That's really a waste of time and money. Just get two of whichever chip you want in SLI.

You can use the GXT 460m for Physx and the GTX 480m for gaming. Because PhysX does lower game performance when done on the same GPU as the 3d gaming.

The GTX 460m would still be overkill though, you could in theory get away with just a GTX 260m (which should fit - I know that at least Alienware sells MXM 3 GTX 260m's). You could also get a Clevo GTX 280m/285m which would be more likely to work. They should start showing up on eBay somewhat cheap (in the $300 range)

When this was discussed a few pages back, someone recommended assigning PhysX to the CPU because the CPU has excess capacity compared to any GPU.

That would work if physx was coded well for the CPU....but it is not. Nvidia has kept it crippled so that it only runs well on a GPU despite the fact that a CPU could easily handle the calculations.

Personally....I do not miss PhysX, it adds almost nothing to games and is not worth it

Add in the fact that so few games use PhysX, and you have a GTX 460M just idling most of the time. Then you feel dumb, having spent enough on that single GTX 480M to have had 460M SLI and a nice SSD. Plus there's still a little bit left for the strippers and blackjack.

Strippers and blackjack > 480M. Clearly. I rest my case.

Thanks guys. I was debating on getting the 460s but I don't plan on overclocking so I figure why not get the best cards for it now?

Fallout NV is gonna be SWEET!

Only bugs I have heard of were when the PSU trips because of too much power draw. It's seems to only happen when people overclock and run multiple demanding benchmarks at the same time. Either way, the Np7280 is on backorder till the middle of this month so they might be revising something.

Oh, I think you ment fallout NW lol! There has been a patch released a few days ago but I don't know the details as of yet. Some people has said the patch has cleared some problems but not all. I gotta do some more research on that.

I would not not be ordering with i7-980X + 480M SLI, until Clevo releases a larger PSU. Why pay for power you can't use?

    i concur!
dont let that be an excuse not to buy.
if you dont over clock..the thing runs as it was intended to. over cocking is a benefit, not a must have feature.

there are ways around the power draw issue for the time being....whether you choose to use them...is entirely up to you.

If you want to stop into our store in Nebraska you are always more then welcome to. What usually differs between sellers is support. Some of the resellers bundle 24/7 Phone Support and Extra Labor Warranties where others do not.

Regarding the power issue Sager is looking into this and there should be a update soon on this.

    Hi folks

Anyone have any insight as to why I can't seem to hold an overclock when my system boots the second time?
I can tweak the system in XTU and it will reboot with the new settings the first time andrun everything stable Prime 95 etc. As soon as I power down or restart it either does the reset post to defaults or just loops and I have to remoce the darn CMOS battery. I narrowed it down to something memory related, and I think it isn't keeping my timings when I reboot the second time after changing with XTU. I tested this theory by lowering my multiplier to 18x at a 160 mhz host clock frequency, and it does the same thing. I'm running 1333 memory and an 950 CPU I've had it running prime 95 full stable at 4.2 ghz before rebooting. Any ideas?

    Bueler.... Bueler?! :)

    Thanks

hello justin.first of all, thank you for providing great customer service support to your customers. your employee hutsady did a tremendous job on helping me on my purchase(the x7200).my status states that my unit is going to the nebraska store.

i want to ask,if my x7200 unit is at my home already and sager offered the solution to the psu unit(e.g sli psu), can i order at your store or what is the protocol?

I think this review showed why you need bigger power supply and overclocking is necessary for gtx480m (because its very low clock rate).

No one ever doubted that it would destroy all other notebooks. That was expected. The only downside to the x7200 is that the price of the GTX 480m is a complete and utter joke. In the past the argument has been that the mobile chips cost more because they are engineered to achieve lower power usage, but the GTS 450 (which is a $120 card.....) uses the same power as the GTX 480m while performing better. And did I mention it is a hell of a lot cheaper? Nvidia really failed here.....not saying it is a weak card, just that nvidia failed miserably.

And there is no point in saying especially xfire, it destroys all other SLI offerings too....the GTX 480m is just a monster compared to anything else on the market. No point in throwing in what is most likely a snipe at Alienwares

your right. that wasn't a snipe bud. i've heard this many times before. every time a card comes out it's only a downclocked version of a cheaper desktop counterpart.. that is usually horribly overpriced.

I like that ati can get a lower TDP for what they have.

i guess it is what it is..

we walk a fine line between desktops and laptops here.. sacrifices have to be made to satisfy the form factor..

i just want to see one 480m unlocked and pushed to the limits. since this should not be a problem..and the card can draw 150+ watts with out drama from having two cards.

Well I have had my x7200 workstation for over a month now, and while I am extremely satisfied, I have some issues.
    Specs:
    980x
    gskill 12gb 1333mhz ram
    single 480m
    crucial c300 128gb SSD
    2x500gb 7200rpm HDD

1st of all, changing any voltages on this machine makes it VERY unstable.

2nd my 480m cant hold an overclock, it always reverts

3rd, my ram keeps getting allocated to Hardware Use, so I have to keep turning max memory on and off

4th, I can overclock to 4ghz by using multipliers, but after extended use i get blue screens. I am using this thing with 60-70% of my ram being used at any time. After about 6 hours of constant use simultaneously running AutoCad Civil 3d 2011, ArcGIS, Photoshop CS5(64bit), Illustrator CS5, Google Earth, Google Sketchup Pro, and sometimes DreamWeaver, I get a timing error or a physical memory dump.
I don't know if the problem is OCing, my ram, windows 7, or something with this computer.
I would greatly appreciate some guidance on this.

Also, when I don't overclock, I dont have issues, maybe I just answered my own question.

I'm in the same boat as you almost, spec wise and OC wise. I got no stabilty problems like you mention.

What bios revision are you using? I'm using this one and it rocks, very stable http://74.212.252.103/pages/notebooks/download.cfm?ProductType=7280
What you using to OC the 480m, evga precision OC's mine nicely, hold the OC too no probs.

I would say it should, being that at the highest settings the game is more gpu dependent anyways and if there is a difference it would be very minor. Clock for clock should not be much difference being that most games don't really utilize more than 2 cpu cores anyways.

Anyone know if they might enable changing the memorydividers? I'mnot really sure why they didn't. I think that's why I can't go past 150 host clock frequency no matter what voltage I give the uncore. This really sucks. I know I can go higher. I also wonder if maybe the XTU changes the divider when you overclock automatically, but then it gets changed back to default when I reboot the second time. Because i can set higher voltages and overclock after the first xtu reset stable at at least 3.8ghz then reboot and no post. Not sure what's doin there. Would be nice to be able to use a high host clock.

    Dex,

I am using the 259.51 stock drivers. I have no issues besides a weird graphic artifact in Fallout 3. I attribute the artifact to driver issues.

    I am playing. Battlefield 2 BC, L4D2, Civ 5, and Fallout 3.
