose the TGP and thus the maximum available computing power within the limits defined by Nvidia. Schenker sets the TGP of the RTX 3060 to 120 watts (115 watts + 5 watts dynamic boost) in the delivery state. In order to exhaust the possible maximum of 130 watts, the Dynamic Boost must be increased to 15 watts via the Control Center.

Hey Do you guys think the gold sample 10900k’s would do anything special in this laptop? I know its not gonna hit 5.7 in this thing but what about 5.1-5.2 at low voltage?
-
Near 100C with thermal throttling going nuts pretty much the whole time. This even after I undervolted the CPU 100 mV...
I saw nowhere to undervolt the GPU in Prema. -
I don’t believe you can edit in the bios. Try intel extreme tuning utility. I also set the clevo control center setting for lighting and fans then deleted it as it will interfere with prema bios default setting.(XTU wont pick up prema’s speed thats default for his bios)
default setting is -.05v but seen guys bump it as far as -.1, for core voltage offset. Foxy has a great video where you can see some of the settings Im talking about.

That does not sound too tempting! Have you tried if reducing CPU speed a bit gives you some lower temperatures and/or fan noise?
I think that by the time you are using all cores you probably would be better off to find a setting that achieves some saner temperatures and maybe you can even get your X170 to not sound like it is ready for takeoff at all times
-
Has there been any information forthcoming about the possibility of a QHD display or a modified heatsink?
With some shops still offering the current generation one has got to wonder what else - hopefully for the better - will change apart from the GPU.DreDre likes this. -

Use Afterburner for the GPU.
Which thermal paste did you use? Which fan speed do you use? -
Apparently ODM can choose not to use DB2.0 for RTX3000s cards. @Frits@LaptopParts4Less are you sure it's not a flat 165w on it?
By doing that you are reducing your money spent to trash value. You shouldn't pay so much money to then nerf the device.BrightSmith likes this. -

And if you want full performance you have to come to terms with max fans.
