Thanks, everything has been going great so far. I really didn't even need to contact XoticPc once my order was put in (thanks to Brett for quickly answering my preliminary questions). Everything was smooth, and I got a case that I didn't anticipate getting. Honestly no real complaints so far. Just finished download Civ5 and in the middle of SC2, can't wait to see how they look.
-
Waiting Civ5 and SC2 on bargain bin sale....rofl
-
lol, I had already had them, but my old desky didn't run either at good settings.
-
That was it alright. I didn't realize what HotKey AP was for, and got a little overzealous trimming the startup processes. Oddly enough, the wireless control was the only Fn control key to go down. Fixed now though. Thanks!

anyone know a good sidebar gadget to monitor the gpu temp?
-
Does rainmeter have any? That would be sweet.
-

I personally have GPU Meter V1.1 running on all my machines. It's available from the same guy that makes All CPU meter that's featured with the the online gadget downloads. That's the only sidebar gadget I've seen though that gives all the needed info. -

Hey so I am about to order my Sager NP8130-S1. What I have upgraded are:
15.6" FHD 16:9 "Glare Type" Super Clear Ultra Bright LED Glossy Screen w/ 95% NTSC Color Gamut (1920x1080) (New Sager Option)
2nd Generation Intel® Core i7-2630QM, 2.0-2.8GHz, (32nm, 6MB L3 cache)
- -Stock OEM Thermal Compound
8,192MB DDR3 1600MHz Dual Channel Memory (2 SODIMMS) 8130 Special
- Standard Finish
750GB 7200RPM (Serial-ATA II 300 - 16MB Cache)
Intel® Ultimate-N 6300 - 802.11A/B/G/N Wireless LAN Module
I am unsure of two things. If I should get a Matte screen or Glossy. Also unsure about the 750 gig HD compared with the 500GB (w/ 4GB SSD Memory) Seagate XT 7200RPM NCQ Hybrid (Serial-ATA II 300 - 32MB Cache.
Any thoughts or ideas? thanks. -
Mr_Mysterious Like...duuuuuude
Matte or glossy, both are good options, especially on the 8130
And the HDD capacity depends on your needs. Do you want speed or size?
Mr. Mysterious -
Several I believe. I'd recommend Rainmeter over a Windows sidebar app, i've run into some buggy sidebar apps that brought my computer to a standstill and caused problems even after uninstalled. Only way to fix the issue was to disable the sidebar entirely, haven't used it since then.
-
I would like speed, but I hear people are not fans of the hybrid. Also if I would like to put a SSD in the computer in the future, how would I do this as it doesn't come with a second internal bay.
-
You can purchase an HDD caddy for the optical drive bay and put a 2nd hard drive in there. You can buy the caddy at any reseller, including us.
-
Mr_Mysterious Like...duuuuuude
Then go ahead and get the 750GB HDD.
You can put an SSD in your drive by removing the optical drive, buying a caddy, putting the HDD in the caddy and putting the SSD in your old HDD bay.

Don't get that configuration.
95% Gamut Upgraded Matte Screen
2630QM
8GM RAM
560M
750GB HDD
Also get the Advanced-N 6230. The Ultimate-N has no bluetooth, your system will have no bluetooth functionality.
Do you need the optical drive? External optical drives are cheap and portable now. I'd get large HDD inside a caddy in the optical bay and get a real SATA III 6gb/s SSD in the main HDD bay (Corsair C300, M400, OCZ Vertex 3, etc.). Don't bother with the hybrid drives.
You don't want the "glare" type screen. It's hilarious how they market that. Yes it causes glare! That's not a feature, that's a drawback. The S1 already has the upgraded matte LCD over the standard one and the package overall is cheaper. I personally hate glossy screens on laptops. I always buy glossy screens for my desktop monitors and all home theatre equipment is glossy now and that's great for the home environment where the display stays in one place and you can control the lighting. With a glossy screen laptop, depending on where you are, you can get irritating glare because there are so many different lighting environments you may be in. -

I use the GPU Observer gadget for monitoring and it works great.
-
I already ordered the laptop with the Glossy screen before you posted. At least it will have more vibrant colors and better viewing angles. And about the the Intel N6300, I can always purchase a USB bluetooth adapter for under $15. Thanks for the help though.
-
If you ever decide that you really wanted the Matte, you can go to Official Site of ViewGuard® Products including Privacy Filters & Screen Protectors for Laptop, Notebook & Desktop Computers; LCD Screens; Mobile Phones; PDAs and More and buy one of their screen protectors. I've been using one on my HP since the day I got it and have been very happy.
-
The glossy screens have better viewing angles? I've got the stock matte screen, and the viewing angles are really good.
-
So, has anyone found a notebook cooler that fits this laptop well? It seems all the ones I find are either too big or too small. Any suggestions?

Two of them: NZXT Cryo LX and the CoolerMaster SF-19.

From my review thread:

I use a passive one that costs me $5. Folds flat like a magazine, has ball bearing rotating base. Works great. This laptop does not need active cooling, just elevation so the intakes at the bottom of the laptop have room to breathe.

I put a thread on the main page so more people might see and can check if they have this reading under CPUID. I don't have it.

I have a Cryo LX, but was planning on selling it bundled with my current laptop once I receive my NP8130. Should I keep it?
-

I'd say keep it. It still works, right? Plus it's a sexy-looking cooler

Let us know your experiences with the glossy screen. I know on my last laptop, in my desk by an office window, I had really bad glare that made it very difficult to see the screen. A glossy screen will look amazing in the dark however. I still will never buy a glossy screen again because it is not worth the headache in a mobile device always seeing the reflection of something else or my own face and my brain having to filter it out.
As for the bluetooth issue, it just makes some of the functionality of the built in features in laptop nolonger useful because there is a bluetooth indicator LED and also a bluetooth on/off key. If you don't use bluetooth, then it doesn't really matter but the convenience of an internal system that is linked to hardware indicators and hardware keys built into the system already will always be better than a dongle.
If these issues bother you at all, I would contact your reseller and see if anything can be changed. -
Honestly, I'm not sure you will need one. Mines idles at about 35/36C, and doesn't get particularly hot under load. The cooling system for this laptop is really good.
-
Electric Shock Notebook Evangelist
The viewing angle is actually better on the stock matte screen, I believe it is AU Optronics B156HW01 than the glossy screen because there are less reflections. The XoticPC review on youtube comments that he prefers the matte screen to the glossy one as well. I don't know how it compares to the upgrades 95% gamut glare type screen. -
Just ran the 3dmark 11 on my machine. Scored a 2023 on it! My temps for CPU were 60-61 and my GPU was max was 71. Apparently that is higher than most scores for the stock card. According to Comparison of Laptop Graphics Cards - Notebookcheck.net Tech
mine scored higher than the max, probably because of the updated driver. Overall, pretty happy with how it runs. -
Any Sager owners with the GTX 560M care to post their bios and EC revision?
I'm curious what rev number Sager is using for their bios with 560M support and what EC they paired it with. -
I don't mind, just tell me what to do because I don't know where that info is.
-
Electric Shock Notebook Evangelist
Remember, the comparisons use completely different systems which will affect the score. You should only compare scores with those with the same hardware as you. The notebookcheck comparions are only for buyers to get a general idea where a system might sit in relation to others.
With the overclocked 460M I have 2256.
-
Wow, how much did you OC yours? Thats more than a 10% increase on mine.
-
Electric Shock Notebook Evangelist
Boot the computer and press F2 to go into the BIOS. All the versions will be listed for BIOS, GPU BIOS, and EC, etc. -
Electric Shock Notebook Evangelist
It's only 800/1600/1400. Your 560M should be able to overclock about 10% more. Use Nvidia Inspector for overclocking. As for other differences I have a 2720QM. -
Sorry I didn't post this quicker, had to help my parents with something:
Bios Revision: 1.01.011bL52
EC: 1.00.07SA1
vBios revision: 70.26.29.00.06
And Electric shock, is that nvidia inspector thing what you used to OC? Sorry, that's one other thing that has escaped me, overclocking. -
Thanks for the info, thats the numbers I was expecting to see and solves my speculation.
-
Electric Shock Notebook Evangelist
Yeah Nvidia Inspector makes overclocking easy. How are your fans by the way? How noisy are they? At what temperatures do they ramp up? The EC controls the fan so I'm interested in how it affect your system. -
I couldn't exactly tell you when they ramp up because I either don't notice them or don't pay attention. I don't have it in front of me right now, but I am pretty sure it is somewhere in the upper forties or lower fifties (CPU). I haven't done any gaming yet, except loading up Civ5 to see how drastic of a change it is over my old desky. So I don't really know when the fans go up for the GPU. One thing I can answer you though is haven't had that problem that everyone complains about where the fans go on, shut off, go on, shut off. Then again I have only had it a day so if I notice more I will definitely post back.
-
Here is a random question. If I wanted to make my laptop lighter, would removing the dvd player make it lighter? Would I need to put anything in its place to keep the laptop from breaking?
Thanks -
To me it seemed like a light little plastic drive that wouldn't make a significant difference. I might be wrong though, wait for someone that has actually taking it off to reply.
-
My fans have been really well behaved as well. I haven't had any of the ramping up/down described earlier in the thread. My temps are below 40C web browsing, with the fans are either off or on at a low speed. I don't notice them at all.
-
The optical drive with bezel weighs 7.1 oz. So a little less than 1/2 a LB.
Thats for a DVDRW drive. Do be aware that if you remove the optical the hole will make the laptop a little unbalanced as the HDD is where it is to balance that out. Just FYI. -
Electric Shock Notebook Evangelist
It's easy to take out. Give it a try. It's light as a feature and doesn't really add to the weight. The real weight is the metal support in the chassis and the heatsinks and the battery. Replacing the HDD with an SSD would be a little lighter as well but will have hardly any effect. -
Larry@LPC-Digital Company Representative
The standard screen for the Sager NP8130 is now the 95% NTSC Color Gamut in Glossy type (1920 x 1080). The 95% NTSC Color Gamut in MATTE (1920 x 1080) is a $95.00 upgrade for the Sager model...
_ -
The 15.6" 1920 x 1080 FHD LED Backlit 95% NTSC Color Gamut GlassView Display is now standard on the base configuration for the Clevo P151HM1 / 8130 from select resellers as well.
-
Electric Shock Notebook Evangelist
^ yep, bummed I was an earlier adopter and didn't get the 95% gamut matte screen 1600MHz ram, and 560M as well but that's what happens with technology within 1-2 months.
-
Just downloaded Nvidia inspector. Did you change your voltage? because mine is at a max 1V and I don't know if it can go more. Also, how were you able to change your first value? My GPU clock is stuck at 775, I can move my memory clock and shader though.
-
Electric Shock Notebook Evangelist
Interesting, that may account for the extra 10% of the 560M. The 460M maxes at 0.95V and I didn't touch it.
GPU clock and shader are linked. Move the shader and GPU clock moves as well.
