Well my friends, I seem to have an issue with my X7200... I was having all kinds of trouble getting my thermals correct in OSX. I ended up switching to Se7en (Thank my lucky stars!). I opened HWThermals from CPU-ID to find across my cores a Low of 64C Average 91C and High 98C. I immediately shut the machine down, opened up the back and removed the heatsink. I found some interesting results with my paste, as you can see by the pictures below. The paste was applied correctly, but the heatsink does not correctly seat to the cpu... am I doing something wrong or should I be contacting my rep??? Let me know.
Thank you as always,
~Kennyroody

Hi m8 can i recomend using maybe image hack or tinypic for your pics since the site you put them on is one file per 30 min

We also would prefer to be able to see them online rather than have to download them to view.

Looks like you have a concavity to the CPU or heatsink. I would try lapping the heatsink to even it out first since lapping the cpu would make it unidentifiable and kill its warranty
Or just try more paste. I have never been a fan of the spread method except for the monster nvidia desktop GPUs. I just put a blob in the middle and let the heatsink spread it out. This also give you a good picture of your contact. -
is the paste hardend in the center ??
if not ether to much paste in the ends or the heat cink is warped .
you can ether rma or sand down carefuley the ends on the copper plate just a fraction aprox the amount needed its hard work since you must use a wery high i think it called grain count on the sanding paiper so it wont make so deep cuts in the copper then of course when you start getting to the point where you are done shange paper to even a higher grain count then last but not least go over it with a pure polish paiper until it looks like a mirror then your done (you can always use a polish paste insted of polish paiper ) and to test how much is tuching you can use cant remember the english name now but it almost the same as a magic marker you pait it on the area you want it to tuch puche them together with same forse the screws would take them apart since the almost microfilm of paint dont dry the color should transfere on the area thats tuching and you will know if its compleatly tuching if not take of some more from the area that was tuching -
As scook9 said, one way to work this out "might" be w/ the rice-sized glob, but since you have them apart (and assuming you don't mind waiting) perhaps your vendor can swap for new sinks/fans. -
I ended up trying the straight edge against both the heatsink and CPU. Both looked perfect.
What I ended up doing was using the stright line blob method of coating the CPU. I am now happy to report 37C idle and with Mercalli 2.0 (Adobe Premiere CS5) max settings I get a healthy 94-96C. (Great torture test of CPU) Once Mercalli is finished temps go right back to 40-45C respectfully. I have no overclocking at all.
I may order a new heatsink just to be safe. I will let you know how everything turns out over the next month.
Thank you for the advice about "lapping" the heatsink, I read some articles about what is involved. It sounds like a fun project, I am however in Iraq, I don't have whats required readily available. Maybe when I get home I will be willing to up to a 990X and see what kind of fun thermals I can get down too.
Once again thank you everyone for your speedy advice and solutions.

Mine just came in from Xotic. Very nice so far, but I havent really been able to fool with it much yet.
I do have a question though - what do you world travelers use to haul this thing around with? I travel pretty regularly. I have a nice Swiss Guard laptop backpack, and its awesome, but I am a lawyer and will be taking this thing to meetings and hearings and such and would like something a bit more "professional" looking. I can always find a ballistic nylon bag somewhere, but I would like something a bit nicer than that...
Does anyone have any suggestion? I am thinking roller bag, because even though I knew it would be 12lbs, its weight still suprised me... -
I definitely would go with either a backpack or roller. I have had heavy laptops for a long time and a satchel style gets old fast when packing it around airports and such. Remember that with the power supply and a few assorted items your bag is likely going to way near 20 lbs and goes up from there if you pack a lot of peripheral items. I usually carry the power supply in my carry on and that spreads the weight around a little. I would do a roller myself but where I go you often have to carry anyways so the backpack is a natural. And yes I know you said roller but I thought I would point out what you are looking at from the trenches so to speak when you drag around a jumbo laptop. Satchel= bad, backpack=best if you must carry it a lot where it cannot be rolled. Roller=best if you can roll it must of the time.

I just heard that their are some issues with the 7280 mobo and they are delaying the orders for the laptop. Can anyone confirm this?
-
-
Jason xotic pc. I was told that their they are releasing a new version of the motherboard to fix some issues, because of this the delay on the 7280 has been indefinate. I spoke to Jason on the 28th.
-
I just got off the line with Malibal, its for Sandy Bridge mobo's. Not NP7280.

No the mb delay was real. There was a new revision which was in q and a and all 7280 production was on hold. I got that straight from sager which would not honor the 2 day build and ship for 49 bucks deal because of it. That was a couple weeks ago though and my understanding is they are again shipping with the new revision. Prostar, powernotebooks, xotic, all confirmed that there was a new mobo revision.

BTW the 6970m didn´t need any MoBo-change? We were speculating about that in the X7200 Benchmark Thread...
-
The major change involves a common port that is missing...
-
Just curious what it could be. -
Is it the HDMI-in?
-
I can confirm the delay as well. XoticPC changed my order status to phase 3, which they are using as a placeholder for custom screen installation. 12 business days later, I still haven't received a status update, so I contacted them. It was then that they told me that there were 'complications' with the motherboard and that Sager and Clevo are trying their best to get it fixed and start shipping again.
What irks me the most about this is that I had to contact XoticPC first before they told me all this, and I thought that by the time it reached Phase 3, it meant that the laptop was already in the hands of XoticPC. Either this means that Sager told them to hold shipment of all current NP7280's, or that they never really did get the machine from Sager to begin with. I'm saddened that I had to come onto the forums to get more information on the matter. We'll see how things go from here on out...
By the way, does anybody have an ETA on when the new revision will be shipping? I've already waited a month for my order and if I have to wait another, I might as well cancel my order and pick up something else. -
-
You can get one from prostar with the old motherboard shipped immediately.
-
OK, I am a bit concerned here, my vid card seemed to be getting a tad hot so I fired up GPUZ and this is what I see.....
See card #1, fan speed = 100%
See card #2, fan speed = NOT EVEN LISTED !!
ideas about whats goin on ?Attached Files:

Its the same thing on my machine. I wouldnt be worried about it as long as you can check the temperatures of both cards.

Did we ever come to a consensus that when LGA 2011 socket comes out that would be the most likely time SNB desktop CPUs would be in a Clevo [DTR].
BTW, had to use a work around for drivers... See sig. -

Hello,
is that true that Users with the Nvidia Cards can not change to the new AMD 6970 Card?
I ask because a shop say to me follows:
Is this not correct?
Are here people who change from Nvidia 460/470/480/485m to the new AMD 6970M? -
Nope, the same motherboard is being used for both. I can say this with some assurance, see sig. Get the bios up to date, drop ching, done.
-
hey, fellas... what kind of memory modules does the x7200 uses? is it a regular desktop memory as well as the cpu?
over here YouTube - Nvidia GeForce GTX 480M - mySN Schenker Notebook in der Redaktion
i've noticed RAM located under the VGA and want to know if any of you tried to switch to a bigger capacity modules? how hard is that? thanks... -
and the bigest module if you believe eurocom is 8gb per module times 3 slots 24gb total . -
Yeah, so that's just a regular laptop memory modules... i didn't find any 3x2Gb or more capacity bundles, so vendors just buy 2x2Gb dual channel modules and fit 3 of those in the laptop! but can x7200 then support a tri-channel memory?
-
See sig.......

Hi guys who of you guys where intrested in the 8gb so-dimm modules
