How is the 460M SLi setup faring against the M17x's 5870m xfire setup that you had? The performance should be similar--I don't trust Tom Hardware's review at all. And yeah the M17x RGB LED is fantastic, it's the reason I haven't considered any other gaming notebook.

Performance is about equal but lowest frames are better on the 460's :)

i use 256mb that should be enough

Sorry, but I am not all that clear. Are you saying that you never noticed the color banding on the original 7280 screen or that there is no banding on the new screen? I am trying to determine if this 'upgraded' screen produces enough colors convincingly to be worth the cost.

    let's make this simple

handstar screen= bad color reproduction, rich blacks low brightness no banding

AUO screen = good color reproduction, bad black levels, high brightness no banding

Yup, that's a very good point, Bro. We are currently into HS modification for better cooling on certain systems. Our goal is to offer AG RGB LED TN and IPS options but there are no manufacturers offering those in 1080p or willing to work directly with small companies (HP and Dell are always first in line). But we have our ways to secure what we need, so stay tuned ;)

Thanks, in doing some testing with various color gradient images online I don't think the stock LCD panel has any major issue with color banding. In fact it seems to do quite well.

So my question is now, why do I see so much color banding in games that I did not see on my last system (with an Nvidia 9800m gts)? The best I can describe it is where smooth color transitions should be, there is banding, almost as if the color depth was decreased or the lcd panel was incapable of displaying enough colors.

if you see some like this in games you may have a defective screen because i didn't noticed nothing like that on the original X7200 screen

I don't see anything like that outside of games and it's not as bad as that either.

The following images show up pretty good on the 7280. There is some minor banding and dithering is apparent when you get up close but I don't expect perfection from a 6 bit display.

So it seems as though what I am seeing is really only an issue in games. Specifically Dragon Age has some serious banding in color gradients but then again I have seen forum posts complaining of the same thing in this game. I don't recall it being bothersome on my old laptop so perhaps I am just being hypercritical with the new box.

Also, Eve Online seems to have more apparent banding in space than before.

Perhaps it is just due to the screen being so much brighter (it is) but I wish I could find a way to minimize it.

i agree with all of these except....system restore.
system restore is just to vital to just turn off...no one misses it till their computer crashes or they install the wrong driver/browser addon or ie just acts stupid like it normally does..every few months. :D
not to mention norton and mcafee issues and the new avg 2011 issues with installs.

^^^^Along with what was said by the others, under speaker configuration select 5.1, then make sure under optional speakers make sure to check center, subwoofer, side pair. All the others checked on that page too. Sound effects can help in some instances, you might want to try out a few. Then under the default tab I selected 24bits 44100 Studio Quality. This is how I got the sound in the YouTube Audio Test I did a couple of months ago.

is this program for the internal speakers in addition to or instead of the recommended configurations already listed or is this a program for external speakers?

This laptop is no joke. I call it my man-top.

Between the cost and the weight I find myself being more cautious than usual when moving it around. It is easy to actually pick up and move for anyone of even moderate strength but it is heaver than you expect of a laptop so it catches you off guard at first.

It is something a few of us have used with good results on other laptops such as the one in my sig in addition to a given configuration. It will improve the sound of the internal speakers as well as external.

Well, I have had it for a week now and it is a force to be reackoned with! You will find yourself being very cautious when moving it from point A to B. I tried the free messenger bag that comes with the machine and it is a very tight fit at best plus it scratches the lid so I wrap it in the shipping bag before placing it in the bag. I eventually resorted to my old Targus backpack (still using the plastic) until I can find a suitable bag to protect DaBeast. Not the best of protection so I am extremely careful, but everything fits. I am convinced that any 17.3" backpack or smaller is still insufficient and will require an 18" backpack if it even exists.

I don't think it's too bad to carry around. The bag that comes with it fits everything surprisingly well - just don't count on extra space for a cooler or anything

Has anyone tried the x7200 in an Alienware Orion backpack? Mine can comfortable fit both my M17x and the PSU as well as my Cryo LX cooler. I also have the Mobile Edge Premium Backpack that can fit all that and more.

The Intel and nVidia section are usually in the same building at CES. I will be looking at Sandy Bridge offerings and the mobile section of nVidia mainly. I am not to sure about AMD, I'm not sure what they will have there. I will be taking pics and maybe some videos... :)

Well, yes..everything fits in the messenger bag including the power supply. The tight fit was meant for the laptop compartment. It is a tight fit and it left some small scratches that an "owner" would definitely notice. I only gave it one chance to scratch and immediately initiated emergency protocols to prevent it from happening again..thus the plastic bag! I really prefer a backpack before I settle for a messenger bag since I take it to and from work 5 nights a week.

I have to ask, which do you prefer..the Alienware or the Mobile Edge? Are both weatherproof and how about comfort on back, shoulders and the waist/kidney area?

Both are very well built and water resistant. The Orion is also made by Mobile Edge. Both backpacks are made out of VERY tough nylon fabric. If you are more concerned about water/weather, then the Premium Backpack is an excellent choice. The large flap that covers it has a foam lining that makes it waterproof/resistant for downward water like rain.

I find that I use the Premium Backpack more because it has more space in it. The Orion backpack is a better laptop backpack though as it offers much better protection for the laptop. Both are great bags all around.

+1 to Orion Backpack. I used it for M17X in the past and now carry the 8740w in it on a daily basis. The weight distribution is great, very easy on your lower back and shoulders. Highly recommend it.

    Thanks scook9,

It snows alot in Alaska and I am transporting to and from work at least 5x/wk. Trying to cut down on two bags..(1 for laptop and 1 for snacks and misc. stuff). I like the protection of the Orion, but may go with the Premium...flip of the coin if I still can't choose. ROFL

If you are concerned about carrying more than just the laptop and its accessories, then the premium backpack will be the way to go.

I cannot speak to the newer Orion model (the checkpoint friendly one) as I have the original one that is smaller, but my Orion is definitely a laptop and accessories only bag since it is smaller.

Both fit VERY well and are extremely comfortable.
