i'm not sure where you are hearing that sandy bridge processors have a higher performance. the 980x and 990x and 970 are all more powerful than any sandy bridge processor.

PassMark Intel vs AMD CPU Benchmarks - High End

as far as an x7200 variant with sandy bridge, I think you're going to wait uutil at least Q3 2011 or longer. IMO

Nice I usually use Virtualbox. I still thought I would need new drivers for linux to run properly as a virtual machine?

I'm pretty new to linux and just want to set up a local web server to play around with. Getting into web dev. Have only used Debian and Ubuntu. So Vmware some how uses the windows drivers or will Ubuntu download new drivers? If so are there any out yet?

Sounds like Vmware is the go! I am downloading it as I type :)

    Cheers!

Wouldn't you think something like this would be in a different model? Is the Clevo x8100 due for a new rev?

Besides, I don't really know if it's been done before - switching a product model from one socket type to another, as I don't believe the LGA-1155 is socket compatible with LGA-1366.

Only Clevo (and maybe their partners) know for sure.

Nope. Virtualization will present "plain jane" computer components to your "guest" operating system's detection routines. Most of them, Ubuntu, Debian, RedHat, Windows (XP, Vista, 7, etc.), etc. all have built in drivers for that generic hardware.

this is probably going to be a silly question but the x7200 is the latest model from clevo correct? I keep reading different model numbers on the boards and I am getting confused on which one is the latest.

They can all be considered desktop replacements. X7200 is the only one sporting desktop processors though.

mostly i would be using it as a work laptop, for 3d max, Revit, Autocad, the adobe suites and also as a gaming laptop for the occasional break.

My 5760's motherboard died, so i have been lurking around trying to find the right time to get a replacement

I found the impressive info about Sandy Bridge here: The Sandy Bridge Review: Intel Core i7-2600K, i5-2500K and Core i3-2100 Tested - AnandTech :: Your Source for Hardware Analysis and News

This is a small part of the article:

...Unlike Lynnfield, Sandy Bridge isn’t just about turbo (although Sandy Bridge’s turbo modes are quite awesome). Architecturally it’s the biggest change we’ve seen since Conroe, although looking at a high level block diagram you wouldn’t be able to tell. Architecture width hasn’t changed, but internally SNB features a complete redesign of the Out of Order execution engine, a more efficient front end (courtesy of the decoded µop cache) and a very high bandwidth ring bus. The L3 cache is also lower and the memory controller is much faster. I’ve gone through the architectural improvements in detail here. The end result is better performance all around. For the same money as you would’ve spent last year, you can expect anywhere from 10-50% more performance in existing applications and games from Sandy Bridge....

From PassMark, this data looks like Sandy Bridge is an outstanding value:

    Intel Core i7 990X @ 3.47GHz 10,547 $999.99*
    Intel Core i7 980X @ 3.33GHz 10,516 $999.99*
    Intel Core i7 970 @ 3.20GHz 9,936 $599.99*
    Intel Xeon W3680 @ 3.33GHz 9,381 $1,059.99*
    Intel Xeon X5675 @ 3.07GHz 9,326 $1,479.99*
Intel Core i7-2600K @ 3.40GHz 9,309 $328.00* This is the Sandy Bridge CPU

Yes, the price to performance ratio of the i7-2600k is extremely impressive.

But that is in the desktop arena. Irregardless of the Cougar Point chipset recall / fix, there's been no official word of when a laptop vendor will use the DESKTOP version of the an SNB chip in a laptop chassis. Being the ink is not yet dry on the x7200's release, I think it will be a while (months??) before you hear anything.

If you go through history of this thread, I think some people were speculating near year's end.

    Hey guys,

I have a couple of questions.

    1) Can "Intel Xtreme Utility" software is used for overclocking on x7200?
    2) In x7200's BIOS, does it have an option like "Extreme Memory Profile"?
    3) What exactly "Extreme Memory Profile" option can offer in term of overclocking?
    4) Is this one of the x7200's BIOS?

    Thank you.

Speedy told me that Intel XTU was really buggy. There was a point where he had to remove the CMOS battery because it messed up the X7200.

    4) So, is this current/latest BIOS or older BIOS?
    3) I asked because there is one option hidden in BIOS (no. 4) which is called "Extreme Memory Profile". It's have options; Disabled, Profile 1, Profile 2. I don't know what it is for but based on the name, maybe it is for memory overclocking. Anyone know more about this?

    Other interesting stuff:-
    - Bus Speed Override
    - Bus Speed Support
    - Core Ratio Limit
    - Flex Ratio Override
    - tCL Override
    - TDC Limit
    - TDP Limit
    - Flex Vid Override

Oops, I didn't realize that Sandy Bridge was strickly a laptop CPU. Now I am thinking that maybe I don't need the horsepower and weight and noise and heat of an X7200. I'm going to research the NP8179 but I might be back.

It's not, but there are two "versions" of SNB CPUs - a "desktop version" (something like the i7-2600 k) and a "mobile version" (i7-2920X M for example).

I'll be the 1st to admit I am not up to speed on the latest laptop offerings since purchasing the x7200, but I haven't seen any SNB laptops configured with the desktop SNB CPUs. They may exist, but the offerings I've only seen are for the SNB "M"obile CPUs.

There are no laptops with a desktop SNB cpu. The only one I would expect to see would be made by Clevo and I would expect that to be the LGA2011 part NOT the LGA1155 stuff that is out now

Along with the above I posted on early this morning also:
Sager is offering a new wireless card: Bigfoot Networks Killer™ Wireless-N 1102.
    More info here:
Sager has tested this exciting Gaming Wi-Fi card offering from Bigfoot networks, however they have noticed that on some of the models the hardware Wi-Fi LED indicator does not function. Sager has tested and the card will function as it should 100%, you will need to view if the RF Signal is being turned on / off with-in windows.

I cannot imagine that the BigFoot card will be worth what it will cost (most likely around $100). And does this mean that there will be no X25-M G3 SSDs for people on Sata 2 platforms (including all the x7200s out there)?

But is the 510 being considered the G3 for Intel SSDs or will there be an X25-M G3?

And I am genuinely surprised at the BigFoot price, good for them. Shame their desktop parts are stupidly expensive

Do you flashed the BIOS with it? It looked the same?

Since no one has heard about it before, so it is not an older BIOS version. I guess, that's answered my final question. Thanks.

Looks like the Bigfoot Wireless-N 1102 is capped @ 300MB transfer and Bigfoot will release the Bigfoot Wireless-N 1103 at Q2 which has 450MB transfer.

Can you give me a modded BIOS for the X7200. The one that you made for me on when I still had my D900F worked perfectly.

    -=-=-=-=-=-

Anyone knows what's happening @ LaptopVideo2Go? I was gonna go to the forums to get the modified version of IDT Audio Driver that works with the X7200, so everyone here can have something better than Realtek.
