Just write a script to copy the files you want backed up to the second drive, then put a shortcut to it in your startup folder, so everytime you power up it backs up the files. This is what I do, and it works flawlessly (and it's free).
-
There are numerous solutions out there to do the backups... Acronis is one that comes to mind and is quite popular, also aneother popular one is Macrium Reflect . Also I belive windows7 has a backup feature also. Set it to backuo to your second drive automatically....
All of these will do a full then incrimentals.... -
While I agree thats a great way to backup just files, it doesnt help much for a OS crash/restore situation.
-
So, just for &^its and giggles, any one know what expected battery life on this thing is, say playing a DVD movie ? Jumping on a plane next week and just wondering if I can expect to see a movie or not, assuming I turn off SLI.
-
I know one of the guys who wrote macrium...It's a very powerful program, though not as easy to set up as alot of other solutions.
-
I dont actually use any of the above solutions, I have a different set up. I back all my windows systems (mine/wifes/sons) to a WHS server nightly, which is then itself backup'd to Amazons S3 cloud weekly.
My unix servers are backed up to my storeage array in the basement.
I have herd good things about both Acronis and Macrium though. -

I would not expect much in the way of DVD viewing....maybe an episode of a show....lol

Hey all. I've loved this post, very helpful... But I sadly am shelfing my NP7280 and going back to using my Alienware M9750. It is lighter, longer battery life, better screen with higher resolution, louder, and most importantly - a 70" power cord. I really hate to give up all this GREAT PERFORMANCE, but for me the pros weigh in favor of the M9750...I'll pick it back up and maybe replace the screen if they come out with a longer cord. Good luck guys...

You should look at the M17x R3 based on all the things you just said. At least an M17 (based on the W840DI, newer generation of the M9750)
-
Kinda what I was thinking.....I have come to think of it more as a internal UPS than a bettery
-
I was ALMOST following your reasoning...but the length of the power cord ?? you cant be serious....
-
I bought a backpack (Targus XL) to carry my x7200 around. Its good exercise, especially with carrying both adapters
-
I also previously carried my D900F (which is retired).
-
I think my suggestion of an extension cord a while back must not have worked.
I cannot speak of AW power cords, but of all the laptops I've ever owned (Sager, Dell, HP, Gateway, and Toshiba) they've all had about a 4 foot length b/w transformer and laptop.
Wish you luck, PPPeterCT. -
How do you manage to still have a battery that works in your 9750? I haven't been able to find a replacement battery for mine in almost two years.
Is an extension cord unacceptable? (Edit) Now I see this has already been mentioned.
I wish I could get you to trade your 7280 for my 9750.
dt -
Didn't someone mention a company that makes custom PSU? Sounds like all you are wanting is an extension between the brick and laptop? I am sure a simple wire splice would not be beyond the capabilities of many places...
-
If you are going to watch movies on a plane, a ~$500 iPad is the way to go. I watched 2 full length movies, and still had about 50% battery left on mine...
-
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
Or just buy a netbook for even less.....then you can have an external optical drive to watch whatever you want. That is what I do with my M11x. I take it AND the M17x when I travel. One is the desktop, other is the mobile computer haha

Hi guys maybe some one knows this and can help me is it pos to run 480m as ded physx and a 485m as grafic not sli you guys understand what i mean
i know its pos when you have 460m as ded physx and 470m as grafic since you actualy could buy that setup with the np7280 before -
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
Should be be possible but would be an incredible waste. The 480m is painfully inefficient and should be considerable overkill for the physx demands of any game out today. You are better off just using something like a 460m or 470m as they are much more efficient
-
I know but i have the 480 in sli now but im thinking about upgrading if its pos then i can get one card at a time and sell of the 480m before buying the second one
becouse im not happy with the cards wright now specialy when i was 10 days late for a free exchange
I rma my bby becouse all the ram just died at the same time some kind of mobo failure and if i had the failure 10 days earlier the would have put in the 485 with no charge and its killing me
-
I know abbreviations are all the rage, and my spelling isnt that great by any means, but I read pos as Piece Of Sh*&......
-
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
That is also my usual use of said acronym lol
-
Thats actually not a bad idea........
-
Couldn't you buy a longer cord, just to replace the end which plugs into the wall socket?
-
Sorry dident use as a acronym i shorten possibilities just becouse im lazy
and didnt think about the acronym
-
NP man, I just had to re-read it a few times is all
-
I can't get an extention cord (as far as I know), because it is the second half of the cord that is too short, not the wall plug side. If there is an extention available please let me know. It is 48" vs. the 70" on my previous 2 laptops. It may sound trivial but it is a big deal because the huge brick doesn't reach the floor, and I have no room on the table or bedstand for it. If I move the laptop at all, like to put it down, or to reach the printer, it pulls and the brick falls (and then pulls the laptop). I could go on and on... Odd for such an expensive laptop to skimp on a couple feet of cord.
-
AW power cord is significantly longer than that, just as PPPeterCT says.
But then is it a blessing or a curse? It would depend on workspace composition and personal preference, e.g. I greatly prefer the short and tidy cord of an x7200 to the useless, cumbersome mess of cable dragging behind an AW.

I got my M11x on the dell outlet for $500. That is hard to beat and the starting price for an iPad
-
Funny, I was thinking the opposite thing... odd for any laptop to come with such a long and bulky cord (70").
-
Hey guys, my first post here though I have to say that I've been following this forum frequently for the past year ever since I decided to purchase a 7280.
I'm so happy with the performance I'm getting and this beast is easily the best purchase I've made
My specs are 980x, 12 gb ram, gtx 485m sli
I'm a bit worried regarding the driver support for the gtx 485m as most of the driver updates don't seem to support this particular card. I've read here from many users that the 470m is quite similar to a 485m and that modifying the .ini file should work fine with the 485m. I have no clue as to how one does that:-( Does modifying the beta drivers in such a way improve performance?
Nvidia has just released the 270.51 verde beta drivers and there is still no support for the 485m. What's surprising to me is the fact that the drivers readily support their latest 5 series notebook cards. In the driver details, they mention support for 400M gfx cards; will downloading this beta driver in its current state do more harm than good?
Here's the link for your reference.
NVIDIA DRIVERS 270.51 BETA
I appreciate any help and suggestions. Thank you. -
I was actually looing on there also and saw deals like that...

Of course if you want piece of mind...a brand new M11x R1 is only $599 right now

Hey, wwoods...
Dunno if you're interested anymore, but SD25 was released for the XTs.
BTW, anyone know of an NEC, Sager, or Clevo link to download the USB 3.0 drivers/firmware? I'm trying to keep the x7200 drivers wiki up to date, and would prefer to use a link directly from the component manufacturer - different from station-drivers site. -
Dunno if this is what you're looking for, but its what I use:
custom gaming laptops - Welcome to Sager Notebooks -
Yes I am, thanks for heads up, I still have XT's in the wifes system.....you try it yet? I may sit on it a bit to se how works out, wifes system seems pretty happy right now.
-
No. No noticeable problems with the XT drives in SD24 at this time. Since I try to live by the "If it ain't broke..." philosophy, I'm a bit hesitant right now.
Perhaps some day. -
No, the Sager stuff is old. See the wiki link in my sig if you want a more up to date look at your x7200 drivers. Feel free to add/edit on your x7200 experiences.
In any case, someone posted here about new NEC USB 3.0 drivers on station-drivers.com. I'm looking for a link from an "official" source - preferably NEC. This way the little wiki can have it too. -
Totally agreed, the XT's in my wifes system are running fine with sd24, there not raid, but thats ok.
On that note, how is your raid holding up with the XT's ? I honestly think its just a raid5 setup that was messing with things..... -
Zero problems since installation. You know the history - started getting nervous when your problems started up... upgraded to SD24 when I started looking at the Seagate forums. But have not yet encountered any kind of problem since setting them within the system.
However, I just upgraded to Firefox 4.0 (FF4) this week. I did see a small "freeze" on FF4 two days ago. However, I think this may be a FF issue as Thunderbird, Miranda IM, and everything else was still responsive. Only FF seemed to have the freeze, which lasted about 6 seconds. -
Well, if it makes ya feel better, I upgraded to FF4 also and have those little stutters also.......also over on the Windows7 Forums forums, people saying the same about FF4, so I would tend to agree, its a FF4 issue
Glad to hear its working out for ya, the XT's -
Yea, I just dont think I could convince the wife I need ANEOTHER computer, after I dropped the cash on this, and just this week bought 6TB of disk for my WHS.......
Think I have reached my spending limit on these things for a while...... -

I hear you. My new receiver just bumped back me getting into paintballing haha

Wonder what driver they were using for the test.

Jealous ? I mean seriousely, the point of your post was what...? I know for a fact that the ATI option for this system has just recently come avaliable, so...uh...yea, this has ben mostly nvidia up untill recently.
Go troll somewhere else.... -
Nvidia GeForce GTX 485M 2 GB

Mobile Driver Version 265.77 -
Dumb question... Isn't that what has been reported since the ATI 6970s were released on the x7200 - that nVidia 485 SLI was ~10% better than ATI 6970s CF?
-
I dont think there is any question that the 485s are faster. The misleading thing about the article is that he makes it appear that the 485s are also cheaper. Obviously, they are not. I posted a comment on the article. Hopefully, he will clarify.
On another note, has anyone with dual GPU tripped a single PSU just during normal gaming? I know you need both to rune Prime, etc. but do you need both to game at high details at max resolution? It would be great if I could leave one of the PSU at home, since I dont plan on sitting around and running Prime all day.
