Does anyone know if the NP7280 comes with stock drivers & BIOS? If so, where can you download the updates? Not very familiar with Sager/Clevo.

So i received my machine recently. It has a i7-950 and dual 460m's. So far I am pretty happy with it. One thing I have seen multiple times is that the machine goes into an almost hard lock state. I say almost because the lights on the keyboard are still on and the fans go to full blast. Right before the screen goes black it usually fills with colored lines. I have seen it directly happen while watching movies but I also just went on a trip and when I came back it was in a hardlock state. I am thinking it's a video driver issue but I think I have the latest (259.51?). Would you all recommend I try and uninstall/reinstall of the video driver? Is there a newer version that people are using?

    Thanks for any help.

Got my tracking number today! Monday is the day of delight!

Side note for anyone ordering from a reseller that refuses to give updates other than a boilerplate "3-7 days" response (*cough* XoticPC *cough*), I was able to get a response within one hour of emailing Sager directly and asking for an update. In my case, my laptop shipped yesterday but as of 5:10 PM Central time today (XotixPC's time zone) I had not received an updated status from them.

Aside from the colored lines I have experienced this with my current laptop but it usually only happens when playing demanding games and never when not running at full clock speeds. I have pretty much narrowed it down to the GPU. When I tore it apart to repaste my CPU and GPU (to try to fix the problem) the GPU heat spreader had black scorch marks on it where the factory paste broke down. Even after this I still have the issue, hence my purchase of the NP7280.

I would definitely seek help from your seller/reseller and not hesitate to send it back within whatever period you have to do so. You shouldn't have to deal with this, not with the money we spend on these things.

I hope I don't have the same problem with mine. I have the same CPU/GPU setup as yours.

No way to get a screenshot. The lines come up and then the screen goes black.

Sounds like a bunk GPU based on what your saying..

I have seen those types of issues on both Nvidia and ATI cards before..

If you have tested other drivers and done a fresh OS install its more then likely a video card on the fritz..

You could always try reseating the cards and the SLI cable as another way to trouble shoot if your up to the task..

I put a support ticket in with Malibal. We'll see what they say. I could break into the case and start messing around but I would rather not if I can avoid it.

I asked Babyhemi about this and he said false also. Clevo said better cooling with the one vent closed and all models extreme or not have it closed. Mine also came with it closed and I have the 980.

So i think I narrowed the issue down to having something to do with the theme. When I was using one of the Aero themes I could reproduce the issue pretty easily. When I was using one of the basic themes I wasn't. Sounds like a driver issue to me. Anyone else have dual 460's having problems?

so, from those of you that have one of these...realistically how is it to have one of these on your lap?

I've used a 17" laptop on my couch for years; i realize this is a bigger 17", but is it that much more cumbersome on your lap than your average 17"?

Since Aero themes are using the 3D capabilities of the GPU (albeit at a lower clock speed) the issue is still likely to be your GPU. Do you find that this happens when gaming for any period of time?

^^ This can easily be a driver issue. My wife's Lenovo W510 had this problem till the last video driver update, which solved it 100%. 460M's are still very fresh so driver glitches aren't totally unexpected.

If multiple people had similar symptoms in similar situations with the same rev of the hardware I could agree, and this very well may be the case. Still, without such corroborating information, I think the owner should be wary of their return window fading away.

    @ jmcmike

I was also told once payment was received, that it would take "3-7 business days". Mine just entered into Phase 2 yesterday. Not sure how much testing has to be done, but hoping Monday or Tuesday at the latest since they are closed on weekends. Just in case, what type of info/proof did you need when you emailed Sager about your machine?

If there is a hardware malfunction, then the 'return window' is however long the warranty is.

Anybody having problems with blu-rays? most of the time i can't get my drive to recognize them, dvds and cds work fine. Usually only right after I turn my computer on I can get a BD to play but after a few minutes of watching it gets slower and slower like its trying to buffer then quits reading the disk and says theres no disc. Very bothersome... i swear this computer hates me, so many problems

This is a very rare problem. The blu-ray drives in these models have been very reliable and have a very low return rate. Try to eliminate any possible software issue first before suspecting a failing drive I would say... :)

i own the GTX 480M sli model for like 7 hours and this definitely is not a machine you want in your lap is to heavy and bulky but i think there is things you have to sacrifice to get that kind of performance :D :)

one more thing , i may order one with GTX 460m i know is heavy, bulky and loud but if the machine doesn't have issues 'll be happy because i don't use on my lap i put it on my bed cart and play on my bed ;)

For the best results, you should contact your reseller directly for order / shipping status. At this time these models are shipping about 3 business days after payment is recieved... :)

it does not look like an old cheap laptop but you have to keep in mind this is not an Alienware or a Macbook pro is just a Custom Laptop" and some people find the size to be unacceptable for a laptop

i think is all about the personality you can find this beautiful or not so you have to see it in person to qualify it :)

I find it quite sophisticated looking. It's not flashy like an Alienware but it has it's touches that make you go "Ohhh" when you finally get it in your hands. The aluminum is a nice feel over my last plastic cased laptop. The weight is rather much, I don't mind it in my lap, as long as your not gaming because it does get uncomfortably hot for your legs, but other than that it's not like the weight will make your legs go numb or feel pain. It and the PSU in the included carrying bag makes me want to lean to the opposite side while carrying. A backpack is much better suited. I just wish there was a way to turn off the logo light, it's really bright when I'm trying to sleep. But black electric tape looks good over it.

I saw some Malibal people hanging around in this forum. I was wondering if they could tell us what happened with the HotHardware review of their X7200 system. Apparently, according to HotHardware the review was sort of forcefully removed from the site:

I've had this NP7280 for a few weeks now, and I've also owned an alienware (9750). To compare:
This one is way heavier and bigger. I wouldn't want it on my lap, although the bottom doesn't get nearly as hot as the Alienware.

This one seems a lot sturdier built than the alienware also. The alienware felt a lot more fragile, and the power button was horrible, just wating to break.

This one is a lot louder, and the fans constantly go on and off (even with SLI off). Although the pitch is less annoying than on the alienware (if that makes sense).
This screen is brighter. I liked that you could shut the lights off on the Alienware, you can't on this one.
I liked the touch pad much better on the alienware. This has one of those touch pads where the button is hard to press, so you feel like carpal tunnel after a few hours. I resort to tapping the pad instead to click. (yuck!)
This keyboard is different (a little smaller I think?) I keep hitting the wrong keys, need to get used to it, but I like the feel a lot better.
Audio was better/and louder on the alienware.
No modem on this one (I used for emergencies when cable modem went down).
Oh. and I HATE THE POWER CORD on this one. TOO SHORT and HEAVY.
    Think that is everything...

Well I just got my 120gb OCZ Vertex 2 in and did a fresh OS install, so far no blue screening and my volume up touch button works now, wierd. As for the blu-ray, it seems it takes a few tries to get it to read it, or if I put a dvd in and take it out, then put a blu ray in it works fine until I take it out and put it back in again. I suppose I can put up with this since I don't really use BDs that much. As for the SSD, it just puts a big smile on my face watching how well Win7 performs now.

I'm a committed couch potato, so I need a way to use the x7200 on the couch.

I made myself a lapdesk today out of oak - i hate anything sitting on my lap so it has a couple inches of clearance; it feels really nice, the height is perfect - like i'm at a desk.

some pics of it with my 15.6" on it (haven't ordered my x7200 yet)

Thanks lawtq. I see you pretty much have the same setup as I will be ordering. I am concerned about the gtx 480m paired with the 980x. I will mainly be using the machine for video editing with premiere. Mostly high bitrate HD content which will stress both the gpu and cpu. Over in the Adobe forums they were advising against this setup because of overheating/power problems. Have you experienced any problems? Also do you know if I can have 1 SSD drive as OS/programs and then RAID drives 2/3 (750GB7200rpm drives)?
