    Hi,

I have a lot of experience with server RAID performance, some points for you to consider:

    * RAID initialisation typically affects benchmarks heavily - perhaps by as much as 30-50%. We always wait for initialisation to complete before benchmarking.

    * We always benchmark all the stripe sizes to find the best performance. Some raid controllers perform better with 64k, others with 128k. One controller with 4GB BBU Ram performed best with 512k stripes. Bottom line is benchmark all configs before settling on your live config.

    * For VM/VHD usage, we have found using 64k NTFS in both the parent and VHD file systems is more performant. YMMV.

    HTH.

Yea, I understand waiting for after initilize. And the controller is the one in the lappy here, ICH10 I believe. I am 64K right now, and think will stay that way, I just dont have the hours will take to do 64k, initilize, test then do all over again at 128k

Has anyone with crossfire 6970m tried the Hotfix 11.5b?
It did install everything without problems, but you can´t use crossfire after update... There are still 2 cards shown in device manager, but the Catalyst Control Center doesn´t have an option to configure crossfire and benchmarks show that ony 1 card is working...
So I tested some and it seems to be the screen driver, not the new CCC. Everything works fine until I install new "8.85.6" driver... couldn´t find any information on this from other sources...

OK, I dont get this, the raid5 array finished initializing, so I decided to lket the comp rest a few hrs to settle, then I ran the SAMR benchmarks...

    Look th the numbers:

Its like I lost about 10MB/s on the benchmarks. The stripe is 64kb.

Anyone have any ideas why that would be ? I am thinking of trying a 128kb stripe.

    Intel Core i7 Processor Extreme-990X
IC Diamond Thermal Compound - CPU + GPU
    12GB Triple Channel DDR3 SDRAM at 1333MHz

10% decrease from which baseline? Didn't you just change out the drives? Was the original bench from the other set of Scorpies?

Wow! I missed that one. I never put the 7 in 7200 to 17" (and 8 in 8100 to 18").

Regardless, those may be too close. I like something in the 9K to 10K range. In any case, it's all B.S. right now, as it is really up to Clevo. In the end, I guess it will depend if there is enough difference b/w features of their existing systems.

Yes. There has also been a couple of other driver updates in the last couple of week or so. Easiest way to make sure you're up to date is to bookmark the driver sig and periodically check for updates.

If it's running at the low clock, it sounds like your crossfire is not turned on. Also make sure you have the newest Catalyst drivers as well when you enable it. If you still have issues after enabling crossfire (or can't enable it) then you may have a faulty card.

Never got my cpu no :( Lost by USPS's best service!! Didnt run the x7200 for weeeeeks cause I was so p'd off! And not having a cpu gives you no choice lol.

Now have a xeon W3680 oc'd to 4.2ghz with a vcore of only 1.2875, great! Still running one 480m, I really cant justify upgrading gpu, the 480m handles everything, make sure you put up loads of pics! :)

I would skip the raid or at least use two of the ssds in raid and make the third a standard spinner. That would greatly increase your onboard storage potential and lower costs. The benefits of the third drive in raid is negligible while increasing your opportunity to lose data if a drive goes down. Another option here would be to go raid 5 but then your left with 500 gigs onboard.

Hi guys my pics and benching will be delayed a little ran out of sand paper for the lapping of the GPU coolers since i calculated that i could use the ones i had but i got new ones with the cards with a dif GPU stamping in them so the old ones wont due since the stamping is placed in a dif place so it can interfere with the cooling i think dont kill me if im wrong havent done proper mezurements but just looking at them there is a small dif so getting new paper to morro and trust me they arent straight any where alot sanding to do

It is unlikely that the resellers would have them since the 470m is no longer being produced. I have had some people find them on ebay, but I don't know how much I trust that personally lol.

As far as performance is concerned, take a look at some of the benchmarks for the 560m over at notebook check. They put the 470m as outperforming it slightly, but they will be close.

I'm looking for a new laptop to replace my old NP5790. I do some light gaming but I'm really more interested in having a strong platform for VMware which I'll be using to create ESX testing environments.

Here are the basics of my initial build:

17.3" FHD 16:9 "Glare Type" Super Clear Ultra Bright LED Glossy Screen
    Intel® Core™ i7-970 (3.2-3.46GHz) 12MB L3 Cache, 4.8 GT/sec QPI, LGA 1366
IC Diamond Thermal Compound - CPU + GPU
    nVidia GeForce GTX 485M 2,048MB PCI-Express GDDR5 DX11- ~ 12,288MB DDR3 1333MHz Memory (3 SODIMMS)-
120GB Intel 510 Series Solid State Drive (SSD2 Serial-ATA III)
500GB (w/ 4GB SSD Memory) Seagate XT 7200RPM NCQ Hybrid
500GB (w/ 4GB SSD Memory) Seagate XT 7200RPM NCQ Hybrid
    Bigfoot Networks Killer™ Wireless-N 1102

I have a couple of questions.

    1. I was hoping to configure Raid 1 on the 500 GB drives. Is that possible on this machine if neither drive is the primary?
    2. If I'm not bothering to go for SLI is it worth investing in a laptop that's built for that?
    3. Is investing in the 990X Extreme worth it if I'm not overclocking?
    4. Is there anything else I need to consider?

    Thanks All,

    S.

Dont do raid on those drives....trust me, been there. I had a raid5 setup with those drives and nothing but weekly failures (the drives would fall out of raid). The drives werent bad but there not good for raid. Even Seagate has said as much. Also, I dont know where youre buying it from, but my reseler Xoticpc, has also said thats a bad idea, dont know about other resellers.

There is a whole lot of messages here on that subject, search for my posts, and I believe there is a whole different thread dedicated to that also. Save yourself massive headaches.....just dont. Get yourself some good WD Scorpio 500GB's and go with them....

That wireless network card is meh.......just go with the Intel Ultimate N 6300, you will be fine. And yes, I have the 990X and yea I love it. You can see my specs in my sig.

Rest of system looks great though. I did go SLI because I game also, but a single 485 will be fine if youre not into it a lot.

BTW, I use my system for work as well as games. I run 3-4 vms (vmware) at a time for work.

What you talkin' 'bout Willis! Still no problem with RAID 1 on my end. BTW, the Seagate forum is now rumbling about SD26. However, as you've documented RAID-5 is a definite no-no. Also, I've seen seem some RAID-0 folks have inconsistent results for RAID-0 on the XTs

s.flybuss, I think you'll be fine. You have a similar config as me (see sig). SSD system drive and RAID-1 data drive. No issues on this since day one. In regards to SSD, if you can shave a few bucks with a SATA II drive, you may want to take a look at that. It's really up to you. After flashing the [FW] on my Crucial C300, the drive has performed like a champ. If you want to know why I'm mentioning the drive it's because the x7200 won't gain too much with a SATA III drive as it will be limited to its SATA II controller.

here is the Heat zinc Like it comes before i remove any thing
    [IMG]
    By torment78 at 2011-06-17
the thermal pads are very fradgile so be careful when removed put them on a clean plastic film and dont remove the green plastic put so its facing up
the preaplied Paste you need razor blades for and alcohol to clean of dont scrape to hard so you scratches becouse they are hard to get out

    How i did it
Started with 240 grit and just do the movment like when you lap a CPU up and down in 40 reps den turn 80degree do 40 more untill almost flat then go with 320 grit just do the same but this time untill its compleatly flat then go for 400grit rotate after 40 then when you see there only markings from the 400 paper and its still flat keep on going to a higher grit count you be ok to stop at about 1000 or 1500 grit then you just get your polish paste and a cloth and start going at it when done clean with alcohol to make shore that no paste resedue or finger prints left on the heat zinc bada bing your done
AND THIS IS THE MOST IMPORTANT THING OF ALL

So, I was looking at the left side of this beast (same side as the HDMI out) and there is also a DVI out. So I am wondering, would it be possible to add a 2nd external monitor useing the DVI, that way have 2 external monitors, one useing HdMI and one useing DVI ?
